Lord of the Rings Online is objectively a kind of shitty game bc it's almost 20 years old and free, but the way they handles races is actually so funny because it's just like
Human: Kill 5 prison guards to get to lvl 2 then chill with Aragorn in a fortified town :)
Beorning: Kill a few flies on a quiet farm to level up and gently say goodbye to your family as you head off to save Middle Earth <3
Dwarf: Walk with Gandalf and assist in a prison break. That should take you to lvl 2 like all the others so you're free to go chill with your buddies up north.
And then there's the High Elf:
Oh you want to play HIGH ELF??? You pretentious fucker. You poor, poor bastard. Start with thousands of hit points. Start at in the middle of a battle. You like reading monologues? I hope so because there's a 10 minute debate between lore accurate simlarilion characters. There are no farms or cities here. No respite from destruction, only war. Endless soldiers spawning to the east. Did you know you can take passive fire damage? Well you will when you fall into the fire pits.
Flies? Prison guards? No, go save the fucking prince what else are you here for Jesus fucking christ. Once you survive that, go fight Sauron himself. Oh you failed? Really? The high elf FAILED? You pass out in agony. When you wake, it's been thousands of years. Your king is dead. The world has moved on without you. You are weak: reduced to just a few of your once numerous hit points.
Elrond orders you to sail west from Middle earth and get proper rest. Right now you are nothing. Helpless. But in time... you just might regain enough strength to fight valiantly once again.
Congratulations: You have now reached level 2!

Double plus post day because @conkers-thecosy 's "Backs to the Wall" returns today!!!!
SO EXCITED. Everybody go read this fic, it is SO good.
The summary:
"The Company of Thorin Oakenshield could no longer be described as a ‘merry gathering’.
Bilbo Baggins sat at the edge of the campfire, hugging his knees to his chest, and looked just as dejected as the others surrounding the warm, flickering flames. The woodland river was a little way behind where they had set up camp, not close enough to see, but close enough for hobbit ears at least to pick out the rushing and burbling of water. They were on the edge of Mirkwood now, the Elvenking’s Halls a full day of travel behind them, and were about to start crossing the Long Marshes.
At least, that had been the plan. Bilbo was no longer certain what was going to happen.
***
Or: Bilbo and the company don't make it to Erebor in time for Durin's Day, and decide to wait a year for a second chance to enter the mountain."
~
SERIOUSLY SERIOUSLY.
(And btw Conkers is THE sweetest ever and writes the BEST stuff and it was an absolute joy to draw our beloved idiots in this setting.)
(AND happy birthday Tolkien 🍃💚🍃)

Bonus art and stories ~ Prints, comics and more!

Ladies and gentlemen, this is Citizens of the Future number 5: Kuiper B-0085.
When it became obvious Earth's resources were dwindling, humanity sent spaceships to start slowly dwindling space's resources.
These brave human miners were short (to fit better on ships) and pumped full of testosterone (to be tougher, early days of body modification). The isolated societies of short, tough, hairy and masculine miners started calling themselves "Dwarves", inspired by the fantasy species.
Kuiper B-0085 is a colony on the Kuiper belt shared by different "dwarven" cooperatives, or clans, as a port for their spaceship cities.
Tumblr media
This dwarven miner follows the trend of customizing his work spacesuits with fantasy helmets and armour. Who says you can't explore the oxygenless asteroids with style?
Aside from miners, dwarves are also considered great, though not particularly responsible, mechanics. Using the minerals they mine to build and repair the tools used to mine even more minerals.
These mates from different clans are partaking in the holy ritual of "having a cold one with the boys" to celebrate the ginger fella having given birth to his hairy baby, and therefore, being able to finally have a cold one with the boys again.
With no sane people around to stop them, the baby's name is Direwolf Steepcliffson of Clan Copperbeard (co-op).
I caved (pun intended), I put fantasy dwarves in my SF universe... I just love them so much...
I will use these LARPing morons to show the things I like about masculinity, but also criticize the many, many negative aspects.

