B, J, Q, S for ask me, fandom edition!
B.) A pairing you initially didn't consider but someone changed your mind:
AZDICK!!!! it blipped on my radar very recently….and the Potential…it makes me curious. Unfortunately I haven’t fallen super off the deep end yet bc I actually need to re-read/finish Knightfall + the ensuing arcs. It was the great @dustorange that made me realize jpv and dick could have many issues for each other <3
J.) Name a fandom you didn't care/think about until you saw it all over tumblr:
hmm. Idk I was wary of the Six of Crows fandom on here after reading the book, and was planning on never interacting beyond the actual text. But then I stumbled across great fics and a couple blogs that I liked that changed my mind.
Q.) A ship you've abandoned and why:
For a hot second I shipped damijon. I know...wrote fics and everything (will never get published) and then I actually read more and realized that I actually kinda hate Supersons (comic). Learning about Chris Kent and actually getting into Superman, just kinda widened the rift between my former love for the ship and the realization that I was really only into it bc Jon is the only immediately obvious m/m ship Damian has in fandom (broadly) and notably, I was still in high school. Since then, my hype for any ship with Damian, period, has dwindled by a lot but I still prefer Chris, Colin & Nika over Jon. They are just friends to me, and even then, not a big fan of Jon being his only friend ever.
S.) Show us an example of your personal headcanon:
Random: Colin Wilkes's voice is a little deeper and a lot more gravelly/rough than a normal kid's due to the effects of the Venom. It make the transition into Abuse easier, so he can better pretend to be an adult, but it also is another one of many factors that play into his lack of enthusiasm for fostering/adoption. He thinks it's funny to imply that he's been smoking since he was a baby though (Damian falls for it once).
Another one is that Damian doesn't do well with overly-sugary/sweet foods, and they make him nauseous the first time he tries anything in Gotham. After he actually throws up once, he vows to never eat American desserts again. (This fails, mostly because ice cream is more palatable, and you can only refuse enough times before Dick finds it suspicious and asks if he's lactose intolerant. He is not, and Damian insists so. Alfred is still selective w his dairy for a while.)
Serious: Both Damian and Talia struggle with making/having friends because of Ras. Not because he forbade them, but the League environment just makes it hard and painful, and Ras doesn't understand how much that matters bc his friends are either long dead/intellectual pawns. Any friends Talia had died, went on to betray her, or simply aren't close to her anymore -- and she's went on to cut off any connection to the League she can. Damian has never made friends easily, but he has gotten along w other kids in training in a friendly competition-sense. Because of their experiences, Talia is maybe a little too insistent that Damian cling to any friends he makes in Gotham, and frowns upon the connections he still keeps w the League. Damian is, of course, very annoyed by this.

Comic run: hard to pick between blue beetle 2006, Batgirl 2000, and robin: son of batman
Single issues: batman chronicles #5 (oracle year one story) and batman chronicles #8 (talia story) are really good and I love them
I’ve never read blue beetle but Batgirl 2000 and Robin: Son of Batman are some of my faves too. Honestly they’re like the textbook definition of a Good Comic™️.
I think I’ve possibly read Batman chronicles #5 but I don’t really remember. It’s been a long time since I’ve ready any oracle stuff tbh. I know I haven’t read #8 so. I’ll put them on my to-read list tho~

