Origin Swap AU: Dedede, Meta Knight and the Dees

EFY here, I just remembered this is Tumblr, I made a new blog for my Kirby Role Swap AU.

Excuse the radio silence. Have a two (and a half, IG) for one entry.

So before going with my absolute faves, I decided to show my ideas for the main players of the series.

Kirby

A pink traveler from outer space. He arrived during the Autumn Chill in the mist of Meta Knight's rule. Once freeing Dream Land's denizens from his clutches, Kirby decided to settle down. He vows to protect his home from whoever threatens it.

Let's get the pink puff first. He stays the same. A few characters don't get swapped at all, many from the distant past. With Kirby, I just felt right, he's a character that mainly reacts.

Of course, details of his story are different, like arriving much later than canon, giving Meta Knight time to take over.

Dedede

Dream Land's former self-appointed king. A target Meta Knight had to take down to establish his power. The disgraced ex-monarch now lives at the feet of Mt. DeDeDe, honing his skill with the hammer through mochi. He's been helping Kirby a lot in his adventure. Does he have ulterior motives? Is he plotting so one day he can recover his stolen pride?

So, in this AU Dedede was dethroned six months before Kirby arrived. Enough time for some self-reflection. Here he has no grudge against Kirby, but Meta Knight; but it expresses differently than canon as his personality has mellowed down a little.

As he is swapped with MK, he takes the role of Kirby's mentor. He's more straightforward, being openly friends with Kirby, with some food related rivalry.

He trains him in the art of the hammer. Though he might be using Kirby to take Meta Knight down a peg. Dedede gives him mochi, though. Kirby is kind to teach him how to fly too.

I pictured Dedede as a rogue living in a cabin at the bottom of a mountain, but he's not alone. There are still a few loyal waddle dees by his side, like

Bandana Waddle Dee

One of Dedede's loyal waddle dees that evaded Meta Knights watchful eye. Donning a blue bandana, this fellow seems to be somewhat of a leader to the other waddle dees, taking charge when Dedede's not home.

In this AU, Bandee takes a bit of a back sit as he is swapped with Sailor Dee. Here he is in charge of keeping Dedede's cabin in order. He's still good friends with Kirby as they do get to see each other often.

Meta Knight

The enigmatic knight that took over Dream Land long before Kirby arrived. With his many control bases and the battleship Halberd, no one dared to challenge his rule, until now.

In this universe Revenge of Meta Knight happened, and he won. So technically this is a Darker AU, I guess. A heavily militarized, but miserable Dream Land, with denizens in high alert until Kirby frees them. I guess this version of the first game would have been harder in general.

Of course, once Kirby comes, Lord Meta Knight loses a lot of his power. But he is not exactly mad. Somewhat angry, yes, but mostly intrigued by Kirby and his potential. In his attempts to recover some power, he has also tried to get Kirby by his side, make him his protegee.

But he loses again and again.

Meta Knight gets to have the years-long character development to not be such a control freak. His confidence is a bit inflated due to the power trip. But eventually he will stop trying to force Dream Land to his military lifestyle, become its protector and appreciate carefree moments.

He also gets to be possessed more than any character.

Instead of getting a masked power up like King Dedede, his power ups include him getting a second phase where he keeps fighting despite his mask getting cut in half. I refer to it as Unmasked Meta Knight.

Sailor Waddle Dee

A member of Lord Meta Knight's crew, usually seen aiding at the Halberd. Though that is his role, he secretly wanted to be like the Meta-Knights. May be that's why he's challenging Kirby. But is he skilled enough with his parasol?

I hope the lack of Bandee can be made up by giving the spotlight to Sailor Dee. He has a very similar character arc, prove himself to MK and later become Kirby's friend.

As a character with little screentime, my vision for the character might not be what others have in mind. I see him as less shy than Bandee, with dreams of being a fighter from the get-go. A bit upset that the parasol is his only weapon, but he learns to make good use of it. Also, he drinks grape juice instead of apple juice.

