Random Thought: Why does all "90's Anime style" fanart just look like Sailor Moon?
Okay, obviously not all fanart looks like it. But if you were to type in "90s anime style" here on Tumblr or DeviantArt at the time of this post, it at least seems to be the majority stand-in for 90s anime aesthetic, right? Especially in the characters' eyes.
Don't me wrong, this is not a knock against Sailor Moon. It is a great anime, and the collective character designs by Kazuko Tadano, Ikuko Ito, and Mari Tominaga among other staff are iconic. So iconic that Tadano was brought back as the character designer for the latest Sailor Moon movies. That is quite the staying power.
But let's be fair, there are plenty of 90s anime out there that can also be used as inspiration. So, here are the names of 11 character designers alongside some gifs of shows/projects they worked on in that role. Some you may not know but you've seen their work, and others you probably know for their distinct art style or association with a franchise.
Things worth noting: First, the years listed here with some anime may reflect when the artists' work started airing, rather than when the anime itself actually started. Some folks listed here enter their projects mid-production in other roles, while others are in the role from the start. Second, each entry will list 1 or 2 projects aired/released during the 90s, but it will be noted if the artist's role continues beyond that with certain franchises. Lastly, these artists are listed in no particular order, so no "top 11" hierarchy. With that said, here's our examples:
Hisashi Eguchi (Roujin Z[1991], Sonic the Hedgehog CD [1993])
2. Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru(Dragon Ball franchise (Z [1993-96], GT [1996], Daima [2024]), Digimon franchise [1999-2002, 2019-2023])
3. Kumiko Takahashi (Cardcaptor Sakura [1998-2000], Birdy The Mighty[1996])
4. Takahiro Yoshimatsu (Trigun[1998], Slayers franchise[1995-97])
5. Atsuko Nakajima (Ranma 1/2[1989-1992], You're Under Arrest[1996])
6. Sayuri Ichiishi (Pokémon[Pokémon design: 1996-present, human character design: 1996-2017])
7. Atsuko Ishida (Magic Knight Rayearth[1994-1995])
8. Masaya Onishi (Yu Yu Hakusho[1993-1994])
9. Toshihiro Kawamoto(Cowboy Bebop[1998-1999], Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team[1996])
10. Hiroshi Osaka(Gundam franchise[Mobile Suit Victory Gundam: 1993-1994, Mobile Fighter G-Gundam:1994-1995])
11. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto(Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water[1990-1991], Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise[1995-1997, 2007-2021])
Might've leaned a bit more on the Shonen side of things than Shojo, but I hope you can see my point😅. There are tons of 90s anime out there with their own unique feel and aesthetic. These are only 11 names that I found.
For anyone drawing 90s anime style fanart, I hope this has given you some inspiration, and I encourage anyone reading this to look up your favourite anime on Anime News Network's encyclopedia and see who's responsible for helping bring your favorite characters to life on screen and what other shows they've worked on.

For what it's worth, even the Japanese fandom appears to be utterly sick of modern DB making Goku look bad in comparison to folks like Vegeta, be it in child-rearing and/or martial arts. Apparently, that recent Daima ep where Goku admits to Panzy that he didn't play much of a role in his kids' lives REALLY lit a fire in the belly of that side of the fandom.
As far as child-rearing goes, the trick of it is that the fandom gets too bogged down in trying to prove that their favorite character is a good dad.
They're convinced that one of these guys - Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta - is a Gold Star Did-Nothing-Wrong Father of the Year. And the arguments come down to bickering over which one it is, because fans don't like it when their fave isn't perfect.
But what it comes down to is that Goku's parenting kinda sucks. He leaves a lot to be desired. By his own admission, he didn't do much of the parenting, and that's not an inaccurate statement.
Like. We can go back and forth about whether Goku was right to stay dead, whether he was right to stay on Yardrat, whose fault it was that he had to go train at Kaio's, etc. etc. We can argue 'til we're blue in the face about how important it was that he be doing these things.
But it doesn't change the fact that what he wasn't doing for most of his children's lives was "being a present and active father, every single day of their lives." Whether you think his absences were justified or not, the facts of the matter are that Goku was not there for about half of Gohan's childhood and all of Goten's existence up until a short time before Daima began.
He was, often by choice, an absentee father.
And Vegeta is worse. Emotionally and physically abusive. Bitterly resentful of his family and outright accusing them of making him soft. By his own admission, he has never hugged Trunks and unlike Goku, he was physically present to do it. The one time he rectifies this, it's a trick to get Trunks to lower his guard so Vegeta can punch him out.
Goku is, without question, the better father.
But neither of them rise to the level of "good dad".
Piccolo, meanwhile, only actually parented Gohan for one year and we do not want to measure his character on that. Gohan's childish innocence taming the heart of the beast is probably the most iconic story of Dragon Ball. But if we're talking "good parenting", we're not gonna find it in Piccolo's beast period.
Mr. Satan is a womanizer who withdrew from his daughter and left her to fend for herself, so he's out.
The recent Super Hero movie established Gohan's family dynamic as him being a workaholic who neglects his daughter, so that's not great. Relatively tame, compared to some of the others on the list, but not great.
...I think Krillin's winning best dad right now, by default. Simply because being out of focus means we've never had a chance to learn anything bad about his parenting.

