After the answer about the camping trip spooning I received three asks which I will show here one after the other, because I think it is easier to have all data in one place instead of answering every mail separately.

Thank you for providing specific episodes. So I rewatched all of them and I believe that unless they have a pattern of super cold camping fails happening to them and all their close friends, then it is the same incident described a little differently over time. From my side, I will also add again the Cuddle Queen GMMore, which also belongs to the campingspoon!lore.

January 2014 | Weird ways to stay warm | GMM 360

Like Anon said, Rhett mentions their friend Mike (they even show a picture of him from afar on a mountain / no face shown), having to spend the night on the top of a mountain and it being super cold so he had to spoon his hiking friend. Link chimes in to clarify they were also switching every hour, so they were regularly changing who was the big and who was the little spoon.

December 2015 | Instant food taste test | GMM 826

Rhett and Link are masked and taste instant noodles. Link says that he remembered their flavour from the last time he ate them, which was when they had a near-death camping experience and they were huddling and spooning three other guys. He then mentions it again and says "I am spooning three other guys", so I believe it was four men overall and not five. Even covered with the mask, you can still see Rhett's face fall at this. He defensively says: "I don't think we almost died. We just almost embarrassed ourselves. It was just very very cold."

March 2020 | Cuddle expert reacts to famous cuddle scenes | GMMore 1716

Rhett asks Cuddle Queen Jean about emergency cuddles and especially about the two friends of theirs spooning and switching regularly and never facing each other, so it's exactly what he also said back in 2014. He gives however more information and he just looks very amused about it and kinda way too excited to tell Jean about something that happened six years ago to someone else, apparently. Anyway, let's see the dialogue:

Rhett: We had a friend who was hiking one day at a time and he and his buddy got stranded out in the cold when hiking. C.Q.Jean: Did this really happen? R: This really happened. Link: Yes, it really happened. R: And they got lost and they were on the side of the cliff and they had to spoon each other on and off. Big spoon, little spoon, alternating all night long to stay warm and they were just like - C.Q.J: And they were beloveds? Or were they platonic friends? R: No they were just like kinda had gotten to know each other two weeks ago, they were just kinda like have been working together for a little bit and then the next thing they're spooning all night with each other.

C.Q.J: So, one word for that; awkward. R: Ha! Right, yeah... L: When it's a survival situation, that's not, did that count as cuddling? C.Q.J: Ah well you know the peace that I am talking about, that feel-good cuddle chemical stuff only happens when people feel safe, comfortable and at ease. And in both of those scenarios we're talking about emergencies where people are having adrenaline coursing through their system and fear and discomfort. R: Yeah... and they are not facing each other, they're spooning. C.Q.J: Either way, it probably worked, they survived. R: Yeah, he lives to this day. C.Q.J: And I bet they either never talked to each other again- R: (very sceptical smirk) C.Q.J: - or they're best friends. R: Right. Right. Or more.

Rhett was talking about a specific incident with specific people, so it seems like he was speaking from a place of knowledge when he implied that the people engaged in this emergency situation might have become more than friends. Did their old friend Mike form a romantic relationship with that other guy? Hmmm....

June 2021 | Do you trust me? Challenge | GMM 1976

In the intro of the episode Link tells a scripted joke that he trusts Rhett would make room for him on that board door from the Titanic in order to spoon and both keep their warmth and survive. Then he asks Rhett whether he remembers when their trust was first established. Rhett laconically replies "Probably the first time we spooned" and laughs a little. Link shakes his head and asks: "You're talking about that camping survival situation?" but Rhett does not answer to this.

