*No spoilers here*
I finally got to see the last episodes of Disenchantment and oh, boy, was I sad to see the end of it. Not sure how much love this show got, certainly didn't get much promotion as far as I could see, but I loved it and even if the ending wasn't perfect (imo), I was grateful they gave us an extra-long episode to say goodbye.
The show was fun and it had great moments, and I loved that you could spot totally unrelated hilarious posters and signs in the background if you paid enough attention (or simply froze the video and looked for the next crazy sign at the back).
A few examples under the cut (cropped from screencaps of s3, but no spoilers at all)
Tumblr media
"How much do you trust wicker?"
Up: 50c - Down: 20$
"Spit in the face of God"
Tumblr media
My favourite: "Yes, we have RUSTY surgery tools" ?????
Tumblr media
"Have you considered burying your loved one in an elevator?" Wha- how- what??

I'm considering trying to make some Disenchantment chrochet patterns...
a couple of awesome designers have already done Luci, and I'm currently working on a flat ragdoll style one.
feel free to vote even if you don't crochet
Bonus: do you prefer 3d amis or flat ragdoll style?

No pic for Guci, because he's not actually in the show. My plan is to make a more catlike Luci, based on Zøg's description

Disenchantment Part 4
I binge watched the new episodes of Disenchantment yesterday and I’m absolutely hooked! I don’t go into that much detail but there are spoilers below for Part 4...
It was fun seeing so many new characters and how they interact with and influence the main cast. Freckles becoming a character in his own right was hilarious to watch and it was sweet seeing Zog attempt to be a better father for Jasper.
Seeing Becky, Cloyd, and even Ursula return was unexpected but certainly not unwelcome. I’m happy they got some more screen time but I’m a little sad Ursula was there primarily to get the plot with Jasper started rather than focusing more on her own character.
Ursula wasn’t the only one to get the short end of the stick, a few fan favourite characters like Merkimer either got little focus or weren’t seen at all! It’s a shame but understandable given how large the cast has grown and how many famous VAs there are with other projects on the go. I do wonder though how the plot would have changed if they’d utilised more of the already established characters.
I’m so happy to see Zog’s development from the angry, distant father he was in Part 1 to a more compassionate and understanding character. He feels far less static and one dimensional now that even more of his background has been revealed, I really hope we continue to see his growth and learn more about his past in Part 5.
I’m also glad that we’ve finally been given more clarity on Elfo’s family situation as well as the relationship between Trogs and Elves. That being said the fans predicted both a long time ago so both reveals don’t quite have the impact that the writers were trying to lead up to.
As expected I’m now buzzing for Part 5, fingers crossed it won’t be too long of a wait for the next set of episodes!

Forgot to watch Part 4 of Disenchantment on the weekend so I did it today, it was as amazing as it’s always been. My one question though is where was Merkimer? He didn’t appear at all, even if Matt Berry was busy so strange to not even include him in the background.
Also I’m kinda surprised it didn’t end as I assumed this was probably the last part, seems it’s yet to be renewed which sucks. Gonna be disappointed if this also doesn’t get an ending.

anyway, I got a headache yesterday and wasn’t able to post my thoughts but I actually quite liked disenchantment season 3. it had problems, sure, and it wasn’t as funny as the first two seasons, but that’s kind of to be expected as the plot finds its footing. I think complaints like “too much plot, not enough jokes” are pretty hypocritical considering the first (hilarious) season also got low ratings for being too episodic; there’s literally no way to win. I do, however, agree with this review that the series seems to have a hard time deciding whether it wants to be modern in its disability representation or not, with Zog’s PTSD narrative constantly shifting from genuinely touching to “haha let’s laugh at the crazy person.” however, there were a lot of things in the season that I think worked really well:
Alma. He’s an interesting character and I’m excited to see more of him!
Bean’s romantic arc with Mora. I’m not going to talk too much about this right now because it honestly deserves its own post but Last Splash is possibly one of my favorite episodes of the entire series.
Merkimer’s episode. It was easily the funniest episode of the season and offers a nice respite from the ever-moving plot.
Other gags that worked: the talking cat, the entirety of Bean’s Dagmar impersonation, Zog using his therapy puppet to be a douchebag, socialist Derek, Elfo pretending to be an explorer, and probably a few more that I’m forgetting right now.
The ending. Even though ending every season with Dagmar unexpectedly returning is starting to become a little, well, expected, Luci dying and being sent to Heaven is as hilarious as it is upsetting. More importantly, it implies that the next season will have a greater number of Luci moments, something this season was sorely lacking.
And finally, one thing that all the reviews I’ve read seem to agree on is that the voice acting continues to be amazing. Honestly, some of the funniest lines from this season only work so well because of the delivery.

