I’ve been watching Amphibia while studying. I should definitely do a rewatch during the summer, but it’s occurred to me that Amphibia’s strengths are criminally underrated.

Amphibia feels like a more focused show than TOH. It has its flaws ofc especially in Season 3, but Amphibia’s cast comes across as a lot more developed than TOH’s cast. I mean, Andrias got a dedicated flashback episode and Belos didn’t???

Amphibia’s execution of the found family trope is one of the best things I’ve seen in animation. In contrast, I always felt that King, Lilith, Eda, and the Hexside crew are plot devices to get Luz where she needs to go. Eda has some depth but generally speaking TOH never “got into their heads,” unlike with the Plantars, Sasha, Marcy, Grime, and Andrias.

And I gotta praise Amphibia’s ending!!! I wish more kids cartoons embraced the idea of permanent, bittersweet change. The idea of letting things go but not forgetting them.

So while I agree Amphibia is more focused, I actually don't think that's what the bigger difference is between TOH and Amphibia that I think needs to be highlighted. No, instead, I'm interrogate something you said: Does Belos not get a dedicated backstory episode? For that matter... Does he potentially get MORE time spent on backstory than Andrias?

Andrias literally only gets The Core and the King. He actually gets VERY little screentime, mostly because the effects of his cruelty are more important than what he does himself. So for backstory, he gets 11 minutes. MAYBE you could stretch to like 12 or 13 if you want to include hints to Lief but that's all post her time with him. So 11 minutes because Andrias only gets one segment, not two.

What does Belos get?

Well... I think everyone just forgets about Elsewhere Elsewhen. That IS backstory. That is previous characterization. It's not a flashback but it is still interacting with a Belos earlier in the timeline, like a backstory exposition dump or a flashback does. And interacting with Philip is the main purpose of the A plot of the episode, even if it takes a bit to get to him and then he dips out before the end.

As the author of the journal though, he also counts for backstory whenever passages of the journal are told to us. It's unreliable but it is still previous characterization. So stuff like Eclipse Lake and the end of Looking Glass Ruins adds a little here and there.

Then of course... What the fuck do you call Hollow Mind if not a dedicated backstory episode to Belos? The majority of the run time is literally go through his brain, and his memories, to show his rise to power. His backstory. And while there is technically a B plot, it doesn't take up much time so probably at least a third of the episode is spent on this and these are 22 minute episodes. If just two thirds get spent on backstory, that's more than Andrias gets.

So why doesn't it feel like that? Why does it feel like we get a VERY complete version of Andrias' backstory, despite seeing cumulatively three days in a row of his life, while it feels like we were never told Belos'?

Efficiency. Amphibia is a VERY efficient work. It crams a LOT into its run times. It's part of why the episodes are so satisfying because they actually manage to tell complete stories with morals, sometimes their own A and B plots in an 11 minute segment and actually move the characters forward a full step within the span of that time. It does this while also being hilarious and action packed, much more than TOH or, honestly, a lot of cartoons. Not every episode segment counts for this but ESPECIALLY the important ones do and The Core and the King should be taught in classes for how to get across a character's motivations and backstory in a nuanced, breezy way while also being DENSE. AS. FUCK.

In eleven minutes, we get a clear idea of the utopia that Andrias used to live in, the cost of that utopia, the pressures upon him as a prince, how deep his relationships are with two other characters, Lief gets some genuinely good characterization that helps explain her choice, a logical progression of events that matches with the sillier side of Andrias we know of, an escalation and then a climax. We can VERY clearly see what Andrias lost, what he is trying to get back, and why he would want it back on multiple levels, both societal, familial and even personal, that will motivate into being a MONSTER for a thousand years. All while still being a lot of fun and having some really great jokes. It introduces so many elements but it never feels bogged down by any of this. Instead, it chose the PERFECT moment to get across everything it needed to and left very few questions that you as an audience couldn't figure out yourselves. This also all while being explicit about much of the motivation and what not instead of relying on background details.

Which TOH can't claim for Belos. In Elsewhere Elsewhen, we see that Philip hates witches, that his journal is unreliable and that he has ALWAYS been an asshole and a manipulator. That's befitting who he will be but doesn't actually tell us jack shit. It also includes I guess how he met the Collector but that's moving plot, not expanding on your villain. Because the journal is unreliable, it tells us very little to nothing about him except for some reason he donated his journal to the people he fucking despised. Then Hollow Mind shows how he came to power... But not who he is. Not his motivation, what he actually wants to accomplish besides murder, etc. like that. The paintings in the background tell you far more just by being far more suggestive of what he's been through.

TOH is fucking awful when it comes to density. Most episodes, not even just Belos, have the problem of only taking half steps. Each of Belos' parts are those half steps. Revealing only one or two elements when it easily could have shown more to be more satisfying. As an example: Amphibia has a GREAT episode between Ivy and her mom about rebellion, the consequences of fighting what your parent wants for you, why they might do the things they do, etc. like that. In 11 minutes, we get a genuinely complex relationship between Ivy and her mom who haven't had much talk about each other or their relationship up until now. Meanwhile, TOH decides to focus on Luz being expelled for the episode about Amity and Odalia, meaning Amity is in like... Three, maybe five minutes of that episode? A full minute of that being the intro to the episode where she's just showing off the abomaton?

