Practice 1: Development Project 2
Post #7
I decided to keep going forward with the scene I had and started texturing the different parts.
Overall, I struggled here quite a bit as well since I had strayed away from my initial concept a lot due to the shortage of time I was now under.
I decided to play around with pre-existing textures in Substance Painter and created somewhat good looking textures.
After this I took the pieces into Unreal Engine and started putting the scene together.
I came across another struggle here. Somehow, the textures looked very different from what they looked like in Substance Painter. It was mostly the colour, everything seemed to be looking a lot lighter in shade, which maded lighting extremely difficult as well. I had to hold bacck a bit on how I lit the scene.
Another issue I came across quite a lot was Unreal Engine constantly crashing. I figured this was most likely dude to the scene not being optimised well enough. I had fairly mid-poly models and some of the textures were very high res.
I still decided to go forward with it and lit the scene as well as I could.
This is what the render looked like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the end, I was not quite happy with how my scene looked. Even though I tired my best to save it through the lighting, a lot of things which were wrong with my scene from before held me back here.
But I was still extremely happy with my research and concept development, and if possible I would like to work with the same concept again and make an environment which is closer to what I had initially imagined.

worried Dean @ Cas: ā€œI’m not bothering you, am I?ā€
---
It’s a widely accepted tenet in the art department that Castiel Novak is a genius.
Dean first hears rumors of Novak’s skills when he’s a freshman. He doesn’t believe them at first. He suspects they’re overblown by groupies who are too interested in trying to get into Novak’s pants (not that Dean can blame them: with his shock of dark hair, ice-blue eyes, and delicate scrollwork of tattoos spiraling up his arms to disappear under the sleeves of his very tight t-shirts, Novak is a walking wet dream). Then, at the end of his freshman year, he’s busy setting up the annual art show when a piece catches his attention.Ā
At first glance, the painting is deceptively simple. A shadowed figure stands in the center of the canvas, his arms raised up to the sky. Around him are swirls of red, black, and gold, somehow blending into one color in the background. The more Dean looks, the more ambiguity he finds in the painting. Are the swirls of gold lifting the figure up or restraining him? Is the figure fading into the black or breaking free? Is the red coming from him or is he drawing it in? Are his hands raised in supplication or defiance?Ā
Dean loses track of how many minutes he spends staring at the painting, admiring the shading, the color, the symbolism. Transfixed, he reaches out to touch at the rough surface of the painting before he recalls himself and snaps his hand back to his side.Ā
ā€œYou can touch it if you want.ā€Ā
Dean whirls around at the deep voice, his eyes widening when he sees Castiel Novak standing behind him, hands tucked deep into his pockets. Castiel raises a pierced eyebrow at him.Ā
ā€œSeriously. Go ahead.ā€Ā
Dean shakes his head, aware of Castiel’s reputation.Ā ā€œI can’t...we’re not allowed to disturb the artwork--ā€
Castiel’s mouth twists and Dean doesn’t know whether he’s angry or deprecatory.Ā ā€œWell, I’m the artist, and I say you can.ā€Ā
Castiel’s eyes rest heavily on him. Dean swallows, his heart picking up a rhythm that seems attached to the flick of Castiel’s tongue over his lower lip. Hand shaking, he reaches out to brush his fingers over the textured canvas.Ā
ā€œIt’s rough,ā€ Castiel says from right behind him (when the hell did he get that close?),Ā ā€œbecause becoming is always rough.ā€Ā
And that’s how Dean Winchester decided Castiel Novak was a genius.Ā
---
As school and life continues, Dean admires Castiel Novak from afar.Ā
From what he can tell, Castiel doesn’t have many friends. He has admirers, which he ignores, and he has a few people who hang onto his fame, which he disdains, but actual friends? The only thing keeping Dean from volunteering is the thought that Castiel will turn the same withering look on him.Ā
Castiel haunts the art building and, as Dean continues delving into the Art program at Carver Edlund University, he does the same. Sometimes he’ll pass Castiel on his way to his studio. Castiel always nods at him, but it’s a companionable gesture, the same that you might give to someone at the grocery store. He never stops to chat, doesn’t even remove his earbuds.Ā
And that’s fine. So Dean’s harboring a crush that’s as much intellectual as it is physical. Plenty of people have crushes. It’s fine. It’s not like he’s obsessed. Not like he lurks around just so he can leave at the same time Castiel does. Not like he skulks through the dark halls so he can get a look at Castiel’s new project. That would make him creepy and pathetic, and those are two adjectives which certainly don’t describe Dean Winchester.Ā
After a while, denial doesn’t even taste bad, just a little bitter.Ā
By the end of his sophomore year, Dean’s accustomed to the status quo. He notices the light in the private studio allotted to Castiel (all senior Art majors get their own studios, but Castiel got the nicest of them), but he doesn’t stop on his way to his own (shared) studio. When he arrives, however, he screeches to a halt.Ā
His studio is filled to the brim with snotty freshmen. His personal workplace has been completely commandeered by a freshman with a (barf) man bun.Ā ā€œWhat the hell?ā€ Dean sputters. He can feel his face turning red with rage.Ā ā€œThis is my time.ā€Ā
Man-Bun pops his gum as he looks at Dean. His eyes are so hazy Dean’s surprised that he’s not deep-throating a bong at that very moment.Ā ā€œUm, guess again? We totally booked the studio for tonight?ā€Ā
Seething, Dean storms to the schedule and checks. Sure enough, there’s a long list of names on the door for the studio space.Ā ā€œI always have Thursday,ā€ he protests, but it’s an empty sort of rage.Ā ā€œI’m always here for Thursdays.ā€Ā
Man-Bun shrugs, turning back to his psychedelic smattering of colors.Ā ā€œNot this Thursday, dude.ā€Ā
Dismissed, Dean gathers his remaining dignity, and leaves. Standing out in the hallway, he reviews his options. He’s kicked out of his regular studio, and he needs to work tonight, otherwise he’ll never get his final project for figure drawing done. Every studio he passes is booked to capacity; clearly the art program is full of procrastinators. In fact, the only studio that has any sort of room...
