i’ve been doing a riptide rewatch with a friend of mine in college whose watching for the first time and,, we just finished ep 53 the other day and decided to pause to watch humble beginnings and so we finished and im just,,, im just thinking about how utterly giddy and childish (/pos) chip acts in it. hes so extremely immature but having a blast and im thinking about how featherbrooke was likely one of the first places he landed after fleeing skullslice. how he went from such a traumatic event, hiding that pain, and instantly turning back into that small kid again aboard the ship full of energy. i cant stop thinking about how its probably the first time he felt happy in ages, able to finally reiterate stories from the black rose once more without being shut down by price or the other gang members. just how absolutely eager he is to talk about them after likely having to be quiet for so long and now having people listen, even if theyre doubting him. after having to hide that part of him for so long, he gets to embrace it to people, especially to jay who knew drey. chip jrwi you make me miserable

Chip plays the fiddle. he's self taught, found an old thrown away fiddle back on skullslice and privately fixed it and learned how to play. it's one of the few things he brought with him when he left

Jay is sorta tanned but the sun mostly just makes her freckles more visible. the tops of her shoulders, arms and nose are always sunburned

Chip has two pins and small feathers on his hat, one fish pin for Gil and a small bird pin for Jay along with a teal and orange feather for both of them. Jay's added two small feathers to her hair tie attached with beads, a red one and turquoise one that dangle opposite to the bluejay feathers. Gillion made a tailet with sea stones attached & hanging from it, one a primarily brown ocean jasper with secondary red spots and stripes, the other a lime green peridot with yellow undertones [i have a whole separate post for the tailets]

Ava's hair was very straight compared to Jay's pretty wild curls. Ava took after the Ferins, all their hair being pin straight, while Jay took after their mother's side of the family, all their hair ranging from curly to wavy. Ava had slight waves but straightened any of them out so it seemed pin straight as well. Jay straightened her hair since she was young to be more like Ava, but she stopped when she left with Chip, mostly because she had to. her hair's gotten much frizzier because of the salty air and humidity

just Chip bringing this straight-haired girl onto his crew and he wakes up like two mornings later to Jay with the frizziest hair you can imagine almost covering her face. like a living fuzzball. he laughs at her for it but he likes it way better like this. he laughs even harder when she gets so annoyed with him that her face goes red

Jay embracing and enjoying her hair is so special and important to me. having that bluejay feather hair tie from her mom that she uses to put it up and away on hot days/nights, for flying practice, when she's artificing. Ollie braiding some of it so they can match. she doesn't have any products for it on the ship and just lets it be wild, in stark contrast to how it's been for the rest of her life. when she comes back to featherbrook with Gil & Chip, her mom sees her hair and is just so happy that Jay's letting herself be herself. May gives her some things to take care of it before they go and Jay rations that shit on the ship so she has it for as long as possible

Jay and Ollie matching braids. braid buddies !! Jay fixes her braid everyday in the black sea. she fidgets with it and often keeps it draped over her shoulder to display it. Ollie fidgets with his too, sometimes chews on it while he draws. he brags to the other kids in zero about matching with one of the pirates that saved the town[along with all his adventures with them ofc]

Gillion's gills are on his sides, not his neck. His shirt/wetsuit or whatever [what does he wear lmao] has openings over them so he can breathe easier. when he first got to the oversea he would sometimes forget to close them and breathe through his mouth/nose so he would choke a bit. he's gotten better at the switch, it's much more subconscious now

Gil never really had a favourite colour before. he liked blue and green, but those were just the most common colours he saw in the undersea. he liked purple, but it wasn't his favourite. not part of his training to think about something so insignificant. Gillion with no favourite colour and a lost sense of purpose floating to the surface. Gillion being approached and pulled out of the water by Chip. Gillion gaining his favourite colour, the same as the eyes that gave him purpose again. a pirate now. a hero again.

when Chip smokes weed it's very much a coin flip of whether it's a good or bad trip, so he only smokes every once in a while. he tends to forget about his bad trips by the time another opportunity to smoke comes up again so he's never apprehensive about it, usually the most enthusiastic of the crew. his bad trips are bad, it really triggers his ptsd and it almost always starts with him dissociating. sometimes it stops there, but often escalates to flashbacks and breakdowns

albatrio sharing clothes <3 Jay in Chip's coat, a bit smaller on her bc of their height & size difference. Chip on hot days wearing one of Jay's tank tops, Gil and Chip swapping pants. Gil loses his hair tie and uses Chip's sash to tie his hair up for the day

Jay's wings are big and blue and eagle shaped. she gets the bird tail feathers when they come out as well

Chip's tattoos heat up according to his mood. sometimes when he and Gillion touch it creates steam from the point of contact. albatrio cuddle piles sometimes end with all three of them covered in condensation. Jay's hair is always fucked up afterwards but she doesn't get too annoyed by it [usually] cuz she knows it's just bc chip loves them

William got a nose bridge piercing. black ball on one side, tiny wisp design on the other

Vyncent has a tail. his ears move like cat ears, eg. pressing close to his head when he yawns, twitching towards random noises he hears, etc.