Because it isn't actually focused on Amity, the relationship between Amity and Odalia isn't actually explored. Because they can't explore that, they also need to now make Odalia cartoonishly villainous so as to fit the fact that Luz also spends very little time with her due to making the conflict be about Hexside so we have to waste some time with a stock standard montage of Luz, Willow and Gus trying to get back in. And by the end, what is the resolution between Amity and Odalia? "Get in my way again and I will kick your fucking ass."

Much deep. Very brave.

There's TONS of stuff like this where Amphibia is genuinely the work trying to do more interesting, more meaningful and deeper things than TOH and managing to do it in literally half the time. If not even less. That breakneck pace is part of what makes Amphibia feel like a kids show but it's also what makes it just more enjoyable to watch.

Which actually makes TOH fit in better with our current era of streaming television. TOH is constantly baiting you for the payoffs it promises. It keeps swearing that its elements are deeper than they appear so make sure to tune in next week because this SURELY can't be all there is to, right?

Unfortunately, that is all there is to it. And once you realize that and look at the show with that sort of lens, it starts falling apart. It's part of why TOH should be thankful it was shortened. It lets people more easily claim that it just needed another season. Another fourteen episodes. That TOTALLY would have solved all the problems with episodes that happened even before the shortening.

That is extremely rarely how this works everyone. Sorry.

Okay so hypothetically speaking, if Luz were to use the time pools again and met Robyn how would their meeting go?

The boring answer is that nothing big would happen since she probably wouldn't clock he's a Clawthorne if he doesn't reveal himself as one. Luz'd maybe draw a connection to Hunter appearance wise but even then the only thing Roby and Hunter have in common is the nose shape, which is not a Clawthornes only trait (see Alador; also neither Lilith nor Eda have that nose shape) and the hair noodle. But that's two things you wouldn't pay that much attention to and not that unique to immediately clock the connection. Just a "Huh. Looks similar. Oh well anyways-"

The fun answer is that it is somehow revealed Roby is a Clawthorne - by himself or by a third person - and Luz is like "Clawthorne ancestor??" and it slips her tongue that Lilith and Eda exist or something leaving Robyn sorta stunned and sorta happy. Like.. wow okay I guess our bloodline goes on for another few centuries???

You are Beloved, and you have left Clerres and are making your way Northward to where you know your Catalyst will soon appear. You were born to farmers, but they were gentle, learned people, keeping their histories in songs and dances that told the story of the love between the azure sky and the ochre earth. Clerres was a place of opal and pearl, towers wrought with poet's hands, reaching toward the arc of heaven. The people there were wasps, beautiful but dangerous, allowing no one but their own into the sanctity of their nest. Though you often felt the burn of their sting, you never wanted for soft beds or sweet water or richly spiced food. Good paper and heavy pens and rare inks in every color were pressed upon you, and you often snuck from the warm cocoon of your bed to the vast library, curling up in a chair with a book and reading until dawn. In Buck, you stop at a roadside inn (the white of your skin and hair disguised) to rest and eat before going on toward Buckkeep. You inquire about a meal and a man takes your coin and points you toward a huge kettle on the hearth, tended by a boy with a finger buried deep in one nostril. When he turns to look at you, he wipes his hand on his shirtfront and then uses the same hand to take your bowl and fill it. There's nowhere to sit where you won't be constantly jostled by elbows and hairy arms, so you go to crouch in one corner to eat. (You have not been provided a spoon, and though you have your own utensils, you're not fool enough to use them in front of so many people that would be tempted by the flash of silver. You've been given a chunk of bread, however, and you are reminded of meals with your family where everyone ate from a single large bowl, scooping up bits of stew with fresh-baked bread. This bread is a few days from fresh, but at least you don't have to eat with your hands.) Meal finished, you return to the innkeep and ask where you might have a bath. Then you ask again. You ask a third time, trying a different word for "bath" and then reordering the sentence to make your meaning more clear. He points you to the well outside. He gestures toward the beach. Body." and pretend to scrub under your arms. A woman-- a minstrel-- taps you on the shoulder. She's recognized the pattern on your cloak as Jamaillian, and speaks to you in that language. There is no place to bathe here, she says, as this inn does not have a tub big enough to sit in nor anyone willing to haul and heat that much water. Buckkeep is only a day's travel away, and they have a steam-house where they sit and sweat out the dust and grime on their bodies and then scrape themselves clean with salt. In private? No, but there are separate houses for men and women. And worry not, even the guardsmen there will give the bench a wipe if they leave a streak behind. The tattoo wasn't so bad. It actually looks quite nice, colorful and lots of dragons, which you like. It hardly hurt at all! You can go back to Clerres, they'll be so happy to see you, just walk on back, it's fine, it'll be great, you could probably even send a message ahead and they'd have someone meet you halfway with a big tub of hot water and a hefty cake of good soap and you can all laugh about this later over a big bowl of hot soup that no one has spat in it's fine it'll be fine I'm sure the others can handle it what's a little Unending Darkness between friends haha let's go back to Clerres help help help