(If you're writing meta posts and don't feel like dealing with just the canon Elejah content either, discuss how Elejah would have dealt with the plot from your chosen episode.)

Death Appreciation Week!

With Dead Boy Detectives hitting our screens on the 25th April, and with our girl Death of the Endless making a guest appearance, it seemed only fitting that we should celebrate her in the run up to the show's release.

So I will be running a Death Appreciation Week from Thursday 18th April to Thursday 25th April which will be a celebration of all things Death of the Endless!

Participation is easy. You can go through the prompt list below, and choose to create in whichever way you feel most comfortable. I am keeping this event as flexible as possible so the prompts aren't tied to set days, you just go for whatever you feel most inspired by whenever you can make the time and ideally if you are able to complete a prompt of your choosing each day of the event well then you are a star and I love you!

For your work to qualify for submission to the event, it has to prominantly feature Death of the Endless as the primary focal point. Whilst I encourage exploring her relationships with other characters, the point is to highlight Death as the central character in the work.

helloooooo ! sorry if you've already been asked : a lot, like a huge lot, of people don't trust new siwaj as a director and are disappointed of him directing revamp. i dare say myself i don't fully have faith because i don't like the slowness he inserts consciously or not in some scenes. my fave serie is uwma as well (that's how i know you from twt) and i've watched ten of his dramas (i checked mydramalist) including his two latest 'fourever you' and 'perfect 10 liners. and i found some "improvement" if i may dare say. but people don't forgive him about 'we are' character toey who is ace in the novel having a nsfw scene in the drama.

New is a complicated subject for me.

I’ll be honest that I also have reservations about him, but they’re unrelated to any of his three recent series (which I haven’t seen). My main qualms with New are his mishandling of Between Us and his insistence on tackling all the jobs himself even when he is demonstrably not equipped to do them.

If you go back far enough, you’ll see a ton of positive meta posts I made as Between Us was airing, because I went into that series with 2.5 years of goodwill toward New for directing Until We Meet Again and also for building Wabi Sabi, the only Thai studio and agency with an openly queer CEO who explicitly allowed his queer talents to be as open as they dared. Earth (Cooheart) simply couldn’t have grown the platform he has now anywhere but Wabi Sabi. He wouldn’t have felt that safe anywhere else, I guarantee it. Just based on the interviews he’s given and the homophobic bullying he went through on the sets of his early series, I think Earth could have easily been shoved out of the industry altogether under any other management.

Wabi Sabi also became a new home to Art, whose career was almost obliterated by the relentless smear campaign against him by Mew and his fandom.

Without New, we wouldn’t have Boun, because before New, Boun had spent seven years being taken advantage of and abused by the entertainment industry. He doesn’t talk about what he went through nowadays, but back in early 2020, he shared some pretty harrowing details about what was done to him by certain predatory figures in the industry. There are a million ways his career could have ended prematurely if New hadn’t stepped in and taken him under his wing at Wabi Sabi.

Then there’s Prem, who was part of Starlatiz when UWMA aired, but New maintained a good relationship with his agency to the point where people regularly mistook Prem for a Wabi Sabi artist. Wabi Sabi didn’t just post updates for Boun’s schedule, but for Prem’s, too. Even when Prem had solo projects, Wabi Sabi still promoted them. And in an era where multiple khuujin had been separated or poisoned by their agencies or managers, we could have lost BounPrem so, so easily in those early days.

New kept Wabi Sabi, a small queer agency, going throughout the pandemic barely making ends meet—if he wasn’t outright in debt.

Now, I think he did do a subpar job on Between Us. I could rant and have ranted about that for hours. I’ll save that for another time.

But I also think New deserves grace for the sheer scale of the contribution he’s made to the QL industry. To the queer community in his country. To the actors he’s fostered and nurtured. SOTUS might have been the tidal wave that really kicked off the BL surge in 2016, but without Love Sick in 2014, we wouldn’t have had SOTUS. And New was still in his mid twenties when he directed LBC, so he really has been a pioneer in many ways.