i know you said you think 90s aquaman would be executed differently today - do you mind explaining how? I'm curious about it (and reading thru that series atm :P)
Absolutely! While I do think 90s Aquaman is the best overall run, there are plenty of cringe-y things that could be improved upon. I think a lot of people forget the context of the time something is published (unfortunately, the 90s are actually several decades behind us) and while that doesn't excuse anything, it does open up potential to see things that don't age very well.
I think the overall treatment of Mera and Dolphin would have been better. Dolphin is so clearly written as a Love Interest First, Character Second that it puts her in an unfair light. Mera as well is hardly in the series, which I don't think DC would want these days. If it was written today, I think DC would have kept Mera around and had Dolphin be the Other Woman/Love Triangle aspect. I hate love triangles, so I don't think this would be an improvement per say, but it is what I think would happen. They would probably develop both women as being opposites of each other though, which could be fun.
Speaking of, I think they would have spent more time on the Garth/Dolphin romance. It's clearly a "we don't know how to use Dolphin now" moment because she was not very developed outside of Orin's storyline. I'm still down for a Dolphin/Garth romance, of course, because I think DC is still too cowardly to let him fuck a mermaid. Maybe in another 30 years? But with Dolphin as a developed character, the romance could happen over time instead of over a few issues.
I think Koryak and all the interactions with his people would be handled with a lot more research and grace. Admittedly, I have never heard an Inuk individual's stance on this comic (if you know of anyone, please link me!!), but reading those issues now...much improvement to be made, for sure. I would love to have Koryak really promoted as an Indigenous hero and that could happen if they had the right writers/researchers on the team. His powers are cool and honestly, I really like Koryak. This also applies to Orm, who is also an Inuk in the series. Although his purple Ocean Master outfit is my favorite, I total redesign could be cool. My hot take is that Orm is better when he's a jealous human. Not that New52 Orm is bad (it's the only character change I LIKE in the recent series) but there's something SO funny about Aquaman having super petty villians.
Vol 5 has a huge cast of really interesting characters, but not all of them got to shine. I think it's more likely that several of them would have gotten mini series or limited solos if it was made today. There's so much opportunity to lean into different mythology as well from around the world.
I think the lore of Atlantis overall would not need much changing (it's nothing like the current run, but in my perfect world where this is happening, the current run is wiped out and restarted lol) BUT if they wanted to loop in some characters who came from anything post-Flashpoint, I think a lot of them would fit very well into the storyline. The downside is that the writers would need to use their noodle and actually adapt the characters, and Aquaman writers are not allowed to do that. I think DC takes them out back and shoots them if they try. That's why none of our faves are in the comics :/
so tl:dr...more respect for the female characters, more respect and research into cultures used in the story, and better focus on some of the minor characters. If only...

Absolutely no rush!! You’re doing me a favor here lol
Heard! I’m off to TNN then :) Idk if this is the space era but I did read Justice League Odyssey but I was only there for Jessica Cruz and don’t remember anything that wasn’t directly happening to her lol
I’m really enjoying how Starfire has been handling the situation actually — she agrees that Jaime will find the best solution and she’ll support him but she’s also the only person who doesn’t diminish his feelings when they do kill the Blood Scarab! I’m really looking forward to more of her :)
I have spent the last few weeks in a haze of reading all the Jaime Reyes appearances where he actually does things and now 1) I am caught up 2) I am deeply invested in the budding mentor/mentee relationship between Starfire and Jaime and Khaji. Any recs for getting into Starfire? I despise the cartoon and I am already tired at the idea of wading through so much misogyny so I am submitting this ask to an expert!!
aahhh sorry for sitting on this ask a couple days, i forgot.
so i am not a huge fan of toon kory either and the good news is that classic comics kory is nothing like toon kory at all. toon kory is like an entirely different person.
the favorite kory i've seen is her first appearances, NTT (the New Teen Titans (1980)). That has peak kory characterization IMO and she is such a fun character.
I know that Kory also has a space era, but I have not read it so I can't comment on it.
I definitely feel like if we had NTT Kory some of Jaime and Kory's interactions would have been different.... Jaime would be like "I think I might have to kill blood scarab :C" and kory would be like "okay I agree with you don't feel bad!"

Prompt #100 Celebration! đź’Ż
Hello all you comics sleuths. I hope you've been having fun filling these unusual prompts and showing your detailed knowledge of comics events! It's hard to believe, but we've just passed our 100th prompt, so I'd like to commemorate it with a leaderboard of sorts. This isn't something I'm going to keep up to date, but I figured for a special occasion it'd be fun to see some stats.
Fun fact: At the time of posting this, nobody has filled #100 yet!

I would've liked to credit those of you who did multiple at once, but at this point it was difficult to find them all. If we do this again in another hundred, I'll keep those in mind.
Anyway, thank you so much for participating and making this a fun little blog! And even if you haven't filled any prompts, just knowing you're out there enjoying and reblogging means a lot. Here's to the next hundred! đź’™
One last fun fact: The very first person to fill a prompt was @oliverqueenlance!