this is so niche but like. i just finished part 3 of disenchantment and need to spitball a total drama au even though the show isnt done yet. spoilers and rambling below the cut.
okay so like gwen is bean. like she just gives me bean vibes i honestly cant see her being any other character.
i think noah is luci though alejandro is a strong contender noah just seems more luci yknow?
elfo I think could go in two directions. we could go the typical route and have cody be elfo bc he simps for gwen and all that but i think changing elfo’s personality/role in this au could allow courtney to be elfo.
like elves are more stereotypically snooty and classy in this au and have strict rules and courtney very much sticks to the rules but maybe lady elves or just elves in general aren’t allowed to be as aggressive and driven as she is so she leaves them to carve a path for herself.
so shes not as much of a pushover asl elfo but she’s very much a stickler for the rules and has a bit of a holier than thou attitude and is a bit stuck up
maybe shes also a princess and never mentions it because she leaves her throne behind and doesnt want to be bound to princess duties that get in the way of her doing what she wants to do yknow? and thats something she can hide from gwen but as time goes on and the elves come to dreamland (which should be called wawanakwa) gwen learns more about courtney’s princess past and they bond over it.
if we go the route with courtney then mora doesnt really exist in this au bc im gwourtney trash and that aint changing anytime soon.
but it takes a while for gwen and courtney to like each other. courtney and noah also clash but noah and gwen get along pretty well.
also noah looks like his usual self but can turn into pretty much what luci looks like when he wants to because magic demon powers and bc I love luci’s appearance so much (girl help i have gender envy for a fucking cartoon demon)
as for zog, derek, and oona, we’re gonna change them into sibling roles. lets say gwen’s dad, the king, had a lot of queens who all died after bearing him a child so gwen has a bunch of half siblings. and her dad is dead too. its the curse of zog or whatever it is in canon.
maybe cody could be derek (gwen does say he reminds her of an annoying little brother) and owen can be zog, and he rules with izzy as his queen, though it was an arranged marriage and izzy eventually divorces him to become a pirate queen like oona
and dagmar’s role can be gwen’s oldest sister, heather, who got turned to stone when gwen was younger and having only brothers and a crazy sister in law gwen idealizes heather as this great older sister despite barely remembering her. heather uses that to her advantage because she’s evil and once gwen finds that out they really dont get along (like dagmar and bean in canon)
owen is obsessed with the immortality pendant to bring his sister back to life after their drinks got switched not realizing that heather was trying to kill him so she could take the throne
i think chris should be odval bc he and bean have a hilarious dynamic that could totally be replicated with gwen and chris. and if chris has a gay wizard lover it HAS to be chef. chef is sorcerio
justin is merkimer. like really nobody else could be merkimer
trent is pendergast (my beloved) and turbish and mertz can be some hapless interns or maybe someone from a later cast, like spud and rock (that would actually be so funny spud can absolutely be turbish)
blaineley is the archdruidess of course
i dont know where alejandro fits in bc of course hes gonna be noah’s love interest but luci didn’t really have any love interests (except for kissy for a hot second but idc ab that) but i do think it would be funny if the usually unflappable demon noah suddenly has a crush on some handsome guy and is trying to hide it from his friends but hes terrible at it and gwen and courtney are teasing him 24/7 ab it. and noah is sad because alejandro would never want to date a demon if he knew what he really was but psych alejandro is a demon too. that’d be a great arc
i think beth would make a sweet bunty
and poor lindsay could be jerry! idk about becky and cloyd though… or the gunderson brothers… def need to know more about the last two before casting them
ok im crashing now but this is definitely gonna be something i revisit in the future. probably won’t post any fics until season 4 comes out so i know the full story before writing…
harold as the jester though

Some thoughts on Disenchantment so far...
Okay officially caught up on that show. And I like it! There are probably some criticisms .... maybe? At most its more what I want for Season 4? and what I hope they’ll do should it ever have to end (no gasps none of these shows last forever 8B)....
What do I want..... for Bean to be happy. I honestly am still rooting for her and Mora. I hope next season she returns and its revealed her mother separated them on purpose. Not really buying she’s gonna marry whomever Dagmar’s been planning for her... also screw Dagmar BP.
Second... uhhh for Zog to get better-ish?  Not sure how he’ll get healed from trauma and as a person but hope so 8B.
More Oona, I like her she’s awesome.
I would say figure out what it is about Dreamland everybody wants but I feel those will be answered... so maybe trogs? but that might also get answered.
Luci and Elfo to be okay/return but again figure that will also be next season.
And I guess for Derek to be happy? Or at least for everyone to quit treating him like crap. Yeah I get it he’s the annoying Cyril/Zoidberg etc of the show. But he’s still literally a kid. I’ve heard youtubers defend Bean and her bad behavior because she’s a victim of her abusive family, household, sexism, etc.
Well watching season 2 and parts of 3 were pretty bad 8B. Bean admitted she treated him like crap and instead of being thankful he pardoned her.... she didn’t do anything. No “Hey no hard feelings” or “Sorry I was a bitch”(and she was sorry, I love Bean but she wasssss). Even his mother kinda avoided him because she’s following her dreams. Just kinda hope next season, he also improved like his mother did, living at sea.
Anything else I want for next season... uh I dunno put Merkimer back to normal? Maybe dunno, I’d like to see Tess again but thats just me.

