Why Hospitality Workers in Surrey and London Need Enhanced DBS Checks
Tumblr media
Never before has it been so crucial for your people to be professional and trustworthy, especially when they are working in sensitive environments like private homes, schools, care homes, hospitals, or exclusive locations in the luxury hospitality sector. This is why Enhanced DBS checks have become a necessity for a number of hospitality positions throughout the UK.
Whether you’re recruiting staff for hospitality jobs in Surrey or you’re trying to find a trustworthy new addition to your team in London, it is not only good practice for your team members to have current and checked qualifications, but it’s essential. At Operations Chef Consultant, your peace of mind is of extreme importance, and therefore, all our chefs are fully vetted and come with Enhanced DBS checks as required.
What is an Enhanced DBS Check?
What is an Enhanced DBS Check? An Enhanced DBS Check is the most in-depth level of criminal record check available in the UK. It discloses not only spent and unspent convictions, formal cautions, reprimands, and warnings, but also any other information held by the local police that is reasonably considered relevant to the role that has been applied for.
Such a level of protection is especially relevant for hospitality workers who could be working with children, vulnerable people, or working in people's houses where discretion, safety, and professionalism are non-negotiable attributes.
Why It Matters in Hospitality
But for businesses and individuals in Surrey, employing hospitality staff, an Enhanced DBS Check is a source of reassurance. Whether being a private chef in a family home, a catering assistant in a school kitchen, or waiting staff in a care home, the client needs to know that those they are welcoming to their space are vetted to the highest standards for the job they will be performing.
Here at Operational Chef Consultant, we value hospitality as not just service but integrity, discretion , and responsibility. That’s why we do everything we can to make sure our candidates are highly skilled and also rigorously background-checked if the role calls for it.

As providers of hospitality staff through partners Chef Site alongside other companies for operational chefs, Operational Chef Consultant, can also provide you with custom-made staffing solutions in London and Surrey. Whether it's a private diner or a long-term position in a staffed home, our clients trust us to exceed their expectations of capability and safety.
We process DBS applications on behalf of our Clients as well as Candidates. This means no more lengthy, paper process, no administration work, and a quick and efficient route to compliance.
Hire With Confidence
Whether you are looking for event temporary support or possibly more permanent hospitality staff in Surrey, it’s important to ensure that you are hiring professionals with the right checks. At Operative Chef Consultant, we promise you professional working standards -- and we follow that with the right vetting process.
Check out our recruitment services or make an enquiry about staffing with Enhanced DBS certification. Hire with confidence. Serve with pride.

hi! I might have the wrong person in mind, but you do a lot of modding for your 3DS correct? I believe you posted a guide/links to how to mod your 3DS and find and download games directly to it?
I unearthed mine recently and was very happy to find a lot of my old DS and 3DS games with it, but sad to be missing some of my favorites. and given that me and my siblings all played video games and are all now adults who have moved around a bunch AND my parents have moved at least twice in the last five years, I know most of our games have probably been lost to yard sales and random boxes/drawers/storage/etc.
anyway I want to try to mod mine and try to find some of those games to play again. (especially some of the puzzle games so I can play on the bus to/from work and not have to be assaulted by ads every time I finish a level like on a mobile game)
if this is you, if you have a link to your other post(s) I thank you in advance!! if it is not you, no worries I will continue my investigation. either way thanks and I hope you have a very nice day!
hey friend!!! i'm not an expert on it myself, i just know where to look for guides and resources ;3 so here's some useful links!
here's the complete guide for modding your 3ds, PLEASE remember to read everything carefully and follow the exact instructions provided for your version of the system! you WILL need another device with an SD card reader to get started (also just for maintenance in the future!!!)
hshop is the best place to find 3ds games and other downloadable content once you're set up! this site also has a compatible homebrew app.
universal-DB is the main store for custom homebrew apps! you can find some games, but it's mostly quality-of-life scripts, mods and software for enhancing your overall experience. the compatible app, universal-updater, should be included as part of the set-up guide.
