I wanted to ask about fantasy again. You've made it pretty clear what you think of "dwarves" as a fantasy race. I wanted to ask your opinion on things like gnomes and halflings/hobbits? They seem different enough that people don't seem to necessarily think of them as the same thing, but they're based on the same sort of premise as fantasy "dwarves." Would you like to see gnomes and halflings phased out of fantasy stories alongside "dwarves," or do you think those character concepts don't harm real life little people the same way "dwarves" do?

I'd like to know the answer to the same question about even smaller fantasy species like pixies. Do you think it depends on how the narration handles it and if so, what would you like to see more or less of?

It's less that I "see them" as a seperate race, but that media like Dungeons and Dragsons, Lord of the Rings, Runescape, etc. have made a clear distinction between the race of humans and "dwarves" - each with their own seperate regions and cultures. The distinction is based on Germanic and Norse folkflore, and is generally dehumanizing to folks with real dwarfism - I've spoken about it a lot on this blog, you can find more of my thoughts on the "fantasy dwarves" tag!

Beings like gnomes and hobbits may not have as a direct impact on the LP (little people, folks with dwarfism) community, but they use the same framework - which is that size can be enough to mystify a race of beings. I am not saying that as a LP I am completely against gnomes, hobbits, etc. but I AM saying that as consumers of fantasy we Need to look into how the depictions within it change our outlook or even our assumptions towards real people with similar attributes. No media is without criticism and analysis, and no depicitions live in a vaccum.

St. Patrick's Day is this month and I'm avoiding downtown like the plague because people treat my terribly because of leprechauns. I am a real person with a real disability, but the media that people consume has activelly influence real harm towards me.

Hi again! Same anon as the last little prompt (which was delightful and brightened my day immensely <3). If it’s not too much trouble, I’d love to hear more about service dragons in urban fantasy. What tasks do they typically learn? Are there bigger dragons that do mobility or guide work? Are there training programs / foundations that place them with handlers? Do they have vests with flame-proof patches and holes for their lil wings? I’m so delighted by this concept. :D

The service dragons are a kind of spin off from my pocket dragon idea!

In my mind the Domestic Dragon Trust rescues, breeds, raises, trains and places these little dragons. The ones that show promise to be service animals get extra training. I imagine they’re quite good at comforting people, keeping an eye on proper meal times and getting people to take some exercise.

It’s funny you mention larger dragons. For some reason I cannot imagine large dragons as very animal in nature. I think once you have a creature living with you that is capable of speech and complex thought you no longer have a pet, you have a life partner :P

But I love the idea of little pocket dragons just hanging out, riding on your shoulder, stealing your keys and occasionally sneezing sparks to set someone’s homework on fire 💜

(Of course, if it were up to me, we’d have all kinds of mythological creatures shrunk down and riding on our shoulders)

Edit: Okay, I’m gonna level with you. I do not quite understand animals wearing clothes, I’m sure it’s a failing on my part. But anyone who manages to get a little fireproof vest with wing holes onto a tiny, sharp-clawed, sharp-toothed, fire-tongued dragon will have both my respect and my fear