Dakota is short, probably like 5'7. Vynce is 5'11. William & Ashe are both 6ft tall. Dakota still likes to pick all of them up

PD boys have karaoke nights. Dakota almost always raps and usually songs from Harlem's soundcloud. William sings midwest emo like Car Seat Headrest, Modern Baseball, Front Bottoms and he for sure does the voice. he doesn't realize but everyone else does. Ashe of course sings emo, MCR, FOB, Simple Plan, etc. Vynce does a mix of genres but leans towards country more often than not. Dakota does adlibs the whole time for everyone, and they all do adlibs for him while he raps

William gets so excited when someone randomly mentions something he enjoys. he gets almost flustered and feels like he's gonna explode for a second until he says something. he always sounds casual [as awkward as he usually does], but he always gets a bit embarrassed afterwards because he feels like he said it weird [he's so me fr]

this isn't a new take but genderqueer he/they/she Ashe Winters. real to me

Vyncent is a pretty good artist. didn't practice much in Fauna, he was usually hunting or helping his parents out, but he got to draw a lot more after coming to Prime. all of his schoolbooks are filled with doodles & art. in highschool it was only doodles but in college they're mostly kept in the margins now

Ashe has Mark's old jacket after leaving for college. it's definitely a comfort item, Mark gave it to them as one of his many "leaving the nest" gifts. she tops every outfit with it. he only doesn't wear it when it starts getting too warm out

Vyncent runs cold, obviously so does Will. Ashe runs warm. Dakota also runs warm but mostly because he is always moving

Vynce is aroace to me. love that little guy i hope he's out there finding himself

Ms G makes star shaped foods just for fun. waffles, pancakes, cookies, anything she can make star shaped she will at least once. she likes to bring them to W.A.T.C.H. and share them. everyone loves it. [she used to do the same for her students and it was like her class's version of a pizza party]

Ms G still has her old roller derby fit. she's definitely broken it out for Halloween or something during her teaching days

Rand and his father started butting heads when he was like 12, but after Rachel went missing they argued way more and actively disliked each other. his mom fussed and worried over him way more after Rachel went missing because he was her only child left

Rand didn't cry at Rachel's funeral. he smoked some weed beforehand to try and numb himself but it didn't really work. he sat in the church angrily the whole time, trying to keep the scowl off his face as he stared at the picture of Rachel his mom had chosen. he wrinkled his one pant leg by clutching it in his fist the whole time. the only reason he didn't storm out was because his mom was next to him, clutching his arm and basically sobbing leaning against his side. he knows why he acted and felt that way, but he still feels like shit about it. it's hard not to

Rand is a car guy that knows nothing about cars. vaguely knows the model of his own, can remember the really popular ones he's seen while skimming magazines, but knows nothing else. when his car doesn't start he gets out, opens the hood, and smacks the engine with a wrench he keeps in the glove box. it's worked for him so far, if it ain't broke don't fix it

Rand is an angry crier

Rand's necklace is a craft Rachel made for him. he wore it for a while after she gave it to him, then it sat on his dresser. he started wearing it again after she went missing and never takes it off now

Kian is a cat guy. dude loves cats so much. he doesn't have one but they're drawn to him and he has treats in his car for any strays

Kian's been dyeing/bleaching his hair since he was a teen. did it once when he was bored and just never stopped. never does his roots to give it a bit of a grown out look

Kian wears heels for sure. he's pretty average height but his heels make him the same height as Rolan

Rolan didn’t tell Rand he was leaving Galloway until the very last minute which caused the fight that ended up being their goodbye

thinking about jay and kira. because they were close. likely still were close after ava's death. and then one day kira showed up in featherbrooke and jay was...gone. may said she'd run off with a pirate boy. what did kira feel? betrayal, of course. but also... disappointment? anger? confusion? and kira doesn't seem like the most pro-navy captain we've met. so what if they'd been planning to run off together. and kira showed up one day to find out jay threw all those plans away for a pirate she'd just met

thinking about my wife (jrwi riptide) and do we know how Gillion got to the southern sea? because the Trench is in the northern sea, and the only way to get from the northern sea to the southern sea is through Allport… like he couldn’t have swam there… so how did he get to the southern sea?? like we start the campaign in Canella after Chip and Jay were in Featherbrook, so it’s reasonable to assume that they picked up Gillion inberween those two islands… but when?? like how did Gillion end up floating around the southern sea when he came from the north???