She hands Vee a couple of paper rectangles. (That's right, humans use paper snails.) While Camila goes to pay for all the stuff, they wait in a line at the food court and decide what they want. Hot dogs, apparently, are just like not dogs. They're still not actually dogs. And just like Luz said, the number next to their image on the board is smaller than anything else listed. “Pretzels, like the little crunchy bread things?” Gus asks. Those were called pretzels too, he thinks. “Sort of,” Luz says. “These ones are really big and soft and warm. You can still get something to dip them in, or you could get them with sugar.” Oh oh oh. Okay. The mustard soup stuff was for dipping. And the pretzels are bland because you add things to them. Gus exercises great restraint and does not run back to the sample cart for a third cup of mustard and more pretzels to try them that way.

Or maybe the CATs (... he really hates that the name stuck) will find whatever's left of them. Either way, they need to know. And they need to know what happened to Belos. Darius needs to know what happened to Belos. He's probably dead. Darius should hope that he's dead. That's what Hunter wanted. Both Hunters. (And if he isn't? What if they find him alive in there, somehow? Darius can't be sure he won't hesitate to finish him off. But that's why he needs Eberwolf and Raine with him. They don't know there's any reason to want the emperor alive. And Titan knows the demon would jump at the chance to maul Belos.) “Of course I want to,” they say. “I just don't know if we should. It seems like too much of a risk to take right now.” “If you have any other ideas, I would love to hear them. We haven't done anything useful in days. Hiding here while the Boiling Isles falls into chaos helps no one.” They try to take another drink, stalling for time. But the glass is empty. Caleb's roommate and best friend. Went with Caleb during his first superhero mission and got physically shot while there.

KATE DHANANI

A friend of Guy's who eventually became a friend of Caleb's. She's the martial arts trainer for the Power Pills.

AVERY RODRIGUEZ

The first supervillain created by Future Tech. He's 16 years old and was given to Future Tech as an experiment by his parents in exchange for promotions.

TRAVIS BIRMAN

Guy's childhood friend and Merri's boyfriend. He's just the only friend character who doesn't know that his friend is a superhero.

One of Merri's best friends. She is just as kind and sweet as Merri, but much less energetic.

A superpowered cult member who saved Sibyl and Caleb's lives when they were captured. He sacrificed himself to help the two of them escape. His status is unknown though he reassured Sibyl that the cult wouldn't kill him.

Benny is Sibyl's biology teacher and is the person who helped Sibyl through the darkest moment of his life.

VINNY RAMONE

Not seen onscreen, but he's Sibyl's ex.

Sibyl's childhood friend who tried to trade away his life in order to join The Cult of Lacrima. Her status is also unknown.

PHYLLIS WORRALL

One of London's obligatory lackeys. The other of which, Lilith, apparently left London very recently for unknown reasons and has not been seen onscreen.

KRAVEN GREEVES

The owner of the martial arts dojo that the Power Pills train at. He knows what's going on with the superheroes, but he knows it's not his place to say anything.

//Reasoning below:

Kotone - Both characters are female protagonists from the third mainline installment of their franchises (Danganronpa V3 and Persona 3) but are pretty unconventional in how they are presented (Kaede is the initial protagonist of V3, but then dies and her mantle is taken by Shuichi, and Kotone only appears in the canon of Persona 3 Portable, and isn't canon to the main series). They're both very gregarious, humorous, positive, and joyful, especially when compared to their dark blue haired and brooding male counterparts (Shuichi Saihara and Makoto Yuki). Unlike the other protagonists in their series, their conversations in all of their incarnations show a wide range of emotions, including sarcasm, humor, seriousness, and more. Both girls also wield blade-ended polearms as their weapon of choice.

Yun Jin - Both are widely recognized by their musical talent (Kaede is the Ultimate Pianist and Yun Jin is the leader of the Yuheng Opera Troupe) and both wield a polearm as their primary weapon of choice. Both are also outgoing and willing to try new things, in spite of their careers being rooted in classical origins.

Demyx - Both fight with weapons based on musical intruments (Kaede's Mozart MK2 is modelled after a piano while Demyx wields a Sitar weapon) and both are very casual and easygoing despite their immense strength and power. Both also work for a powerful organization, but on different sides (Future Foundation and Organization XIII)

Sara - In addition to being female high school students caught in a death game, they are also the protagonists of their games (at least initially for Kaede) and they rise fast to become the head of their respective groups. They are also highly regarded by their peers, and despite their tendency to take responsibility for themselves when things don't go as planned, the others appear to rely on them in most circumstances, in spite of the fact that both are still completely capable of doing "bad" things (Kaede almost killed Rantaro in the V3 universe attempting to murder the Killing Game's mastermind, and Sara has proven to be quite adept at manipulating others). One could argue that both are victims of the "Redshirt" trope (Despite being portrayed as the protagonist throughout, Kaede dies at the end of Danganronpa V3's first chapter. Sara is traumatized from the beginning after being made to witness her best friend Joe's death in a similar plot.)