ā€œNo. No. Shit.ā€ Dean weighs the consequences of failing his class versus metaphorically throwing himself into a volcano. Finally, his fear of failure takes over, and he knocks on the door of his last remaining option.Ā
The door swings open, revealing a Castiel who looks significantly more disheveled than normal (though normal Castiel usually looks like he was rode hard and put away wet). A smear of blue paint decorates one cheek while his earbuds dangle from his neck. Dean tries to ignore the spirals of Castiel’s tattoos, especially where they disappear under his shirt (he especially tries to ignore the thoughts of what those tattoos look like underneath Castiel’s shirt). Castiel blinks in surprise.Ā
ā€œDean. What are you doing here?ā€Ā
(The fact that Castiel knows Dean’s name comes as a shock. Dean assumed that he was one of the thousands of nameless faces Castiel passes every day.)
ā€œUm, first let me say, it’s totally awesome if you say no, I don’t expect you to say yes, it’s a huge imposition--ā€
ā€œDean, you’re rambling.ā€Ā
ā€œCan i use your studio? Or share it? I wouldn’t ask, but a bunch of douchebags took mine and there are no other spaces open, and I really need to finish this project--ā€
ā€œSure. Come on.ā€Ā
And with that, Castiel steps back and beckons Dean into his studio.Ā
Dean crosses the threshold with something resembling awe. He never imagined, in his wildest dreams, that he would be allowed into Castiel’s inner sanctum. He tries not to gape too obviously as his eyes dart from corner to corner of the room. It looks...like a studio for the most part. Several canvases are hung around the room; if they’re discarded attempts or inspiration, Dean doesn’t know. They could easily function as either. Castiel finally steps in front of him, directing Dean’s attention to one corner of the room.Ā
ā€œWould there be good?ā€Ā
Dean nods.Ā ā€œYeah, that’s good.ā€ He pauses, eyes darting nervously around the studio.Ā ā€œI’m not bothering you, am I?ā€
Castiel frowns, like the thought hadn’t even occurred to him.Ā ā€œNo, of course not. If you were, I wouldn’t have opened up the door.ā€ With that, he seems to consider the topic of conversation closed, and retreats back a few steps.Ā
He sets up his work and tries to ignore the fact that Castiel Novak is watching him. It’s almost impossible not to feel his eyes; the skin on the back of Dean’s neck prickles in awareness, but he perseveres.Ā
He sets his sketch on the easel before casting a critical eye upon it. He frowns as he notices every imperfection. it’s based off a series of sketches he jotted down in class earlier that day. Dean remembers the careless grace of the model, the way that the fabric had draped artlessly over his waist and shoulders, but he can’t recapture the specific atmosphere of the room, which was what made that particular model striking. Every time he tries to put onto the paper how the room felt, his figures end up wooden and two-dimensional.Ā
ā€œYou’re paying too much attention to the form.ā€Ā
Dean jumps, his charcoal pencil scrawling an ungainly line across the page. Not a huge loss, he was already going to toss this one anyway. He turns around to find Castiel standing directly behind him.Ā
Castiel nods towards his sketchpad.Ā ā€œIn your drawings. You’re paying too much attention to the form. That’s why it’s coming out wrong.ā€Ā
ā€œThe form is all there is,ā€ Dean replies, a little peevishly. He knows the sketch sucks, but that doesn’t mean he wants Castiel freaking Novak pointing it out to him.Ā
ā€œThe form is one part. But you have the lighting and shading and you have the intention. The intention is...the feel of the room. It’s what remains unsaid and unseen to those who weren’t there. It’s what you’re trying to capture by paying so much attention to the form. Of course, by concentrating too much on the technical, you lose the abstract.ā€Ā
Castiel flicks over to a new page with a deft flick of his wrist. He plucks the pencil from Dean’s grasp with one hand. With the other, he poses Dean’s hand close to his face. Castiel stares at Dean for a few excruciating seconds before he turns his attention to the empty page.Ā
Dean hardly dares to breathe as Castiel sketches. He’s not sure how he’s going to return to real life, knowing now the tiny crease that knits between Castiel’s brows or how the tip of Castiel’s tongue pokes out of the corner of his mouth. How is he supposed to live, knowing Castiel hums tunelessly as his hand works?Ā
ā€œThere.ā€ Castiel flips the sketch to face Dean. In it, Dean finds his own face, rendered in a few lines. It’s rough, certainly, but it’s a close enough likeness. More than that, Castiel’s managed to capture...