I took inspiration from @fancyfade and tried out binding some single issues together into a book! My end goal is to bind all of my Huntress comics together, but for a test run I picked up a bunch of issues of Azrael for 50c each on the philosophy that I can give this to my little brother who likes Azrael.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cover's a little uneven and there's definitely room for improvement where I joined the text block to the cover, but it's a real book and I'm proud of how it turned out.
More pictures/notes on the process below the cut:
I mainly used this tutorial which fancyfade recommended. I knew this first one was going to be more practice/proof of concept so I didn't want to spend a ton of money on it. I did buy the bookbinding ribbon and the PVA glue recommenced, but I used cardboard instead of bookboard for the cover. I did layer a couple types together to make it sturdier though. I had trouble finding/figuring out what sort of fabric should be used for the mull that supports the spine, but I saw some people on reddit suggesting cheesecloth as a substitute so I went with that because it was cheap and I could find it at the supermarket. I sacrificed a old stained sheet my mom had lying around for the cover. (A non-stained portion--the smudges you can see are from the glue.)
Here's the text block all sewn together. I used some extra embrodiary thread to sew them up.
Tumblr media
Here's the block after I glued on the mull and some paper to secure the spine. The cheesecloth shed a bit, but it got the job done.
Tumblr media
And then here's after attaching the cover while waiting for the glue to dry. I'm putting my No Man's Land omnis to good use! (Though I did end up switching them out for my Sandman omnis later because I wanted read the NML ones.)

Do you think that Tenel Ka uses the Force to dull any phantom pain from her missing arm? (I also need the distraction)
WHAT a great question :D with the disclaimer that I am not an expert in this topic:
phantom limb pain is common from what I’ve read, so it’s very likely to be something tenel ka would experience. I think especially early lightsabers TK might at first try to ignore it or power through it - lightsabers features so much growth for her, but you can’t tackle everything at once, yknow. So much of her feelings about being an amputee are tied up in her desire for bodily autonomy and independence, and so she might try to hold onto mentally controlling or ignoring pain - however, in lightsabers, she also comes to the realization of considering her use of the force another aspect of herself, not something that takes away from what she can accomplish. The force having application as a disability aid would probably tie in really well to her arc here.
noting that she was on a hapan ship when most immediately dealing with her injury, I think she might distrust doctors and be disinclined to see one about this due to everyone who was there being more motivated by the queen mother’s agenda than her welfare, and being extremely ableist to her in the process as I recall. In contrast, I think the early chapter in lightsabers where she considers and contrasts her experiences with Luke’s provide an indication that she might eventually pick his brain about possible force using techniques for controlling this type of pain. They are shown to have a relatively close relationship in this era. we don’t get much detail on like, medical facilities in Luke’s Jedi academy (the series is a bit sparse on logistics), but I could still see TK experiencing some friction depending on how they operate.
and of course this aspect of force powers would fall under the control umbrella of we use the control, sensing, alter classification of force powers, and is more specifically and aptly named control pain. I am curious if a Jedi could attempt to use this power for long term pain, or if it would be a strain in and of itself for that. One thing I read said that phantom limb pain may eventually dissipate with time, so perhaps using control pain might bring one to a point where it’s not needed. The force also could maybe be used to directly administer some treatments that are attempted to alleviate pain like nerve stimulation. Either way, this would be something she would likely be getting information from Luke about, and possibly training, as there might be some danger in attempting to learn this as an unsupervised student.
@fancyfade - I’m curious if you have any thoughts on Jedi using the force to manage chronic pain