Raine - Both are musicians with musical based powers and weapons, are are recognized as a leader of their specific group (The V3 Kids and the B.A.T's/C.A.T's) Both are very kind-hearted and nice to a fault, but they are both competent leaders and surprisingly good tacticians and fighters, who don't hesitate to ask difficult questions or make difficult decisions. They both have a close relationship with someone who many consider to be dangerous and/or a loose cannon, but trust them inexplicably (Kuripa Kurafto, whom Kaede sees as an older brother/mentor figure, and Eda Clawthorne, whom to Raine is old childhood friend and eventual partner). They both are shown to be incredibly devoted, selfless, and lively individuals who enjoy having fun, and they both enjoy making light fun of their friends, particularly their love partner (Shuichi and Eda), however, both have also been known to make heavy sacrifices for their sake (In an effort to reveal the Killing Game's mastermind, Kaede not only attempted to kill the hidden enemy, but forfeited her chance to escape and ultimately met her demise; while to stop the Day of Unity and save all the witches, Raine was prepared to give their life in order to defeat Eberwolf and Darius Deamonne.)

Here I am, back with more The Owl House! Where we last off, Philip, bastard that he is, had just possessed Raine, ready to mess everything up.

We cut back to Hexside where Willow’s been busy extracting Luz’ traumatic memories. I don’t feel like taking individual screenshots of all the photos, so you guys are just gonna have to trust me as I describe them:

The first photo I believe is from the very first episode, when Luz is looking at the portal door, just before she decides to stay in the Demon Realm and learn magic. The second is from Adventures in the Elements, when she stol-I mean, borrowed Amity’s training wand without asking. I’m not 100% sure on the third one, but I think it’s from Agony of a Witch? Right after the duel between Lilith and Eda.

The fourth photo is from Yesterday’s Lie, showing the conversation Luz and Camila had in the rain. The fifth photo is from Elsewhere and Elsewhen, when Luz showed Philip the light glyph. The sixth photo is from Hollow Mind, and unless I’m mistaken, that particular frame is from when Philip was like ”Out of all the grimwalkers [Hunter] looked the most like him.”

The seventh photo is from King’s Tide, right before King pushes Luz through the portal door and into the (relative) safety of the Human Realm. The eight photo is from Enchanting Grom Fright, when Grometheus the Fearbringer transformed into Luz’ greatest fear.

If I were to try and establish some kind of through-line (or a red string, as every swedish teacher would call it) I’d say that each of these memories show some situation or decision Luz feels guilty about.

She feels guilty about the time she stole Amity’s training wand and put everyone in danger of the slitherbeast. She feels guilty about teaching Philip the light glyph, helping him meet The Collector, and for him nearly killing Hunter in Hollow Mind. She feels guilty because she couldn’t keep the family together during the event of the Day of Unity.

Then we have the case of Camila. Luz feels guilty over staying in the Demon Realm and lying to her mother about it. I mean, the fact that it was her greatest fear during Grom kinda says it all, doesn’t it?

Speaking of Camila, and I CANNOT believe I didn’t remember this earlier, but Camila did make Luz promise she’d stay in the Human Realm in Yesterday’s Lie. She did that, and Luz agreed, and then I go acting like Luz saying she was going to stay in the Human Realm forever in Thanks to Them came out of nowhere. Actually, I didn’t think it came out of nowhere, but you get my point. The idea of staying in the Human Realm forever is not a new one to Luz, Camila put it in her head.

As for Camila… I think i said it pretty well last episode; Camila has come to realize that Luz will likely never truly be happy staying in the Human Realm. And now, looking at these photographs, she sees a monster taking on a twisted form of herself, locked in combat with her own daughter.

And, hm… Willow’s gonna show Hunter the picture from the Flyer Derby game in Any Sport in a Storm, with Flapjack. Hm, hm, hm… that might not be a great way to cheer him up.

(somewhat unrelated, but I just thought of it. How long have they been awake? It was nighttime when they left the Human Realm and it’s been pretty non-stop since then. I dunno, maybe they all took a nap at the owl house)

Oh, Willow knows, doesn’t she? I mean yeah, maybe it could be interpreted as ”we don’t care that you brainwashed since a little kid to be a child soldier and helped the bad guy do evil things.” But it could also be read as ”we don’t care if you were made as a clone of someone else because you are your own person.”

It could also be read as both, which is probably the case. Even a few words can convey complex meanings.

Okay, not as bad a reaction as I was fearing. The picture didn’t really do much to cheer Hunter up it seems, but it at least didn’t make things worse. And in the long run, having a physical memory of Flapjack is probably a good thing. For now he’s not sure what to feel about it.

And, like… it literally happened a couple of hours ago. I wanna see Hunter be happy again as much as the next guy, but maybe give the boy some space to grieve and be sad and we can start working on acceptance later.