themeplaza is a hub for sharing custom 3ds homepage themes! these are usually made with programs like usagi 3ds theme maker or kame editor. i prefer the first one!
if you miss online social features, please consider checking out pretendo! it's a project in active development working to revive the 3ds' online space, including miiverse! i'm a beta tester and it's really cool what they've achieved so far!!
good luck, it's really worth it!!! ( ꈍᴗꈍ)

Can I ask DB!Tony for both AU and non-AU, but pre-Cure, would handle their respective Peters getting sick? Are we talking huge overreaction? Calling in all experts for a cough? Further secluding them away from all, doctors included? What if it’s something more serious (as stress does weaken the immune system), like pneumonia or something else? I forget if you mentioned whether SIM will or plan to infect Peter with Extremis and if this will affect that timing of his plan.
[🐻ursa interlude🐻
DB!SIM: wouldn't particularly overreact to mild illness! He is paranoid, but more so about the idea of Peter being hurt. Like, he's rich, so he would call in a doctor a little sooner than the average joe might just for reassurance instead of taking the "eh it'll probably go away on its own" approach, but he would also be content with "drink lots of fluids and sleep it off" as instructions from said doctor instead of demanding a miracle cure or whatever.
(But he'd get less reasonable real quick if it was something more severe-- god forbid Peter ever need his appendix out or something, because that surgeon would have to deal with Tony breathing down their neck in the surgical suite and demanding hourly incision checks, lmao.)
He was originally planning on dosing Peter with Extremis, but that plan changed when he learned that Peter was already enhanced from his spider bite! "Enhanced enough to be relatively protected from most injury or illness, but not quite as powerful as me" was kind of his ideal outcome anyway.
Kidnapping!SIM: looooooooooooooooooooooool
JARVIS would be able to keep him at least somewhat tethered to reality? He would definitely bring in a doctor for like, anything more than a headache, and he would insist on testing for at least the most common things associated with Peter's symptoms even if they were quite mild (flu/strep/RSV/etc. for a cough for example,) but as long as JARVIS backed up that all the tests were negative and Peter really did likely just need some rest he would reluctantly accept that… most of the time.
(Without JARVIS around, or on his very least hinged days, it is entirely possible that he would work himself up into a paranoid frenzy about how Peter's headache, malaise and sniffles meant that he had definitely been poisoned and SIM clearly needed to have all of the food in the kitchen tested and everyone who may have come into contact with it interrogated/fired/executed.)
And then on his less-hinged-but-not-that-unhinged days, Peter's going to get ALL the cultures and ALL the bloodwork done regardless of how mild his symptoms are, and SIM also probably just routinely gets all kinds of labs done on Peter's blood as a "just in case" measure.
He also has any prescribed medicines/injections/etc. tested by JARVIS prior to letting them be given to Peter as a general rule, and god forbid this Peter ever need a surgery because even once he got past the "voluntarily allowing someone to cut into his son and trusting that it's not a veiled assassination attempt" of it all, he would be so incredibly unreasonable about the recovery. Look at his SON he's GRIMACING he needs MORPHINE.
But despite all of that! He also is not planning on giving Peter Extremis. Somewhere even in the depth of his delusion, he realizes that would be giving Peter too powerful of a tool for rebelling against his situation. He remembers that his actual son was enhanced, and that his actual son used that to fight against his plans.
(Bbbbut if it ever occurred to him, he might try to synthesize a compound that would give P!Peter a similar level of healing factor without also making him more physically powerful. Poor baby lab rat Peter.)]

What Manufacturers Need to Know About Music and Sound Toys Testing?
Music and sound toys have gained immense popularity in recent years due to their ability to engage, entertain, and educate children. From musical keyboards and interactive books to singing dolls and talking robots, these toys help enhance auditory development, motor coordination, and creativity. However, with the integration of electronics and audio features, the safety and functionality of these toys become increasingly complex. That’s where music and sound toys testing becomes essential.
