Exhort One Another

Wherefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as also ye do. (1 Thessalonians 5:11 ASV)

Exhort - "1. To incite by words or advice; to animate or urge by arguments to a good deed or to any laudable conduct or course of action.

To advise; to warn; to caution.

To incite or stimulate to exertion." (Webster's 1828 on e-sword) We are also instructed to "build each other up". I could say that the two instructions are the same. However, the one word seem to be more toward a work. Something that we do. Perhaps it could be the exercise of your spiritual gifts, or perhaps to evangelism, or perhaps encouraging to good works or any of the number of things we do in the body of Christ. Building up, seems to lean more toward instruction or teaching. "Each other" - you do not need to wait for the pastor to encourage you. You do not need to wait for someone else to encourage you to be an encouragement. Just be an encouragement. Use your gifts to encourage. Perhaps your gift is evangelism, take someone with you. Let me start with the encouragement. Have you read your Bible today? Will you read your Bible with me? Two Ways to Live? I think there are times that we could all do with encouragement. Life isn't always easy. Let us determine to be an encouragement, even if we ourselves need encouragement. Father, please help us to be an encouragement. If we are in need of encouragement, please send people across our paths to encourage us.

corollary to those tags on the "do you know how to use a gun" post: basic firearm handling is an important life skill IF you live someplace where a random visit to some acquaintance's home carries a low but nonzero risk, akin to "it's highly unlikely the house will burn down but still worth requiring smoke detectors in building codes," that little Timmy will come into the room playing with a real handgun that his shithead idiot dad thought he could just store in an unlocked desk drawer. or where talking a suicidal friend off the ledge might involve persuading them to drop the gun long enough for you to grab it and unload it.

if that kind of emergency sounds not just rare but inconceivable in your country, awesome, i'm happy for you. if you're a USAmerican gun abhorrer in a blue-city bubble, i am fucking begging you to learn the basics of safely holding, checking, and unloading a firearm even if you have no plans to ever pull the trigger on one. the majority of US gun deaths are suicides and a significant chunk of them are accidents, and if you're ever in a position to prevent that, not knowing what to do with the damn thing except treat it like it's gonna bite your hand off will actively hinder you.

it just struck me that so many of frank's stories are about his old band -- rakov, jimbo, the pianist he committed grisly murder for (alledgedly, from corroborating elements of his nature we do get to witness I believe him, but also somehow doubt it's the whole story) lol -- but none of them seem to have come along into the aeon program. he even includes them in his 'when did I understand I possess great vision' interview answer -- it's 'I think that's when I knew we were the real shit'. the metaphor that he's huddled up all alone playing the hits from a previous life (a previous life where notably for all his longing he does not seem to have been particularly happy either, if lady s is any indication) is of course pretty in your face, but I'm so curious about the details here because unlike some of the others frank does seem to have lingering affection and attachment to these guys from the outside and some surviving drive for connection and group belonging. were they not included on the invite, did they wisely not want to fuck with that shit, did frank not bring them in, had the creative partnerships there already fallen apart by that point? as I understand it frank was hired to kill anyone getting cold feet, so I could see him being like '...well maybe not bringing the boys then because that could get fucking awkward'.

Director Sanchez shook her head. “All right, Dr. Vander,” she said, rubbing her temples. “For the record, and in your own words, what happened to cause… this?”

I took a deep breath and rubbed my arms, feeling a little chilly. Not that I had a lot of room to complain about that, not at the moment. “Well,” I started, “I was here late last night, confirming the calibrations and running the next-to-last-minute checks before today’s test. And I thought to myself, ‘well, I have a unique opportunity here. I could be the secret first human to teleport, before tomorrow’s official test.’ And so I did it – I set a timer on the controls so I could teleport myself from one pad to the other.

“Of course, once the teleport went off, I found myself naked and still on the sending pad. Then when I looked at the receiving pad, there was a dead copy of me in oversized clothes. No pulse, no breathing, room temperature. That’s about when I realized I was shorter. So I checked all the diagnostics and the readouts, and they didn’t say anything strange had happened. I double-checked the records of the animal tests, and they didn’t show anything like it. I repeated some of the inanimate tests, including with some of my hair, and everything teleported just fine.”

I looked up at the director, trying to be confident despite my diminutive height. “So… I teleported myself again, to see if it was some kind of one-time glitch. And the same thing happened again – I was smaller, I was still on the sending pad, and my clothes ended up on the receiving pad on another me with no signs of life. Well, I took that me over by the first one, and I got curious, so I checked, and the second one was identical to me, and we were each half the weight of the first one, which is about half of what I weighed last time I checked. So I figured, for some reason, half my mass was getting teleported as an inanimate me, and half was staying behind with my consciousness, and I have no idea why that happens with me and not the animal tests. And, well, at that point I figured I might as well get as much data as possible, so I tried with just the sending pad and just the receiving pad…” I trailed off.

After several seconds, Director Sanchez thumped her fingers on the desk, nearly knocking me over. “Doctor?” she asked, a little harshly. “That’s four halvings, which would leave you…” She tapped at a calculator, then continued, “…a little over two feet tall. Even ignoring the count of inert bodies, you’re visibly only two inches, which means fifteen teleport attempts. Unless your math disagrees?”

I flushed and looked down, fidgeting with the edge of my toilet paper wrap. “N-no, Director,” I said. “It’s just… the feeling of the teleporter running was… arousing, and it got stronger the smaller I got. So… I figured out how to set it to activate on a loop, and just… got off to it.”

She sighed, and I felt like I was about to blow away. “While that is… potentially useful data,” she said grudgingly, “it was also completely unprofessional. You realize that, correct?” I nodded, and she continued, “You didn’t even prevent the same thing from happening to Dr. Olsen, since she tried to pull you off of the pad instead of shutting down the teleporter, and got caught in your fifteenth cycle. Though you did prevent it from happening in front of a crowd of reporters, which I’m sure she appreciates. You are, of course, fired, effective immediately.” I nodded again, unsurprised.

The director pressed her intercom button. “Dr. Kim? Have Drs. Vander and Olsen’s emergency contacts arrived?” My eyes widened. I had, admittedly, been doing a lot of not thinking ahead in the past several hours, but until that moment it hadn’t occurred to me who I’d be relying on for the foreseeable future. My emergency contact was my sister, Jenny.

As if my thought had summoned her, Jenny’s voice filled the director’s office. “Melissa? Is that really you? God, you’re even smaller than I pictured.” I grinned up at her nervously and waved. She scooped me up with one hand, surprisingly gentle, and exchanged a few words with Director Sanchez before carrying me out of the office.

Once we reached her car, she held me up to her face. That was actually more nauseating than anything else, between the motion and the up-close view of her pores and wrinkles. “Well, little Liss,” she asked, “what are we going to do with you?”