do you think on the morning they got to featherbrook chip watched the sun rise but only through the light glowing from behind gillion's head? do you think he couldn't tear his eyes away, not just out of concern, but because of the fact that despite the fact he was dying, gillion was still one of the most beautiful people he'd ever met?

the sun shining like a halo through his curls, catching the glimmers of his shinier scales, making his eyes shine just a bit brighter. he may have had barely any magic left in him. he was far from channeling anything. he was nearly on his deathbed, but it somehow was the most divine chip had ever seen him.

So we know that the Navy has different pins for RAFT soldiers for rank or if they’ve died at sea as of episode #61 (timestamp: 1:24:42). Jay has Ava’s pin given to soldiers who’ve died at sea, so what happened to Ava’s pin from when she was still in active duty? Was she buried with it? Is it still on Featherbrook? Did somebody take it?

How much time have passed since the beginning of Riptide? (up to ep. 115)

The blorbos have been together for ages, it seems like. And they have been, for years for us, but how long exactly has it been for them? Wanna find out?

So ages ago, @glo-katt84 suggested that it would be cool to count the exact amount of days that passed ever since the beginning of the adventure. And I agreed! So for a while now, alongside other data you may know me for counting I also have been recording a detailed log that describes each day briefly and adds it to the toll. I'm gonna very excitedly compress all this data now and put it in numbers, and have a lot of fun with it, so I hope you guys are enjoying it as much as I do!

But first, few clarifications on how I was counting it all:

A single day counts to me as from one morning to another. So it must include a whole day and the long rest, unless they don't sleep, in which case the day ends when Grizzly says: "The new day/morning comes". Or something similar to that.

There are exactly three instances in which Grizzly simplified a certain period as "few days of travel,"/ "few days", both very early on. Aside from that everything else has been remarkably clear, which I'm very impressed by! For these three times however, I decided to count each period as 3 days. Not long enough to be a week, but somewhere in the middle, which is as accurate to "few days" as I can get in this case.

Since everything in the campaign has been counted from the Mana's perspective, the time they spent in Feywilde is counted this way as well. Even if for them it was like a day or two max, their own world did not stop for them. To most, the captains were gone for two weeks, and counting everything in Mana time, then switching to Feywilde time and then back to Mana time would simply create a mess and provide you with genuinely inaccurate number. So we stick by Mana rules. Also including Feywilde time is downright impossible casue they literally spent half of their day in Feywilde and then the other half of the same day in Mana, which creates a whole different clusterfuck of confusion. So Mana time only, trust me. Trying to break down this shit in any other way will make your head hurt.

Alright, so without further ado, the three Riptide captains spent together:

1 day at Zero, half of which already on Loffinlot

15 days on Loffinlot

3 (rough assumption, described as few days) in the Royal Blue Casino

2 days on Desire Island

4 days in Joaldo

3 days in Edison Kingdom

1 day at Duke's

3 days at the B.L.O.C.K

3 days in Allport (first time)

2 days at Noctis

1 day in Liquidis

14 days in the Feywilde (Mana time)

1 day in Allport (second time)

1 day at Zero (before Gillion needs to be emergency Featherbrooked)

1 day at Featherbrook

3 days at Zero (post dying fish crisis)

2 days in Onowa Country

1 day in Promised Bastion (and sea)

1 day (for now and not a full day yet) at the Hole in the Sea

63 days in total on the open sea

So there you have it! Of course, you gotta add a couple of days of Chip and Jay sailing on their own, but from the moment the main three got together, it has been, as exactly as I can feasibly estimate, about 125 days

This constitutes of 62 days spent in various differnet locations and 63 days spent on the sea alone.

This would also make about 4 months of travelling together. And hopefully, many more as the story progresses and comes back after the hiatus.

I wonder if when Jay Ferin was a little girl she wanted to be a navy soldier like her big sister. I wonder if her father wanted her to be one too, to continue their family’s legacy.

I wonder if that ever changed, if when she lost her sister she wanted to join the navy to take down those pirates that killed her, or alternatively she took the warning of Ava’s death as a call not to follow her footsteps. I wonder if her joining the navy was the last thing her father wanted anymore.