As a director, I don’t love his music choices, I wish he’d give the editing scissors to someone else, and I think he needs to get over his “sex scenes aren’t necessary because I’m good enough that I don’t need to resort to that” mentality because not every sex scene is extraneous, New, but.

As a person, as an advocate, as a pillar of the queer community, as a friend and a mentor, I will always give that man his flowers.

So while I can’t speak to the series you’ve mentioned, I can say that’s why I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for Revamp. It’s outside his normal wheelhouse, and I don’t know if he’s really got his heart in it, but I also think Boun wouldn’t have trusted him with his passion project if he didn’t think New would do right by him.

(Of course, Boun’s also a big softie where New’s concerned because of the whole Saved My Life thing, but y’know.)

Ultimately, I’m willing to wait to see the results before I judge. I don’t want to pile on doubt or negativity on a project Boun has put his blood (ha), sweat, and tears into for years.

So fingers crossed.

I love you, New, don’t fuck it up. 🫵

Hello !! So you've been putting batman's...children? (like nightwing and red hood and robins) on my dash for some time and now I'm attached 😅

Unfortunately, my batman / dc knowledge is a bit limited (as in i've seen recent movies and s1 of the 90s batman cartoon so far) and there is a lot of material so do you have any recommendations on where to start reading / watching about them ?

In actuality though, I am still fairly new to the fandom as well. I've only just started collecting/reading comics; so most of my intake has been through movies or TV shows. I can give you a break down of some of my personal favorites as well as media that can give you some good general information or an overview into certain characters. (My personal faves are Nightwing and Beastboy, so a lot of these are going to lean heavy into them)

*/^ Batman: The Animated Series (BTAS)(1992-99): The ground work for a lot of modern day DC animated shows; it helped move Batman and Co. away from a campy joke into a more dark and serious light. It was done in a dark noir animation which suits Batman the best. The first time in their roles from Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as Batman and the Joker respectively. (Was very interesting to see them settling into the roles after coming from media were they had already been doing it for a decade)

*Batman Beyond (1999-2001): This one follows an old Bruce that had to give up the mantle due to age. Enter Terry McGinnis, who's father was murdered who takes over the mantle of Batman. Animation type is the same as BTAS, and follows Terry as he has to learn to become The Batman with the help of Bruce. Interesting to see Gotham City in the future as well as any of Batman's enemy's that remained.

*The Batman(2004): This one is a WB Kids show so it doesn't have heavy topics or the same struggles as the others and tends to follow cartoon logic. However, it follows Bruce in his early years of Batman (~early 20's) as he gets his ass kicked, learns, and adapts. This one also changes the origins of some of Batman's rouges. All in all though it's good, and showcases the struggles that Bruce had to go through in the early years of Batman.

^Batman: Under the Red Hood(2010)/Batman: A Death in the Family(2020): UTRD focuses on Jason Todd, the second person to wear the Robin mantle. It gives a good gist of his story-line; both him before and after Robin, as well as the complicated emotions Bruce has surrounding the situation. DITF is a sequel without being a sequel. It goes through the different endings that could have played out for Jason from the UTRH storyline.

*/^ Son of Batman(2014): This one introduces Damian Wayne (the fifth and current Robin), Bruce's biological son. It goes over Damian's introduction as well as the rocky start that he and Bruce had as well as his eventual acceptance of the Robin mantel. Also features my boy Nightwing who is in full sass mode the entire movie and I love that for him.

*/^ Teen Titans: The Judas Contract(2017): Based off the comic storyline of the same name from the 90's, this follows the Teen Titans as they welcome in a new meta by the name of Terra, who unbeknownst to them is working with one of their greatest enemies. This storyline is an extremely pivotal point in the history of the Teen Titans. It has been included in just about every Teen Titans media and is still referenced in the comics to this day. If you are unable to get access to the OG comic's this is a very good substitute. (It is also key to the history of Nightwing and Beastboy themselves)

Nightwing: The Series (2014): Apparently there is a stand alone Nightwing mini series?????? I had no idea this existed until I had to look up the date of one of the shows. I can give you absolutely nothing about it cause, yeah, I didn't even know it was a thing.