For manufacturers aiming to launch successful products in global markets, understanding the nuances of music and sound toys testing is critical. This guide outlines everything manufacturers need to know—from compliance standards and testing procedures to common challenges and best practices.
Why Music and Sound Toys Require Specialized Testing
Unlike traditional toys, music and sound toys include electronic circuits, speakers, batteries, and software elements. These additional components introduce risks such as:
Excessive sound levels that could damage a child’s hearing
Electrical hazards from faulty wiring or batteries
Mechanical failures due to repeated use or drops
Material safety issues, including toxic substances
Testing ensures these toys are safe, durable, and compliant with international regulations, making it a non-negotiable part of the production process.
Key Standards Governing Music and Sound Toys Testing
Manufacturers must comply with relevant toy safety regulations, depending on their target market. The following are the most important standards for music and sound toys:
1. ASTM F963 (United States)
Regulates sound pressure levels
Requires secure battery compartments
Includes mechanical and flammability requirements
2. EN 71-1, EN 71-2, and EN 71-3 (Europe)
Covers physical and mechanical properties
Regulates flammability and chemical content
Includes noise level testing
3. ISO 8124 (International)
Offers a global framework for toy safety
Used widely in Asia-Pacific and developing markets
4. IEC 62115 (Electrical Safety Standard)
Applies to electric toys and toys with sound-producing features
Tests insulation, overheating, and short-circuit risks
Failure to comply with these standards can lead to market entry bans, product recalls, and serious reputational damage.
What Testing Labs Evaluate in Music and Sound Toys
When a manufacturer submits a toy for testing, accredited laboratories conduct several evaluations to ensure comprehensive safety and performance. Here's what they test:
1. Sound Pressure Levels
Ensures toys emit sounds below safe thresholds (typically ≤ 85 dB)
Evaluates impulsive and continuous sounds
Simulates real-life usage (e.g., toy near the ear)
2. Mechanical and Physical Safety
Drop, torque, tension, and impact tests
Evaluates whether toys break into hazardous parts
Ensures no sharp edges or detachable small parts
3. Battery and Electrical Safety
Checks battery compartments for child resistance
Assesses risks like leakage, overheating, or short circuits
Evaluates wiring insulation and component quality
4. Flammability
Tests how materials burn or self-extinguish
Ensures toys do not ignite easily
5. Chemical Safety
Evaluates paints, coatings, and plastics for toxic substances
Checks for phthalates, lead, and other restricted chemicals
6. Durability and Reliability
Long-term use simulations (e.g., 1,000 button presses)
Ensures product functions remain stable over time
Pre-Testing Checklist for Manufacturers
Before sending products for official testing, manufacturers should consider the following checklist to increase the chance of a successful outcome:
Design with Compliance in Mind Use child-safe materials, sound-limiting features, and secure battery compartments from the start.
Know Your Market Requirements Regulatory standards vary by region. Understand what applies in the U.S., EU, Middle East, or Asia.
Use Certified Components Batteries, circuits, and materials should come from verified suppliers with safety documentation.
Document All Processes Keep detailed technical files, user manuals, and design drawings to support compliance audits.
Partner with Accredited Testing Labs Choose ISO 17025-certified labs with experience in music and sound toys testing to ensure accuracy and reliability.
Common Testing Challenges and How to Overcome Them
1. Sound Level Failures
Toys often exceed decibel limits, especially when placed near the ear. To avoid this:
Include sound-limiting circuits
Add multiple volume settings with default low volume
Perform pre-compliance testing
2. Battery Compartment Issues
Loose or easily accessible compartments can be dangerous. Solutions include:
Using screw-secured covers
Avoiding button cell batteries for young children
Incorporating locking mechanisms
3. Durability Concerns
Toys may break during mechanical tests. Manufacturers should:
Reinforce joints and high-impact areas
Use high-quality plastic and electronic components
Test prototypes under rough conditions before production
Benefits of Proper Music and Sound Toys Testing
Investing in thorough testing brings long-term advantages:
Market Access: Complying with standards unlocks entry into global markets.
