#esp with the characters and their dynamics with each other

as much as twilight is like Fucked Up. and most of the characters (esp bella) just have like a terrible horrible time because of The Horrors I do think it’s really nice to focus on the family dynamics sometimes.

Both the wolf pack and the cullens have their own flaws and issues and complicated dynamics but both groups at their core really care about the people they call family. I think if they weren’t experiencing the aforementioned horrors you’d be able to see it a lot more.

One of the things i really really loved about midnight sun was getting a little bit of an extra peak into the Cullen House esp BBS (Before Bella Swan) seeing how edward views his family and just how close he actually is with them i love it a lot. He really genuinely sees Esme and Carlisle as his mother and father and they see him as their son. The way esme cares for everyone especially edward just makes me so happy i think it’s so so sweet, she can’t help but want her first son from her second life to be happy, loved and cared for, she loves bella so instantly she loves how happy she makes edward and thinks she’s such a wonderfully kind girl and i just think it’s so sweet. Carlisle is his dad and best friend and he looks up to him so much AND ALICE.

ohhh Alice and Edward make me soooooo happy. From the moment Alice wakes up she begins to see Jasper and the cullens and grows to love all of them. She falls in love with Jasper and Loves the cullens as her family, she loves Edward as her brother from so early on and when they finally FINALLY meet he gets to see all she’s seen, knows what she thinks and he instantly loves her too. She spends 30 years waiting for her family and while they all do accept her quite fast edward truely accepts her and instantly loves her as a sister and 🙁 i just think it’s so sweet.

We know how absolutely villainised Rosalie is like The ENTIRE series which is so fucked because she’s wonderful yeah she has flaws but she’s so harshly judged but once again in MS we get to see edward actually explain that he DOES love, care for and respect rosalie. He respects her lot like they don’t really Like each other very much but they love each other and actually are like really similar, they have SUCH similar outlooks on vampirism as each other obvs PBS (Post Bella Swan) everything changes n stuff but i would love to see post BD their relationship get repaired and see bella and rosalie bond over something that isn’t just renesmee.

anyway TLDR; I think the cullens family dynamic is actually really nice and they all love each other and all have their strengths and weaknesses that compliment each other and i love them a lot.

NO Tier *STOLE BLOOD

my simple explanation for that tier is that stealing Adam's blood disqualifies you from kissing privileges so it's nothing against the dynamics but rather the insane medicial malpractice, I could scream about Adam/Megan for days they keep me awake at night (negative) then there's Sarif who is disqualified for the above reason but also I just see him more in a familial perspective than romantic, I can respect the old man for trying to mend stuff in MD but he's still on thin ice

S Tier

Eliza/Adam - Is it too much to want a metaphysical gf for Adam, goddamn I miss Eliza, anyways, the obvious parallels of being prototypes to each other, being the one to be there for the final decision in panchaea, even moreso when Megan was suppose to escort Adam through that last mission according to the wiki, she reaches out for him and calls his name, he immediately meets her eyes when he realises its her, Adam what the fuck did you mean by "oh so you want us to run together and have a night life" what is that freudin slip, entity learning to live meets human who is relearning how to live, I think about them a lot

Francis/Adam - toxic yaoi [lite] I think Francis's the most guy with visible screentime with Adam (HR + Black Light + System Rift) a tale as old as time, the classical duo, how can I help you FRANCIS (slur) writing your fanchild and releasing it to the wild, what the hell, sure. I like characters with history and assholes characters who have a soft spot for each other (esp with Francis considerably softening up by MD), love the echoes to each other in between the two games, "I would follow him to hell I just wish he could stop going there" also ship approved by Deus Ex/Adam's VA so that's something

A Tier

Farida/Adam - MY BABY oh my god Farida, the difference between her and Eliza in the tierlist is just about 0.0001 cm honestly, spy boy and fly girl my beloveds, they have a cute dynamic of jock4jock, even if I think the HR comics don't exist it implies a level of disclosing personal stuff to each other, and in MD Farida either broke into his house or knew the number to give him that cute little toy, the way he misses her in Black Light and wishes it was her coming out of the VTOL instead, Farida's willingness to sacrifice her life for him, my god, I will never get over not getting anything else for her and we can't even ask about her

