Reblogging to add a list of links that are relevant to this fic! If you’ve read it, you’ll be able to guess what sort of links these are and decide whether you want to see them or not. If not … under the cut be spoilers.
So the fic makes a lot of references to other fics by members of Casa Brainrot. Here is the list, for posterity. Some of the references constitute spoilers for the fics, so beware.
“Like, say, if you got a gift and I didn’t.“ The Constellations Shift by @sokkas-first-fangirl
“In some of them, I find love.“ There are of course lots of fics where Bruno finds love, and I haven’t read most of them, but the same boy you’ve always known by @madrigaljail, Flickering in the Firelight by @ramblesanddragons and Corazón Espinado by @lasrina were among the stories I was thinking of.
Honourable mention to the fragment of a Bruno version of “Fixer-Upper” from Frozen, written by a friend of @lasrina and posted in the Casa.
“I used to be some kind of insufferable jerkass kid …“ El Brujo Loco of course, from @madrigaljail‘s The Madrigal In-Laws series.
“Your Mamá was so focused on fattening me up …” A common theme, but especially found in viva la pancita de bruno by @waitingonavision and several stories by @empty-cryptid.
The next one is my fic Artificial Shortages. I couldn’t resist.
“I was hiding in a barn …“ A Miracle Is Not Earned but Freely Given by @wildlyironicbee
“We all played toruro and Camilo used his gift to cheat …” I didn’t want my happy, excited Bruno to talk about all the angst in As they learn to see by @cannibalthoughts, so you get a lighter incident from that fic.
“We’re all half human half animal and I have rat kids!“ All good things by @slingerapen, although I cheated a bit because rat kids aren’t yet born in the chapters posted so far.
The Star Wars AU is Lost Stars by @aetherdecember.
The pirate ship AU is Never Shall We Die by archive_rat
“I spent my whole life shut in a tower …” Change The Fates’ Design by @sokkas-first-fangirl. The fic does not have songs, but Tangled does, of course.
“Camilo turned himself into a capybara“ is Straws on the Donkey’s Back by @riathedreamer
“I shrank to the size of a rat overnight“ is Tiny Tío, Big World by @empty-cryptid
“I was about five hundred years old and had a bunch of advanced degrees and a sword!” Take Back The Kingdom by @optimistic-violinist and @impossiblefangirl0632
“I’m a famous actor and I get you to eat a sea urchin” is A Star Is (Re)born by @madrigaljail
Encanto Milk Day (#encanto-milk-day) had to be there, of course! There was no context, just milk.
The pictures of Bruno with cat ears are by @junosaccount and @ro-bun. Here’s a selection.
These are just a selection. There were so many others I could have picked, even restricting myself to Casa members and fics that I could let Bruno talk about without breaking the mood of my story. I am amazed at the massive outpouring of creativity that Encanto has inspired.
Now go and read!
After dinner the fourth night after they lost the miracle, Mirabel sits on a bench outside her family’s temporary home, sketching in the golden evening light. No-one is about except the two black cats that live next door, both lazing on the sunny doorstep.
The street is a comfortable kind of quiet. The schoolhouse opposite is shuttered for the night; a savoury aroma drifts through the still air from the Pezmuertos’ house; and far away, on the edge of her hearing, a lone acordeón player practises a cumbia.
The front door opens. “Ah,” says Tío Bruno, “you’re here. Never mind, I’ll find somewhere else, see you later.”
“No, it’s okay,” Mirabel says, and shuffles along the bench to make room.
A story about a house.

Okay. I need your opinion.
I just made this sketch (not very good) but I need a context.
It could be a style of “Evil Pepa,” or maybe just “The sexy and accommodating wife Pepa.”
I also thought it could be a acting dress, maybe for a Bruno novel or a dance and singing presentation.

Reminders of Encanto - BEWARE OF MAJOR SPOILERS
1. I know I made an announcement prior to Encanto premiere that Alma TOLD Mirabel not to come to Antonio’s gathering. But after seeing the movie, I can happily say that said info was wrong. Alma specifically told Mirabel that she shouldn’t HELP with preparing for Antonio’s ceremony but NEVER she couldn’t wrong. I was wrong and I’m happy that I was.