Comics:

A Knight in Bludhaven (1996-2009): This was Nightwing's debut standalone comic. He had originally debuted in the New Teen Titans as Nightwing (or Discowing as he is affectionally know as) however he was still a Titan at that point. This run is by Chuck Dixon and follows Dick as he leaves Gotham and Bruce's ever present shadow for Bludhaven; an equally crime-riddled city. This run see's his suit move into the iconic look he wears now. It also showcases his crumbling relationship with Bruce, him trying desperately to strike out on his own, and a lot of self-loathing internal monologue. (From what I understand, as I haven't read it yet, he spends a good majority of the time being passively suicidal)

(His newest standalone run started in 2017 (I believe) and is still ongoing.)

The Judas Contract (1984): Like stated above this follows the introduction of Terra and her conflict with the Teen Titans. It is only about 6 volumes, starting with her introduction, joining and becoming friends with the team, and the eventual betrayal. Even though it is such a short arc compared to others, it has had a lasting impression on the Teen Titans as a whole as well as Beastboy as a person. This storyline has made it's way into several modern day Titan adaptations (ie the 2003 Teen Titans, The Judas Contract movie stated above). It also has the official debut of Nightwing. Prior to the Judas Contract arc Dick was still using his Robin mantel; however, after a huge fight and subsequent falling out with Bruce he don's his new superhero identity as Nightwing. (everyone's outfits are very of it's time, especially Nightwings)

Robin: Year One (2000): This one I've heard mixed reviews about, but I'm still putting it in. It's a miniseries that tells of the origin of Dick; his parents deaths, becoming Bruce's ward, becoming Robin and the rocky relationship that he and Bruce had at the start. It's a good all-in-one-place telling that goes over a lot of key points of him as Robin and his early days with Bruce as well as the debut of the Dynamic Duo. (This one is also written by Chuck Dixon)

A Death in the Family (1988): This arc follows Jason Todd as Robin. It is a key point not just in the Batman universe, but comics as a whole. (Jason was the first superhero to die. Tales of the New Teen Titans (1984): This one is a 4 issue series telling the origin of the 4 newest members of the Teen Titans: Raven, Starfire, Beastboy and Cyborg. I'm putting this one in cause my boy Beastboy is in there, but it's also good insight to have into these characters who are still a part of the Teen Titans in one form or another since their debut. (This is written by Marv Wolfman and drawn by George Perez who can be created with the creation of many superheros that still exist and are popular to this day)

Sorry for the info dump anon; you hit my hyperfixaton with a tuning fork and therefore I must sing. For the media part I only included the ones I've seen that would be beneficial or ones that I know have important information. For comics, there is definitely a lot more that can be included, but unfortunately for us comic runs are incredibly hard to follow (that's why up until recently I haven't really touched them lmao). Comics could be a whole separate post lol I can't really include anything else for the other batkids, but that is only due to me not 100% knowing their comic runs (and them not really appearing in animated media). I know Tim Drake is a key player in the Young Justice 2003(?) run, but other than that I don't have a lot of info. Unfortunately, comics are hard to find their starting point as they often cross over into other active series, or alternatively are older and therefore harder to gain access to. My best advice it to pick a singular series and look into how to get your hands on it. A lot of the time the older comic will be published in complete volumes. A Knight in Bludhaven: Compendium One is exactly that. The collection of the 1996 Nightwing run, as well as any tie in issues that it had. I know that the earlier issues of the 2017 Nightwing run is starting to come out in bound volumes as well. The only ones that would be hard to find are the one's from the 80's. If you have one, check out your local comic book store! That's where I've picked up some of my issues, and they have been extremely helpful in answering my questions and have helped me figure out the starting point for a few different series.