Verdict: Unless this survival situation has happened to their entire social circle, then we're just talking about one single incident, in which Rhett, Link, Mike and another (newer) friend were present. My assumption is that just like how back in the college days their mates always took for granted that Rhett and Link will sleep in the same bed together because they're so close friends, similarly they were separated in two duos and spooned all night, one duo being Rhett and Link and the other being Mike and that other friend. Rhett did not want to mention themselves when he first brought it up in 2014, out of fear it would be taken the right the wrong way. To the Anon doubting he would scapegoat Mike, well he probably did. Maybe Mike does not watch the show or maybe even if he confronted Rhett about this, Rhett would justify this with the argument that nobody knows who Mike is anyway, whereas they are public personas and there would be assumptions made about them by the fans. When Link impulsively reveals one year later that they were part of this group, a moody Rhett defends their choice as an act of great need ("it just was very very cold"), sort of a no-homo reaction. Then when Rhett wants Jean's opinion about it, he once more excludes himself and Link and does not name Mike either. I doubt he was fully honest about Mike and the other person barely knowing each other. He just tries to make this as vague and secretive as possible but he seems very amused and interested in what Jean will say about it. In the end, he unquestionably implies that the two people who went through this situation (either the Mike and friend duo, or their duo) had become more than best friends. One year later, Rhett either jokes or states that they have spooned more than once (since there was a first time spoon) and Link's mind immediately goes to the dangerous camping trip, so he confirmed that they have spooned in a camping emergency and 99% it is that one same incident, except Rhett always tries to hide they were there cuddling too and Link always proves him a liar.

What's certain is that this has made an impact on them. If we combine this with the "or more"... well things fall into place, no? As for the first Anon who asked when this must have happened, well I initially hypothesized 2014-early 2015 but this data points to prior to early 2014. But in my opinion not way before that and likely after they moved to California, so around 2012 - early 2014. It could have happened in late 2013, after the newsical kiss and when the weather was getting cold. Let's not forget Link in late 2015 said he had not eaten noodles since then and so it must have been closer to 2014 than 2012. Then again he might not eat noodles at all IDK

BTW: There was one episode in which for the needs of the game Link was pretending he forgot his sleeping bag and they had to get crammed to the same one. Don't hold me to it but I remember Rhett sort of implied Link had done that in real life. But I am not sure I remember correctly, just to be clear.

In the recent GMMore "Are these TikTok challenges real or fake" , what is happening between 19:22 and 19:25 ?? Is this a code they have? So weird and random... I'm aware it's a silly thig to fixate on but still, it's been bothering me. Any toughts?

Okay. They're moving onto the next challenge and Link looks over at Rhett's sleeve and grabs it.

Rhett turns back and looks down at his sleeve, and then moves in closer and focuses on what Link is doing.

WHY? I literally have no clue. I watched it several times, including a couple times in slow mo, and I don't know. I thought maybe Link was picking something off his sleeve (Rhett threw a nut, Link had a coughing fit and then inhaled the coffee grounds, so maybe something landed on Rhett) but I skipped back and didn't notice anything landing on his sleeve.. It really looks more like Link was just trying to get Rhett's attention. (Or maybe it was just a random action? Like, 'look at that new mythical shirt', tug tug. Idk)

They've given each other little signals before, like in this video around 8:35, Link tips his head at Rhett (which makes Rhett's head tip too) and then mouths something.. and I've always wondered wtf he was saying to him..

And there's this video where they do a lot of nose touching, especially when Rhett seems uncomfortable with the question, and Link calls him out and turns it into a joke (even though it feels very much like a genuine signal between them and Link knows it).

So was the sleeve tug some kind of signal? Maybe. But I really have no idea. 🤷‍♂️ They're on camera, so they likely need to signal to each other sometimes to avoid having to cut and restart a segment. But maybe someone else has a different interpretation?

Do you think R&L will ever come out publicly?

If you had asked me this before or a little after GME 2023 or in 2023 in general or before Wonderhole at least, I would have told you 100%. I am not as confident anymore, not because I think what I believe about them has been proven wrong but simply because they seem so very not ready for it AT ALL, especially Rhett, who also puts obstacles to Link.

Noticed that moment in the latest GMMore?

For some reason they did not include in the subtitles that Link said "I've been waiting for it..... a looooong time".

This to me seems as another of the Link jokes that are not random or meaningless at all. So, this comment might suggest the possibility of it happening is not over at all, it's just that the incubation period got prolonged indefinitely. Link remains anxious to get through with it.

Rhett also said: "That's (the "Link's awakening") what about to happen if you play this game in front of everybody here".

So, it's almost certainly still coming at some point in regards to Link. When will it, well - that's the question.

I have so many thoughts on GMM #2112:

Middle school dress up complete with bow tie and suspenders was a super nice touch. Suspenders are usually low-key hot, but the fact that neither the bowtie nor suspenders really matched just made them both kind of adorable instead.