Mosaic (Disenchantment Fanfiction)
Summary: We are just mosaics of everyone we love and that mosaic shows everyone we love how beautiful they are. Bean doesn’t think she can love like everyone else but maybe that’s okay.
Fandom: Disenchantment
Word Count: 2K
Characters: Bean
Relationships: Bean/ Mora, Mentioned Bean & Everyone, Mentioned Odval/ Sorcerio, Mentioned Zog/ Oona, Mentioned Zog/ Dagmar
Warnings: Internalized arophobia, first person pov, some self-deprecation, sex mention, drug mention, mention of interspecies relationships in fantasy setting
Other Tags: F/F, Mentioned F/F QPR, Reflection/ Self-Reflection/ Internal Thoughts, No Dialogue, Queerplatonic, Aromantic Character, Aromantic Homosexual Character, Arospec Character, Queer Themes, Unreliable Narrarator, S3E6, Oneshot, AroWriMo 2021
Author’s Note: My friend sent me the line “I am a mosaic of everyone I’ve ever loved” about twenty minutes after I watched “Final Splash.” I’m working on the prompt for Week 2 of AroWriMo rn but I had to drop everything and write a short fic about this. Again, I didn’t really use the prompt but it kind of fits with week 1’s prompt romo/loveless & future.
I’m headcanonnoning Bean as aro or demiro/ greyro. I think in the show it was implied she never experienced romantic attraction prior to meeting Mora because she likes women and I don’t want to erase that in any way but Bean still gives off a big aromantic bisexual homo(queer)platonic vibe.
_____________________
My name is Princess Tiabeanie of Dreamland and I’ve never loved anyone.
I mean, I love my dad and my friends and all that but I’ve never loved loved anyone. Is that weird to say? That makes it sound like I don’t really love my dad and Elfo and Luci and everyone. I probably shouldn’t say that then because I actually love them a lot. They’re my everything.
One time, I was walking down Elf-Ally and this elf was sitting on the side of the road with some chalk. I feel like elves would really like chalk but I’ve never seen any of them use it, not even Arto, except this guy. I’d never seen anything like it before so I asked what he was doing and he said he was making this mosaic to show his love for this other elf he liked. I didn’t really understand it so he explained it to me like this: we are just mosaics of everyone we love and that mosaic shows everyone we love how beautiful they are.
I still didn’t get it so I just laughed at him and he got kind of upset and threw a piece of chalk at me. It didn’t really hurt but Luci was with me and the elf started throwing stuff at him and you know how Luci gets when he hits his nose so we left. I couldn’t really forget what that elf said though.
You see, a mosaic is a mix of a bunch of little pieces taken from different things that all come together to make one thing. There’s this mosaic at the church and it’s pretty freaking ugly but the mosaic this elf was making was just so beautiful. He used so many colors and he drew all these little pictures and hid these words I didn’t understand in them. I’d expect it to be all crude and gross like those scribbly pictures Derek would draw when he was younger that Oona pretended to love but it all came together so well. It didn’t even look like separate pieces. It was just one.
I couldn’t stop thinking about it. The influences of countless parts of my life, weaving together into an insanely complex mesh- That felt like me. I always felt like something was broken in me but maybe I’m just a mosaic.
I think my dad made me who I am the most. Even if he wasn’t really present most of my life. Sure, we don’t see eye to eye sometimes but I think we’re better because of that. He made me strong. His actions guided me into becoming the woman I am today. He taught me how to keep fighting. Literally and figuratively. He taught me to keep my head up and he taught me how to stab people. It’s pretty cool. I remember this one time as a kid he took me out to the courtyard, stole this guy’s knife, and taught me how to use it. I think I still have the knife actually. I don’t stab people with it anymore though.
(I hope he’s okay. He hasn’t been the same in awhile.)
My mom… Well, I don’t really love her anymore but I did for a long time. She was… How do I put it? A constant in my life. Even though she wasn’t there. What I felt towards her, it kept me together for a long time. When I had nothing to fall back on, I always had her memory. Until she tried to take over Dreamland, obviously. Now I just say she gave me my love for alcohol and that’s pretty sweet too.
(I still miss her. I bet she’s dead.)
You know those pictures where the guy has an angel and demon on his shoulders telling him what to do? That’s Elfo and Luci, and it’s literal for Luci. And maybe for Elfo? He did go to heaven that one time. It can be kind of annoying to hear them bickering all the time, especially since they almost never want the same thing, but I wouldn’t trade them for anything. Elfo keeps me safe and Luci pushes me to be more than I am. They make life fun. Fuller. Less lonely.
(I’m scared they might leave someday. I wouldn’t blame them.)
I don’t really like Derek but I still love him. Maybe a little less since he tried to burn me at the stake. Maybe a little more since he chickened out at the last second. And a little less because he still went through with it. And maybe a little more since it was an accident. We have a complicated relationship but he’s still my little brother, as weird as he is. He reminds me of what I have to fight for, if that makes sense. I don’t really see him as the future of Dreamland or anything but he’s still a little kid and I can’t really help but have a soft spot for him. Don’t tell him I said that.
(I wonder if he’ll keep me around when he’s king. I’d be lying if I said I was surprised.)
The same goes for Oona. I never liked her but I think I love her. Especially after she tried to save me from my mom. And since she became an epic pirate. She’s awesome. She’s the mom I always wished I had except she was actually there the whole time and I didn’t realize it. I’m happy with how things turned out though. I don’t regret it. Plus she’s got great taste in drugs. I still steal them sometimes.
(I don’t know if she loves me. Maybe she did once but not anymore.)
I kind of hate Odval and Sorcerio in a weird way where I like them at the same time. They’re not really family but always been there. Like they’re kind of like second dads to me. Second dads whose the sex lives I know way too much about. My gay polyamorous uncles? But they kind of care under all that court properness and tradition nonsense so they’ve kind of wormed their way into my heart. They’ve always made my life difficult but I don’t think I would be myself if I wasn’t challenged so much.
(I think they’d rather have me gone. They don’t hide it every well but I can pretend.)
I’m going to be honest, I was really bummed when Pendergast died. We were kind of the same age and he hung around the castle for most of my life. And my dad trusted him so we actually did stuff together sometimes. A lot of adventures that never really went anywhere. He could be kind of a stick in the mud but he never really minded that I’m a girl and let me tag along on crusades and helped me get better with weapons and stuff. And Pendergast was weirdly loyal to Dreamland, even after Dad forked his eye out. Or was it spooned? I don’t remember. Some kind of eating utensil. I wasn’t there when it happened. But it was nice knowing I could trust him. He could be kind of fun though when he was off-duty. Total lightweight though. He threw up on one of those little guys who carries dad’s cape once.
(I wish I’d known him better. I really miss him but I can’t tell anyone since Dad gets set off by anything that even reminds him of the guy.)
Who else is there? That’s right, Mertz and Turbish. Turbish and Mertz. Two peas in a pod. Plus Mrs. Mertz. Don’t get me wrong, they are idiots. Totally incompentant. It’s a wonder they’re still alive. But they’re sweet. And they try. They’re not good at anything but they try. Sometimes I don’t want to try but they tell me I always can.
(I’m waiting for the day they realize they could have a better life. It’ll be weird not having them around the palace.)
I even kind of like Merkimer. As a pig, not a human. God, he was an awful human but he’s a funny little pig. He lets Luci ride on his back sometimes. Both of them like it way more than either of them will ever admit. It’s cute. I think they’re friends. If they’re not, Elfo and I will start plotting until they are. Or maybe not. A Luci-Merkimer friendship might be too much for Dreamland to handle. They’re kind of a lot, even on their own. Merkimer always kind of had a big head and it only got bigger when he accepted his new life. It’s actually kind of inspiring how happy he is now.
(I don’t want him to change but he already has. It makes me sad sometimes.)
And Bunty. Oh, Bunty. And Stan! The world doesn’t really deserve Bunty. Stan does though. I think they’re the ones who taught me what real love is. Bunty always showed me love as a kid, she was like the second mom I never had but actually did have because Oona was there. But she gave me something neither Oona or Dagmar could. I didn’t really understand it until I saw her and Stan and their family together. I still don’t. They’re really sweet.
(I’d give them everything. I know they just see me as some spoiled princess though.)
I want what those two have. Or what Odval and Sorcerio have. What my dad had with Dagmar or Oona. What Elfo’s had, and Luci’s had, and Derek’s had, and the knights have had. It feels like everyone’s had that kind of deep love at some point except me. I didn’t even realize until I was talking to Mora.
I’ve had the chance to have it. Merkimer, that brother of his I accidentally killed, that one time Pendergast made a pass at me, that Steamland guy… I don’t think any of it really would’ve worked out though. I’ve had a lot of things with guys and there’s been kissing and touching and I’ve always enjoyed it but I think I always knew it would never go anywhere. That it will never go anywhere. And I can’t even blame my dad because it’s all me. It’s always been me. And I’m okay with that? Maybe? I don’t think so but I’m not really good at understanding my feelings. It’s just another thing on the pile of things I won’t work through.
I think I understood what I had with Mora though. It wasn’t… romantic but it felt like it almost was. We just… clicked. It felt right. She was tough and funny and she didn’t hold anything back. She followed her dreams and didn’t let the world get her down. That one night we had together, I felt like we were alone in the world.
Mora gave me the ocean and the stars.
She was beautiful. Maybe that’s what was missing? None of the guys I ever screwed around with were beautiful. Not like Mora was. Not like a woman can be. I really felt like this was it but there was still that disconnect. Like something was there but not quite. Like something was missing. I don’t know what it was.
But then she just left. I had that dream and I just felt so happy. I’d never felt happiness like that. And I never felt pain like the pain I felt when I woke up and the necklace was gone. I definitely would’ve cried if Elfo wasn’t there. I might’ve actually cried a little bit. It’s kind of hard to hear anything when Elfo’s sobbing. Some of those tears might have been mine.
Did I love her? I don’t think so. Not like Elfo loved that boat. It wasn’t romantic. But it was real. It gives me hope. I don’t think I’m capable of the same kind of love everyone else seems capable of and that’s not even a slight at me. It’s just reality. But what I had with Mora, however brief and imagined it was, tells me that’s okay. I don’t need the kind of love everyone else has. Not when I have so many others in my life.
Still, I hope I see her again, even for a second, just to feel that kind of happiness again.
I think that’s what that elf meant when he said we are just mosaics of everyone we love and that mosaic shows everyone we love how beautiful they are. Mora was beautiful and she didn’t see it but maybe she would if she saw how I looked at her.
Stars and the ocean, I’ll never forget them. They’ll be a part of my mosaic forever.