ā€œDo I look that scared?ā€ Dean blurts out, before he can stop himself.Ā
Castiel actually laughs, deep and rumbling, from the diaphragm. It’s a lovely sound, one that fills the studio, and one Dean would gladly hear again and again.Ā ā€œYou don’t look scared.ā€ He sets the pencil down on the easel and turns fully to face Dean.Ā ā€œAnxious maybe. Hovering on the edge of anticipation.ā€ He steps closer. His chest almost brushes Dean’s, which could be misinterpreted as Castiel not understanding the concept of personal space.Ā
What can’t be misinterpreted is the unsubtle drop of Castiel’s eyes to Dean’s lips.Ā
ā€œI guess now would be a good time to tell you that I’ve really wanted to kiss you for almost a year,ā€ Castiel says, his voice scraped rough around the edges. His eyes drag up to Dean’s, and Dean’s taken aback at the wild glint in them. Castiel steps closer and his clever fingers slip into the spaces between Dean’s fingers.Ā ā€œPlease Dean,ā€ Castiel breathes, raw and needy,Ā ā€œplease, can I kiss you?ā€Ā
ā€œFuck yes,ā€ Dean murmurs, which is all he gets to say before Castiel’s hand cups the back of his head and his lips descend upon Dean’s.Ā
Not that Dean’s bragging, but he’s had quite a few good kisses in his life (and been told that he gives quite a few good kisses). Castiel blows them all out of the water. Dean’s never been kissed so thoroughly before, like Castiel wants to own him, like Castiel’s interested in finding exactly what makes Dean tick. His teeth nip at the swell of Dean’s lower lip while his tongue delicately traces the seam of Dean’s lips. Dean eagerly opens his mouth, moaning into Castiel’s mouth as Castiel’s tongue slips in along his.Ā
Hours or days later, when they part, Dean realizes that while one of his hands is cupping the spur of Castiel’s hip (holy fuck, those hips feel like handles for his hands), his other hand is still holding Castiel’s. It’s certainly the sweetest kiss that’s ever given him a boner.Ā
Castiel laughs, a little breathless. It’s only then Dean realizes he’s a little taller than Castiel.Ā ā€œYou do live up to expectations,ā€ he murmurs, and Dean’s not sure whether Castiel’s talking to himself or not.Ā
The words spark a recent memory in Dean, and suddenly nothing is more important than finding out the truth. ā€œYou said you wanted to do that for a year?ā€ Castiel nods, his eyes suddenly shifting to the side.Ā ā€œWhy?ā€Ā
ā€œEveryone always goes on about my art. How groundbreaking it is, how I’m aĀ ā€˜once in a generation talent’.ā€ Castiel uses finger-quotes, which should not be as endearing as Dean finds it.Ā ā€œAnd it’s nice, but none of them even bother to see my art for what it is. They just see my name attached to it and they lose their shit. But last year...You saw that painting. It didn’t matter to you who made it. You saw it and appreciated it for what it was. And I...I saw you.ā€Ā
Castiel swallows. For all his suave confidence earlier, he looks oddly vulnerable now.Ā ā€œSo, anyway. Yeah. For a year now. Um...ā€ He glances at Dean’s easel.Ā ā€œI guess I’ll leave you alone now. Or if you want privacy, I can go.ā€Ā
ā€œOr,ā€ Dean says, the pink flush on Castiel’s cheeks giving him all the bravery he’ll ever need.Ā ā€œYou could stay.ā€ Castiel’s eyes slice to him, their blue intense and jaw-dropping. Dean grins, a little predatory, like they’re on even ground.Ā
ā€œAfter all, I’m going to need a model for this sketch.ā€Ā

crocodile emoji rated
i wanted to do one of these posts too because i always think they’re fun.