Tim and Damian each for: 5, 14, 21.
5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?
Okay, this was actually super hard to answer because I don't actually have like playlists for my fave characters. But these are the songs I went with. These aren't songs that I think are specifically about the character or apply to their lives/situations in any way.
I just think these are songs that they would like by bands that they would like. I actually think Damian and Tim would have pretty compatible music tastes tbh. I think Damian would have a more varied music taste while Tim is more of a music snob. Also I think both Damian and Tim would be really into My Chemical Romance but they would for sure argue over which album is the best album.
Tim:
Live and Let Die (specifically the cover by Guns N' Roses)
Damian:
Planetary (GO!) by My Chemical Romance
14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.
Okay, so I LOVE fashion but I don't know what any of the fashion aesthetic names are so I made pinterest boards because I'm an insane person and I love visuals.
Tim:
I think Tim has a very 90s skater boy fashion. He looks at a shirt and thinks "I'm gonna cut the sleeves off that and then wear it over a different shirt" ya know. Like the fits they draw him in in the early Robin 93' comics are genuinely his vibe. Some of the outfits below are too cool for Tim in my opinion but I just think that if he's trying to look nice he'd tuck his multiple shirts into his pants.
Tumblr media
Damian:
Damian, in my opinion, would very much care about his appearance. Not in a "worried-about-what-people-think-of-me" way but in like a general just like... he just wants to look nice way idk how to describe it. BUT he also wants to be comfy. So I think he would have a very "polished-and-clean-but-still-comfy" vibe. I also think he would like darker colors and maybe like muted earth tones. Also I think he should accessorize because that's fun but I could also see him thinking accessories to an outfit are frivolous so.
Tumblr media
As for your last one. I'm not a writer so I'll answer 22 instead.
22. if you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to this character? Something you don't like?
Tim:
I love when writers tap into how Tim can be a petty bitch sometimes.
Something I hate: When writers woobify him and make him like this helpless victim character that cries about everything.
Damian:
I think a good writer for Damian has to actually have a good understanding of his character. I actually find it super hard to find good Damian fics because I'm VERY picky.
I think there needs to be a good balance of him being very blunt and direct and kinda mean at times with the fact that he's always trying to do what he thinks is right and that he is good. Also there is always a logic behind Damian's actions.
Something I hate: When people make him just like this kid with a sword that constantly is on the verge of killing people/wanting to kill people???????

(SCRIPT PREVIEW)
Hey ya'll. Hope you're all having a great afternoon! I'm here to bring you a little update about this post.
After watching some video essays for inspiration, I began developing a draft for a script about Robin: Son of Batman (2015). Analyzing the story implications, themes and motifs! :)
And because ya'll been so supportive of my nerdy endeavours, you guys are getting a special preview of the aforementioned draft! (criticisms accepted of course!)
Part of the script avaliable under cut
tagging in: @fancyfade @fluffykitty149 @cleoeatsit
The first issue of the comic run starts with Damiam returning some sort of cultural artifacts to their rightful owners; an order of monks in mainland China.  So, immediately, we got this Tomb Raider/Indiana Jones kind of plot point.
(Man I sure hope it doesn’t get abandoned halfway through and pivots to portraying  the replacement of an autocracy with another autocracy where the head of state its not even from the country as a good thing)
ahem…
He gets interrupted by League of Assassins members which he fights off with the help of his pet, Goliath the Bat-dragon. He wins said fight and is lavished for returning the sacred object by the locals
All while a masked figure is observing the scene while saying:
“(...) there cannot be redemption for the year of the blood”
This introduction to the comic is interesting because it highlights the main narrative theme and framing device of the whole story: The Quest for Redemption.
Before we even know exactly what Damian is doing and why he's doing it. We know he's looking to mend a rift. To make a past wrongdoing right. And then we find out someone wants to stop him…
This forms an interesting parallel with real life survivors of schoolyard abuse aka bullying.
Now, hear me out…
Many kids (especially those with conditions such as autism) are manipulated by their bullies into doing bad things to other children. They generally do this by preying on their loneliness and desire to be accepted by their peers. And so said kids carry out acts of hazing to other children, perpetuating a cycle of harm.
A cycle which is hard to escape from. Because if you hurt someone, regardless of if you were manipulated or not, that person will probably not trust you after the fact. And if you add into account the environment of a school, where rumors spread like wildfires, there's a high chance you develop a bad reputation. Cause other people have no way of knowing you did it while being threatened into being a social pariah. It's a no win situation.
Damian's story is simile to this. Sure, the acts he carried out were far more extreme and he was not manipulated by an outsider but by his own grandfather, Ra’s Al Ghul.  But the effects of his psyche, development and public perception are all the same.
Think about it: His claims to being either the Blood Son or the Grandson of the Demon  are basically him trying to justify his existence  to a family that, for all he knows, could abuse him again. Which leads him to having a thought process where he has to be the best of the best in the room, cause the only other alternative is death. and for that he’s punished. Even though no one ever bothered to teach him the normal social protocols for a boy his age.
So when you make that reading of Damian, and put into the context of a story where he, by his own volition, decides he’s gonna try and reverse all the harm he caused while being essentially groomed. You get something really powerful.
Well…kind of…
There’s a few things that stuck out with the framing of this arc. The most glaring one being: this arc takes place after he comes back from the dead. After being trapped in hell for the better part of a year after being killed by his own clone.
By making Damian’s journey for redemption take place after he’s been through literal Hell, there’s the subtle implication that he’s not doing it out of his own free will, but to avoid some sort of celestial punishment.
And that’s not a bad idea per se, if the comic acknowledged that implication. Because it does put an interesting question into the table. “Does it matter why we do good things? As long as we do them?” Does it matter if Damian doesn’t kill anymore because of “selfish” reasons. After all, why would an orphan he saves from a fire care if he used to be bad or not? Should that matter to anyone?
That last part is a testament, I think, to how much better executed some ideas that writers at DC have would be if they played them straight. If they acknowledged the implications of their writing instead of just doing something because they thought it would be cool or dramatic.