There's also is not a lot of Beastboy standalone stuff (beside I think one or two comics) because he's always with the Titans as their goofy, comic relief >:(

I made the mistake, after episode 7 of the acolyte, to look through the tags (I’ve given up on Reddit for sw discourse lol) and there are so many bad takes out there. It’s like people watched a different episode. I’m glad there are some good meta takes from people like you, or I’d be lost! I think nuance is dead in fandom and people just can’t see things as more than “Jedi Bad!” When there’s so much more nuance than that. Were the Jedi perfect? No! Of course not. That would be so boring. If all Jedi were always perfect, SW would be dull. It’s because they aren’t perfect that they are so compelling. That they try to do the right thing, even if it doesn’t always work out.

Hi! I hear you, it can be tough going into the tags sometimes (and I've given up on both Reddit and Twitter for any kind of discussion, I just do not have the time/energy for that when sometimes I still have to fight for my life on Tumblr) but I will say that the best remedy I have for that is to start posting the content you want to see! It's so satisfying to write down your thoughts just to have fun in your own space, I don't need other people nearly so much because I'm having a great time just making myself laugh or cry over my faves or nerding out over worldbuilding. It's a bonus that I've collected a bunch of really great people around me, both ones I vibe with and ones who are chill when our vibes don't match and we disagree on stuff. I've been having an absolute joy of a time after episode 7 of The Acolyte because I've seen some great posts, I've had some hilarious conversations, etc. And part of that is just. Letting go of a lot of fandom. I'm a lot more relaxed about the Star Wars media I consume because it's not Lucas' Star Wars, I can take or leave it as I will and, most importantly, I don't need the Jedi to be perfect to be good. So much of my need for the Jedi to be perfect once upon a time came from that any little mistake they made, ones that were completely reasonable, ones that were simply just "didn't solve everyone's problems instantly", ones that were present in other characters who were allowed to just be instead of being raked over the coals for it, and how fandom would use those as a bludgeon against the Jedi. And that wasn't fun! So, instead, yeah, the Jedi are flawed, because any character ever is allowed to be flawed. The most cinnamon roll character ever is flawed and that's okay. Luke Skywalker is flawed. Padme Amidala is flawed. Bail Organa is flawed. Yoda is flawed. Obi-Wan Kenobi is flawed. Mace Windu is flawed. Ahsoka Tano is flawed. Leia Organa is flawed. Han Solo is flawed. Lando Calrissian is flawed. Ezra Bridger is flawed. Kanan Jarrus is flawed. Hera Syndulla is flawed. And on and on and on. If those characters can have flaws and be seen as good, well, then that's how I'm going to proceed with my Jedi faves, too. Oh, Mace wasn't bending over backwards to smile and be soft when he was having the worst day ever? That's what you're bringing me to show that he was bad actually? Babe, please, Luke started out as whiny and annoying and he's amazing, so Mace is amazing, too. The Jedi were in a no-win situation, not fighting would mean people would die, fighting meant compromising themselves, they had to make a choice, there was no third way out, there was no secret magical answer in Star Wars, so they did what they could to the best of their ability. And it's not on them to fix everything in the galaxy, they're peace-keepers who were drafted into a war, they're not the whole of the government, they're not there to be social service agents, that's not who they are or what they're equipped for. And yet they still tried to help whenever they could. Everyone fucks up sometimes and that's okay, it doesn't suddenly mean they're the real villain all along, because otherwise they would have to be literally be perfect to be "good" and that's just bad writing imo. Ultimately, just take a break from scrolling through the tags if you can and join me in writing your own stuff, it's hard at first to get the words to come out the way you want them to, but with some time and energy put into it, I've found it to be so much more rewarding. <3

It gives us great joy to announce our third edition of the Hana Lee Appreciation Week!!