Tumblr media
surprisingly detailed, but pulls it off. weird texture and could use some spines, but overall a good weight to this boy. a fat, healthy croc who still has some personality with a nice smile. 9.5/10Ā
Tumblr media
silly cartoony lad. not the cleanest emoji out there, but it doesn’t do anything actively wrong either. 8/10
Tumblr media
people give microsoft a lot of shit for their outlines, but i’ve always found them endearing. this one is undeniably a little strange, but i appreciate the creativity of the pose in translating a croc to this style. 5/10
Tumblr media
discount version of the apple one. the perspective on this one is a little borked and crocs are Not rubbery smooth and shiny like that. inexplicable plating on the nose too. 7.5/10 because he is still very charming and i like his smile; this is a harmless lad who wishes you a good day.
Tumblr media
2/10. this is a gecko, but i can’t give it a negative rating because geckos are still great even if the coloring here is pretty fugly.
Tumblr media
by far the worst of them structurally, but he has a unique personality that i cannot put to shame. collected, confident lad, takes great pride in the fact of being a crocodile [as one should]. ready to listen to your problems and offer sound encouragement. 6/10
Tumblr media
this one is hilariously realistic; not much personality here but it IS a very good rendering of a crocodile. 10\10 for dedication and very lovely pronounced spines on the tail
Tumblr media
i greatly appreciate the pronounced lower jaw shape here, but the rest is... kind of mess. bad gradients, lateral lines give it a weird texture and fade+transition to spines poorly, the whole Junction of the head/forelimb area is fucked. 1.5/10
Tumblr media
0\10 there is nothing interesting or distinctive about this whatsoever.
Tumblr media
jesus christ. this is the google one if it had all its weak points multiplied x5 and was also malevolent. stiff, bad colors, really careless linework/detailing.Ā  -3/10
Tumblr media
looks like an amphibian that should be extinct. why is he so flat? samsung may have looked rubbery, but this dude looks PLASTIC. soulless face, poorly-executed back spines, and just generally unpleasant to look at, 0.5\10
Tumblr media
EUGH. indistinct, ugly, and just generally unwell-looking. i don’t know what this babysmooth animal is, but it is not a croc, and it is not in good health. -10/10
Tumblr media
another zero by all rights, but i’ll bump it up to a 1/10 for looking like a hieroglyph really particularly nasty shade of green here though.
Tumblr media
low-budget 3d animated children’s show version of a croc. an interesting take, but ultimately not a very good one. 1.5/10 looks like a Generic Lizard

Dude, That’s Gross! Bone, Blood, Burn, Bruises
These four pieces are explorations of texture and materials. I wanted to explore some seemingly ā€œgrossā€ aspects of people/bodies, and see if I could artfully render an accurate depiction of the different textures onto a canvas. For the ā€œBoneā€ canvas, I used crackle paste and gel sand texture mixed into acrylic paint, which I layered on the canvas and then used a sponge to achieve the texture. For the ā€œBloodā€ canvas, I used gel medium to build up the texture, then I mixed a lot of gloss medium into different shades of red and covered the canvas, letting the canvas dry upright to achieve the drips I wanted. For the ā€œBurnā€ canvas, I first started by mixing crackle paste into some dark brown acrylic paint and layered that in a couple of areas. Once that was dry, I put a lot of gel medium into a ziploc bag and cut one of the corners, and used it like an icing piping bag to draw the different raised lines. After that was dry, I used different colours of acrylic paint to finish it off. Finally, For the ā€œBruisesā€ canvas, I only used acrylic paint, as I wanted to keep the canvas as flat as possible. I used a mixture of paintbrushes, sponges, and my fingers to get the different tones blended on the canvas.

So @webzebs, I know some others have given you their help, but I figured I'd offer mine up as wellā˜ŗļø~
Tumblr media
Before I do anything, I make little different sketches on a sticky note, trying to find a version/pose that I like them in (this isn't the best example, but it might help explainšŸ˜…??) A lot of the poses will look like shit first off, but that's why you draw little sketches of multiple poses and see which one you'd like to work with/ is what you're trying to portray. I also use the stick figure method (that's why Sun looks so stiff🤣🤣) but if you look at Moon, I have lines outlining the position I want him in. They're a bit hard to spot, (sorry about that) but it's how I decided I wanted him slightly bent over, as if in pain, while Sun is standing up straight, not feeling anything (except arrogant maybe . . )
Then I take a picture of the sketch, move the transparency setting to 70% (you can still see the sketch, but it it makes it easier to see your digital lines as well) Then I start doing the outline.