Reduced Liability: Lower chances of recalls or lawsuits.
Customer Trust: Safe toys build lasting brand reputation.
Better Product Development: Feedback from testing labs can improve future designs.
Retail Approval: Major retailers often require third-party testing reports for shelf space.
Timeline and Cost of Testing
Testing time varies based on the toy's complexity. On average:
Simple toys: 7–10 business days
Complex or multifunctional toys: 15–20 business days
Cost depends on:
Number of standards tested
Test complexity (e.g., electronic vs. non-electronic)
Revisions needed after failures
Manufacturers should budget for testing as part of their product development lifecycle.
Best Practices for Manufacturers
Engage testing labs early in the design phase for input
Create prototypes for pre-compliance testing
Iterate based on test feedback to improve safety and performance
Stay updated on changes to toy safety standards
Educate your team about compliance to avoid costly design errors
Conclusion
Music and sound toys bring joy, learning, and stimulation to children worldwide. However, with added complexity comes increased responsibility. For manufacturers, understanding the importance of music and sound toys testing is vital to producing safe, compliant, and high-quality products.
By aligning with international safety standards like ASTM F963, EN 71, ISO 8124, and IEC 62115, and partnering with accredited testing laboratories, manufacturers can confidently enter global markets and build products that parents trust and children love.

MOT testers ensure cars meet roadworthiness standards, contributing to safer roads. This guide provides a clear, step-by-step path to becoming an MOT tester, including eligibility, training, and using an MOT test checklist. With options like an MOT test course in Northampton, you can achieve your goal efficiently. Follow these steps to kickstart your journey.
Tumblr media
Step 1: Check Eligibility for MOT Tester Training
Before enrolling in an MOT test course in Northampton, confirm you meet the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) requirements. These ensure you have the skills and background to become a qualified MOT tester.
Eligibility Criteria:
Hold a full, current UK driving licence for the vehicle classes you’ll test (e.g., Category B for cars).
Have at least four years of full-time experience servicing and repairing vehicles in your chosen classes.
Possess no unspent criminal convictions related to the motor trade, violence, or intimidation.
Be of “good repute,” as determined by the DVSA through a basic DBS check.
For Class 3 or 5 vehicles, you need a Level 2 testing certificate for Class 4 and 7 vehicles and a prior MOT demonstration test.
Step 2: Earn a Relevant Qualification

Pre-test inspections and MOT test checklist procedures.
Professional development and working relationships.
Conducting MOT tests per DVSA standards.
You must pass a multiple-choice exam and a practical assessment to earn a Level 2 MOT Testing Award.
Step 4: Pass the DVSA MOT Demonstration Test
After completing the MOT test course in Northampton, book a DVSA MOT demonstration test. This practical exam assesses your ability to perform an MOT test unassisted, following the MOT test checklist.
Preparation Tips:
Study the MOT testing manuals and special notices on GOV.UK.
Practice inspection routines with various vehicles.
Observe experienced MOT testers to refine your technique.
Ensure you bring your driving licence, Level 2 certificate, and a vehicle over three years old for the test.
Book the test via the MOT testing service using your course-created account.
Step 5: Start Testing and Maintain Certification
Once you pass the demonstration test, you can work as an MOT tester at an authorised testing station. To maintain your status, complete annual training and assessments (3 hours yearly, 16 hours over five years).
Annual Requirements:
Take a 30-question online assessment (80% pass rate).
Keep a training record, either paper or electronic.
Stay updated with MOT testing manuals and special notices.
Failure to complete these suspends your testing privileges, requiring a retest.