I feel so lucky to have grown up with Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball fans who didn't grow up with it are just as much fans as those who did, you'll NEVER hear me say otherwise. But growing up with Dragon Ball is such a special and beautiful experience as a fan.
Like, I can't even describe how watching Dragon Ball Daima makes me feel. I grew up with Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT. As much as I find it shitty, Dragon Ball Super was a huge part of my teenage years. And now, when I am an adult, a new series comes out ? The FEELINGS. The memories, the nostalgia. That dumb smile never leaves me whenever I watch an episode. I even several times found myself having tears in my eyes, especially during the opening. My heroes are back, can you imagine ?
I can literally cry hearing a Dragon Ball opening. Play Chala Head Chala, Makafushigi Adventure or Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku and I am able to literally tear up.
The feelings I get sometimes when I rewatch/reread Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z/Dragon Ball GT are so powerful. Like, I see a gif of little Gokū with Bulma, of Little Gohan with his dad, I rewatch/reread an iconic scene or hear an iconic line and shjdjdjd. My HEART.
Dragon Ball brings me sooooo much joy, I love, love this manga/anime, and I love that I grew up with it. I love the fact that it is associated with so many memories, I love the fact that I can associate a Dragon Ball series/arc with literally every part of my life, I love the nostalgia and indescribable feelings that Dragon Ball can give me. I literally thank my parents who made me watch Dragon Ball when I was like... five.

Dragon Ball Super had some really cool moments so far. Super Saiyan God in the God of Destruction movie, The tournament of Power, Ultra Instinct and Blue Gogeta in the Broly movie. Overall, in my opinion it's not the same as OG Dragon Ball or DBZ. Power scaling just doesn't seem to make sense or matter anymore. Like Krillin went toe to toe with Blue Goku in a kamehameha clash. Goku, one of the strongest warriors in his universe to Krillin (one of the strongest human's on earth). This shouldn't have even animated that because it makes no sense at all.
Regardless, I love Dragon Ball and what it has done for the anime community. Akira Toriyama has inspired so many people to create amazing mangas/animes and also inspired people in general. Dragon Ball is iconic and will always be one of my favorite series regardless of what I think of super or their new projects like Dragon Ball Daima.
Anyways, what do you guys think of DBS? Do you like what they have done with the franchise, or do you prefer what they did in DB and DBZ?

Something say for The DragonBall Franchise that has Been on My Mind for a While is how Fa ns talk so Much on DragonBallZ, How Fantastic/Innovating from How Action Packed it is with Fight Scenes that are Spectical to the Eyes.
But Yet Not Many Would Take Mention on How It’s Early Roots Were Like; and Would tend to Forget How it all Actually Started.
This Start of Year I Got the Chance to Look At The Original Dragon Ball(the Anime from 1984) and I Must Say I Might Actually Like this Version that it’s Sequels. It’s Simple Story of a Boy Going Off on an Journey to find DragonBalls to Learning the Way of Becoming a Martial arts Fighter, the Soft and Fun Design of the Characters with a Unique Detail for the Mechanics, the Fun and Colorful Cast of Characters a few that been Forgotten in the Franchise(LUNCH) and Overall Silly and Fun Adventures it Brought to the Table.
It Saddens me how it’s Ignored from it Predecessor, I Understand and Get How DBZ Became something more Outstanding for New Viewers plus it’s intensity and Thrill Store lines Giving Us the Iconic Sayains and Their Power Ups. But Something About the Original Before the Sayains give a Whole New Vibe that Brings something Special in it own Unique Way. Honestly Miss this Kind of DB History as Many have as I said Forgot this Version making Old School Characters Become Irrelevant unless they are Connected to Sayains; and Again these Guys had Greater Impact when the Series just Started Out. Granted there have been Attempts of Emulating the Original in the Franchise, DB DAIMA Being an Example but Still aside from Bulma the Others Get Left Behind while the Big Names Go Off on the Journey; not saying that it’s Bad and I Plan to Check it Out as it Toriyama Final Work on the Series but My Points Still Stands.
At the End of the Day Something I Like Fans Checking Out and See What it Like in its Early Roots, What Characters Like Krillen Yamcha Tien and Roshi Ment for the Series and it Simple Action that gives Nod to Marital Art Movies and Actors of the Time. Seriously if ur a DB Fan that Hasn’t Yet Seen This Version I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT

Death battle: sonic vs goku. Composite edition
Connection: two spiky hair protagonist who love to something (for goku it fighting and for sonic it adventure), both have iconic yellow super forms with upgraded versions (super saiyan blue and hyper sonic), a rival that they’re polar opposite to each other (shadow and Vegeta) and both are known for using 7 mythical items (chaos emeralds and dragon balls).
Btw composite in powerscaling means combining every official version of a character into one, so basically their feats, items and forms are all taken into account.
Sonic is getting combined with movie verse, boom, satAM, taosth, underground, sonic x, sonic ova, shogaku ninesei, fleetway and both Archie continuity’s. Plus his many powers up and one off forms
Goku is getting combined with the anime, gt, Daima, super (plus the manga), dragon ball SD, heroes, animation films, the games, ova’s and dragon ball evolution. Plus his many crossover appearances

MY THOUGHTS ON DRAGON BALL DAIMA

(Wasn't going to post this old draft, but decided to post it anyway since @/puyohero was curious about my thoughts)
Awesome! Love that Toriyama is heavily involved! Love the art & animation and the idea is interesting too.
SIMILARITY TO DRAGON BALL GT
Yes, GT did something similar. However GT sidelined most of the cast. Even Pan & Trunks kinda got sidelined when they were part of the main cast of GT. In this, it seems the other characters will play some sort of role too. Or I assume so. And they will be traveling to another realm/world. So maybe the others will go with Goku.
DB DAIMA seems to be referencing a lot of DB properties & not only GT. As pointed out here...
CAST AS CHILDREN COULD MEAN...
I had hoped it would turn the entire cast into children and glad it happened. Now I hope we get more info about it. Because what I want is for the other cast members to get involved. Gohan & Piccolo are on a similar level to Goku & Vegeta, so then being excluded to only focus on Goku & Vegeta would be stupid. And since it is stated that this series won't be transformation heavy... what if Goku cannot transform into forms he didn't have as a child?? Or it's very taxing on the body if they can. Now everyone can get involved in the battles! Krillin has already returned to martial arts, but we can get my boy Yamcha fighting again! We might even get to see kid Ox King fight alongside kid Roshi. That would be neat!
Now what would be funny is to see a kid version of Buu. Would it be a short chubby Buu or Kid Buu/Pure Buu? Or maybe the magic won't affect him much since he can change his appearance at will. 🤔
Also, I bet there is a joke about Krillin not getting much smaller when turned into a kid again like how there was a joke in OG Dragon Ball that Krillin didn't get much taller & Krillin is upset about the statement.

Also, the chibi reminds me of the Dragon Ball SD manga.
TITLE POSSIBLY ELUDING TO...