Tumblr media
Then I delete the sketch and I'm left with what I can only describe as a detailed coloring page🤣 During this time, you can correct anything you don't like, add or erase, etc. Then I add in the colors first, then after I'm satisfied with the colors I've used, then I get into the shading. (I should mention, this, I color them in on a separate layer, than collapse the outline onto the colored layer. Gives the piece a cleaner look in my opinionšŸ™ƒ)
Tumblr media
This is the flat version without shading. So unlike others, I don't render my artwork. I've tried to in the past, but it just didn't look right.
When it comes to shading the cute scrunklies, I highlight the area I want to shade, outline it with an airbrush in a darker tone than the original color (not black, just a slightly darker color) and then extend the brushes settings to the limit, select a color slightly lighter than the original, then go over the selected area in one swipe. It sounds stupid, but it leaves a really clean and soft shading texture🄰 (you can see this effect on Moon's Scarf, giving it a softer look)
Tumblr media
For the overall scene shading, I still wanted the flames to be the main beacon of light besides their eyes. Shading the night is difficult, but I usually just use the same airbrush I used for shading, create a separate layer, then extending it to it's limit again, select a dark grey (not completely black, but the closest you can get to it) and go over the whole piece. If you're lucky, one swipe should be enough, but if you want a darker night look, you may have to go over it 2 or 3 more times. For this screenshot scene, I went over it 3 times to try and create depth (I failed at this, but then again, I had never drawn a screenshot before thisšŸ˜…)
Tumblr media
If you want to be really in depth with the night look though, get your largest brush, expand it, and on a separate layer, cover the whole frame in black, than adjust the transparency to your liking. For the version above, I put it at 40%
Sorry I rambled. I know you were only looking for ways to pose them, but I thought I might as well add in a way to shade them and give them some depth to their limbs.
Well, sorry for rambling, have one hell of a day/night dudeāœŒļø
Does anyone know some good tips on drawing poses for the Daycare Attendants that look more ā€œaliveā€ instead of me just making them stand rigid.
Like I want to draw them leaning over and scrunching down and stuff but I’m struggling lmao any help is appreciated

(I am so sorry, mobile users. This is really long.)
My Mass Effect Andromeda thoughts:
1. I was gonna stream the trial, but proceeded to use almost all 10 hours at once because I couldn’t stop playing. I suppose this is a good thing. I’m definitely streaming it once it’s actually out.
2. I hate the character customization. Mass Effect has always been ugly as fuck when it comes to making characters, but my dudes it is 2017 what is going on here.
2a. Side note but I laughed for like 15 minutes that there is only one ā€œWhite Peopleā€ face and it is honestly the ugliest thing. Cool feature (sorta not but I’m viewing it as a positive) is that there are designated skin tones with each face set. Speaking of sets, all facial features are stuck to a specific preset face. You can slightly move them, but there’s no changing. I’m hoping this is just for the trial, as other things in the game were locked off until it’s official release.
2b. so many pony tails. no undercut. despite reports saying that hairstyles would be less militaristic as you’re not a soldier, they’re more or less the same. let me be the woman i want to be dammit. There were braids, but only one style. Still double the representation compared to previously I guess? I have very much so white people hair so I don’t feel comfortable having an opinion on that subject. I will say that the braids are exclusive to fem!Ryder and m!Ryder gets 2 different textured styles. I, personally, cannot wait for the beautiful mod community to fix this hair travesty, both with representation variation and all these fucking ponytails. Maybe they can make something happen with the faces, but I hold little hope. They had ā€œaltā€ hair colors, so it’s already way better than ME Original Trilogy. My Ryder has blue hair, because of course she does. There’s not much shade difference in the colors available, and some of the unnatural colors were, in fact, so unnatural looking that it was hard to accept as a hair color. dyed hair doesn’t reflect light the way it did in game and it didn’t look like much shade variation between the strands so it occasionally looked like the hair hadn’t actually finished rendering. The color selection suggested a more soft ombre look than was actually present.
3. I like that you can customize your twin also, but limits on the CC still drives me crazy. Male hair diversity isn’t super, like I said before, but it just felt like more than the female counterpart. I just really, really hate ponytails you guys.
3a. In your CC options, you can pick story bits. The only options that connect to the previous games is a selection between your Shepard having been male or female. I suppose that’s so pronouns are correct later on.
4. Prologue: I feel it takes too long, the tutorial is honestly not that great. SAM, your AI, is down for most of it, so you have no idea what anything is. It was fine at first, adding to the worldbuilding and urgency and whatnot but it got irritating by the 30th ā€œunknownā€ enemy.
