Do you personally believe in Asian superstitions surrounding lucky and unlucky numbers? As somebody trying to make something but unsure of how much these beliefs have an influence on me it highkey drives me insane 😭

Hi there!

I did have this same struggle once with superstitions in general. Like you, I had the thought of "Should start believing in all these things now that I'm a spiritual person?"

Superstitions are held by laypeople who have an indirect and watered-down understanding of the world of spirit. There is undoubtedly some truth in them, yes, but it is often over-simplified, incomplete or misinterpreted. Think of Plato's allegory of the cave, where the prisoners see only the shadows on the wall and not the objects that cast those shadows.

What we do as spiritual practitioners is to ponder and investigate why and how, and base our craft and cultivation on that.

Just as a layperson can tell you that aspirin reduces the sensation of pain, but a scientist can explain the chemistry of why and how it happens.

You've probably heard of iron being used as a protective metal to repel Faery Folk, right? It's a natural assumption to make that iron is somehow fundamentally harmful to fae. This fascinating post by Lailoken proposes instead that iron is in fact sacred to the Folk, and the perversion of this metal through smithing is what repels them.

Remember, that spiritual practitioners, occultists, witches, magicians, sorcerer/esses (etc) are beings that laypeople have superstitions about.

I suspect you have visited my blog because you consider yourself to fall into this general category 🙂 So ask yourself, on what basis do you believe in the superstitions of your ancestors?

Onto the topic of numerology...

If I may: what you are really asking me is, where do things get their power from?

Laypeople believe that 4 (四) is unlucky simply because it is a homophone for death (死), or that 6 (六) and 8 (八) are lucky because they are homophones for the flow of fortune (溜, and 发 as in 发财).

Is there power in this? Perhaps, from the collective psyche of innumerable people making this connection. Whether it is powerful depends on how well you can tap into that current of psychological power. I personally find the idea of homophones creating in/auspicious numbers to be shaky, so I struggle to invest much belief in it.

I do believe that there is power and meaning in numerology, though. In magic, numbers are symbols, in the same way that colours, shapes, plants, animals, and celestial bodies are.

These things have power from how they naturally express themselves in reality. Allow me to expand on this:

1 is the number of beginnings, individuality, single-pointed focus. It can be used to express both the entirety of existence or the tiniest piece of it.

2 is duality, polarity, cycles and opposite or/yet complementary forces. Day and night, yin and yang, heat and cold, mother and father. It is attraction, passion and pursuit, such as that between predator and prey, or between lovers. Hence it begins to generate movement and force.

Where 1 lacks motion because it has nothing to be moved by, 2 creates a dynamism as it strives to find balance and union.

3 is the number of innovation and creativity, born of the attraction and movement of 2. Between fire-hot and ice-cold, between Heaven and Earth, 3 is the sweet spot in between that creates life, drawing on powers from contrasting forces.

3 is the first number where stability and balance can be found (a chair cannot stand on 2 legs, but it can on 3; pyramid structures are highly stable). 3 is the number that brings a sense of space and time: length/width/height, past/present/future. Triangles are used in magic for conjuration as well as for trapping spirits.

4 creates foundations upon which all else is built. The four elements, cardinal directions, seasons, DNA nucleotides. Therefore it is a number of solidity, consistency and endurance, yet it can also mean stagnancy and obstinance. You could argue that 4 is unlucky because it can be used as a symbol of imprisonment; after all, death is a fate none of us can escape.

5 is often the number of transformation, as our five-fingered hands create and destroy. 5 brings conflict because it is attempting to break out of the solid confines of 4 (incidentally, 5 is also associated with Mars, the planet of aggression).

In East Asia, we have 5 elements instead of 4. Hence our elements work differently; they are not building blocks or foundations, instead they represent the ever-changing and dynamic forces of reality that are constantly overpowering or being subdued by each other.

Conclusion

I'm vaguely aware that numerology features heavily in Daoist magic, but I have no idea how much of what I said above overlaps with Daoist numerology and how it is used in ritual. Even so, like any esoteric tradition, it is a study of the nature of reality, and anyone can attempt to reach these revelations through their own studies and meditations.