I wonder how long it took for Jay to notice the Navy’s faults. I wonder when she and Kira promised to change it from the inside.

I wonder if Kira looked up to Ava too, if she was almost their third sister when they were younger. I wonder if when Ava died, Kira could see Jay changing. I wonder if they talked as much as they would have as little girls leading up to Jay joining Chip.

I wonder if Kira training to be a Captain put distance between them, if Jay was afraid she’d lose her too. I wonder if they fought about the good of the navy, Kira believing they could change while Jay slowly lost faith in them.

I wonder if Jay has the heart to resent the Navy even now, even knowing they may be responsible for Ava’s death despite all she’s been told. Maybe she regrets not becoming a captain like Kira, instead having to justify her new life to her own family.

I wonder if Jay wishes she’d stayed with her mother to be there for her as her health declined. I wonder if she considered leaving Chip and Gillion once she found out, even now she’s tied to her crew.

I wonder if Jay had left with the Navy (like Condi considered leading her to do), if she would’ve joined them. If she would’ve fought beside Kira and her father and crossed paths with Gillion and Chip again. I wonder if she’d be unable to pick sides again, or if she’d be so stuck in place she couldn’t go back.

I wonder if Ava ever snuck off to meet Lizzie in Featherbrook, if Jay might’ve noticed a slight giddiness as she disappeared to a quieter side of the island.

I wonder if Jay hates Lizzie or not now, if she’s upset with her for not telling her about her relationship with her sister, but also Ava for not telling her about Lizzie. I wonder if she hates her for loving her sister and keeping her away from home longer.

Jay is such a cool underrated character I need to THINK ABOUT HER MORE!!!

listening to ep 100 of riptide and thinking about the parallels of the encounters with jay’s dad

in their first encounter, at the block, jayson ferin (grizzly, man, i’m sorry but why does it have to be spelled that way) knows exactly what to say to intimidate jay. he ridicules her choice to become a pirate, insults her friends. but he also shames her for having left featherbrook island. for “leaving her mother all by her lonesome.” jay’s response is that her mother can handle herself, though her father continues on, speaking at her rather than to her.

the majority of the conversation, jay pleads more than argues. she doesn’t need to prove him wrong. she just needs to convince him to let her friends live. she doesn’t move to attack or defend, just walks up to her dad, head down, and puts her fist on his chest. she immediately surrenders. says she’ll return home, do what he says, begging him to let the others go.

this doesn’t pan out of course. gillion acts, fights against jayson for the sake of his friend, for her freedom. but jay’s internal conflict, the secret she’s spent all this time lying about, her genuine care for her friends but her want to somehow appease her father, to find out what happened to ava. there’s uncertainty. and jayson sees this, and uses it to punish them. by forcing her to punish them. there’s nothing else she can do.

she shoots gillion in the chest.

in episode 100, as the crew has just left zero, they’re ambushed by the navy. as jay’s father lands on their ship to arrest them, something is different. jay has committed to her choice, to her co-captains and her crew. jay speaks against him.

“you shouldn’t be here.”

jayson ferin doesn’t know his wife is sick, that her magic is leaving her. jay herself has only just found out, but it makes sense that she hasn’t been able to return home as a wanted pirate. jayson doesn’t have that same excuse, yet he’s been absent for years. he doesn’t visit home often, not even before jay left to be a pirate.

when her father asks why, jay says “of course you wouldn’t know. always blind to everything around you, especially your family.”

he speaks as if he’s looking past her, trying to separate the person he sees from the daughter he raised. trying not to think about how much she looks like ava.

“my family would never forsake their duty on some immature whim of emotion. i see no family-“

jay interrupts him. “yeah? and what about mom? you ever once think to look over her? check in on her maybe?”

and jayson’s response is what really stands out to me.

“my wife can take care of herself. how dare you use her to provoke me. is this how far you have fallen?”

he’s contradicting his words in the block. not that he really meant what he said, as he didn’t truly care about jay leaving her mother. he cared about controlling the situation, and his wife was an easy card to play to make jay feel guilty.

as jay challenges her father, he assumes she’s trying to play the same game. weaponize their remaining family to gain control. she isn’t.

“when was the last time you saw her?”

jayson ferin is silent.

“i saw her a week ago. she’s very sick, dad.”

he doesn’t seem to even consider that she’s telling the truth. skirting around the subject to insult jay’s character before addressing it.

“try to trick me all you want. but it will not be me who dies a fool. and do not dare use my wife to bargain.”