Step 6: Find Work and Grow Your Career
Search for MOT tester roles at garages or testing centres via job boards like Indeed or industry-specific platforms. Courses like those in Northampton, offered by MOT Expert, enhance your employability.
Career Tips:

A Guide to Selecting Low-Noise Axial Flow Fans
In modern life, noise pollution has become one of the important factors affecting the quality of life. Especially in places that require a quiet environment, such as offices, libraries or home bedrooms, a low-noise axial flow fan is particularly important. So, how to choose a low-noise axial flow fan that suits you?
Determine the usage scenarios and requirements Before purchasing a low-noise axial flow fan, it is crucial to clarify its purpose. Different application scenarios have different performance requirements for fans. For example, the office may pay more attention to products with moderate air volume and low noise; The bedroom, on the other hand, requires a device that can provide good ventilation without disturbing rest. Therefore, when making a purchase, the size, power and functional configuration of the fan should be determined based on specific needs.
Pay attention to the noise level and certification standards As the core selling point of low-noise axial flow fans, "low noise" is the part that consumers care about the most. Under normal circumstances, manufacturers will indicate the decibel value (dB) in the product description. It is generally recommended to choose products with a decibel value lower than 30dB to ensure a quiet effect. In addition, checking whether the product has passed relevant international or domestic noise control certifications (such as CE, ISO, etc.) can further confirm the reliability of the product.
Consider the energy efficiency ratio and energy conservation and environmental protection characteristics With the enhancement of environmental awareness, more and more users are beginning to pay attention to the energy efficiency of products. When making a purchase, you can give priority to those models with a high energy efficiency ratio (COP value) and pay attention to whether they have energy-saving labels. Meanwhile, some advanced low-noise axial flow fans also adopt an adjustable speed design, which can not only meet basic requirements but also effectively reduce energy consumption.
Considerations of installation convenience and maintenance ease Last but not least, the convenience of installation and the subsequent maintenance costs are also factors that cannot be ignored. For ordinary families, it would be more practical to choose those models that come with built-in brackets for easy fixation and installation and are easy to clean and maintain. In addition, some high-end brands also offer remote control functions, which greatly enhance the flexibility and convenience of use.
Only by rationally planning the budget and comprehensively comparing the parameter indicators can one select the most suitable low-noise axial flow fan for their own conditions.

Why UK Healthcare Employers Rely on Recruitment Agencies to Source Top Talent
The Growing Demand for Skilled Healthcare Professionals in the UK
The UK healthcare sector continues to experience a dramatic surge in demand for qualified professionals across various specialties. With an aging population, increasing chronic conditions, and an ever-evolving healthcare landscape, NHS trusts, private hospitals, care homes, and clinics are under constant pressure to maintain staffing levels. Yet, the competition for top-tier healthcare talent is fierce, leaving many employers unable to attract or retain the right professionals using traditional recruitment methods.
The Strategic Role of Healthcare Recruitment Agencies
Healthcare recruitment agencies serve as crucial partners in bridging the widening gap between healthcare providers and job-seeking professionals. These agencies specialize in sourcing, screening, and placing high-caliber candidates efficiently, enabling healthcare organizations to focus on care delivery while ensuring operational efficiency.
By leveraging specialized networks, robust candidate databases, and industry expertise, agencies streamline the recruitment process, reduce hiring timelines, and ensure that only credentialed and experienced candidates reach the final interview stage.
Access to a Wider Talent Pool
One of the greatest advantages of working with healthcare recruitment agencies is access to a diverse and extensive candidate pool. Agencies maintain vast databases of pre-vetted professionals, including doctors, nurses, allied health practitioners, care assistants, and administrative staff. Many of these candidates are passive job seekers—individuals who are not actively applying for roles but are open to better opportunities, which direct hiring methods often miss.
Furthermore, recruitment agencies often have international reach, allowing them to source qualified overseas healthcare workers, a critical advantage given the UK’s reliance on international talent, especially in roles experiencing acute shortages.