Did you though? Cause Hunter’s reaction was rather subdued, not a whole lot to indicate that you made anything worse per se. Or is it not that you made things ”worse” that is the failure, but rather that you failed to make it ”better,” is that’s what’s getting to you?

Going back to that conversation in The Owl House, Willow is the reliable one. The one to save everyone’s asses. She’s The Big Guy, to use a TV Tropes term.

So what about when she can’t be The Big Guy? What about when she can’t protect her friends (or family, let’s not forget her parents are turned into puppets), or when she can’t help them with their emotional troubles? What does that make her then? Less than herself? Just half-a-witch Willow, a dubious figure, not really good for much.

I think I said previously that there are only so many storms a single tree can take before it falls. But that’s why they need other trees around them, to help them stand against the wind.

more good progress today! realized how hard it is to write a conversation between two people who do not speak the other's language! usually whenever i write firefly talking to people its either in her pov (she tends to understand others better than they understand her) or its like, eda, king, or luzmari. eda who is soul-bound to firefly. king who can See Dust and thus lowkey read minds to an extent. and luzmari who is. well she doesnt have any special power shes just lived w firefly for long enough to understand.

needless to say the collector is Not good at owlspeak. they will be one day! but that day is not today.

its always so fun when the characters sort of run away from you. king and the collector weren't going to start fighting until the last chapter--but they certainly disagreed! so now the fight's started sooner, which is good overall, i think--i've still got the big whammy saved up for that last chapter, and they've spent the entire story drifting apart. its a good way to kick off the final third of this fic.

my favorite part of what i wrote today:

“Quite frankly,” King says, and he shrugs them off, “I don’t even think you understand that you’ve doomed the entire Isles.” He recoils, and his head stings as though King clawed him, but there’s no wounds he can see. Still he doesn’t remember how to breathe. The world is blurry at the edges. King’s stardust is so far away and thundering. “I—” Their words catch in their throat. “What did I do?” “You aided Belos!” He looks so much like his dad. With the snarl ‘n the anger ‘n the way he towers over them, ‘n they cower back further, wanna bare their teeth but it’s all blunt so what good would that do? “Without you, Belos’s would’ve never been able to start the coven system! To cut down all the palistrom trees! You talk a whole lot about missing how things were when you’re the reason they aren’t like that anymore!” “He said he would free me!” “Oh,” King snaps, and his eyes cut right to the center of them, piercing, “and you believed him?” “I don’t.” Everything is going fuzzy. They keep blinking to keep how many Kings there are straight. “I was trapped. I didn’t wanna be trapped! I didn’t do anything to be trapped! Apple hints at AI integration in chip design process

Apple is beginning to use generative artificial intelligence to help design the chips that power its devices. The company’s hardware chief, Johny Srouji, made that clear during a speech last month in Belgium. He said Apple is exploring AI as a way to save time and reduce complexity in chip design, especially as chips grow more advanced.

“Generative AI techniques have a high potential in getting more design work in less time, and it can be a huge productivity boost,” Srouji said. He was speaking while receiving an award from Imec, a semiconductor research group that works with major chipmakers around the world.

He also mentioned how much Apple depends on third-party software from electronic design automation (EDA) companies. The tools are key to developing the company’s chips. Synopsys and Cadence, two of the biggest EDA firms, are both working to add more AI into their design tools.

From the A4 to Vision Pro: A design timeline

Srouji’s remarks offered a rare glimpse into Apple’s internal process. He walked through Apple’s journey, starting with the A4 chip in the iPhone 4, launched in 2010. Since then, Apple has built a range of custom chips, including those used in the iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac. The company also developed the chips that run the Vision Pro headset.

He said that while hardware is important, the real challenge lies in design. Over time, chip design has become more complex and now requires tight coordination between hardware and software. Srouji said AI has the potential to make that coordination faster and more reliable.

Why Apple is working with Broadcom on server chips

In late 2024, Apple began a quiet project with chip supplier Broadcom to develop its first AI server chip. The processor, known internally as “Baltra,” is said to be part of Apple’s larger plan to support more AI services on the back end. That includes features tied to Apple Intelligence, the company’s new suite of AI tools for iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Baltra is expected to power Apple’s private cloud infrastructure. Unlike devices that run AI locally, this chip will sit in servers, likely inside Apple’s own data centres. It would help handle heavier AI workloads that are too much for on-device chips.

On-device vs. cloud: Apple’s AI infrastructure split

Apple is trying to balance user privacy with the need for more powerful AI features. Some of its AI tools will run directly on devices. Others will use server-based chips like Baltra. The setup is part of what Apple calls “Private Cloud Compute.”

The company says users won’t need to sign in, and data will be kept anonymous. But the approach depends on having a solid foundation of hardware – both in devices and in the cloud. That’s where chips like Baltra come in. Building its own server chips would give Apple more control over performance, security, and integration.

No backup plan: A pattern in Apple’s hardware strategy

Srouji said Apple is used to taking big hardware risks. When the company moved its Mac lineup from Intel to Apple Silicon in 2020, it didn’t prepare a backup plan.