Disenchantment has returned for a third season and its amazing ensemble of veteran voice actors has returned with it. The new season also boasts some impressive guest stars, who only appear for an episode or two, but have a major impact upon the story and setting.
Set in a fantasy realm that may also be the same reality as Futurama, Disenchantment centers around Princess Tabeanie, or Bean for short. A hard-drinking rebel who has little use for her father's ideas about marrying her off to secure an alliance with a neighboring nation, Bean feels that there's some great destiny awaiting her somewhere outside the gates of Dreamland. She's right, but she's also not too crazy about fulfilling that destiny, which involves paying a debt her mother's family owes Hell and having a crown screwed into her head.

Season 3 picks up right where season 2 ended, with Bean having escaped being burned at the stake as a witch by a mob of Dreamlanders only to find herself surrounded by an entirely different mob of Trogs: a race of stunted, sub-terrain cave dwellers, who are in league with Bean's treacherous mother, Queen Dagmar. Here's a rundown of all the returning cast of Disenchantment and the roles that they play, as well as all the guest stars with major roles in season 3.
Tumblr media
The lead heroine of Disenchantment, Bean is not your typical tomboy princess who wants adventure in the great wide somewhere. She'd be much happier if she just had the freedom to get wasted and pick up whatever cute guys she could find at the tavern, but fate (and the rest of the world, it seems) have other plans for her. She is voiced by Abbi Jacobson, who is best known as the creator and star of Broad City. She can also be heard in Bojack Horseman as the voice of Todd's ex-girlfriend, Emily.
Tumblr media
Luci is Bean's own personal demon, bonded to her for all eternity to push her to the path of wickedness. This proved to be a much easier job than Luci's masters in Hell had anticipated, and he soon began to slack off on his demonic duties to run a bar and contribute to the general wickedness of Dreamland as a whole. Luci is voiced by Eric André, who is perhaps most famous as the creator and host of The Eric André Show. He also voiced the hyena Azizi in The Lion King remake.
Tumblr media
Too cynical for the world of elves and too naïve for the world of man, Elfo is a half-elf who isn't entirely sure where he belongs. He has found a place at Bean's side, but his crush on her is unrequited and the only other love he seems to find is in all the wrong places (very wrong, incredibly sick and filthy wrong places). Elfo is voiced by writer/actor Nat Faxon, who is probably best known for his collaborations with Jim Rash, such as The Descendants and The Way, Way Back. He also played a lead in the FX show Married and the Netflix comedy series Friends From College. More recently, he's provided the voice for Captain Underpants in The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants in Space and will be playing Han Solo in the upcoming Star Wars: Detours series.