Speed and Efficiency in Hiring
The healthcare sector can’t afford to leave essential positions vacant for extended periods. Recruitment agencies are structured to fill roles faster through:
Automated candidate tracking systems
Established vetting processes
Experienced recruitment consultants
Immediate availability of locum or temporary staff
This speed is especially valuable when dealing with urgent care needs, seasonal staffing spikes, or unexpected absenteeism.
Compliance and Credential Verification
Navigating the complex landscape of healthcare compliance in the UK can be challenging. Recruitment agencies help employers stay fully compliant with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), NHS Employers guidelines, and immigration and work permit regulations.
They handle critical tasks such as:
Enhanced DBS checks
Occupational health screenings
GMC, NMC, and HCPC registration verifications
Visa and sponsorship support for international recruits
By outsourcing these regulatory requirements, healthcare organizations reduce risk, save time, and maintain a legally sound hiring process.
Tailored Recruitment for Specialized Roles
Many healthcare vacancies require niche expertise—such as neonatal nurses, radiographers, speech and language therapists, or clinical psychologists—that general recruitment channels struggle to source.
Healthcare recruitment agencies often employ consultants with medical backgrounds or dedicated specialists for various healthcare sectors. This specialization ensures that employers receive candidates with the right qualifications, cultural fit, and sector-specific experience.
Support for Temporary, Locum, and Permanent Placements
Agencies offer flexibility by providing staffing solutions for every type of contract, including:
Temporary and short-term contracts
Locum tenens positions
Fixed-term and permanent placements
Project-based staffing
This flexibility is vital for covering maternity leaves, long-term sickness, or peak demand periods. Many agencies also offer 24/7 availability, allowing healthcare providers to request emergency cover without disruption to patient care.
Cost-Effective Recruitment Solutions
While some employers view recruitment agencies as an added expense, many realize they’re a cost-saving investment. Recruitment agencies help organizations avoid the hidden costs of a bad hire, reduce advertising expenses, and eliminate resource-draining interview processes.
They also improve staff retention rates by matching candidates more precisely, reducing the frequency of rehiring. Agencies often offer guaranteed placements, where replacements are provided at no additional cost if a candidate leaves within a probation period.
Technology-Driven Recruitment Solutions
Top-tier healthcare recruitment agencies utilize cutting-edge recruitment technologies to drive smarter, faster hiring decisions. These include:
AI-based candidate matching systems
Predictive analytics for retention likelihood
Digital compliance management
Real-time interview scheduling platforms
These tools allow for data-driven hiring, enabling healthcare employers to make informed decisions based on more than just a CV.
Mitigating the Impact of Workforce Shortages
The UK healthcare system faces persistent workforce shortages, particularly in nursing and allied health roles. The 2023 NHS Long Term Workforce Plan highlights the need to recruit and train thousands of additional professionals over the next decade.
Recruitment agencies are already playing a vital role in this transformation, offering scalable workforce solutions and helping employers plan for both current and future staffing needs. Whether it’s mass hiring for new facilities or sourcing rare specialists, agencies provide the agility and scale that internal teams often lack.
Enhancing Employer Branding
A recruitment agency doesn't just fill roles—it helps enhance the employer’s brand in a competitive hiring market. Agencies work closely with organizations to understand their culture, values, and mission, and then convey that effectively to prospective candidates.
They act as brand ambassadors, ensuring that job seekers perceive the healthcare employer as an attractive, ethical, and growth-focused workplace, which directly impacts the quality and quantity of applicants.
Conclusion: A Strategic Partnership for Talent Acquisition
In a sector where lives are at stake, having the right people in the right positions is non-negotiable. UK healthcare employers rely on recruitment agencies not out of convenience, but out of strategic necessity. These agencies offer unmatched expertise, speed, compliance assurance, and access to specialized talent pools that internal HR teams simply cannot replicate at scale.