“Moving the Mac to Apple Silicon was a huge bet for us. There was no backup plan, no split-the-lineup plan, so we went all in, including a monumental software effort,” he said.

The same mindset now seems to apply to Apple’s AI chips. Srouji said the company is willing to go all in again, trusting that AI tools can make the chip design process faster and more precise.

EDA firms like Synopsys and Cadence shape the roadmap

While Apple designs its own chips, it depends heavily on tools built by other companies. Srouji mentioned how important EDA vendors are to Apple’s chip efforts. Cadence and Synopsys are both updating their software to include more AI features.

Synopsys recently introduced a product called AgentEngineer. It uses AI agents to help chip designers automate repetitive tasks and manage complex workflows. The idea is to let human engineers focus on higher-level decisions. The changes could make it easier for companies like Apple to speed up chip development.

Cadence is also expanding its AI offerings. Both firms are in a race to meet the needs of tech companies that want faster and cheaper ways to design chips.

What comes next: Talent, testing, and production

As Apple adds more AI into its chip design, it will need to bring in new kinds of talent. That includes engineers who can work with AI tools, as well as people who understand both hardware and machine learning.

At the same time, chips like Baltra still need to be tested and manufactured. Apple will likely continue to rely on partners like TSMC for chip production. But the design work is moving more in-house, and AI is playing a bigger role in that shift.

How Apple integrates these AI-designed chips into products and services remains to be seen. What’s clear is that the company is trying to tighten its control over the full stack – hardware, software, and now the infrastructure that powers AI.

Do you think if Owl House’s third season were longer instead of being crammed into 3 long episodes, it would’ve been better?

I actually did a blog about this literally the night before the S3 finale and the finale did not prove me wrong!

But I want to emphasize here that a lot of these problems... are due to S2 and S1. S3 is how it is BECAUSE of the writing choices the team made going into it. There were ALWAYS going to be problems with S3 because of how S2A was paced, because of the INSANE decisions made in the face of the shortening in S2B like the Collector. Just the insane amount of mismanaged time. But I like to provide evidence:

No usable villains: S1 had the most amount of threats that could be taken seriously and even they weren't treated the best. The EC were still mostly bumblers who could be taken out by Eda or Hooty with EASE, Lilith is used for comedy far more than threat in S1, even if her role as straight man works to keep some of her menace, Kikimora is barely there and Belos is introduced at the end of the season. All the one off villains are pathetic and usually defeated through brute force in their episodes proving that except by schemes, like Really Small Problems, they're all fucked going against Luz in S2 who now has actual power behind her. So by the end of S1, you have Hunter, Kikimora and Belos. S2A will then go on to make Hunter immediately not a villain, Kikimora a joke by the end of it and ignore Belos entirely until S2B while introducing no new real villains so now they only had BELOS and their time is running out. Also, their only human realm villain is a joke who got beat by Camila, let alone anyone with magic. Speaking of:

Edit: I straight up forgot to mention the coven heads but S2 does technically set them up... and then destroys the coven system, giving them no systemic power, and Luz literally saved all of theirs lives so they have no reason to fight her. Also because the Collector is straight up not a villain in S3, he would not be sending them out to kill people even if that were his style so they don't count as usable villains and neither does the Collector.

Power Scale Issues: In literally the sixth episode, Willow singlehandedly beats the shit out of an entire squad of trained MONSTER HUNTERS without even the element of surprise. She's just that strong. By S2's end, EVERYONE will be at her level. Luz at the START of S2, before glyph combos are introduced, takes down the Selkidamus effectively single handedly. She literally only needed physical strength of pulling the thing in and NO ONE acts like it's a question if she can slay it once she's given a sword. It's really fucking bad. And as they have magic in the human realm, all of these characters are still at that power level for what would have been the first half of the season. This means threats and villains are out of the question. How about character work?

Character Blandness: Willow has no character. She is wishy washy all the way through the series and this is true even in S1 where she is shy for half the episodes and also the most brazen person you know in the other half, sometimes in the same episode. Escaping Expulsion murdered about half of Amity's potential and Reaching Out made sure that there would literally never be a conflict about Lumity and made Amity only a bland love interest with daddy issues and her dad isn't in the human realm so you got nothing on her for the first half. Hunter had to have almost all of his shit dealt with by the end of S2 so he's a certified good guy at their side by the Day of Unity who at least half of the cast have accepted so all you have is backstory angst which they can only do so much of without it being repetitive or boring, especially if you want the BIG reveal to only happen shortly before his possession. Luz has her angst which can't be resolved until post Belos revealing it so you have half a season where NO ONE CAN DO ANYTHING. You theoretically have Camila fluff and Vee angst/fluff potentially but people got pissed at Hop Pop and Sprig getting episodes dedicated to them in the human realm instead of the plot. How would most have reacted to characters who have made barely an appearance stealing half a season from the entire Hexide Squad?