2. I also remembered seeing the Madrigals take a family picture without Mirabel (as seen in the official trailer). Yes, that was a painful moment of Mirabel. But in context, the family (including Alma) DID NOT tell her to not come. It was just in the heat of the moment. At worst, it was a moment of insensitivity but it’s not something worth demonizing them. They aren’t one-dimensional bad people, they’re complex, well-rounded people who make mistakes. And as I go on in the third point, you’ll see they DO LOVE Mirabel.
3. Yes, I also made a thorough analysis of Mirabel’s isolation from her family. And was right on a few of those except for the Alma thing I mentioned in the previous point. When I watched the movie, I noticed that no one ACTIVELY excluded Mirabel. Were they surprised when she walked with Antonio to his room? Yes. But they were just that: Surprised (sans Isabela who looked annoyed). They were all worried about her when she was still inside the crumbling Casita. They all told her to get out and leave the dwindling candle. And they actively searched for her when she ran away afterwards.  And I DON’T want to hear or see people demonizing her parents. They aren’t perfect but they also supported and validated her as well as defend her from Alma’s harsh treatment. Also, while the family (especially Alma and Pepa) were freaked out when they saw Bruno’s vision of Mirabel, NONE of them made a suggestion like exiling her or kicking her out.
4. I’ve seen a lot people state Alma “got off too quickly with just an apology”. And I’m like, “Seriously? Did you guys watch the same movie as I did?” I am NOT excusing Alma for her actions, especially towards Mirabel, but she’s NOT a flat villain, she’s a complex and nuanced woman. She did was she thought was best for her family at the time. Something she had to do after losing her original home and husband at a young age. She made mistakes. She said and did hurtful things. She also saw the errors of her ways. She SEARCHED for Mirabel. Found her granddaughter and APOLOGIZED for her actions. And while Alma explained her reasons, she also noted how she gradually hurt her family, therefore she doesn’t excuse her actions. Alma GREW. I mean, seriously why do fandoms have to be ridiculous. Why do some of you have to be like, “OMG. An apology won’t fix anything”. Well you know what? It’s a 99 minute movie, not a TV series so they can’t go into that kind of growth. Plus, Alma admitting her mistakes and apologizing is A GOOD THING.
5. Bruno wasn’t kicked out of Casita. He willingly left because he wanted to protect Mirabel from being scapegoated as a child.
6. I have heard there’s some discourse on Pepa’s song about Bruno but here’s the thing: She was made at him for accidentally ruining her wedding but she NEVER said she stopped loving him. And when they plus Julieta finally reunite, it was Pepa who hugged him first (Julieta wasn’t far behind though) and gladly welcomed him back. I DO think we could’ve had a scene were Pepa explains that the ACTUAL reason she doesn’t want to talk about Bruno is because she misses him too much and uses the whole wedding thing to cover it up.
7. Like the above point, Pepa and Bruno’s relationship mirrors Mirabel and Isabela’s. And I some people say Isabela should’ve apologized. And I’ll be honest: I DO think they missed an opportunity for Isabela to reveal that she envies Mirabel for not having to meet such high expectations and is doted on by their parents (they love all their daughters equally it’s just because of a combo of Mirabel being the youngest and Alma being hardest on her). That would’ve been great to see but I think even if she DID apologize, the fandom would have the SAME TIRED REACTION to when Alma actually apologized for the same dumb reason. Also, Mirabel calls out Isabela on her behavior before they reconcile and while I think they missed a chance, I’m still happy.
8. My take on the family not defending Mirabel from Alma’s accusations: I’m happy they went this route. Because it’s Mirabel calling out her grandmother’s behavior, something you wouldn’t see her doing at the beginning. The confrontation was ALL about Alma and Mirabel and the escalating tension between them.