This year we are holding the AW around World Book Day (23rd April) in honour of Hana's passionate, long-lasting love for books!

Hana is talented at a great number of things, but is passionate about just a few. One is music - the other is reading. It was originally a hobby her parents introduced her to, to gain an advantage as a noblewoman, but Hana grew to love it far beyond what her parents expected. Her fondness for Jane Bennett in Pride and Prejudice, her delightful rebellions in secretly reading Wuthering Heights and manhuas, her adorable habit of leaving sweet notes behind, between the pages of a library book. Her love for books has deep and wonderful, and allowed her a window into worlds she didn't even realize existed!

But books and reading aren't our only themes for this AW! Take a look at our theme list for what we plan to do for each day:

Now, I liked season 2, but this is still SO good. After the notpocalypse, Aziraphale and Crowley start a detective agency investigating supernatural happenings together. New characters include Raphael (who totally missed the apocalypse haha whoops), and a big spooky dog (whomst I adore). Note that while this fic stands just fine on its own, there is an unfinished sequel that imo doesn't leave off anywhere stressful.

After realizing they might need their own corporations to heal themselves now that they're not working for heaven and hell, Aziraphale and Crowley turn on all their bodily functions. All of them. What could be a silly premise is played out very satisfyingly, the actual biology of hormones at play here is fascinating. (this is not really at all related but: has anyone else read Peeps by Scott Westerfeld? Because the format reminded me of this in that it did a similar thing of playing straight the concept of "what could cause vampires to be real" that drew on inspiration from real life parasites interspersed between the chapters. I dig it. Anyway!)

Just curious on your stance regarding separating art from the artist, obviously celebrity culture is harmful, but do you think it’s inherently wrong to consume the work of a bad person? Mostly because of the fact that it benefits them financially. Just wondering what your thoughts were on that, sorry if you’ve spoken on it before and I missed it!

i separate the the art from the artist in most cases. there have been a few times where something was so putrid and unavoidable (i’m barely on social media and very rarely get the scoop on celebrity drama) that it ruins the taste for me and i drop it completely but i don’t have any examples on hand for you.

i separate myself from celebrity culture and idolization because i don’t care about these people personally, and i may partake in fandom culture but only to interact with other fans. i have no interest in talking to the celebrity themselves with the exception of kevin conroy, kurtis conner, and in some very small way hayden christensen whom i met because i was devastated over missing the chance to meet kevin conroy. but if somehow, those people showed me that i should not support them i wouldn’t go thru the trouble of meeting them because i would no longer like them as people even if i’d still watch batman, and star wars. but no matter how much i liked them, i would never put that interest above their victims if they had them.

in a capitalist society, you’ve been trained (and this is an important tool, don’t let people tell you different) that the most important resource you have and can give is monetary. so when you boycott things, it has nothing to do on whether or not you like a product, and everything to do with whether or not you want to support that corporation. the problem is that nothing is perfect, so you have to pick and choose and you cannot hurt yourself over the fact you can’t boycott everything. i’m always boycotting something, i’m boycotting all day every day, i don’t give my money to shit that i can live without. i don’t care about material things, so it makes no difference to me. i only buy second hand bcos dont care about style trends or big clothing brands. i boycott food places even if im craving wendy’s or mcdonald’s or chick-fil-a and its cheap easy or the only thing i’ll eat.

but i don’t really boycott artists. songs, movies, tv shows, games, whatever. i watch all my faves and listen to all my faves. celebrity culture is harder for me to follow than corporate culture so im more in the know on what corporations to avoid, but less so about what celebrities put out my fave songs. i don’t think that makes me a bad person just the same as i don’t think people are bad if they can’t boycott all my stuff i boycott. like amazon or walmart or meta or certain fast food places or anything else i listed.

you’ve got to do what you can and not beat yourself up about what you can’t or don’t. just try to be better. what does make you a bad person is putting your own selfish desires of parasocially dick riding a celebrity so hard that you condemn their victims that come forward.