Tumblr media
Absolute ruler of Dreamland and Bean's beloved (if begrudging) father, King Zøg starts season 3 in ill health and on the verge of losing his life along with his crown. Naturally Zøg being Zøg, he's more concerned about the hat than his health. He is voiced by animation legend John DiMaggio, who is well known to Futurama fans as the voice of Bender. He also provided the voice for Jake the Dog in Adventure Time, Dr. Drakken on Kim Possible, and even Marcus Fenix in the Gears of War video game series. Recently, he voiced Heidegger in the English dub of the Final Fantasy VII remake. He also voiced both King Shark and the demon Trigon in Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.
Tumblr media
The second wife of Zøg, who abandoned him and Dreamland to seek a new life as Queen of the Pirates, Oona returns to Dreamland in Disenchantment season 3. She is voiced by Tress MacNeille, who has voiced multiple characters on both The Simpsons and Futurama, including Agnes Skinner and Mom (of Mom's Friendly Robot Corp.). MacNeille also provides the voices for Prince Derek and the Archdruidess who leads Dreamland's state religion. She is also beloved as the voice of Dot Warner from Animaniacs.
Tumblr media
Heir to the throne of the neighboring kingdom of Bentwood, Prince Merkimer was intended to be Bean's second fiancée after the untimely impalement of his older brother. While the wedding was called off after he was turned into a talking pig, Merkimer continued to hang around the palace of Dreamland being sad and/or drunk. He is voiced by British comedian Matt Berry, who is famous for his appearances on The IT Crowd, Toast of London, and What We Do In The Shadows. He can currently be heard in The Watch, lending his voice to a magic sword named Wayne.
Tumblr media
A torturer and executioner by trade, Stan is still a jovial man who does his job with a kind word and a craftsman's eye. He is voiced by British comedy legend Noel Fielding, who is well-known as one half of The Mighty Boosh and for playing Richmond in The IT Crowd. Viewers may recognize him as a co-presenter for The Great British Bake-Off. He also lent his voice to Balthazar in The LEGO Movie 2.

Tumblr media
Still best known for playing the role of Michael Bolton in Office Space, David Herman went on to become one of the most prolific voice actors in Hollywood. He voices several characters in Disenchantment, the most notable being the Herald of Dreamland. He also provides the voices for Bean's uncle Jerry and the snarky spa attendant Chazz. He can also be heard as Mr. Frond in Bob's Burgers and Dmitry in Central Park.
Tumblr media
Bean's mother and King Zøg's first wife, Dagmar is a wicked witch who has big plans for Bean involving some sort of prophecy. Season 3 will find her once again manipulating her daughter for her own sinister designs. Dagmar is voiced by Sharon Horgan, a comedian and voice actor who has appeared in several British sitcoms including Catastrophe and This Way Up. She provides the voices for Courtney Portnoy in Bojack Horseman and Kathleen in Bob's Burgers and also appeared in the movie Game Night

One of the most prolific voice actors in the business, Maurice LaMarche is perhaps most famous for his impression of Orson Welles, whom he played on both The Simpsons and Futurama. His voice was also dubbed over Vincent D'Onofrio's performance as Orson Wells in Tim Burton's biographical film Ed Wood. LaMarche's chief role on Disenchantment is the treacherous, three-eyed minister Odval, but he voices a number of supporting roles as well, such as the legendary demon hunter Big Jo.

Bunty is Bean's simple-minded, ever-pregnant maid. She is voiced by Lucy Montgomery, who will be familiar to many fans of British comedy. She appeared in the 2011 revival of Absolutely Fabulous, The Armstrong and Miller Show, Bellamy's People of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Tracy Breaks the Internet. She can also be heard on a number of children's programs, having lent her voice to both Thomas the Tank-Engine and Bob the Builder.

The chief wizard of Dreamland ever since he was allowed to put stars on his dunce cap, Sorcerio is perhaps the most incompetent member of Dreamland's ruling council — a low bar to jump over. He is voiced by legendary voice actor Billy West, who is instantly recognizable to fans of Futurama as the voice of Fry, Zoidberg, Zapp Brannigan and Professor Farnsworth. West has provided several iconic voices over his long career, including the title characters from The Ren & Stimpy Show and Doug. West pulls quadruple-duty on Disenchantment as well, also providing the voices for the Jester, Sir Mertz, and the Elf King Rulo.

Season 3 of Disenchantment briefly finds Elfo confined to a freak show, where he befriends a sarcastic mermaid named Mora who has dreams of being an actress. Mora is voiced by Meredith Hagner, who might be recognized as Portia Davenport from Search Party. She also voiced Madison on Bob's Burgers.
Tumblr media
Rich Fulcher as Sir Turbish - Best known for his work with Noel Fielding and Matt Berry on various projects, Rich Fulcher returns to voice the awkward but well meaning Sir Turbish.
Lauren Tom as Trixy - Well known to Futurama fans as the voice of Amy Wong, Lauren Tom lends her voice to Trixy: a female Torg who develops a truly disturbing attraction to Elfo.
Richard Ayoade as Alva - Best known as Maurice Moss from The IT Crowd, Richard Ayodae plays Alva, the mysterious man who essentially rules Steamland.
Phil LaMarr as God - Best known to Futurama fans as the voice of Hermes Conrad, Phil LaMarr returns as the voice of God, the chief deity of Disenchantment's cosmology.