WIP Wednesday: Valentine's Violence Edition
Listen, I've made a lot of dubious life decisions, okay.
...And that's not stopping today!
For some reason, I've decided to try to finish three WIPs by the 14th.
Which actually means midnight the 13th.
I'm not going to tell you how much I've actually written, but I will reaffirm that this is a mistake.
So here's the deal. I will post the names of these three WIPs, you, if it pleases you, can DM the name of one of those WIPs, and I will write at least a paragraph of said work.
You can send more than one even, fuck it, the house is already on fire, but if you do send a couple in a row, maybe mix it up a lil idk.
I'll be working on these today and all day tomorrow as I try to get it together.
In any case, the WIPs:
"Lost Time" (Slobo/Anita Fite)
"A Light at The End" (Duke Thomas/Bao Pham)
"No Return" (...look there's a lot of shit going on here okay, if you see a tag and you don't understand why it's there, it probably has something to do with this--)
That's it, please, please use this opportunity to beat my ass.
I will tag people, however, instead of inflicting you with this, I instead direct you to my friend @shadowuserannie 's Much More Sane Writing Game Rules to follow instead.
Anyway, violence:

"That Really Happened?!" DC Comics Tournament Entry #31
"Not Exactly Romeo": Gorilla Issues and Other Tales
Tumblr media
[ID: The cover of Azrael number 8 which is a close up of Azrael with half the mask torn away, revealing a crazed looking Jean-Paul Valley wide eyed and bearing his teeth. /END ID]
What Happened? (Clarification from other readers)
#im not even joking he canonically has a human mother who was human pregnant with him #then he was taken out of her womb and raised in a tube where he was nourished with gorilla fluid #hes not actually half gorilla but he thinks he is. denny might’ve retconned the extent of the genetic tampering #but he very much had a human mom.
Tags from @azbats

"azrael receives nutrients from a gorilla, was periodically tortured as a fetus" Yes the gorilla thing was inaccurate but it was hiding and even more wtf event Explanation in link HERE
Extra info from @fancyfade
What Happened? (Original Entry)
his mom is a gorilla. no joke. and not even a smart one from gorilla city. his mother is a regular gorilla. direct quote from mister jean paul valley herself: "my genes were intermixed with those of an ape to make me as savage as possible... so you're right. i'm not exactly romeo. i'm not even fully human. sorry." by the way he said this to talia al ghul. because ra's wanted him to marry her. the only reason he didn't is because of the aforementioned gorilla genes. also right after he found out his mother was a gorilla he accidentally killed his younger brother. who wasn't actually technically born or alive yet so i'm unsure if that counts as killing. does it cancel out? like PEMDAS? i am unsure. moral of the story. HIS MOTHER IS A GORILLA. i swear this situation is crazier than i could possibly make it sound. read azrael: agent of the bat #1-7