More character designs except this time they’re fantasy dwarves and whenever I draw fantasy dwarves they legally all need to have facial hair regardless of gender cause I think that’s cool.
Also these guys are all secretly Narnian and are also on the crew of the Dawn Treader cause I’m forever building out the crew in my mind, and it’s practicing doing my own designs. Here is some more of the crew.
The slightest amount of lore for them is down here if you care, along with general Narnia headcanons and waffling.
——————————————————————————
The dwarf on the far left is a river dwarf I’ve decided. I don’t know fully that is other than I think it’d be cool if there was a tribe of dwarves that were close to the water nymphs, and generally have great knowledge and skills that are an asset on a sailing crew.
The river dwarves are one of the reasons telmarines were scared of the water (along with the niads, however the bridge of beruna imprisoned the river god, who otherwise was also responsible for many folk tales told to young telmarine children. Their fear of water is ironic to me cause I believe there’s evidence of them coming from the Caribbean as pirates? I imagine the humans on caspians crew are like, either rediscovering their roots or the few who held on to that seafaring background. Mostly younger telmarines in the same generation as caspian, they questioned the leadership and were very happy when old narnia overthrew Miraz.)
the river dwarves are generally peaceful and most lived in hiding during telmars reign. They’re temperament is very stable and they do well under pressure. River dwarves are incredibly stealthy and only attack in necessity as self defense. In terms of stealth think like lotr hobbits, and this is a great contrast to most other dwarves in Narnia (strong strength and combat, low stealth) A lot of them abstained from fighting against telmar alltogether due to their peaceful values. They are disconnected from some other dwarf cultures which can cause some tension.
The two in the middle come from a tribe of dwarves that are blacksmiths, and also they’re siblings. The brother in particular is a toy maker by trade specifically, and loves kids. His wife (far right) has a background in carpentry. Him and his wife don’t have any but virtually adopt any child they see. The sister is always having a good time, and seafaring comes more naturally to her than smithywork ever did.
The carpentry/forest dwarves generally have a history of closeness with dryads similarly to how the river dwarves are with the water spirits. Some of that connection has been severed due to how deeply the dryads retreated and were removed when Caspian the Conqueror (not our caspian) and his descendants over-deforested. It takes time to restore that connection.
The two on the left may or may not have a situationship and the two on the right have been married for years.
Regardless of trade they’re all on the ship because they’re loyal as fuck to Caspian, the married couple kind of see themselves in a parental role to him but it’s debatable on how that actually plays out.
Also no one has a name cause I’m so bad at coming up with names.
————————
My thinking in general is that Narnian dwarves make up a lot of the trades, other races do contribute as well, (I’d imagine some marshwiggles work in stuff related to ships/seafaring but perhaps not travelling themselves) most fauns are more into the arts/spirituality, but some do take up trades (a couple of my designs from this post are tradespeople, one of them is a bard.)
I haven’t done many centaur designs, but my vague thoughts is that there are those who are more spiritual and practice prophecy, stargazing, advising, and those who are more into combat, and are protectors, or messengers.
—————
Gender and the ideas around sexuality I’d also imagine would be a lot more fluid and most Narnians are a lot more open than some of the more human civilizations. (Like it’s a country made of sentient trees, talking animals and mythical beings, and the human countries kind of canonically are like “what the heck is going on over there???” Or they’re afraid of them and try to colonize them, like the telmarines)
These are all half baked ideas but I’ve been fixated on Narnia since I was five and it’s lowkey the reason I spent so much time and passion into drawing and now have a career in graphic design and illustration, so. This is mostly all for me, so don’t mind how long this post has gotten. 🤠

Idk what temperature take this is but like
why does pop culture depict elves as being lifht and fair and dwarves as dark and ruddy?
Elves live in the wilderness/forests; they'd be the most rough and tumble of them all. Sunkissed, rugged and dark is what they'd be.
Meanwhile dwarves live in caves away from the light. Their skin would be as pale as a paper napkin. Dirty? Sure, but gleaming like a beacon after a bath.
Anyways this has been my take.

DWARFS
Bearded, burly folk who hail from mountain holds. Honorable, proud, and immensely practical, the dwarfs are credited with the development of smithing, writing, and the first state workforce.
Born of darkness and stone, dwarfs are slow to be affected by the Arcane: they are largely resistant to the effects of magic but conversely struggle to cast even fundamental spells.
Dwarfs do not innately have a concept of gender. By human standards, all adult dwarfs look like middle-aged men, leading to many terms in common tongues such as “dwarflord” and “dwarfking” despite these positions not having any associated genders. Instead, dwarfs distinguish themselves among their own kind by a codified system of style and dress known as “khrosha.” By these complex codes of braids, colors, and ornamentation, dwarfs can identify potential suitors.
Beyond this iconic appearance, dwarfs are readily recognized by unique pigmentation patterns called “zaghven.” Appearing across their bodies, zaghven resemble exposed ore veins: long, asymmetric streaks that branch and fork. Zaghven is similar to vitiligo in humans but is seen on almost every dwarf and comes in various skin tones—lighter or darker than the dwarf’s normal skin color.

Self promotion post time!!!
(As requested by my dear @conkers-theficwriter 💕)
My name is Rachelillustrates (call me Rae) and I'm a queer/body-positive focused Faerie and fantasy artist, comic artist and writer.
Main fandoms, at the moment: "The Hobbit"/"Lord of the Rings," Critical Role (campaign one), MCU Thor (and the comics that inspired the recent films), "Lore Olympus," "Suitor Armor," and Holly Black's "The Folk of the Air" series and everything attached to it.
Current main ships, in fandom: Bagginshield (The Hobbit/LotR), Gentlebeard (OFMD), Harlivy (DC/Batfamily), Oak/Suren ("The Folk of the Air"/"The Stolen Heir")
Main vibes, in both fanwork and original work: body/size-positivity and queer representation, as previously mentioned. Gnome positivity and recognition, Orc positivity and recognition, fantasy Dwarven positivity and recognition. Found family. Self-sovereignty paired with compassion for all AND the healing power of True Love in all its forms.
Biggest original project: "Tock the Gnome"
"What do you do, when you're a lost faerie in a realm that has forgotten it is Faerie at all? When you set out to save a legendary Princess that no one else believes in? When you intend to court and marry that Princess, but you meet someone else - someone fascinating - on the road? When your Love can change the world?
Follow Tock, a Gnome woman from a steampunk-society in a realm of high fantasy, as she finds herself in such a situation. Driven by a Fairy Tale about a trapped Elven princess on a floating island, she convinces her friend Bumble – an airship pilot – to join her quest to rescue her. They hire extra firepower from unfamiliar lands, and together they seek the island and the princess. But what they seek may not be quite what they expected…"
Available to read for free across the platform of your choice here.
Thanks for taking a look 🦋

Thoughts after a few drinks:
I feel like fantasy Dwarfs would fit right in as Iron Warriors. Given how many Grudges Dwarves seem to bear (Gotrek and Felix story Daemonslayer mentioning a Great Book of Grudges up to volume 469 and having at least 1,542 pages) and given how bitter the Iron Warriors Legion is, Dwarves seem they would make the perfect recruits.