5. The Omni-Scanner is a neat addition, but it felt sort of...forced at times. More on that later.
6. The prologue story is okay. The ending of it, and the beginning of the actual game, was actually pretty dramatic and I didn’t expect it given the hype around certain characters that Bioware has tried to generate.
6a. Dad Ryder seemed really one dimensional with his kid. Like, never referred to them affectionately even at the last bit. This is sort of explained when you go to his room later, but it felt really hollow to me as a whole. Cool dad fact: CC of your Ryder and their twin decides what Dad looks like. Mine had obscenely blue eyes but grey hair.
6b. Evil dude looked really sad during his introduction and I wanted to be friends with him. This feels like a failed attempt at showing off the ominous silent bad guy, as I immediately started rooting for him. You go, evil dude, touch the stuff and let your dreams be true.
7. I hate the weapon interface. Inventory functions like ME1, allowing you to see the items you’ve picked up (both upgrades and actual weapons) but you cannot equip them. I couldn’t until the first mission after getting my ship. Which is terrible, as I got a sniper rifle I wanted to use and couldn’t for the prologue portion.
8. The Hyperion’s travel system is awful. There’s very little instruction about it. The tram looks as if it’s a one way thing, from the ark to the new citadel-like port, but in actuality you use it to travel around the ark itself too. Didn’t notice until my camera turned slightly to the right and another thing on the board was selectable.
8a. Not travel related, but you do get more info about the ending of the prologue and a new ongoing mission on the Hyperion. It felt like a bit of a slap. It’s all ā€œHere’s this cool new power and a friend BUT ALSO FUCK YOU JON SNOW YOU KNOW NOTHING and you’ll never find out until you go look for these things randomly around. But not around here! Fuck you twice!ā€ It was clearly created to push the story more later on, which is all fine and good, it just ticked me off at this moment.
9. The new Citadel is a goddamn mess. I’m not a huge fan of it right now, though what I’m 100% sure will happen is that as you make more homesteads, the place gets nicer until you’re at endgame and have a fully functional hub. I’ll like it more once it starts changing. It looks like it has really good potential. I hope it functions more than the keep in DA:I, and your choices really DO have an effect on what is opened up and how the society there builds itself.
9a. The Original Trilogy made each race very distinct, with their own speech patterns and everything. I didn’t really get that from this game’s other races. The Salarians didn’t speak in fast bursts with lots of words jammed together, and the Turians more often than not didn’t have that robotic twinge to their speech, and weren’t all that hostile. It seems unlikely to me that there wouldn’t be any left over anger as they left for Andromeda seeing as it’s possible some actually fought in the first contact war. It is about 30 years apart. It was something constantly prevalent in the previous trilogy, which every NPC lived during (at least ME1)
9b. I do, however, love super not Krogan Krogan lady. She’s perfect and I wish I could romance her. You do talk about the genophage. Sucks that she and her clan have no idea that there’s been a cure for over 500 years now.
10. The ship, Tempest, is really nice. I always felt like Normandy was very irritating to navigate around. ME1 especially, but 3 wasn’t so hot either. This one isn’t as large, but it has a really nice flow that I liked. Pathfinder quarters were way better than Shepard’s.
10a. It has a system like the Dragon Age: Inquisition war table where you have timed missions that NPC complete for materials, items, and intel. Seems interesting, but I didn’t see one to completion. They’re still running.
10b. the R&D table is interesting, and I like the separation between the two, but it didn’t feel like a huge asset so early in the game.
11. The traveling system is beautiful. Visually it gets 100% approval. However, it’s extremely slow paced. any selection of a new planet or system takes you back to where you were originally, lets you stare at it a moment, then flies you to the next place where you zoom in for another moment before zooming out and then FINALLY getting information about it. It’s nice, but by the 12th time I was incredibly tired of it.
12. Your Salarian pilot is cool. Not especially Salarian-like, but still I liked him. Cannot kiss. I tried.
13. Material gathering is kind of limited. You scan a whole system, and you have the option to scan planets, but there’s not much point to it as SAM tells you if there’s something worth scanning there. Usually it’s a single deposit of a mineral.
14. I hated the MAKO in ME1, but this one isn’t so bad. I think it helps knowing that I can customize it later.
15. Speaking of customization, you can change the colors of your casual clothes and your armor. It’s the same color selection tool as in CC, so it’s awful. The dial to change the color overlaps with the bubble to select the actual shade so there’s a lot of trial and error involved. Once again, no indication that [SPACE] is necessary to confirm your color choices. I hate the whole design of it.
16. You do meet some companions that you’ll pick up, but you barely interact with them. Good intros though. Really gave them personality right off the bat.