Human Realm is Bad: By the end of S1, the Isles has cellphones, it has televisions, it broadcast news, it will fight for a wrong unjustly done, etc. S2 only doubles down as it introduces robots, child endangerment laws and other things that are just part of the human realm. That's why ALL of the fish out of water jokes in Thanks to Them are utter shit and require characters acting like complete morons because the two worlds are the SAME. And they have almost always been that way. The only difference is that one has electricity, the other has magic. As such, going to the human realm is just not compelling. It doesn't even have thematic reasons to do so except I guess to FINALLY actually show Luz being bullied and they didn't even do that in the specials.

And sure, stuff with the resistance could have been neat in the second half. The first half could have included good fluff like Lumity dates and Gus freaking out about the human realm for an episode. But... It would still be needing to introduce elements. It would still be scrambling for ways to fill the time because S2 killed most of the potential for the characters and was so focused on that goal, even in S2A, that it didn't introduce compelling plot elements for drama or good villains to play into its adventure elements.

Could it have been better? Possibly. But a lot of people felt how much S3's specials were just padding. Just wasted time. Now TRIPLE the length of the season?

Yeah... The shortening was a blessing, not a curse.

i saw the collection of art displayed at the gallery nucleus event and ive been obsessed with these two pictures since so here are some details i noticed:

luz and eda are both wearing that grudgeby jacket, obviously.

Eda’s jacket has a patch on the left elbow when eda is wearing it. this was shown in the show as well. luz’s left elbow isn’t shown but we can assume the patch is still there.

luz, however, has a patch on her right elbow, which was where she tore the sleeve during the belos fight in king’s tide. we can assume hunter probably patched it up.

lilith and eda seem to have discovered their fashion taste in their teens and stuck with it to this day. lilith is in a similar long skirt and boots to what she wears in the show, and eda has the spiky/torn style dress look. guess she later decided to wear similar shoes to lilith though.

speaking of shoes though raine honey what are you wearing,,,, are those ,,,shoelaces tied around your socks??? that can’t be comfortable or easy to get on/off,,,was this a fashion trend in their time???

gus’s shirt looks like it was two different shirts sewn into one shirt. i assume hunter did that for him too

gus is also still wearing two watches on one wrist and probably wearing the third on his other. boi’s got drip

vee’s got an anklet. I wonder if this is an allusion to the ring on her tail in her basilisk form?

luz has the portal key and a king-shaped keychain on her belt. does that mean they’ll end the show with her having a new portal so she can live in both worlds? that seems to be what the show is building towards

amity’s hair faded in season 3 and her roots were growing back but i think in here she redyed her hair to be a bright pink like before? i definitely don’t see her roots anymore. similarly i think willow has just been consistently dyeing that green streak

darius’s cape looks a lot like the golden guard’s. or just the emperor coven’s cape in general. his boots also look like the standard issue EC uniform ones. in fact, his whole outfit looks like a more casual emperor coven uniform. this adds fuel to my theory that he was being mentored by the golden guard to join the emperor’s coven, and when his mentor died, it shattered his trust in the EC which led to him joining the abomination coven instead. (why else would you get one of the top ranking officials of the emperor coven to mentor you, if not to join the coven itself?)

lilith and vee both have cute stylized backpacks and perry has a fanny pack, all of them shaped like demons. vee’s backpack is shaped like her (with a matching hoodie i think?), and because of the visible stitches, i will once again assume hunter made it for her. i will assume hunter did everything sewing-related for the hexsquad. love is stored in the hunter sewing project

in contrast to lilith, perry, and vee, alador’s bag is plain and practical. idk what this says about the characterization of these four but im sure it says something

everyone in the old hexsquad has their own style but alador is in his hexside uniform. again, very practical but he doesn’t seem to care enough about appearance (or hygiene considering he’s covered in abomination goo) to pursue anything beyond practicality

eda’s knee is scraped up. while this and the bandage on her face are probably supposed to indicate that she gets up to trouble a lot id like to think it’s also referencing the pain sharing spell she and lilith did in that scene of them as kids

hunter DEFINITELY did not dress himself those shoes are way too snazzy. darius sees him trying to leave the house in socks and sandals and has an aneurysm

ppl mentioned how willow’s wearing an emerald entrails shirt but also! she has painted nails! i’d like to think amity painted them for her. first amity does her braids and now she paints her nails she is rekindling their friendship one makeover at a time

hunter wears glasses now. i guess after like 8 head injuries, a possession, and two eye color changes he’d have some trouble with his eyesight.

willow has discovered novelty glasses. she seems to be seeing fine so i assume they’re also prescription glasses, which is harder to get in cool shapes. did they get those in the human world or did the boiling isles already have them? or better, after the show they introduce the concept of novelty glasses to the boiling isles. i’d like to think gus gets his dad a pair in that scenario. and eda gets raine a pair

hunter’s jacket has so many references on it to his new family i- 🥺 🥺 🥺 he has a wing patch for flapjack, an abomination with a ponytail for darius, a king patch for king (let them interact in the rest of season 3!!! please!!!), what seems to be the badge eda gives people for leaving their covens, and a flower probably for willow. seemingly no patches for luz, gus, amity, or vee. or the emerald entrails. though he could have more patches on the front of his jacket.