I hope I have demonstrated that it is not so simple as 'lucky' and 'unlucky', 'good' or 'bad'. Just as it is with all things. The water that nourishes and brings life, can also destroy everything in a mighty flood.

I also hope I have been able to inspire some clarity in you on this matter 😊 good luck on the path.

E não citei na pergunta anterior, mas estou também iniciando o estudo no Tarot (através da dica do livro da Rachel Pollack no blog, aliás). E, no fim, por curiosidade, qual é a questão com a cabala hermética?

Opa, fico feliz em ajudar, amizade! O livro da Rachel Pollack é ótimo, aí é bom que você já resolve uma das 3 tretas que os iniciantes precisam resolver.

Sobre a Cabala hermética... segura que a resposta é longa hahaha. E como essa é uma questão recorrente, vou sintetizar tudo aqui. Então, eu cheguei ao ocultismo tendo estudado um tanto de Cabala judaica antes (Scholem, Aryeh Kaplan, Moshe Hallamish). E fiquei meio perplexo, porque nada encaixa ahahaha. O que a GD fez no século XIX e os seus descendentes (Dion Fortune, Crowley, Lon Milo Duquette etc) continuaram foi pegar um modelo da Árvore da Vida, criar uma conexão com os 7 planetas clássicos (Yesod = Lua, Hod = Mercúrio, etc) e codificar tudo em termos de tabelões de Excel, tipo o 777. Por si só, isso não é um problema, embora não seja um entendimento nativo às tradições cabalísticas dentro do judaísmo. O principal problema pra mim é que eles criaram uma coisa rígida, engessada. Enquanto as tradições judaicas são ricas, múltiplas e fluidas (há mais de um modelo da Árvore da Vida e de arranjos da sefiroth, há mais de um sistema de correspondências das letras hebraicas), o que eles criaram foi um negócio duro, com pouquíssimo espaço para inovação e que não dá para alterar em nada, porque se mexer um a, você quebra tudo. E, pra piorar, com frequência o entendimento que eles têm das sefiroth é dependente de uma leitura astrológica (um rabbi cabalista consegue falar em Netzach e Hod em termos próprios, mas a GD só consegue pensar nessas sefiroth como se fossem sinônimos de Mercúrio e Vênus, vide o livro da Dion Fortune). Tem até umas tentativas de enfiar os planetas externos no meio (tipo nessa versão da Thelemapedia) e o resultado é uma grande maçaroca. E nem me fale do fiasco que é quando tentam enfiar coisas de outros sistemas e fazer correlações com I-ching, runas, deuses hindus (o Crowley tenta, e é ridículo).

Para a prática, até um certo ponto, essa simplificação da Cabala hermética é positiva, porque fica tudo organizado (se você pega um livro como o Chicken Qabbalah do Lon Milo Duquette, meio que está tudo lá e cabe num livro curtinho e simples). Agora, em termos de fornecer uma base mística, uma filosofia profunda e inspiradora para a comunhão com o Divino, é um desastre completo. Não tem profundidade nenhuma, mas os caras fingem que tem, porque, né, sabe como é ocultista. Eu sempre lembro do caso do pior livro de Cabala que eu já li que é o Qabbalah Workbook for Magicians, que a autora fala pra você arranjar um diamante (!) e âmbar-gris (UM NEGÓCIO QUE NEM É KOSHER!) para botar no seu altar para começar a contemplação da Árvore da Vida via Keter. Você nem começou o negócio e já tem que desembolsar sei lá quantos mil em apetrechos. Ah, tomar no cu, sabe? Os caras estão lendo O Pequeno Príncipe e achando que é Dostoiévski, aí dá nisso hahaha. Warlocks

We are alive! Outta constant surveillance with a few new scars for the collection. It was almost fun, fighting programming and attempted murder. Giddy fun, same flavor as hysteria. No wonder nobody believes this shit, e’rything they do is so weird.

On that note, a nod to our flipside activities; magicians, defined according to our cult—

Witch: e’rybody with a practitioner alter, any alter qualified for the craft. Womyn were eligible for priestess roles, which required witchcraft, so were the majority of ‘em. It was an insult from daytime alters, a reverence from nighttimes.