17. ROMANCE: Being fem!Ryder is rough at the start.
17a. Gil is one of the ship’s crew. He’s one of the few genuinely attractive males in all of Mass Effect’s history. As a woman, you can flirt with him, but he turns you down solidly. He’s kind, but firm. He states that he’s interested in men. Which is awesome, because now I have a reason to play a male Ryder after my first play through is done. Female Ryder apologizes, nothing is weird (unlike other interactions) and it actually made me like him more as a character.
17b. Liam kind of blows off your advances but it definitely felt like a rejection. As he wasn’t very clear, I don’t know if he’s a bi character that you have to develop a friendship with first, or if he’s gay and just doesn’t want to come out to your Ryder. I didn’t like the wishy-washiness of the interaction but we’ll just have to see what’s what when the full game is out.
17c. Doc. I forgot her name, so now she’s Doc. I knew this interaction wouldn’t go well, as I’ve read articles about it. She definitely turns you down because you’re a patient. I’ve read that she has a crush on the Krogan that joins you, so is he not a patient too? Either way, she’s very professional about it and as with Gil it made me appreciate her character. Knowing that it’s Natalie Dormer and I’ll never hear her tell me she loves me hurts me deep in my soul though. Why does the world hate me like this???
17d. Blonde biotic woman with the goddamn hair that I want on my Ryder. Cora. I don’t like her. You have the option to hit on her early on, and her reaction felt really awful to me. She gets kind of hostile and all ā€œI already told [person you never met] that I’m not interested in women and I’m telling you too.ā€ Like, ok. Damn. You aren’t my type anyways. I just wanted to see the option play out. 0/10 poor way to handle the interaction. I’m not super fond of the Asari commando thing either. Jack was a kickass biotic too and she was treated like a monster. This woman gets to take part in something very culturally specific like it’s nbd? jnasdlfknasdivhbna, not a fan of her. She looks somewhere between confused and murderous all the time. Also, she walks like Stretch Armstrong. It makes me laugh.
17e. Vetra. The only individual that actually reacts positively to fem!Ryder flirting with her. Even then she really only takes it like a compliment. But, as I love Vetra and much like Garrus I would die for her from first glance, I’ll take it. I think it’ll be a beautiful relationship. She’s also really tall. And pretty. One thing I thought was strange with her is that it always looks like she’s posing when she’s just standing around. One hip is thrust out and her arms are crossed. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think they rigged her to always be in mysterious seductress pose.
17f. I couldn’t flirt with the pilot. Let me kiss the Salarian, damn you Bioware. Also, our nice Scottish friend Suvi can’t be flirted with, but she sounds really soothing to talk to. I’m def a fan of all these non-American, thicker than previously heard, accents on the ship. The Original Trilogy was full of light British accents or full on American. Sort of hard to believe the Alliance was multinational when everyone spoke like they were from the US.
18. Combat: I mostly use the sniper rifle and the pistol. Pistol was nice. I love the sniper rifle in this game. Other ME games it was hard for me to confirm headshots but this one was a clean and clear animation. Very nice. The companion AI was strange at times, as they’d just use their abilities but in odd places so the skills would get stuck in corners or just go off to nowhere. There was combat stutter on the first planet you can visit but I think that’s more my graphics card. The update refuses to finish so I’m stuck 2 updates behind where I should be.
I have, like, an hour I think left so I’m gonna try to rush through a male Ryder play and see how companion reactions differ. I’m really only in this for the romance, you know.

REVIEW: AR Toys Hellman (Hellboy) 1/6 Figure
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
Until Data Falls…
What follows is a data friendly written review of this particular piece.
For everyone else who isn’t a cheapskate, or isn’t otherwise vexed by the ridiculous process of data bundles, please have a look at the comprehensive video review above.
[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=ā€29347″ img_size=ā€largeā€][vc_column_text]
INTRODUCTION:
In a world where everyone thinks the full complement of Super-hero related books comprises exclusively of Marvel and DC, it breaks my heart to know that save for those two movies with Ron Pearlman, most folks will never know the epic wonder that is Hellboy.
Now don’t get me wrong, I loved the Ron Pearlman/Guillermo Del Toro movies – they were fun, fantastical and had just enough gravitas to make me feel sorry for a giant dude in red prosthetics.
With that being said I was heartbroken to find that there is almost next to no decent (or affordable) Hellboy figures. Then there was the other problem that I have become something of a 1/6 scale figure addict in recent years and the Hot Toys Version of the character costs waaaay too many body parts for my taste.
Enter AR Toys, and their ā€œHellmanā€ figure.
Now before I go on, Neither GES or ZHM Entertainment support, endorse, recommend or otherwise encourage the purchase of unlicensed, counterfeit, third party or other types of figures through any other channels that aren’t the official legit ones. This is just an article for information to talk about something the writer found on the inter-webs.
Alrighty –disclaimers done let’s talk about the figure.