Partnering with a reputable healthcare recruitment agency is no longer just an option—it’s a competitive advantage that ensures continuity of care, improves patient outcomes, and supports sustainable growth for healthcare providers across the UK.

Parkinson Clinical Trials
Parkinson Participants are essential to advancing research on the causes, treatment and cure of Parkinson’s disease. Learn more about how you can participate in a clinical trial.
Research participants enrolled in community-based PD group exercise classes report benefits such as social connections, fellowship and a sense of hope and improved outlook. However, many individuals face barriers that prevent them from joining these programs.
Symptoms
People with PD experience both motor and non-motor symptoms. Non-motor (non-movement) symptoms include thinking problems, depression and fatigue. Bladder and bowel issues like constipation, incontinence and excessive sweating may also occur.
Typical early motor symptoms of PD are subtle rest tremors and changes in handwriting. People may find that they are writing smaller or that their pens seem to be getting more cramped. Others notice that their facial expressions are becoming less expressive or that one arm swings less on the side while walking.
Non-motor PD symptoms can come and go, so it is important to tell your doctor about any symptoms that disrupt your daily life. Often, these symptoms are relieved by the right medications. But sometimes, they reappear when you change your medications or have a "wearing off" period. Medications may improve your movement symptoms but they can have other side effects, such as a sudden change in your mood or hallucinations. So, it's always best to follow your doctor's recommendations for medication and therapy.
Diagnosis
The first step in diagnosis is a thorough medical history and physical examination. Your doctor will ask about your symptoms, such as tremor, stiffness and difficulty moving. He or she will also check your blood pressure and take a urine sample. Your doctor will also ask about your family history of Parkinson's disease and whether you have taken any drugs that affect movement (Parkinson's medications).
Other tests include a DaT scan, which shows the brain using an imaging technique with a radioactive tracer. The tracer binds to proteins that transport dopamine in the brain. If these proteins are abnormal, a diagnosis of PD is likely. MRI and other brain imaging can help rule out other disorders with similar symptoms, such as Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis or other neurological conditions.
A new test can detect misfolded alpha-synuclein protein in cerebrospinal fluid, the liquid that surrounds your spinal cord and brain. However, this test requires a spinal tap (lumbar puncture) and is not widely available.
Treatment
Today, doctors use a variety of medications to control PD symptoms. They tailor the right medication, dosage and combination to each person. They also consider the side effects of medication (e.g., drooling, sleep problems).
In some cases, doctors may perform a spinal tap to get a sample of cerebrospinal fluid for testing. This test looks for misfolded alpha-synuclein proteins that can increase a person's risk of Parkinson's disease.
Other treatments for PD include physical therapy, a well-balanced diet, and staying active. Research shows that exercise reduces PD symptoms and may help slow the progression of the disease.
Some people with PD benefit from surgical treatment called deep brain stimulation, or DBS. This surgery involves putting electrodes in the critical areas of the brain that control movement. These electrodes are connected to a generator that is implanted in the chest wall, like a pacemaker. The electrical pulses interrupt abnormal circuitry in the brain to decrease tremors, dyskinesia and other PD symptoms.
Research
As the Parkinson's field of research evolves, exciting breakthroughs and advancements are in sight. These new therapies are designed to alleviate symptoms, enhance mobility and enable people with Parkinson's disease to live full lives.
The human genome project and other efforts have helped create the infrastructure for PD genetics studies, which are now underway in a large consortium called the Parkinson's Genome Wide Association Study (PD-GWAS). The NINDS also supports an open-access repository of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from people with gene mutations associated with PD.
Researchers are using iPSCs to explore the biology of PD and to test potential drug treatments in the laboratory. One promising avenue is to use iPSCs to regenerate dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. This would replace the loss of these neurons as the PD progresses, potentially slowing or even halting disease progression. Other trials are testing the ability to "repurpose" drugs approved for other conditions -- such as high blood pressure, depression or diabetes -- for PD treatment.
