hi how are you i just started thinking about spark headcanons for the m9 and i'm wondering if you have ideas on that matter

going by the same rule of thumb as my VM fic, that only humans are, well, humans, and everyone else is constructs…but the Mighty Nein are just assorted people who found one another, not all made by one person.

Caleb is the obvious choice for a spark, but I’m not actually sure how I feel about that? It’s tempting to subvert expectation and say he’s just a very good minion, Mechanicsburger-style where they can often understand and reproduce sparky technology, even if they can’t built it from scratch. But his tendency to hyperfocus is pretty sparky, so…perhaps it’s just that he was guided through breakthrough by a much stronger spark, and he’s very ashamed of his, now, slash is afraid of being discovered and so keep sit on a tight leash.

Nott is a spark. She broke through in order to buy Yeza and Luc time to escape the goblins. When she was captured, they used her as an experimental subject, obviously, including either dramatic surgery or outright mind-body switching. She doesn’t know she’s a spark, certainly not at first, and when she starts to notice she assumes her odd behavior is just another goblin thing. It’s probably Caleb who points out that she’s definitely in the Madness Place, not just randomly shrieking excitedly about cannons.

No one else in the Mighty Nein is a spark, for sure…the Traveler is probably someone who ascended/had a second breakthrough/who knows (Jester is a GREAT minion!) Of the various NPCs we’ve met, I’m gonna say that Avantika was probably a spark, and Pumat Sol maybe a minor one? All Cerberus Assembly people, unforch. Essik Theyless or however we’re spelling his name, for sure, and Professor Waccoh, and likely the Bright Queen herself. I could get behind the concept that the Xhorhasian government openly is very spark-dominated, while theDwendalian Empire…well, the Cerberus Assembly has a lot of shadow power, but both sparks and constructs are more discriminated against there?