Václav/Adam - oh boy we love the completely guy straight art of wanting to put your hand inside of another guy so much, the stuff Václav says can be so unhinged and feels like straight up innuendos, but also there are a lot of hints of him respecting Adam's autonomy (unlike SOMEBODY) and him being actually sad for the stuff he had to go through despite being a freak himself, if you don't force yourself into his business he gets boinked, what the hell little guy, Adam's favourite czech guy probably in prauge, the crush is most likely canon on Václav's end, I also think even if not romantic, Václav would be a part of Adam's inner circle

B Tier

Kat/Adam - I cannot in good faith put her last despite my qualms with the comics and the dynamic they had in said comics, I will not judge a lady doomed by the writers and the narrative, she isn't even referenced at any point despite being important to Adam, Kat deserved better therefore I'm doing a rewrite

Miller/Adam - one-sided old men yaoi, Adam and Miller are foils to each other in regards of questioning authority and wanting to do the right thing, the artbook mentions Miller being a paternal figure and thats what they probably tried to do in the Orchid scene but I'm gonna be honest here he's a father to his children but to TF29??? nah for me, the Orchid scene ended up being gay instead because of that with the first name basis and all, if Adam deserves an old man I'm picking Miller, yes there is baggage attached to the loser divorced dad but I trust Adam with his "I can fix them" syndrome

C Tier

Vega/Adam - another foils to each other, but this time it's a younger version of Adam with himself, she is Adam's pilot but also she accompanies him personally in a lot of parts (hello Black Light + Hard Line), I feel she sort of grounds him when Adam enters nihilism mode and he also grounds her in some way too, I see them more as platonic but I can see the potential, she's meant to fill in Farida's shoes (both the pilot and a confidant) but serves a bigger role, wished we could have seen more of them, or Vega in general, even fandom wise there isn't much content of her

Mac/Adam - toxic yaoi and not the lite version, they make me laugh "shooting better isn't going to make me like you / you're breaking my heart" the "we're both tools that will be forced to retire when are aren't any more of use anymore" is interesting, I feel they work if they were the last people on the earth, possible but unlikely, Mac was supposed to be Francis's counterpart but with the game cut he's just the asshole part so you get discount Francis instead so you gotta fill in the gaps yourself, I see them in a very specific dynamic that I more or less trust content of three authors only about them

D Tier

Aria/Adam - like Václav, I feel like her crush is canonical, but I feel that on Adam's side, he treats her more in a sisterly manner, I can see the potential of them being the only augmented people in the office and they obviously look out for each other considering "aug is here" on Adam's desk, she calls him worried that he going shanked by the harvester, it's sweet, wish there was more though even if it wasn't romantic, similar to Mac, fill in the gaps if you want something

bsd gaiden is good for so many reasons—it is everything that makes bsd good encapsulated in one lightnovel (it's filled with fascinating character dynamics ft. an equally fascinating plot)—but first and foremost to me always it has tsujimura, who is The most protagonist adult woman that bsd has through the sum total of its work. and she's really good <3

her relationship with her mother drives me insane periodically, and she's the single bsd female character who is part of one of the narratively significant partners/foils/etc that asagiri loves to write. she's the heart of and the narrator of gaiden and i adore her and think you can't talk about how bsd writes women without discussing her. anyway. stream bsd gaiden.

honestly Hanzo is kind of the nicest with Killua outside of the main four.

He's the one who grabbed Killua to stop him from jumping overboard after Gon,

He's the one who volunteered to go out with (and physically support) Killlua when they followed Gon to rescue Battera (special shout out as well to Bodoro and Goz, who hopped into the boat without question to row)

He's the one who stopped Killua AGAIN from jumping recklessly after Gon (and nearly getting clawed for it, Killua looked ready to murder him)

He continuously interacts with him without being demeaning to his age or afraid of his experience, treating him the same as he does Gon or anyone else. It's a sort of casual, normal dynamic with another person that Killua is particularly starved of.

