THOUGHT/ANALYSIS: Ex_Machina is a 2014 sci-fi thriller film. In the opening, we see programmer Caleb Smith, who is working at the largest search engine company in the world, Blue Book. He is selected at random out of all the employees to spend a week at the home of the company's reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman. Upon arriving at Nathan's remote home, Caleb learns that he is not there to merely hang out with Nathan: he is to meet Nathan's latest invention, an A.I., and to evaluate whether he thinks it possesses consciousness. The film takes place over the course of the week, with Caleb's conversations with the A.I. named Ava, as he (and us, as the audience) possesses intelligence. The film also keeps an element of suspense, as Nathan's true intent opens up a number of questions about what Caleb is doing there, and who (or what) is real and what is an artificial intelligence. There's not much action in the film, and it instead focuses on suspense and mystery. There's also a lot of focus, as you might expect, on discussions around A.I., and the film invokes many theories around the subject. There's a balance between exploring the subject in depth, but also keeping it interesting enough so that the average viewer doesn't tune out, and there's definitely times when that balance was not hot for me: I know a fair amount of the different conversations and arguments around A.I. , so I personally didn't need too much of an explanation for everything, but when the film mentions things like the "Chinese Room," or drops names like Wittgenstein without any follow up, you get the feeling that this film is oriented more towards those who would understand these things. Nevertheless, I think there's enough content and intrigue regarding the set up to make it watchable for a more general audience, but not if they're expecting something with a decent amount of action.

The characters present themselves as a fairly mixed bag: Caleb himself is pretty bland, and we don't really see much of a personality, but I think this may be a deliberate choice to make Ava seem more human by comparison. Nathan is clearly meant to be a pretentious "tech-bro" CEO and unlikeable from the off, and they certainly succeed with that. He is actually very annoying to watch. Ava as a character has an element of the typical A.I. archetype you see in films, but also the film keeps open the question of what she is programmed to do, and what she herself intends, which adds a layer of mystery and intrigue. It's perhaps no coincidence that Ava comes off as the most human character in the film. Nevertheless, all the acting is quite good, even if you don't like the characters.

A lot of the film's aesthetic and dialogue choices are very deliberate, but perhaps it's easy to miss them. A lot of the dialogue between Caleb and Ava takes place with a glass partition between them, and it seems to be a recurring theme that there is always something that is separating the characters. Whether this is meant to signify that the two are two individuals that can never fully understand one another, or that there will always be a barrier between A.I. and life, is perhaps purposeful. The contrast between the expansive landscape shots that surround the house, and the tight corridors and windowless rooms again create a feeling that the house is a prison or labyrinth where the questions raised are somewhat disconnected from reality and experience. Ex_Machina is a slick, polished film that clearly has a had a lot of consideration put into how it looks, and how each aspect of the film invokes its themes. It tries to balance an in-depth exploration of its subject with also giving more casual movie-goers something to watch, but I'm not sure that balance is really there. The twists and developments of the film just weren't too interesting or surprising, and I'm not sure the film has aged enough to provide any lasting significance, since the field of A.I. is changing and evolving very quickly. Maybe some people would find it gripping, but it didn't quite hold my interest to make it entertaining.

The Empress represents commitment, so what’s the most important thing in your life right now that needs your loyalty and perseverance?

Also, your feminine aspect is asking to be heard. You need to be in touch with your intuition and emotions while dealing with these earthly matters. This transformation isn’t asking you to be completely rational—but rather to use your intuition alongside your rationality. For example, if you’re structuring a routine, try to feel what works best for you. Get it? With The Star, there’s definitely a message about growing up—letting the shadow side of innocence go, and discovering the real world, where it takes time for some dreams to be built. Right now is the perfect moment to be honest with yourself. Don’t delay your evolution—it will only make things harder. Just be real. There are more beautiful things in the real world than you might imagine.

The Hanged man, Page of Coins

I see a bird—maybe an eagle or an Andean condor. Whichever one resonates with you, birds are messengers. I feel more drawn to speak about the condor. In Andean culture, condors are seen as intermediaries with the spirit world. They're a type of vulture, which deepens their symbolic connection to death, rebirth, and transformation.

