tell me more about locus’ sisters 😈

Bro you don't even know the can of worms you've opened. So over the years i have been tormented by that fuck ass "and one wanted warmth" tweet from miles and since then i have been stewing in who locus could have in his personal life outside of Felix and Siris. I couldn't imagine any real familial connections, I liked the idea of Locus being very alienated from family for whatever reason and that's kind of where the idea for both his sisters came from. That and Grif asking Locus if he had any siblings.

Also... Something about Locus just tells me this is a man who was forced to play dress up as a kid. Bro was in the trenches long before the war.

I guess I'll start with his older sister, I suck at naming characters but I've just been calling her Carmen. I mentioned that their mom had passed when Sam was quite young and their dad took things over from there. It would have been really easy for Carm to become mom part 2, especially being so much older than the other two kids, except for the fact that this girl does not have a nurturing bone in her body. She was always quite critical and I would say pretty overly combative with their dad and Sam. She took on a lot of responsibility not just in the house but I think in whatever community they were a part of whether it for the war effort or not. She bought in hard to the "everyone pulls their weight" attitude and if she felt Sam wasn't she'd be quick to tell him. It's not that she hated either of her siblings, it's more so that she had been dealt quite a shitty hand in life. Misery loves company I guess. She just redirected all of the grief and stress of growing up during the war back onto the people she had authority over.

As for the younger sister, I never settIed on a good name but I've been using Sophia. I mentioned in the tags that she was kind a cry baby. She was the baby of the family and got a lot of princess treatment because of it from their dad. I think it would be easy for Sam or Carm to resent this kind of treatment but I honestly kind of like the idea that they sort of bought into it as well. Carm because she knew she'd get in trouble otherwise, and Sam because he wanted to emulate his dad. I think from the start Sam had it in his head that it was his job to look out for Sophia, and Sophia spent a lot of time following Sam around even when he wanted to be alone. Sophia would have for sure made sure he sat his ass down for her tea parties. I think on a deeper level besides her just being seen as sensitive, her being a particularly emotionally expressive/in tune kid in a house full of more repressed family would have been pretty tough. I think Sam has always had difficulty handling people when their sad, he can handle Carm or his dad's anger but doesn't know what to do with himself if Sophie is crying.

As far as their adult life goes, I actually think that Sophie ends up passing very young during a Covenant attack. It's things like this that make me worried my writing is too melodramatic lol but she was very much inspired by Setsuko from Grave of the Fireflies. After that their dad spiraled too far to be helped, just completely checked out mentally, and Carm and Sam were left to fend for themselves. Where Sam used to think his dad was the strongest dude in the galaxy, he was kind of just left disappointed and alone in the end. Rather than learning how to rely on each other, they only got worse until Sam joined or was drafted into the military. I've gone back and forth as to whether or not Carm enlisted as well. If she had this would have left Sam in his teen years in a painfully quiet house with a completely checked out father.

I think if she did she would have had a very successful career and after the war was able to go into some kind of legal position still connected to the UNSC. She is still militant but has gotten a lot of stability in her life, honestly a lot closer to what Siris is like with a fiance, a dog and everything. Whats holding me back though is the idea that I think that a huge part of Felix's manipulation was devaluing relationships with civilian friends/family that locus could have had support from "They could never understand what we went through" type of thing. that concept is genuinely one of my biggest guilty pleasures. I think Carm during the bounty era would have carried a lot of guilt and tried to make things right between her and Sam, but it may have been too late at that point and he wouldn't have been able to see her reaching back out as anything but pity after getting thrown out of the military.

I don't think they even live on the same planet anymore. but she still tried for a little while at least to see her brother.