read a couple of posts by people forced into parentified dynamics by other (queer!) people and 1. this is a FASCINATINGLY unfamiliar phenomenon to me, which might be unsurprising since i barely have /any/ relationships in general, but still, huh???, and 2. it probably has nothing to do with it (lest?) but it made me think of fandoms forcibly & by the throat dragging idols/characters into """"found family"""" dynamics, and, huh

really feel like fandom needs to get more comfortable with ambiguous dynamics, and how that ambiguity can be a feature not a bug! i notice this everywhere in fandom now, but this post is about sydcarmy the bear cause that is my current hyperfixation lol. sitting with ambiguity is the lifeblood of so many (all?) queer ships (also, importantly, my real-life queer experience) but i think it’s often relevant for straight ships too. no one is making sydcarmy antis ship them but to say ABSOLUTELY NOT because the nature of their relationship at this very moment is not easily defined is missing so much that is rich and interesting and sexy about figuring out what the dynamic is. *especially* for fan content (which is what a lot of us are here for actually!) using fic and meta to explore what certain words, body language, editing choices, music choices, etc mean is what makes our brains light up! (mine at least)

tension between two characters is the sexiest thing and ambiguity heightens that tension imo! whatever happens or does not happen with them in the future, at this very moment in time the undefinable quality of their relationship creates the space for shipping. this used to be a rather basic concept in fandom that seems to have gotten lost in the past however many years. i guess the primary anti response to this would be that the dynamic is *not* ambiguous—it is platonic—but like, i am with @eatandsleepwell who just included the following in this excellent post today:

and the thing about syd and carm being friends is that. they’re not. or at least not yet. or at least they need more to be friends. friends know your mom is dead, they know what your relationship with your parents is like. friends can easily hang out with each other after work. friends can be apart without the sense that the separation is akin to devastation. 

i don’t really think they’re friends! they are a weird third thing that is so delicious to me, and every single day right now very brilliant people are writing hundreds of words on this website attempting to interpret what that thing is or could be. this is the lifeblood of fandom! and the demand or expectation that ships have neon signs above them that say ROMANTIC to be valid romantic ships is just very odd to me. syd and carmy are weird and intense about each other in a way that is not easy to parse but once you decide to try and parse it, it’s such a satisfying experience as a fan. they had some major blow ups in s1, and in s2 managed to largely avoid them with the asl sorry but clearly were in unspokenish conflict much of the time (that they managed to diffuse just barely; mostly by syd walking away!) besties is not the word i would use to describe them at all. besties do not struggle this much to communicate. there are so many wonderful complicated bonkers things going on there and the purpose of this post isn’t to get into them but just to point out that they’re there.

anyone who thinks it’s easy to reduce them to any one given thing right now isn’t paying enough attention. and not being able to categorize them easily isn’t a bad thing for me. it’s the constant thrum of what is this? what is this? what is this??? that makes fandom great and i wish that didn’t feel like a hot take right now.

An excerpt from my wip on A03 (and something I’ve been too scared to share on here, idk why lmao) along with some parallels from the show. I’ve been working on a ‘The Good Place’ x ‘South Park’ crossover for some time now. I’m almost to publishing the very last season (most of it is already written and just needs to be edited ).

I’m always a lot of chapters ahead vs what I publish so I can edit beforehand. Part of this is because I’m aware I’m not a great creative writer and want to spend time editing. I’m much more in tune with writing dialogue and argumentative computer science college papers vs pretty prose, but this has been great for me to practice. Below are Google doc excerpts for the last chapter in my Season 3 of 4 I’ll drop on A03 soon:

The above scene corresponds to the Good Place season 3 finale x South Park’s 07x14 ‘Raisin’s’. It was watching those two episodes of the respective shows that got me thinking that a crossover between the two shows in the first place would work.

I know it’s long and at some parts it seems like the end games (Style and Bunny) may not even come to be (I promise they do), but I hope y’all will give it a chance :) I really do care about all the characters I write about, and while it’s quite slow burn and sometimes it feels hopeless, every one gets substantial character arcs by the end along with substantial ship gains… just in a very slow burn way.

Note- you don’t necessarily have to have watched either show to enjoy, but it’s best if you at least are familiar with South Park (since I drop in way too many useless ass references/Easter eggs to SP lmao). Almost done with season 3 of 4 but already have most of 4 already written to be edited and would love to get more engagement xD