Thoughts on the future of Disenchantment
One of the things I really loved about futurama was the rich cast of background characters and their (often surprising) relationships with each other. All of them had nuanced, surprising, and often quite poignant backstories that made them more memorable than your typical one-character-trait background cast, and I hope we see something similar in Disenchantment as it matures.
I'm not sure who will be included in the show's core extended cast of characters, but like Futurama I'm willing to bet we were introduced to them in the first few episodes of the series. In Futurama, the core cast included Amy, the Prof, Hermes, Zoidberg, Nibbler, Zapp and Kif. In Disenchantment, our core hero cast seems to consist of Tess, King Zog, Oona, Odval, Sir Pendergast, and hopefully Prince Merkimer (as our recurring Zapp like character).
Anyways, if this is roughly our secondary cast, I've been wondering what the series might do with them. After all, Groening had been planning this show for years, right? Seems to me the overarching plot is set in stone, so it might be worth looking at these characters a little closer.
Tess- I think Bean's drug vision of Tess and Elfo will probably come to fruition further down the line. Tess and Elfo had a great dynamic, their banter was funny and it was bloody good to see someone actually hold him to account for his shitty actions. Despite storming off at the end of her introductory episode, Tess still attended Elfo's funeral. It would also be nice to see her friendship with Bean develop. Bean needs positive pals in her life, but up until Tess, all she ever had was her grumpy ass dad, her drinking buddies, a Demon and an elf who's convinced he's the right guy for her.
Odval- Definitely one of the more interesting secondary characters. Usually, royal advisor characters like this are shady as hell, and while we're led to be suspicious of Odval's dealings with Oona, I think his intentions are largely good and probably focused on cementing a lasting peace with Dankmire. Or maybe his true allegiance lies with Dankmire, that's another possibility. Which brings me to Oona...
Oona- I loooove Oona and I really hope the show totally subverts the whole evil stepmother trope. Certainly seems that way now that Dagmar has been revealed to be Evil. Did anyone else notice that during King Zog's flashback, you could see Oona in the crowd (wearing a flower crown, sweet summer child that she was)? Makes you wonder just how far back her dealings with Odval go (who can also be seen in the flashback sitting beside Dagmar).
Socerio--I don't have much to say about this guy atm. I like him (especially his relationship with Odval) and I guess he plays a similar functional role to Zoidberg in the series, but other than that, nothing to mention. Personally I think he's the weakest member of the secondary cast in terms of memorability.
Sir Pendergast-- This is one of the characters I'm a bit lost on how to read, but also one of my favs because I just expected him to be a Gaston type? The show sort of flips between portraying him as really likeable and bit of an asshat. Like Tess and Elfo, I think Love's Tender Rampage potentially set up a slow burn romance for Bean and Pendergast. His sudden interest in her halfway through Season 1 doesn't make much sense without a later payoff, and Groening is well known for planting seeds that don't grow into anything until much later on. Plus they have a fun bickery dynamic, it's the type of opposites attract that could really be done well. The fact that he does have a few really likeable scenes makes me hope he'll be an important regular later on.
Zog- Does anyone else think this guy's days are numbered? I wouldn't be surprised if he was bumped off (even just temporarily) in order to raise the stakes for Bean. It would also call into question who would take the throne, Bean or the Prince, and who would the council accept?

Disenchantment - my thoughts on the first season - Spoilers!
Tumblr media
So I am in the middle of binge watching Season 1 again, just to really get into the show a bit more. You know, listening to the jokes more carefully and what not.
On the whole I like the concept and I was really excited for it when it was first announced. However, I did not go in thinking it would be the next The Simpsons or Futurama because of course it will not. Those two shows, while made by the same team of people ( more or less) are vastly different both in humour and in tone.
It is clear that Matt Groening wrote this series to be more of a drama with hints of jokes and not a full blown comedy. And with that mind I think it’s not fair to judge the show against Futurama or Simpsons. I saw too many people comparing the three and it honeslty just takes away from the enjoyment of this show.
Sure, one can clearly see the three are related, more so Futurama and Disenchantment but aside from some surface similarities there’s nothing linking them.
For starters, Disenchantment does not have pop culture references of any kind. The humour just comes from situations or from certain characters. Or from a play on words, which is refreshing, because, with the medieval setting they could’ve easily done that.
Ok so let’s take it in order.
The concept:
Tumblr media
I really like how they set the show’s timeline somewhere in the Middle Ages but they combined several different things in order to make it more ambiguous. Like, if you look at Dagmar’s dress and hair they’re clearly more 18 century than anything else.
The theme song could have been memorable but as it is it’ just sounds nice and it is kind of entertaining but it’s not something one would hum randomly at times.
The animation:
Tumblr media
Right away I can say that it has some similarities with Futurama in the way 2D is combined with the 3D environments. Specifically the castle being 3D just how Planet Express’s HQ was 3D at times.
Otherwise, I’m not bothered by the animation. It’s not as crisp as, say, modern The Simpsons but it doesn’t need to be because it kind of matches the time period chosen.
The Characters:
Tumblr media
Being that we only got one season so far I can’t say much about the characters other than they are likeable and sometimes actually fun.
Bean is nice and I can relate to her since I have buck teeth and also the same protruding upper lip. I was bullied in school for it and it is quite refreshing to see a main character in a tv show look like me. Makes me feel better.
She has potential to be develop quite nicely but I’m going to hold judgement till then. She bears similarities to Leela from Futurama.
Luci is hillarious but I feel like there are some sides of him we’re yet to see. He is very much like Bender but even more mean-spirited than him.
Elfo is adorable but very confusing. I kinda understand what they want to do with him. He was an elf working a boring job with a repetitive life, expected to just feel one way for the rest of his life. It was shown he was quite the ladies man too. He says he wants to experience life and so goes out of the elf world and meets Beans. But when he does that his character gets confusing. I mean, on one hand it is understandable that he’d be naive and quite stupid of the outside world, not knowing what war is, what with previously living in a world of perpetual smiles and sunshine. I suppose, that he is a bit too happy compared to how he was shown in the beginning of the show, a little too stupid but maybe in season 2 his character will be fleshed out a bit more. - he resembles Fry a lot.
The other characters are ok. Many of them are character types I’ve seen before.
Odval reminds me of one of MOM’s sons from Futurama.
Prince Derek reminds me of a slightly smarter Ralph Wiggum.
Prince Merkimer reminds me of Zapp Brannigan (my favorite animated character).
My favorite character from Disenchantment has to be King Zøg. He is voiced by the talented John DiMaggio. I love this character. He is hillarious. From the way he reacts to stuff to the jokes that form around him. I’m really watching especially for this character.
Also, bonus points for having a gay couple on this show in the form of Odval and Sorcerio.
The plot: Spoilers!
Tumblr media
I admit, I thought that Disenchantment would have episodes with no relation between them, much like Futurama, but boy was I wrong. In actuality it’s half-half, in a way.
Even from the first episode we’re introduced to the plot but we just don’t know it yet. When Elfo gets caught with Bean and Luci and taken to the palace the King is happy to see him and cages him because apparently elf blood is magic. We’re not told why the king wants the magic but the audience presumes it’s because he is full of him. Only till we reach the last 3 episodes of season 1 do we understand that the plot was under our noses the whole time: the King plans to resurrect his first wife: Dagmar.
I thought that touch was interesting if easy to miss on a first watch.
I think what Matt wanted with this series is to seem episodic but in reality have little things sprinkled throughout the episodes that connect the plot together.
One thing that does strike me as odd is the fact that sometimes it feels like the show just lacks a certain energy. Looking at the fight from the tavern from the first episode which seems devoid of tension. And other fight scenes.
The line delivery is odd, or rather the timing of the line. Sometimes a character says something and there’s a pause like something funny or serious is about to happen but then it cuts to the character running or otherwise doing a mundane thing. I don’t know if im being clear with this but it’s something that bugs.
Otherwise I give Disenchantment an 8 on a scale form 1 to 10. I think it’s a good series with a ton of potential. We should not judge it so harshly because even the likes of Futurama didn’t do well from the first season alone. This show needs time to find its footing and its voice. But im sure than when it does it’s gonna be one hell of a voice.