I feel something stirring in the chest area—likely a transformation related to your relationships, how you view love, and how you see yourself. There’s also a sense of deep exhaustion, a feeling that you can’t live like this anymore. That’s powerful, especially since this full moon is all about releasing everything that no longer serves you. You don’t have the energy—or the time—to keep dealing with these same issues.

Even while you may feel hopeless or defeated, there’s a spark you can’t ignore—a sense of renewal, of rebirth, something completely different from what you’ve known. Interestingly, there’s also an eagle in the Hanged Man’s card. The card depicts the myth of Prometheus, who defied Zeus and was punished: an eagle would eat his liver daily, and it would regenerate, only to be eaten again. Eventually, Prometheus is saved—but only by Zeus’ permission.

This tells a story of divine permission, divine timing. It reflects the moment when your higher self knows it’s time to break a pattern, time to be free. This feels like something you’ve been waiting a long time to heal from. But now, finally, you are free.

There is hope here. There is trust in divine will, and trust in yourself—for holding onto faith along the path. No more torture.

The Empress, Death, Page of Wands

A change in the way you see the world around you is happening. The third eye chakra is being activated. I saw a mountain—Everest, perhaps? A peak. A place where you can retreat from society for a while to reconnect with your true self. Afterward, you return—ready to share what you’ve learned.

This reminded me of Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki. He meditated for 21 days on Mount Kurama, and it was there where he channeled the Reiki technique. For this group, there's a profound spiritual transformation taking place.

If you feel called to pick Pile 1, trust that instinct. Go ahead—follow what you’re feeling. The Empress appears here again, which suggests that both piles are connected.

Now, there’s something really fascinating in this message. In the Death card, we see the ruler of the underworld—Pluto, or Hades. The word “Pluto” comes from the Greek Plouton, meaning wealth or riches. In mythology, when people died, they had to carry coins to cross the River Styx and reach the underworld. Without the coins, it was said they would suffer at the river's edge.

Symbolically, this means that Death requires something from you in order to pass through and reach a new beginning. You must leave something behind to receive what comes next. You can’t fully embrace the new if you’re still holding onto the old. And again, this full moon is all about letting go of what no longer serves you.

Interestingly, Scorpio rules the 8th house, which—just like Pluto—also deals with money and wealth. On a deeper level, it’s in the underworld, in the unconscious, where true riches lie. Real transformation. Real gold.

The Empress also appears alongside the Death card. Her theme is abundance and creation—she’s pregnant in the card, representing new life. The Page of Wands is present too, which symbolizes fresh energy and beginnings. Together, these cards speak of a powerful spiritual rebirth. A big one.

At the same time, you may feel uncertain, even fragile—like something just born. And that’s okay. Just as a mother cares for her child, The Empress reminds you to nurture whatever new energy, ideas, or insights are coming to life for you now. You don’t need to share everything with everyone—protect what’s growing.

Im Morph, the anon that sent an ask about how i watched Ex_Machina because of your Nathan fics and now in doing my dissertation on the movie! I’ll be honest, i’m not doing too hot on that, but it’s okay!

Thing is, doing this just gives me an excuse to think about Ex_Machina all day, and with ex_machina thoughts come Nathan thoughts… So i’ve just been thinking about reader and Nate having a kind-of sugar baby / sugar daddy relationship but is not (necessarily 👀) sexual, it’s because reader makes an amazing +1.

Like smart af, has all the people skills and patience Nathan lacks and yk, since they started to go places together the tabloids have stopped talking about him, so that’s why he keeps reader around.

Except SIKE he’s absolutely down bad for her, but he also sucks and has the emotional maturity of a rock so he won’t admit it for shit.

To be honest, that’s all the daydreaming i’ve been able to cram together for now, because i’m with the dissertation + apprenticeship, so i have to crunch all the story time in my pre-sleep scenarios lol. Though i kinda realised it reminds me a bit of some of your fics so i though i’d share!