The Hellman figure bears an uncanny resemblance to said Hot Toys Hellboy Figure.
As is always the case with a figure of this nature, we will consider the two cardinal A’s – Aesthetics and Aish-Factor.
AESTHETICS:
[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=ā€29349″ img_size=ā€largeā€][vc_column_text]When we talk about ā€œAestheticsā€ what we are referring to is the overall visual appeal of the piece. In other words, ā€œwhat does it look like- and how is going impact on your overall display?ā€
This category includes a discussion on accessories and articulation where applicable.
So lets get cracking…
Okay so the figure is a 1/6 scale figure and measures roughly 33 cm and is rendered in a customised muscular body.
The figure also includes a total of 4 Head sculpts, a Cigar, a Revolver, the Big Baby weapon (a giant ass gun used by Hellboy in the Movies and comics), 2x specially sculpted right hand of doom parts, 6x big Baby ammunition shells, genuine leather clothing items (trench coat, pants, boots and belt), a rosary, a black short sleeve T-shirt and a figure stand.
Before I go on, I just want to say that the accessories look amazing!
The head sculpts all bear a striking resemblance to Ron Pearlman as Hellboy and allow for a great range of display options. With excellent texturing and shading that simulate skin against the backdrop of the fine sculpted details on all the head sculpts I was incredibly impressed by the overall execution the there.
Another thing worth mentioning is that the 3rd head (a re-order incentive bonus) features a more comic-accurate visage for the figure which is a welcome inclusion.
The other accessories boasts the same fine attention to detail and are on the whole quite impressive. However, I did notice that there are some issues with the various clips and clamps across the figure which makes setting the figure up or posing the figure a pain in the proverbial nuggets.
On the whole though the accessories hep one really bring the character to life.
To this end, I was happy with the stature of the figure. It is large and imposing though not so overly done that it is out of scale with my other 1/6 scale figures – a typical challenge with unlicensed figures.
The torso features a custom stylised rubber body which is placed over a wire armature and features Hellboy’s scars, and markings etched into the material. This attention to detail is most impressive.
The figure boasts roughly 30 points of articulation.
While you can get the figure in some pretty awesome poses, given the size of the figure some look ridiculous. So the extent of the poseability is rendered moot to a lesser or greater degree. The wire armature does wonders to make the figure a little more hardy, but when bent and posed the rubber becomes warped which ruins the effect at the biceps.
I eventually decided to put the t-shirt and trench coat on to hide this challenge.
Assuming you are comfortable doing this – well then suffice to say that the fully assembled figure is wonderful to behold.
I eventually ended up doing some basic mods to my figure to bulk him up a little just to make him look slightly more proportional. I also used hot glue to fix some of the issues I was experiencing with attaching some accessories.
Still, even without the mods, the figure nails the overall aesthetic.
With that being covered, lets turn our attention to the next issue.
AISH- FACTOR!!!
[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=ā€29355″ img_size=ā€largeā€][vc_column_text]The so called ā€œAish- Factorā€ is a generic standard I coined where I assess the overall execution of the figure against the background of it’s build, price, availability and any other relevant factor.
In essence we assess the degree to which a figure make’s one go ā€œAish!ā€ with excitement, or ā€œEishā€¦ā€ with disappointment.
So here’s what we have:
As I said above, Hellboy figures are in short supply and are kak expensive!
I’m not even going to depress you with how much the licensed 1/6 scale figure by Hot Toys goes for these days!
This piece was a welcome opportunity to fill this gap in my collection and while I wouldn’t say it was ā€œcheapā€ in the classic sense, it did represent excellent value for money just on the basis of the included accessories, stylised body and multiple head sculpts.
As you can imagine, this is not by any means the perfect figure- as I mentioned there are some minor build issues on the accessories and the figure itself.
I found that some of the clips and straps were not particularly hardy at all. In addition, the body is coated with a customised rubber-like material to give the figure that ā€œHellboyā€ look.
I worry that the rubber might begin flaking in the future, but nothing I could see makes this a pressing concern.
At the time I did my video I was irritated with the amount of work it took to assemble the figure. However, now in the weeks between getting the figure and now having agreed it into me display I have simmered down and decided that as long as you give yourself time and space to make changes on the figure you really shouldn’t have an issue.
Like I said above I did some basic modifications to give it the overall look I preferred though this isn’t essential.
As far as I am concerned this is probably ranking up there as one of my best buys this year (issues notwithstanding) just because of all the amazing display options it presents. For full details be sure to watch the video review embedded in this write up.
For now though, I frikken thrilled with this figure and it elicits a resounding Aish!!![/vc_column_text][vc_gallery type=ā€image_gridā€ images=ā€29353,29354,29356,29357,29358,29359,29360,29361,29350″][vc_column_text]