!!Encanto spoilers!! Also long rant ahead
So, let's talk about Bruno (and much of his family while we're at it) As a neurodivergent Hispanic person, I have just been waiting to jump on the opportunity to sink my teeth into the generational trauma that the characters of Encanto face. Not only is it an incredibly important discussion to have as it is arguably one of the biggest conflicts in the movie, but I feel like I should address some things that many non-Columbian/Hispanic/POC viewers might be thinking right about now. So, neurodivergence, it seems pretty evident, right? You've got a character like Bruno who right off the bat, seems to check off every box. He's socially awkward, has a series of strange habits, and lives in the dang walls. However, as someone with neurodivergence, I would disagree, I would also argue that projecting a label like that on a character as a white person, without any context to his personality, would take a whole lot away from the generational trauma aspect of things. One of the most evident things you can see in every single family member is the theme of anxiety. Each individual has a reason or a motive for what they do, which is usually fueled by fear. Bruno lives in the walls and practices superstitious precautions because he doesn't want to hurt people, Isabella pushes perfection in order to meet the standards that everyone expects her, Luisa acts as the sole support beam in fear of being seen as weak. While anxiety is most definitely something that most neurodivergent people face, their fears are not the reason they display the traits they do. So it's pretty obvious that the theme of this movie might imply that the reason for their behaviors is a direct cause of the generational trauma and anxiety that has been passed down. In fact, I think the producers of this movie took the opportunity of many family members to show just how different generational anxiety/trauma can look from person to person. You can see hints of it in every character, from Antonio to Alma. Why am I even bringing this up in the first place? Many other people that also suffer from generational trauma might view this as stating the obvious, well, because I am. One thing that I truly honestly wish that white audiences might understand, is that while some characters might be relatable in their behaviors, their actions have most certainly had a root that a non-Columbian/Hispanic/POC viewer just cannot write off as a learning disability. Obviously, neurodivergent Hispanic, POC, and Columbian people exist, and they have absolutely every right to state their case in saying that these characters are neurodivergent! However when it comes to white people doing the same thing, it can often erase the root of the issue that these characters face, and indirectly just become something again, made for mainly white people to relate to, which was the exact opposite of this movie's purpose. This movie is a love letter to Columbians, I see it as finally an "I see you" for the Columbian/Hispanic/POC viewers similarly affected by the issues the Encanto characters face.

Lyrical Enlightenment: The Family Madrigal (Encanto)
WARNING: ENCANTO SPOILERS WITHIN
As part of my Lyrical Enlightenment series, I've decided to take on the amazing songs from the latest Disney Studios movie, ENCANTO - a story about family and expectations. Heavy with tones of familial responsibilities and health both physical and mental, the songs reflect perfectly and accurately the depth of each character and the troubles of the family. I am including some story context prior to my lyrical analysis, which will contain a plethora of spoilers.
The introductory song is a way for us to not only meet the members of the family and their gifts, but also introduces a very important ingredient of the plot that passes almost unnoticed...
Without further ado, Let's Go!
Mirabel: This is our home, We’ve got every generation So full of music, A rhythm of its own design
This is my family,  A perfect constellation So many stars and everybody gets to shine
This concept will show up later as well - a constellation with many stars who shine. So we'll put a pin on this for later.
Whoa, but let’s be clear Abuela runs this show Whoa, she led us here So many years ago  Whoa, and every year, Our family blessings grow There’s just a lot you’ve simply got to know, so
Here is the first key point for the plot. Abuela runs this show. The matriarchy is set up from the very beginning - Abuela is the leader of the family, and whether they like it or not, what she says goes. She received the original miracle, and was designated as the guardian of the gift. She doesn't have a gift herself, other than ensuring the miracle lives on - and she takes this responsibility very seriously, vigilant about how the family blessings grow.
Welcome to the family Madrigal, The home of the family Madrigal (We’re on our way!)
Where all the people are fantastical and magical I’m part of the family Madrigal
This is where we get to know the family and their powers. She starts with the first generation, Abuela's children: Pepa, Bruno and Julieta.
My Tía Pepa, Her mood affects the weather When she’s unhappy,  Well, the temperature gets weird My Tío Bruno… Citizens: We don’t talk about Bruno!
Mirabel: They say he saw the future, One day, he disappeared (Oh!)
This is the first time we hear about Bruno, the family member nobody talks about (presumably by Abuela's orders, since she runs the show). Although I'm not Colombian, I do come from a Latin American background - and I can say with confidence that there's someone in every family that 'we don't talk about'. Most times it's someone who crossed the family in some way, represented a danger, or brought shame to the 'good name' of the family.
And that’s my mom Julieta, here’s her deal (Whoa!) The truth is, she can heal you with a meal (Whoa!) Her recipes are remedies for real If you’re impressed, imagine how I feel – Mom!