hunter is still rocking that mullet. i know even if they change his hair in a later episode they won’t spoil it in the art here. still even though i know why hunter didn’t want long hair i liked his longer hair + hair skrungly design better than his short hair design

the new hexsquad is dressed in a significantly more human style than the old hexsquad. seeing how luz has a portal key (idk if its real or just a charm), amity retouched her roots, and hunter has a jacket of patches referencing his 86 adopted family members, i would assume this shot of them is post-canon. guess luz takes her friends on another trip to the thrift store

(i know this specific scene where the new and old hexsquad check each other out is impossible temporally within canon what i mean is the hexsquad’s look is most likely something they’ll whip up post canon than during canon)

willows pants have similar flowers on it as the flower patch on hunter’s jacket. the vine design and stitching around the flowers probably mean that they just came with a flower design when willow got it. however i headcanon that willow got hunter a bunch of flower shaped patches and he put one on his jacket. but later willow got a pair of those fashionably ripped jeans and left them somewhere where hunter found it. and when willow gets back hunter has used the rest of his his flower patches to patch up the rips in willows pants and sewed some stitching around the patches to make them look prettier. because he doesn’t understand why someone would wear ripped jeans on purpose. it’s like that one textpost with luz except it’s with willow. she can’t even be mad at him.

Details about Luz's current predicament slowly begin to click into place. This is, very clearly, a past version of Lilith--from her appearance to her attitude, this was the Lilith that Luz knew in the beginning of her time on the Isles.

In addition, there wasn't a single other soul present in this place, other than the two of them. It wasn't like when she'd been inside mindscapes, with trees and shadows of memories. No, there simply wasn't anyone else around at all. If there were, by now, surely they'd have run into other guards, or Kikimora, or... well, literally anybody.

Instead, they were simply within what was almost beginning to feel like an empty box.

Before Luz could speak again, she was suddenly swept up off her feet, hovering in the air in a bubble for, incredibly, the third time in her life. She yelped in surprise, turning back to look at Lilith.

Luz forced her anxiety down--she had a feeling that, for the most part, she was safe from outside factors here. She was, almost certainly, alone with Lilith, who didn't seem aware that this was the case. So... perhaps Luz could jog Lilith into remembering her as her niece?

"You know..." she began, slowly. She tapped at the bubble.

"This is similar to the first time you bubbled me. Remember that? That was a pretty dark time for you, me, 'n Eda."

Lilith's cold expression should be the first sign that she isn't listening. Sure, she hears what the human has to say—but what she gets from it is something else entirely. The nervous demeanour must be guilt from being caught; a hasty attempt to invent a cover story. The kid's up to something. It could be a distraction... or it could be an ill-planned heist.

Story

The CovenKidsAU focuses on Darius and the other Coven Heads in their school days. When Darius and his new friends found a mysterious egg, they decided to take care of it. While researching what this egg is and where it belongs, they will have exciting adventures or face the truth and make difficult decisions.

Episode 1 (Third Wheel)

Introduction to the main character Darius and his goals, problems, family and friends. One of the problems is that his best friend Alador and Odalia start ignoring him and excluding him. Raine wants to find a solution by searching for new friends. They end up taking part in a school play where they soon meet their new friends.

Episode 2 (School Play)

So Darius and Raine participate in the school play, but while Darius keeps complaining about the script, Raine has to fight their stage fright as Eda has become ill and cannot comfort them during the school play. Nonetheless, they have to team up with the two new students Adrian and Hettie. Hettie seems really open to making new friends, but Adrian is very skeptical about the two as he has a passion for acting, he would be very mad if someone screwed up his performance...

Episode 3 (School Trip)

Days later, Darius bumps into Adrian and Hettie again during a school trip. They decide to go for a walk and talk about recent events when they come across a cave that Hettie wants to check out. Even though it's dangerous, they go inside and explore. In the cave, they noticed an egg all alone with no parents nearby. They ignore it and don’t think much about it, but when they found out that this was a Slitherbeast's cave, they just want out as quick as possible. Darius didn't want the egg to get eaten, so he tries to save it, which leads to Adrian and Hettie getting captured by the beast. Meanwhile, Raine and Eda are just talking when Eda mentions a witch who also goes to potions class.

Darius wants to be the best in the abomination class, but that's not so easy when you have a rival in class. His new friends help him train for an upcoming test and become the top student.

Curious as to why Vitimir always speaks badly of himself and never talks about his family they meet Vitimir's sister. As she tells the kids the tragic story of the past, it begins to make sense.

Vitimir wants to spend time with his sister, but his adoptive parents don't even allow him to be near her. Adrian disguises himself as Vitimir so he can enjoy the days with his sister without fearing that his parents are looking for him.

Mason want his parents to see that he’s also good at something like his cousin Harvey but nothing seems to work. His friends suggest to participate in a Flyer Derby tournament. What he doesn't know is that his cousin is also participating and is many steps ahead of him.

Terra tells Adrian about her school days while Osran also tells Vitimir about his school days. It seems that the two stories have a connection.

Hettie is desperate to find a cure for Vitimir’s disease. As they work together, they grow closer and gain trust.
