Eureka Investigator OC - Briar Thorne

I decided to redesign an old OC into an Investigator for @anim-ttrpgs's flagship TTRPG, Eureka. Lot's of the fun details are included in this image, but if you wanna know more about her look under the cut! (There will also be some blank copies of this character card template if you wanna make your own Eureka Character in it....)

As far as Investigator Concepts go, Briar DEFINITELY pushes at the edges of what is typically tonally acceptable for a game set in Eureka's assumed setting. But I had fun making her, regardless - and the catgirl character type comes from the tonally shifted Fanservice Files, anyhoot.

Briar Thorne - Character Concept

A catgirl, abandoned at birth, taken in by fairies. She’s a character straight out of a fairytale stuck living her mundanity-ever-after banished to the human world.

Briar was abandoned in “the woods” at an age too young to remember. The fairies claim to have nothing to do with her feline features. Perhaps her whole family were cat-people, or maybe she was some sort of freak and that’s why she was abandoned. Likely, she will never know. She was found by a group of little folk who took her under their wing(pardon the pun) and into their world. Namely, a garden fairy named Tuft and a few of his friends. Her adopted Fae family was of lower stratum as far as the incomprehensible social structure of fairyland was concerned. Which unfortunately left Briar in the position of ugliest duckling imaginable.

Despite the inherent danger of her life, she lived a happy enough childhood. Galavanting through the woods with her fairy friends, and picking fights with those fairies of middling standing who tried to bully her and hers. Through the course of her life she made a point of becoming versed in the more mundane methods of punishing disrespect. Come preadolescence, she found herself increasingly bumping against her child-like caretakers total lack of emotional intelligence. In her teen years she began to travel back and forth between Fairyland and visiting the Human World with Tuft. Finding herself to be a stranger in both. In Fairyland she was an outcast, but she was at least an outcast on a playing field she knew well. The Human World on the other hand seemed more alien to her each time she visited, and it seemed she stuck out just as badly there.

Following a rather dramatic adolescent fallout with Tuft, she ended up the court assassin for a particularly unseemly (or if you’d rather, unseelie) family of fairy royalty. At age 22, after failing to secure what was to be the most important kill of her career she ended up banished, spirited away to the human world forever more. Now she’s stuck in a world she barely understands, with a set of skills she has no inkling of how to market. She has been living out of a tent in the woods and hunting for sustenance. She is all too aware she can’t keep dodging the game wardens and coasting by on her accrued fairy wealth of slightly esoteric value forever.

Truths

I also made trait-esque descriptions for each of her truths. I really enjoyed the process and wholeheartedly recommend:

If You Want Something Done Right: Trust Nobody

Mostly self explanatory. This truth is being acted on anytime Briar takes matters into her own hands, instead of relying on her fellow Investigators or otherwise makes it clear she doesn’t ACTUALLY trust the people she’s working with.

Disrespect is Dangerous

Having been raised by fairies, Briar quickly learned that tolerating disrespect will only return dividends of further disrespect. Having no magical abilities at her disposal to punish such trifling, she quickly found more traditionally violent ways of ensuring her own safety. Any time Briar takes actions to punish or otherwise discourage a perceived slight, she is Acting On this truth.

Yarn Spinner

Briar, while gifted in deceit, will never opt for a white lie when pointlessly convoluted deception will do. Briar is acting on this truth anytime she is making up a needlessly complicated story to trick or otherwise mislead someone.

Soft-Spot for Kids

Briar is a self interested cut-throat only out for herself… right up until the moment a kid starts crying. She just can’t take it okay? She knows all too well how it feels to be a child in peril, to cry despite the certainty no adult is coming to help you. Anytime Briar acts against her best interests on behalf of a child, she’s acting on this truth.

I’m the Villain

At this point in her life, Briar is more or less married to the idea that she is a bad person. On some level believing it will hurt her less if she owns it. She’s a liar, she’s a killer, she’s self-interested, and according to her that’s never going to change. Anytime Briar pushes people away, does the hard thing nobody else is willing to do, or otherwise knowingly paints herself to be the villain she is acting on this truth.

Let's talk metaphors in regards to my ocs

As you might know, in regards to her tail, Embla emotes a lot like a cat. She will lash her tail when annoyed, for instance.

At a face level, this was mainly inspired by Toothless' catlike mannerisms in HTTYD. A lot of animals in fiction will act like dogs no matter what, and Toothless was a fresh change of pace, and I wanted to do something similar

But I like overanalyzing too, so now this little quirk in Embla's mannerisms is a metaphor.