Disenchantment review
Tumblr media
Matt Groening is the kind of guy who really knows how to parody the trappings of a genre really well. He did it to the American sitcom with The Simpsons, he did it for sci-fi stories with Futurama, and now he sets out to do it again with his high fantasy black comedy on Netflix, Disenchantment. Considering the former two are two of the greatest cartoons ever made - and it is pretty easy to argue that The Simpsons is in fact the greatest cartoon ever made - this show has a lot to live up to. Or, well, it does if you wanna be all snobby about it.
I feel like despite this show having only a single season so far, everyone and their grandma are gonna be trying to compare this to Futurama or The Simpsons, and I feel at this point it’s really unfair. It’s like comparing a newborn baby’s accomplishments to those of The Beatles. Of course, that begs the question of how this show is on its own. Well, let me tell you after summarizing the plot:
The story is set in the kingdom of Dreamland, and sadly there is no Kirby to be found here. But much like Kirby, there is a fat bastard king running things, King Zog, who has his hands full being a terrible parent to our heroine, Princess Bean (it’s short for “Teabeanie”). Bean is a rebellious, alcoholic troublemaker with a heart of gold - think if Bender and Leela had their personalities mixed together - who alongside her two friends Elfo the awkward, goodnatured, dweeby elf and Luci the snarky demon goes on all kinds of magical, alcoholic, and hallucinogenic misadventures in her kingdom. Laughs are had, villains are thwarted, friends are made, and drugs are taken. You know, the usual. It sure SOUNDS like your typical adult comedy, but it’s not quite that bad.
Like I said, it’s really unfair to compare this to Groening’s other work at this stage. However, it’s pretty obvious that a lot of his characters here take up the archetypes of characters from his other shows. Bean has elements of Leela and Bender, with her badassery and can-do attitude of the former with the rowdy, alcoholic, and cynical nature of the latter. Elfo has elements of Fry, with his general dumbness and naivete, and appearance-wise he strongly resembles Bart. Luci has the personality of Bender in the opposite directions; where Bender was loud and rowdy, Luci is soft-spoken and aloof. And Bean’s half-brother Prince Derek is basically blue Ralph Wiggum. Of course, they’re not straight-up ripoffs or anything, they’re still identifiable as their own characters and they have unique traits to make them unique and interesting.
Let's look at our main trio: Bean is a pretty enjoyable heroine, and feels kind of odd amongst adult animated shows for being a female character who gets to be in the same sort of situations you’d find someone like Homer Simpson or Peter Griffin or Rick Sanchez. She gets drunk, fucks up a lot, and is generally just a fun character. I’m not going to make some bold claim that she’s the first female main character to ever do this or whatever, but I don’t know, adult animation seems so dominated by male fuckups as our protagonists that it’s nice to see anything with a leading lady being a fuckup. Comedy should be egalitarian. Elfo is also pretty enjoyable, what with his naive nature and just generally how upbeat he seems to be all the time, though I will say his characterization is a bit of a roller coaster this season. He starts out as a miserable, horny elf who wants to get away from all the happy sappy crap his kind does, and then he ends up dropping a lot of this to become a sweet, bumbling dope with a crush on Bean. He’s a good character, but it feels kind of awkward, almost like halfway through the first episode they decided to write Elfo differently. They do a good job at keeping him consistent the rest of the season, though. Finally there’s Luci, the little shadow demon voiced by Eric Andre. The fact he’s voiced by Eric Andre should tell you that he is the best character in the whole show, but his design is absolutely great too, being a simple two-dimensional shadow creature. He doesn’t even feel like he belongs in a Matt Groening show in the best way; it’s nice to see him branching out, especially when a lot of characters on this show look similar to a lot of the characters on his other shows (though there’s at least an equal amount who don’t look like a typical Groening creation; Luci is just the biggest example due to being a character we spend a lot of time seeing). The supporting cast is rather colorful and enjoyable too, and really help flesh the world out. Some standouts include Tess the eyepatch-wearing giantess; Queen Oona, Bean’s amphibian stepmother; Odval and Sorcerio, two members of the court who are constantly aiding Zog in his magical endeavors; and Prince Merkimer, a self-absorbed prince voiced by Matt Berry AKA George the Volcano of Volvic fame.
Now, the show’s greatest strength is its serialized nature and tight continuity. Groening has proven in shows like Futurama he can create really well-done story arcs, though of course that show was very episodic and had story used sparingly. Here, there is definitely an overarching story, and while some episodes may seem like simple episodes at first, elements of them all come back into play in the finale. It’s frankly impressive, especially since a lot of the elements that appear are ones that you’d see as one-shot things in just about any other adult comedy these days. For weaknesses, I do have to say this show is not gut-bustingly funny or anything. Sure, it has its moments, and the black comedy is definitely a lot better than that of its contemporaries, but it’s definitely a show better for story and characters than the humor. Still, there are a lot of funny gags, just don’t expect to be rolling on the floor throughout each episode.
Disenchantment is a show with a hell of a lot of potential. It had a wonderful first season that started out a bit awkward but steadily improved to an incredibly done finale that is already twisting a lot of what we know and setting up some serious stakes for season 2. For now, I give this show an enthusiastic recommendation. If you’re looking for a show that parodies fantasy tropes the way Futurama did to sci-fi, here you are! If you’re looking for a serialized adult comedy that actually tells an ongoing story while also being accessible as an episodic series if you choose to, here you go (Rick & Morty should take notes)! This show does a lot of things better than its contemporaries, and I’m looking forward to seeing it grow even bigger and better with its next season.