Here the relationship between Mirabel and her mother is clearly established. Seemingly, Mirabel has Julieta's attention more than any other members of her family.
Next, we get introduced to the men who married the sisters - men without 'miracle gifts' but provided the family with the ability to grow.
Welcome to the family Madrigal The home of the family Madrigal I know it sounds a bit fantastical and magical But I’m part of the Family Madrigal
Two guys fell in love with Family Madrigal And now they’re part of the Family Madrigal
So yeah, Tío Félix married Pepa, And my dad married Julieta That’s how Abuela became an Abuela Madrigal (Let’s go, let’s go)
And now, we hear from Abuela herself:
Abuela: We swear to always Help those around us And earn the miracle, That somehow found us
The town keeps growing, The world keeps turning, But work and dedication will keep the miracle burning And each new generation must keep the miracle burning
This is the specific segment I was talking about. These few lines give us exactly what Abuela's focus is. We SWEAR to always HELP all around us - to EARN the miracle. She is paying a debt she feels she has with those in the village because she was selected to receive this miracle gift. And how will she do it? With WORK and DEDICATION - and EACH NEW GENERATION must continue her legacy. Hence when the couples have children, the next generation now continues the legacy of preserving the magical miracle they were given. If you think about it, this is no different than a Doctor, a Lawyer, or a Military individual who have children so they can be Doctors, Lawyers, or join the Military to continue 'their legacy', regardless of what the child wants. This is a very traditional point of view that persists in some families even in these modern times, and is very much seen as a source of pride. In more than a few instances during this movie, we hear Abuela use the 'make your family proud' sentence, inculcating in the children of her household the expectation of making their family proud specifically by using the gifts they are given to help the community and continue to EARN the miracle.
Next, we get introduced to the 'cousins' - the children of Pepa and Julieta. There are three children for each of them.
Cousin Dolores can hear a pin drop Camilo shapeshifts, Antonio gets his gift today My older sisters – Isabela and Luisa One strong, one graceful Perfect in every way
Chorus: Isabela… Mirabel: …grows a flower, the town goes wild Chorus: Isabela… Mirabel: She’s a perfect golden child Chorus: Luisa, Luisa, Luisa, Luisa Mirabel: And Luisa’s super strong The beauty and the brawn do no wrong
In my view, Dolores represents that member of the family that is always paying attention to her surroundings and knows everything about everyone - yet on the same token, she's the one that is very tempted to share any secrets that fall onto her lap. She has a lot of information, and knows how to use it. Camilo represents that family member who is always trying to make friends with everyone. He's the clown, the prankster, and the social butterfly. He can be irritating and sarcastic sometimes, but he is so endearing that people tend to overlook those nasty traits because of his good side. And Antonio - as we find out later, is the animal lover in the bunch.
Isabela, as Julieta's eldest (and I'm willing to bet slightly older than Dolores), must be the perfect daughter, and the one who has to marry well to continue growing the family (which is also a traditional expectation in most Hispanic cultures). She is beautiful, graceful, polite, amiable, and the perfect hostess. Her marriage is the most important of the entire family, hence why eventually we learn about her Abuela-encouraged engagement to one of the best males in the village in Abuela's perspective.
That’s life in the Family Madrigal (Whoa…) Now you know the Family Madrigal (Whoa…) Where all the people are fantastical and magical (Whoa…) That’s who we are in the Family Madrigal (Adios!)
At this stage we proceed to learn that Mirabel is the only Madrigal without a gift. She is embarrassed and ashamed about this, feelings that mostly come from Abuela pushing her aside because, by not having a miracle-given gift, she is endangering the rest of the family. This message goes directly in contradiction to the 'make your family proud' that she was fed prior to realizing she wouldn't get a gift - but once she didn't, the treatment clearly changed. She tries to put a strong façade, but as we learn later, she is tired of feeling like a second class citizen in her own family.
Child: Whoa, what’s your gift? Mirabel: Ha! Well, I gotta go, the life of the Madrigal (Whoa…) But know you all know the Family Madrigal (Whoa…) I never meant this to get autobiographical (Whoa…) So just to review Family Madrigal Let’s go! (Mira-Mirabel)
It starts with Abuela, and then Tía Pepa – she handles the weather (Mira-Mirabel) My mom, Julieta, can make you feel better, with just one arepa (Mira-Mirabel) My dad Agustín – Well, he’s accident-prone but he means well (Mira-Mirabel) Hey, you said you wanna know what everyone does – I’ve got sisters and cousins and… (Mirabel)
One good detail to point out here is that Agustin is accident-prone, so his perfect match is with Julieta, who heals results of accidents with her cooking. Also, Pepa changes the weather with her temperament, and marries Felix - who is a very chill guy and balances her.