“that’s just like you, dad. just like you to think i’d use mom as a bargaining chip and not tell you out of pure concern for her. i would’ve stayed and helped. but, y’know, you have so much navy on the island no i couldn’t even do that for mom.”

there’s such a contrast in how jay holds her self during the block and now. her father never allowed her to be her own person, wouldn’t have acknowledged it even if she’d tried to do so. and she knew that in the block, knew it long before she left featherbrook. it may have been easier had she gone back home with jayson after the block, but it would have been a betrayal. not just to her crew, but herself. she knows better now. knows what she wants and what she’s worth.

“so you know what? you continue to do your thing. be a bad husband, be a bad father, i don’t care. right now? i’m gonna get you off my ship.”

and she shoots at him.

The Ferin’s Have a Talk - JRWI

May lays in the backroom, in her bedroom healing from using her magic for gillion. Jay sits at her feet rubbing her knuckles with her thumb, looking out the window to the ocean of Featherbrook. Wondering around the room, finding a family album and looking through it. Finding multiple photos of Ava. Her birth. First day of school. Getting her uniform for the first time.. and then her death certificate. The older woman lets out a groan rubbing her eyes. Jay looks over to her mother and stands up, placing the album on the bedside table, grabbing her mom’s arm and rubbing it. “How are you doing, mum?” Jay talks in a low voice. A look of nervousness over her face. May grabs Jay’s hand and speaks in her normal voice “I’m okay, JJ. Don’t worry..” she smiles and then releases Jay’s hand. Jay sits back down on her bed and rubs her leg. “Thank you.” she thanks her mom for helping her save Gillion. Jay still speaks softly whispering. “Anything for you JJ..” the older woman examines her daughter, the sun burn mark on her left eye, a scar across her nose, a deep gash under her right eye, and multiple of little red stab marks across her arms. The new outfit. Her googles from before she left now being cracked from her adventures, her bright red hair puffy & curly just as before half of it being up with the underside shaved. Her skin was darkened from the time in the sun. Her neck holds beads/rock representing her co-captains colors, a hand-made pearl necklace by the fish man sitting unconscious on the table in the bar outside. A white tang top dirtied by oil and grime from her projects on the boat. Dark blue, magical wings swoop down her arms to the ends of her elbow. A tight brown corset with a dark brown leather crossbow holster, empty leaving it in the house back on Zero. Her navy uniform jacket tighted around her waist with more pearls. Fading into her puffy light brown pants and black combat boots. “looks like you’ve been having some fun JJ..” the mother grabs her face and rubs her cheek back and forth. Caressing the sun shaped scar that spread from the top of her hairline to the beginnings of her right cheek. Still red & swelling definitely a permanent scar from the looks of it. “this one seems… newer.” May makes eye contact with her, with a glare. Jay looks uncomfortable and averts her gaze. Knowing that glare. A small chuckle comes out before she says “not really..” placing her own hand on top of her mothers. “It looks like… it was burnt into your face…?“ Jay begins to sweat, not wanting to tell her mother the bazar explaination of how it happened. How does she explain to her mom she had jumped into the sun? How does she explain how painful it was to receive it? Why did Drey have the same dream? How does she-..! “JJ..?” Jay snaps back. Her mother looks even more concerned that before, watching her daughter zone out at the thought of an explanation. Ms. Ferin lets out a sigh. “I understand, JJ.. wanting to just have fun with your friends. Out on the sea, by yourself.. I know you’re an adult.-“ Jay groans. “BBUTTT-“ she says while tugging on her daughters cheek in her motherly tone Jay had heard her entire life.. “just- be safe please.. I don’t need another letter.” A sorrow expression on both of their faces. May continues- “I trust, Chip and Gillion I really do..” Jay interrupts with a laugh. “Maybe you shouldn’t.” May makes a expression that can only be explained as motherly anger. “Just… are they helping you stay safe?” She smiles remembering all the times she had saved them, and the first time she had left the tavern. The freeing feeling of being on the boat for the first time. Chip’s bizarre stories as they sailed. Finding a humanoid fish man nearly dead.. and taking on the ship. Jay smiles softly. “Yeah.. they are, mama.” We leave the scene of May leaning up and kissing the top of Jay’s head leaving a lipstick kiss on it. Before laying down and holding Jay’s hand. “I missed you Jay-Jay..”

We zoom out the window and turn to see the water quietly flowing onto the beach and out pushing the small wood rowboat the pirates came from. As a wet, soggy, raccoon scurries away into the forest until needed again.