Link’s least favorite word is Sharing. Lol.

Rhett 100% threw that game, right? We all saw it? When Link got petulant with his “I don’t care! This game sucks,” Rhett got a look on his face that said ‘We are code tantrum Defcon-3, quickly approaching Defcon-2, and my bo is not going to handle another dousing’ and he basically walked Link through the rest of it. I don’t mean this as an insult to Link. Back in the 90s, everyone used to talk about how brave Marc Summers was for hosting Double Dare with OCD. I don’t see Link (who has said he has OCPD) as any different here. Rhett was being a good, supportive friend when he saw his buddy was struggling.

Rhett checking in with Link, asking if he’s okay, trying to talk him down when he started getting frustrated while guessing Bourbon – y'all, it made me so happy.

Link then graciously offered Rhett the first shower. Aww! (JK, they’re gonna share).

In GMMore, when Rhett realized where the stink conversation was going, he started blushing hard, especially when Link giggled and grinned at him. And Link was so happy to say “Stink make Rhett horny,” over and over again, like maybe he was learning something new and fun.

Seriously, there’s so much more I loved. This might be the best of the season so far, and there’s already fierce competition.

In my head it was only for the main but I'm not about to deny anyone that "talk about wieners" box, especially if it gives them a bingo (did it???), so yes. I'm definitely counting GMMore as well.

this is kind of an opinion on your response to asks you received about the crew being in GMM. i'm really sorry if this comes across as rude!! i'm not trying to be, i've just noticed this topic for a while but haven't rly heard anyone speak on it.

i personally really miss when randl & the crew made GMM feel like a big family.

years ago the crew was such an integral part of GMM that the show genuinely did not feel like "the show" without them. stevie does voiceovers because she...always has. iirc around 2016 and 2017ish fans loved to see Stevie, Jen, Mike, Alex, Chase, etc involved in videos (i know i did). if randl could get the crew to laugh behind the cameras it was a nice thing. whenever a new member was introduced it was a big thing!! like i still remember when Chase first arrived. i used to stick around for GMMore especially if it meant a couple of crew members would be in it. the crew used to prepare all of the food whenever they did challenges, and overall they were inexperienced but it was funny because it felt like they were all figuring out this GMM thing together and we were invited along in the ride.

as GMM has grown and they've expanded their reach and tried out different formats, it's inevitably lost its personal touch and i think that's been off putting for a lot of people. i think commodifying the value of the crew by moving their bts stuff to the mythical society has added to that feeling. nowadays i understand anyone not really caring about the crew, but idk if you can deny that adding in a little extra personality by including the crew more could help their problem of their currently formulaic and impersonal videos.

i've been mulling this over for a while trying to think of more to say in response, but honestly all i can say is i didn't watch gmm as it evolved, i only started like this time last year. so i have no real experience of watching it grow & expand with the crew, i only know it as it is now. i've seen a lot of mixed reactions to the crew in my relatively short time as a gmm watcher, and personally i don't know if i would rather see more involvement from the crew or not. if it would add to rhett and links enjoyment while making gmm to have the crew involved then sure im all for it, because i think gmm is good when rhett and link have fun. but obviously adding anyone other than r&l to the mix could risk losing what makes gmm so good (at times) to watch.. which is just rhett and link

Majestic mix of...oh man!

The pint of B&J in my freezer is no more. I ate it. I feel no shame. But I also decided against reaching for the ice cream maker I have somewhere. I can follow the GMM Ice cream taste test tournament without actual ice cream. I’ll just add some frozen fruit to my yoghurt, and call it a fro-yo. But, now that we are talking about frozen fruit, let’s talk about today’s GMM, in which Rhett and Link find out which fruity ice cream is the fruitiest of them all - or at least, the best.

My ideal fruity ice cream is something that has loads of real fruit instead of artificial flavouring. I think most store bought fruity ice creams have too much sugar in them. I actually used to eat more sorbets earlier in life, rather than actual ice cream, because I love everything sour. I don’t quite know if sourness is what Link calls tang - but if it is, I want my fruity ice creams with tang. But if Rhett only manages to keep his fruit taster intact through his opening speech, it’s time to let the guys do the tasting.

