Part Three: the Escape. Because of course they escape. Of course they do. You didn't really think Lewis would just leave them, did you? Of course not.

And then comes sweet revenge.

Torture is so much more satisfying when it's deserved, Emma says with a smile, her eyes still not-quite-there. It's true, chimes Cleo, telling elaborate stories of what she wishes to do. Rikki hums a tune, a song that goes, yes-we're-gonna-torture-you-torture-you-torture-you-oh, yes-we're-gonna-torture-you-all-day-long!!! And Lewis is forced to wonder how much their time captive has irreparably changed his friends.

Denman is haunted by ghost-like figures, scratching at her ankles, and trying to pull her under. A sheet of ice envelopes around her as she's diving, just long enough to make her sure she'll die. And then it evaporates. The seas twist in ways they shouldn't, and flames spark blue.

From her studies, before she was forced to relinquish her subjects, she found that blue flame - the hottest flame - came only when Rikki was drove to the purest form of rage.

An early Halloween cartoon for New Scientist

In A Botanist’s Obsession, there are two main scientific companies that come into play.

One of those is NovaGen Solutions.

NovaGen Solutions

NovaGen Solutions was a nuclear testing company based on the island of St. Ardyn’s Rock, off the coast of England. They advertised themself as an innovator in cleaner nuclear energy, radiation shielding, and production of medical isotopes. Publicly, they were able to maintain the image of a clean brand by sponsoring scientific conferences and green-tech expos.

Their island facility is located on a small island off the coast of England called St. Ardyn’s Rock, an island only used for vacation destinations due to its great weather and wildlife. The facility was originally used as a military radar station in WWII, but after the war it was decommissioned and the facility was quietly acquired by NovaGen in the early 2000s.

This facility was internally called “Project Emberfall.”

Away from the public eye, they developed tactical nukes for a group of private investors, testing the limits of nuclear technology. Their experiments were incredibly unstable, using subcritical materials and utilizing extreme energy state simulations. Some say there might have been human experimentation to simulate nuclear warfare scenarios.

It all started with one event. The day they put their project Calyx Protocol into motion.

The objective of the Calyx Protocol was to develop a contained micro-fusion reaction using exotic particles to achieve clean, small-scale fusion energy bursts. This could be utilized as a power source for satellites, submarines, or mobile bases.

This took place underneath the Emberfall facility, Blacksite Theta, a subterranean research complex.

But something went wrong. A miscalculation in one of their key technologies, muon resonance frequencies, caused a feedback loop inside the confinement chamber. Instead of dissipating, the reaction pulled ambient quantum energy from the surrounding matter, effectively “eating” the vacuum buffer meant to stabilize it.

A radiologically devastating release occurred. The release emitted exotic radiation that affected organic matter on a genetic and neurological level. On top of that, it emitted beta particles with no known half-life, meaning that they do not decay, only transform nearby matter.

And like disaster after the other, there was a single shockwave of light, and all outside communication ceased instantly.

The aftermath that occurred was that everything organic (plants, animals, and others alike) were altered. Structures within range were partially fused with rock & vegetation. Metal beams grew bark, and computers pulsed with chlorophyll.

The island was filled with nuclear radiation. Although, the farther away you were from the Emberfall facility, the harder it was to detect. Without a proper hazmat suit, exploring St. Ardyn’s rock would most likely be detrimental to not only your body but also your mind.

Before long, it stops being boring and starts getting frightening. Denman's moral compass, it turns out, isn't too rigid.

Cleo's stories become sad. Stories of longing for warm homes and watching films with friends. Game nights. Sitting in physics lessons and playing hangman. As much as she might try, Denman cannot direct these stories to the story of how she became a mermaid. Cleo is resilient in her silence when it comes to that topic. Denman does, however, manage to convince her that Emma and Rikki are dead, and she is able to carefully record how Cleo's emotions impact her powers.

Working in the same vein, she does her utmost to enrage Rikki. She details the most awful things she can imagine and tells her this is exactly what she's done to her friends. Ignores Rikki's venomous insults, simply noting down the way Rikki's temperature rises with a satisfied curiosity.

Emma is the most difficult to get an emotional response from, so Denman dedicates her to the most science-y stuff. How long can a mermaid hold her breath for? It turns out, not even a lack of oxygen can get a real rise out of her. She splutters and claws at Denman's arms, but once she's out of the water, she returns to that place behind her eyes.

Danny, choking on his drink: Nuh uh, your the normal one Tuck, I died and now have a magical girl transformation and Sam got kidnapped by ninjas and somehow even more bad ass, you...you can still get out of this and just be a normal person.

Sam, nodding sadly: Yeah...don't conform to our standards Tucker, be your true, weak little boney self.

Tucker, sniffing:I am so going to not do that.

Just the idea that Sam not only got League training but also got out is hilarious to me, like yeah, that is the kinda bs that would happen.

Alsoni can just see her dropping random lore shit.

Sam, bored as the boys study: Did you know thst the Demon Head dunks himself in corrupted ecto? Yeah it's gnarly man, didn't taste good.

Danny, going to speak before pausing and thinking, before sighing:Yeah I would have licked it too.

Tucker, frowning as he finishes his "Evil invention-enator": You both have so many issues.

Sam, trying to teach Danny the basic league hand to hand:Come on dude! It's not that hard!

Danny, falling flat on his ass after not even touching Sam: Ow ow ow...fuck yeah it kinda is!

Sam, shrugging before putting kicking at Danny on the floor: I don't know she was following a guy around who was catatonic, said something about being angry at him for not answering her pen pal messages or whatever, I was more busy training to really care...like you should be doing!

Years later Sam is joining Danny and Tucker in Gotham, Tucker because he was scouted by both WE and Lexcorp, he wanted to choose the evil company because poorer work place regulations and the likely hood of him getting a powerbost was much higher, but was bullied by his friends/partners into choosing WE.

Sam, coming to the R&D labs late one night bringing Tucker dinner so he doesn't starve working a late shift, blinking as she sees a short boy sneaking out of the lab: Biraeam? (Sprout in Arabic) what are you doing here.

Damian, blinking right back, experimental tech Bruce has yet to clear for the field clutched under one arm and the blueprints for a new type of explosive batarang in the other: Manson...I-I could ask you the same.

Sam, raising an eyebrow and staring down Damian: bringing dinner to my husband...who works here...and I can only think that you do not. So I ask that you put those things you have down and tell your bastard of a grandfather not to step back in this place.

Damian, eyes squinting, he hadn't been around his grandfather for ages at this point but still felt offended at her tone: I don't think I will.

Sam, slamming her hands down on the table as she stands: Kindly Mr Wanye, Shut the fuck up, I know your batman, we all fucking know it so if you are going to try and interrogate us at least do it properly!

Danny, sipping his wine: I mean...I-I didn't know but I um...haven't been paying much attention to the bat dude...Rag man is cooler.

Sam, glaring:And you! Fucking Ragman? You can do so much better.

Danny, offended for his hero: Oi! He does good work!

Bruce, frowning as this night has gotten away from him: He kills people.

Sam, waving over at Bruce: Exactly!

Danny, rolling his eyes: Exactly she says, while having a kill count that's still growing, Exactly she says when she was the one that pushed that oil tycoon off the 50th floor.

Sam wincing,: Maybe not in front of batman babe?

Danny, looking over to Bruce that is looking ready to fight: Shit...imma call Tuck and tell him to start packing...