Another interesting thing was the placeholder name "Magic" and the current name "DAIMA." Seems like Toriyama is possibly hinting at the Makaioshin. Evil beings with magical power, the Demon Realm being a place where magic rules over science, and the fact that THIS guy looks like a Kaioshin.
So the little guy could be a God of the Demon Realm. Or maybe a God of Destruction of the Demon Realm. Who knows? We'll have to wait and see.
JOURNEY TO THE WEST REFERENCES
I see some Journey To The West/Saiyuki influence in here too which is good cause this is Dragon Ball after all. Goku with a Sun Wukong role, East Kaioshin (Shin) with the monk role. And maybe other characters who are inspired by Saiyuki will play roles similar to their inspirations.
Vegeta having a Sun Wukong role while Bulma has the Tripitaka role
Piccolo having a Tripitaka/Wukong role while Gohan also has the Tripitaka/Wukong role
Krillin with a Tripitaka role (maybe some Wukong role too since he also takes some Wukong inspiration) & maybe 18 takes on the role of Tripitaka in certain aspects?
Yamcha with a role referencing Sha Wujing role
Tenshinhan with a role referencing Erlang Shen
And if the Demon Realm is involved then there is more Saiyuki references. Journey to a dangerous land and fighting demons. This could be pretty cool to see.
GOKU'S DESIGN
And another thing... Goku's gi in Daima. It's becoming closer and closer to his End of Z gi.

The untucked style of Goku's gi in Daima is similar to EoZ, but the colors are still like his iconic orange and blue gi.
MY THEORY FOR THE STORY
In the Demon Realm, the Makaioshin & some Demon God examine Goku & his friends. They speak about Babidi and how he recruited the King of the Demon Realm, Dabura, and still failed. As well as Bibidi summoning & Babidi reawakening the evil beings Majin Buu, then Buu becoming an ally of Goku. Where a sorcerer failed, a Demon God plans to succeed. The Demon God & Makaioshin notice that Goku & company are always victorious due to their strength, transformations, and friendship that encourages each other. So somehow, they are all turned into children to make them doubt their chances of victory. And their power is nerfed too. The Saiyans might have to struggle just to turn SSJ again. I believe it will be through a spell just to be different from GT and not use a wish granting Dragon. The part that shows that a wish was made to Shenron wish was likely after they were turned into kids and they needed help in some way, or they tried to reverse the spell and it was beyond the power of Shenron.
So they venture into this new realm to fix things. Perhaps splitting into groups. Goku & Kaioshin, Vegeta & Bulma, Gohan & Piccolo, Krillin & 18, ect. Some teaming up with other groups too. Get to see stuff like Goku & Tien team up. They learn about the depths of magic & Bulma is surprised because her technology she relies so much upon doesn't matter much in the Demon Realm where magic is their technology.
At some point, they find a way to return to their actual ages and adult bodies. In the end, they confront the Demon God & Makaioshin. Of course Goku would face the main bad guy (along with Vegeta & maybe with Gohan & Piccolo). Godly power vs godly magic. Or something like that.
Now let's wait & see how wrong I am 😂

Get Ready for Dragon Ball Daima: Goku’s Next Big Adventure
Dragon Ball fans recently received huge news at the New York Comic Con, as Toei Animation announced the new anime Dragon Ball Daima. This upcoming anime commemorates the 40th anniversary of the beloved franchise while promising a fresh chapter to the story. Here are some pieces of information that you may want to know about Goku’s upcoming adventure.
Toriyama’s Involvement
Dragon Ball’s author, Akira Toriyama, has mentioned that he is more involved than usual in this anime. Unlike the case of Dragon Ball GT, Toriyama is the one who came up with the story. On top of this, he is also responsible for many of the designs in the anime. Toriyama taking such an important role in Daima increases the possibility that this new entry will be canon.
Plot and Timeline Placement
Set to be officially released in Fall 2024, Dragon Ball Daima introduces a particular plot twist since Goku and his friends have been turned into children. The trailer has given rise to discussions regarding where this story fits within the Dragon Ball timeline. Certain moments from the trailer confirm that Daima will take place after the final battle between Goku and Majin Buu in Dragon Ball Z. However, it remains unclear where it fits in relation to Super.
Anticipation and Nostalgia Trip
While the release of Dragon Ball Daima is still one year away, the anime is already carrying a lot of anticipation and excitement. It is no mystery that many Dragon Ball fans grew up with the anime and the development of the franchise. Toriyama’s deep involvement in the creative process and the context of the story with Goku going back to using his Nyoibo, are sure to give a nostalgic feeling to long-term fans of the franchise.
Exclusive Goku Funko POP! Now on Cooledtured!
As the countdown for the release of Daima begins, fans can extend their passion to exclusive collector’s items. As a nod to the upcoming release, enthusiasts can dive into the world of Funko POP! with Dragon Ball Z Goku. This meticulously crafted figure, capturing the essence of the iconic character in his Super Saiyan God form, is available for purchase on cooledtured, an online haven for collector’s items.