Season 3 of Disenchantment carries on the story of the intrepid, although complicated, Princess Bean and her two besties, Luci and Elfo, after they all accidentally gatecrash an underground cavern populated by mole-people (Trøgs). Also, her mother, Queen Dagmar, whom she had believed to be dead all along, and for the second time, makes her cliffhanger appearance with panache.
RELATED: D&D Moral Alignments Of Disenchantment Characters
Things get a lot more confusing for Bean, both on the parental front — with King Zøg allegedly "descending into madness" and Dagmar continuing on with her inscrutable scheming — as well as on the romantic front, as the young princess falls in love for the first time, with a mermaid named Mora. The other characters have their own adventures on the side, of course, but not everything they do is sensible (or nice).
10 Derek — Invents His Own Constitution
Tumblr media
Bonny Prince Derek is now the King of Dreamland, but he certainly doesn't act like it. Odval and the Archdruidess decide to take advantage of his innocence and immaturity like they had earlier when convincing him to sentence his own sister to death.
They give him a list of laws and edicts to read out to the court, but when Merkimer the Pig goads him into it, Derek starts randomly inventing rules out of thin air. Strangely, his version of the kingdom is strikingly liberal and democratic, but there's no way it's going to work in that world.
9 Sorcerio — His Silly Winking
Tumblr media
Sorcerio, the royal court wizard, is not the most annoying character in the story, but his persistent rejection of Odval's basic instruction borders on the tiresome.
His partner informs him that there is no reason to say the word "wink" while performing the action at the same time, mostly because it pretty much reveals that they have been plotting something (to any eavesdropping stranger.) Sorcerio doesn't understand this (or pretends not to), much to Odval's chagrin.
8 Odval — Tries To Assassinate Zøg
Tumblr media
Odval, on the other hand, is actually scheming to murder King Zøg in his sleep, but they opt to wait until he dies from his attack (an accidental one caused by Bean). Zøg mistakenly comes to know of the plan and makes a deal with the loyal Pendergast to smuggle him out of the castle and to safety.
RELATED: 10 Netflix Shows That Gained Popularity Despite Reviewing Poorly
Unfortunately, this ploy is uncovered, and Zøg finds that his knight has been beheaded for this "crime" and that he is going to be buried alive. The Archdruidess is directly involved in this, but Odval's role is speculated.
7 Bunty — Has A Sleepover In Bean's Bed
Tumblr media
Bunty clearly has some deep-rooted rage problems, likely derived from the horrible manner in which she is treated by the royal household (and everyone else).
It seems that she takes it out on her employers in the form of passive-aggressive behavior, such as when Bunty happily brings her kids so they can all sleep in Princess Bean's bed. This would have been understandable, had Little Bunty, her smallest child, not revealed that she had been "conceived in this bed," which is a gross violation of trust.
6 Oona — Leaves Bean To Deal With Things
Tumblr media
Oona, the Pirate Queen, attends her son's wedding to a fairy named Sagatha, but realizes that she's needed longer because of her ex-husband's mental capacity and the assassination attempt instigated by the Archdruidess in broad daylight.
She helps Bean come to terms with several of her emotions, mostly by letting her have a psychedelic trip on some sort of hallucinogenic substance. However, when things start to get dicey, Oona tells her step-daughter that she has to go be a pirate again.
5 Luci — Tricks Zøg With A Stray Cat
Tumblr media
Bean requests Luci to remain behind with her father, while she and Elfo travel to Steamland, and he grudgingly accepts this task. Sadly for him, the king treats him like a pet cat, which is horribly humiliating for the little demon.
RELATED: Disenchantment: 5 Things Fans Liked In Season 2 (& 5 Things We Hope Will Happen In Season 3)
What's worse is when Zøg plants a ruff around his neck and takes him for a walk through the town. However bad it might have been, it was terrible of Luci to swap places with a talking cat. Given the man's condition, he should have at least tried to be more responsible.
4 Zøg — Can't Stop Thinking/Talking About Food
Tumblr media
To be fair, King Zøg's mind is far too scattered to do anything really awful this season, but his psychological state does result in some bizarre outcomes. For instance, he starts randomly bursting into honks and other strange sounds, which is justifiable after his underground stint in a coffin.
But then he constantly brings up food items at the strangest of times, as shown when he asks Oona if this or that dish would be available in the kitchens. This continues even when the scenario has turned deadly serious.
3 Elfo — He Uses Trixy
Tumblr media
Trixy the Trøg exhibits an eerie level of affection for Elfo, but the elf is all for it in the beginning. Sure, she does come off a bit too strong at times, making her new lover nervous, but she's a genuinely kind character. For example, she helps them break out of prison and escape from Queen Dagmar.
What does Elfo do? Completely forget about Trixy, until she finds him again later. At this point, he is happy to go along with her ideas, implying that he thinks of her as nothing more than a means to an end.
2 Dagmar — Tries To Arrange Bean's Marriage (?)
Tumblr media
Dagmar has done a lot of atrocious things in her life, from trying to literally petrify her husband with an elaborate magic potion to tricking her daughter into fulfilling some ancient prophecy. Thankfully, she disappears for a large chunk of the mid-season, but when she returns at the climax, it is to abduct Bean and drag her all the way down to what looks like the bowels of Hell.
RELATED: Disenchantment: Which Character Are You Based On Your Zodiac Sign?
Here, her daughter sees a silhouetted man standing at an altar, and Dagmar announces that "the bride has arrived," which suggests that she wants to marry Bean off to him (consensually or otherwise.)
1 Bean — Abandons Her Father To A Mysterious Fate
Tumblr media
Bean comprehends the difficulty that Dreamland is in and hesitantly concludes that it would be best for her to take the throne (when Elfo reminds her that she has been doing her father's job the whole time without realizing it). Still, instead of making sure that Zøg is taken care of properly, she ships him off somewhere with Chazzzzz of Dankmire.
She may have believed that he would ensure her dad's well-being, but he brings the ex-king to a supremely creepy looking asylum.