Wizard: study of the arcane, research an’ tradition an’ the like. Men only could be priests, which was more books and schooling, but there’s crosso’er with witches. Only witches were called wizards, an’ most priests were not witches.

Mage/sorcer(er/ess): accomplished or ranked witch or wizard. Spiritual leaders, knew all the stage secrets an’ ritual details. Not in charge, really, but with pomp ill befitting circumstance.

Warlock: bond-traitor an’ oath-breaker, somebody who rebelled ‘gainst the group that taught ‘em, ‘specially if they cause damages to said group.

Warlocks were dressed in rags and cast out of the group once discovered, a ritual that coulda been for a body or an alter. It was violent and humiliating, and after the warlock wasn’t allowed to practice in the group.

Modern warlocks lean into the fantasy tabletop contractors, but plenty ‘a groups (abusive or no) name their outcasts warlocks. Our group had role witches rather than title witches, but warlock was both. Replaced the name or got tacked on with a ‘the’.

For any other survivors from witchcraft or witchcraft-adjacent groups, we’ve decided Warlock is a point of pride rather than contention. I can’t force it onto y’all, but it’s there for the takin’.

Galactic Acid.

The new Mike Dawes album arrived.

I listened to this on Apple Music quite a few times. I was actually getting familiar with the tunes and the cool sounds. Got those boxes checked off.

Mr Dawes is a musical magician. He is an acoustic guitarist, but with a caveat. His instrument is hot rodded and he uses "pedals" and internal microphones and pickups to trick the thing out.

He is an audiophile, as he loves finding interesting and cool sounds. I have no idea if he has a nice stereo, he just plays with intricate sounds for fun. If it takes an electronic reverb well that's fine. Even as an acoustic artist he needs a PA system to perform in venues. He gets a good mike and plugs his rig in and off they go.

I ordered the LP version (surprise!) and it just arrived from the UK in the post.

It is a translucent blue vinyl disc with dark smears, my wife says it looks like denim. Before I get to the sound I have a criticism. It is just a heavy disk in a nice jacket. It begs for liner notes. How was it recorded? Who or where was it mastered? I have a heavy geek thirst for info like that. I know from the Apple Music Stream that two tunes were with collaborators. No mention of that on the jacket. I know he IS the record label and it was probably a cost thing and basic modesty not wanting to brag about it. Still you should credit other artists.

OK what about the sound.

It is FN amazing. These are not small differences to the stream. The stream is full bandwidth APPLE LOSSLESS and my DAC doodle uses the fanciest ESS chip. The stream sounds good. The LP is totally better. It is not preference here it is just damn better!

I was actually a bit shocked. I did not have to listen long or concentrate at all. The sound hit me with surprising impact. The same speakers, and amplifier. The Audio Technica Cartridge is pretty flat in frequency response which I take to mean uncoloured. Yes there is one little additional vacuum tube in the preamp, but it must only be a modest contributor. The power amp has 12 more in the line!

The LP sound is far bigger. What was a brilliant guitarist on the far side of my living room wall is now a giant spread in front of my fire place. When he taps the guitar body for percussive sound it is wood finely crafted. String plucks are metal of fine caliber and clear as a mountain stream.

Strangest to me is the stereo mix. This is one guy with two hands and some sounds are on the left and others on the right and some in the middle. It sounds like a big wonderful room, but I know he uses a battery of strange effects boxes and stuff. The guitar is miked inside and out but somebody did magic with tracks. I want liner notes!

Whoever did the mix and the master kudos and hats off and all that. I could not help but speculate that much of the differences I hear are from the mix. I know it is the same basic recording as the stream, as there are a few clues like the count in on the last track. But this is far far better.

The recording sounds far more alive and more real. It has whatever voodoo the stream is missing. There is no such thing as lossless. The stream definitely lost something.

I listen right through twice. It is music at a high level. Part is reminiscent of those American Gramaphone releases of Mannheim Steam Roller and Chip Davis, But those guys had a band and multi-track. This is one person's vision and real time performance. This is ART.

BUY THIS ALBUM if you care about sound. I heard zero flaws in the pressing. It desperately needs liner notes.