In Scandinavian folklore, most signs point to trolls not even using their tails for body language at all. But a lot of fae happen to be neurodivergent coded (why do so many sources mention that fairies physically cannot lie? It's nd coding), and changelings doubly so.

You know where this is going, it's the autistic cat metaphor. I like to describe my experiences with autism as being a cat living in a family that has never had a cat before, only dogs. Therefore, some of my instinctive mannerisms are misinterpreted, which leads to social fallout. Even though I have no less love to give than anyone else, people might think I'm heartless just because I show affection differently.

When Embla puts up her human facade, she's hard to read because she comes off as pretty stoic. It's not that she doesn't show her feelings outward, she just does it in a different way, a way that is exciplitly non human. She still has humanity, mind you. But when she doesn't have to hide her fae origins, you can read her much easier through her feline-inspired body language. People who have never seen Embla's fae side might even describe her as an ice queen, but those who know how to read her know Embla has emotions and she expresses them clearly, she just does it in her own way.

Similarily, a real life autistic person may come across as emotionless to an allistic person if they don't know how the former expresses emotion, but the autistic person has no less emotions or love to give, they just show it differently

AH large description ahead, under the cut!

Holy crap that's a ton of sketches OTL These aren't even in any order I just, squeezed them in the thing where they would fit ._. Uhh hERE WE GO: left to right, top to bottom. Hopefully brief explanations help x_X #1 A concept of what Annabelle and Kelly's (her roommate and friend) bedroom might look like. I really don't know what made me sketch it, I think I was just trying to help myself envision it or something. #2 The coloured one- sort of greenish blue and has the crayon-like outline, was an old project for school: design a hostile alien species. I actually did quite a bit of backstory for them and stuff but yeah I didn't write it down so half of it's lost lol. Anywho, I also added a possible weapon they might have used. #3 The small, smooth-outlined sketch above the alien is a headshot of Krauss: Cobalt549's Dragon Age: Inquisition Qunari. I really love how he looks in game and can't stop trying to draw him and his magnificent horns. #4 A small chibi of Brooklyn, mostly for color palette purposes tbh. Done on Clip Art, actually. #5 Weird headshot of a cat/feline. I was practicing fur and just didn't want to edit it after that stage. #6 Basic concept of what Brooklyn's late husband, whom has no name atm that I'm aware of. I actually kinda like it, so there might not be many edits to him xP #7 A small profile headshot I did a while back, dunno who it's supposed to be tbh. Had no motivation to finish it or nothin, plus I liked the sketchy hair. #8 (To the right of alien dude's foot) Cobalt549's design of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3's Spectre. C: #9 A quick little sketchy thing of Brooklyn staring off into the beyond as usual. #10 Small little sketchie of Crowley and Annabelle being so far out of character it's unbelievable. I.. I really messed up their faces smh #11 (all five animal headshots) Concept of my story Claws That Kill's main characters. Or well, some of them are secondary I guess. Ye, I'm still working on that o3o;; #12 (the dark-lit mouth and cat) Dimmed color palette of Claw for that Coma Baby PMV MAP Part I did recently. Not his actual colors, just a sort of thing for his scars and to keep things consistent. #13 Another dimmed color palette, this time of Dogfang (plus a mouth), again for the Coma Baby thing as stated above. #14 (to the bottom right of the Claws That Kill headshots) Another Crowley and Annabelle sketch, slightly more accurate to their... Personalities and such?? I hope lol. #15 Full body of Krauss, Cobalt's DA;I character. Gosh I love that dude so much. #16 Another old school project to create a dinosaur. I think my subconscious was thinking "Bearded Dragon". #17 Three characters I adopted from Cobalt ages ago, (Led, Gry-Gry, and Jester(?) ), in a more recent style. #18 (top right of the abovely mentioned sketch) A very very quick doodle of Krauss and Iron Bull (Dragon Age: Inquisition) that I found a little funny. #19 (bottom right of one above the above mentioned sketch) Idk what I was doing, I think explaining clouds at night or something, but a night sky that I didn't wanna delete xD #20 A smoking Deacon (Fallout 4) who's sunglasses aren't yet colored. I used references for this one of course. #21 Quick Leafpool sketch + color for that PMV MAP I did, Bitter and the Sweetness. #22 (top right of Leafpool) A dragon headshot, remake of an old drawing I did, but this time it's Leo. #23 (bottom right of Leafpool) Nick Valentine (Fallout 4) attempt o3o;; #24 Another Bitter and the Sweetness MAP reference, this one of Mothwing. #25 Concept of what my dragon character Leo's body anatomy would be like #26 An old one this, Ryamond Reddington from The Blacklist.