I’m still a little sour about B&J discontinuing my favourite, non-dairy Chunky Monkey, and I’ve never tasted the dairy version - and I can safely say we do not have anything in Banana Pudding flavour in Finland - but I made the bold assumption that the guys would prefer Blue Bell Banana Pudding in the first round, just because they’re Southern. I’m with Link on not really liking bananas on their own, but something happens to the flavour when you turn it into a full dish, and apparently, that applies to ice cream, too.  I love how Rhett completely disses everything about Texas before trying the Blue Bell.

Well, if the first round went well with my predictions, the next two rounds went quite the opposite. I assumed the guys would go for strawberries over oranges, and it was so close, darn it. And I was absolutely certain that Rhett would persuade Link to choose Cherry Garcia over the Blue Bell Strawberry. What happened? Rhett just ditched his college sweetheart, to whom he made sweet love in their dorm room, for a big hunk of Texan strawberries and vanilla? Not that I’m complaining - I knew Link wouldn’t like Cherry Garcia - I was just so sure Rhett would have enough devotion to choose B&J. This wing on my bracket is all wrong, it seems.

As Rhett so finely puts it, Link has underestimated how fruity he is. The decision between H-D Mango and Baskin Robbins Rainbow sherbet proves to be too difficult without some help, as Link goes with rainbow, and Rhett with mango. My own choice to go through in this round was the mango, even though my life philosophy is, when in doubt, go with the rainbow. But fortunately, the guys have a way to solve this dilemma, in the best way possible.

I already confessed my eternal love for Cuddle Queen Jean Franzbaum earlier today, and my feelings haven’t changed in the past few hours. After seeing her, I don’t really care which ice cream goes through. Like Link, I’m going to be happy either way. But I might be a little happier with mango.

Mango was my choice to win this region, but how was I supposed to know that such thing as a turd shaped strawberry ice cream was a thing? I am a bit concerned about how things go in the finals after seeing how much the guys liked the banana pudding.

In GMMore, Jean comes back to react to movie cuddling scenes with Rhett and Link. I already know from personal experience that dog (and cat) friends are fun to cuddle with, but I think someone should tell Link that there are other ways to see when a dog is about to poop which don’t require you to look at their butthole.  But, to each their own, I guess. I just love it when Jean asks Link if Jade’s anus winks at him.

I wonder if this episode was filmed when Rhett tweeted about always being the big spoon (the tweet is from January 7th)? This episode would explain his tweet perfectly.

Why did Rhett telling about his friend who ended up spooning his friend in a survival situation sould almost like one of those “asking for a friend” things? Like...I have this one friend who once had to spoon with his buddy. And then he goes to add after Jean says they are either not talking after that, or best friends, “or more”. Why was Link in such a hurry to move on to the next movie clip?

Surprisingly, I’ve actually seen the movies from which these cuddles are from. I don’t think the first clip is cuddling, but more like first aid, but I love the scene from E.T. A comforting cuddle is kind of the best, really. I’m not much of a cuddler, but who wouldn’t want a little comfort every now and then. But I agree with Jean, birds can’t really cuddle. I think at least someone in the cuddling moment needs to have some kind of a limb that can wrap around another creature - an arm or a leg...I guess scissor hands work, too. But I can’t believe Link hasn’t watched Edward Scissorhands!

What an interesting talk they had about Rhett wanting to cuddle a bigger man than him. Is that a dare - because I’m pretty sure the crew can find a big man who’s willing to do it.

Okay, I’m not sure if the Twillight clip is from the first one - which I have seen - but I don’t think the biggest problem with cuddling vampire Robert Pattison is that he’d be cold. I admit I was too old to get into the Twilight craze, but I just don’t get why anyone thinks he’s a heartthrob. It might be that I’m the problem, but he gives me the chills. And that most definately isn’t a platonic cuddle session.

Planes, trains and automobiles is, in my books, the best comedy ever made. I’ve watched it enought times to know it by heart, and the cuddling scene is hilarious. It makes me happy to hear Rhett likes the movie - and I think he wasn’t being sarcastic like he was with Edward Scissorhand.

I loved this episode, and especially the More. I think Link is going to hear about him looking at Jade’s butt for many years to come. But now, I’d really like to see Rhett and Link vlog about attending one of Jean’s cuddle classes. How do we make that happen?