My primo, Camilo won’t stop until he makes you smile today (Mirabel) My Cousin Dolores can hear this whole chorus a mile away (Mirabel) Look, it’s Mr. Mariano, hey you can marry my sister if you wanna but between (Mirabel) …you and me she’s kind of a prima donna Yo, I’ve said too much and thank you but I really gotta go
My family’s amazing (Mirabel) And I’m in my family, so (Mirabel) Well…
Abuela: Mirabel!
Next installment will cover Mirabel's song, Waiting on a Miracle.

Another aspect to the Bruno abandoning thing, I don’t think anybody’s talked about this kind of headcanon, but what if Alberto’s dad was just…not mentally okay? Not giving it an excuse but hear me out. Most of the fandom if not all have decreed that he abandoned Alberto and said he’s “old enough to fend for himself” as hostile and more of Alberto being a burden in his eyes, but, maybe also from growing up with a mentally ill parent, maybe Alberto’s dad had swings of bad health and would disappear, because he couldn’t handle things himself and thought it would be better to leave Beto alone, though eventually coming back, before he thought Alberto would’ve been big enough to handle it. My mom use to be kinda the same way, coming back and forth because she thought it’d be better for her to disappear during her bad spills because she thought it was better than me dealing with her illness, which is a double sword in of itself. His comment of changing his mind, maybe he tried to leave before or use to threaten to leave but his mind would change coz of him being so young. Emotional abuse (as that’s probably as far as we’re keeping it in how Alberto and Bruno’s relationship was) is a double edged sword, especially depending on its context and contents.
I think, outside of it just being a personal headcanon (lmao sorry), it’s just, a different way to look at it. Sure there’s parents who just abandon their kids as soon as possible, but idk, thoughts? I’m also sorry if it’s too personal in relation I just, figured it’d be a interesting talking point to it yaknow?
I love hearing personal head cannons! Thank you so much for sharing it!
I think a lot of the fandom interpretations of Bruno (Alberto's dad) do end up being a little flat and one sided, sort of just seeing him as this evil guy who does nothing outside of abandon Alberto. And I honestly think that's a fair reading because that's what we get from the movie. The only person who tells us anything about Bruno is Alberto, when he's in a really low emotional state. (He outs himself, Giulia rejects him, and Luca betrays him. Clearly it stirs up other shit that he's been repressing, most notably being abandoned.) So what we get of Bruno is this really flat, one dimensional picture from the incredibly upset (and slightly unreliable) narrator of Alberto. This, uh, is not very related to your ask, but I felt the need to mention it.
Anyway, moving into hc's and building Bruno into more of a fleshed out character-- I think something like this makes a lot of sense. I recently watched Encanto (like everyone else it seems, but spoilers ahead for those who haven't seen it yet), and one of the discussions I've been seeing about it re:generational trauma is the way that the trauma gets passed down through generations. Like, you Alma, who has lost her home and husband and becomes a single mother, use the gift of the miracle to build and protect her home and community above anything else. Then we see Julieta (Mirabel's mom) continue that same idea in a different form-- where she prioritizes the community's health over herself, putting a lot of time and labor into healing others. Then you see similar pattern in Luisa and Isabela, who both prioritize other's needs above their own. Anyway, this is a long winded way of saying that I agree with you. The way that our parents think about themselves (especially the negative ways), can easily become of the negative ways their children think about themselves.
So Alberto's thoughts of "other people would be better off without me" may likely of come from his father believing that about himself as well. That, for whatever reason, Alberto would be better off without him there. (And your headcannon of maybe that being influenced by a mental illness could work really well, as could just a general feeling of uselessness or something that happened to Bruno in his life.) Obviously the idea of "other people are better off without me" is always incorrect, and it certainly doesn't justify Bruno leaving. But it does give this sort of sympathetic side to his character that rounds him out a bit!
