So, Nico Minoru's in Spider-Man Freshman Year... Let's talk about it.

About a year ago, Marvel spilled some details about the upcoming animated Spider-Man series, Spider-Man Freshman Year. There was a lot of discussion about it, what it was, what it wasn't, and whether what it is is better or worse then what people wanted it to be.

A couple weeks ago, a trademark filing indicated that the show was scheduled for Winter 2024. In an era where companies are killing announced and nearly-finished projects, I was honestly thinking the show was on thin ice... but since it seems to still exist, I want to talk about something that I feel has gotten surprisingly little discussion in all the discourse about the show: the inclusion of Nico Minoru, of the Runaways, as Peter Parker's best friend.

Now, from a Peter-centered perspective, I think this choice makes sense in a very specific way? If you flash back to the original 60s Spider-Man comics, which the show seems to be trying to invoke aesthetically from the little we've seen, Peter Parker had a female close friend who was representative of 1960s youth counter-culture: Mary Jane.

The degree to which Stan Lee's own values undercut MJ's counter-culturism is something that people could/do entire academic essays about, but suffice it to say that she was meant to appeal to the zeitgeist of the era and the character's spirit certainly got through to viewers. Like, there is a reason that she the OTP for Peter for so many people, even if Lee at the time had intended to keep the focus on Peter's more traditionally conservative romance with Gwen Stacy.

Nico Minoru slots into this classic pre-MJ-as-the-love-interest MJ role very well, in my opinion at least? In her 2000s comics, she was cast as a edgy goth social outcast who made her own clothes and did her own thing... In her 2010s MCU show, she was cast again as an outcast, but with a certain amount of doomerpilled depression that she outgrows as the show goes on... In the 2020s game Midnight Suns, Nico is still a devoted goth, but also draws from queer youth culture and has a certain semi-ironic peppiness to her (she calls the player "friendo" constantly - she's just like me fr).

So, honestly, I think picking Nico Minoru for Spider-Man's best friend is a really clever move that slots her into this historical role of the foil to Peter Parker - fun choice!

However, from a Nico-centered perspective, I have a lot of questions about what this version of the character will be like practically... The biggest one being: Why is Nico in New York? One of the core concepts of the Runaways as a team is that they are a response to the oft-asked question "Why is New York always under threat? Why are there no superheroes having to save LA?". While the West Coast Avengers do, y'know, exist, the Runaways introduces another answer to this question: Supervillains cannot operate in LA without permission of the Pride, a LA-based supervillain mafia who made a pact with a demon from Limbo and require a cut of all crime committed in the city. The titular Runaways are the children of these villains, who choose to reject their parent's lifestyle and go on the run rather then be complicit in their villainy.

So... How did Nico get in New York and end up enrolling in a New York high school? That's a big change for her and I hope the explanation is satisfying.

Nico and her team also don't usually appear as traditional costumed heroes with secret identities, at least not for prolonged periods of time. They've used several codenames and several costumes, but it's always bit a touch comedic - Nico goes by "Sister Grimm" because they decide they need nicknames to be superheroes as somewhat-cringy-teens while she later uses "The Gloom" partially at the encouragement of her girlfriend, but she's still largely just... Nico. It's worth noting that both Midnight Suns and Marvel Snap break naming conventions to call her by her first/last name instead of an alias - something Snap mostly does with big-deal characters like Jean Grey and Kitty Pryde, with even other characters more known by their real name like Emma Frost and Danielle Moonstar being called by their hero names instead...

So, I'm curious if Nico will be using her powers to fight crime and, if she is, what codename/costume she has... On top of that, I wonder if Peter Parker will know that Nico is a blood witch and if Nico will know that Peter Parker is Spider-Man - or if they mutually uncover that across the events of the series... Doctor Strange is also set to be in this show - will he be a mentor for her as a budding witch, perhaps even more then he is a mentor for Peter? There's a lot of possibilities there too.

Finally, there's the big question of Nico Minoru's queerness. Now, there's basically two lists of Marvel queers - the characters written as queer by the writers and artists at Marvel and the characters Marvel corporate have actually approved as being queer and stamped with a big rainbow stamp of approval. This is what separates your "did a gay kiss once" characters from your "paraded out every June" characters...

Nico is in the latter category and is potentially one of the most corporate-approved queer characters there are. This girl is BISEXUAL and Marvel is uncharacteristically interested in making sure you know it. She got a Pride variant cover kissing her girlfriend when Pearlmutter was still at the company. Her MCU show is full of gay kisses and has not one but TWO fantasy gay wedding sequences (it also got removed from Disney+ earlier this year, funny that).

Now, uh, America Chavez is basically the face of Sapphic Marvel in the comics and her queerness got reduced to a Pride pin in her movie, so I'm not sure if Nico's bisexuality will be acknowledged in the show given that precedent... but I sure hope it does!!! It'd be cute if Karolina pops in too, helping her girlfriend out with whatever antics she gets into... She wasn't in the initial revealed character line-up, but I could also see them waiting to reveal her and hoping to get hype specifically from shippers who haven't thought about the pairing in a few years since the Runaways TV show ended.

ANYWAY. That was a lot of thoughts, but I'm just very curious what's going to happen here... I love Nico and am eager to see her in this show, but it also just feels like such an unconventional choice... to the point where I am apparently thinking about it this hard a year later.

23. What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?

Not sure how far back into childhood I should go here, because i've literally been making up my own stories for as long as I can remember... so I think I'll go with the one that's stuck with me all the way until now! It's basically an original idea set in a dystopian future and follows a bunch of adolescents as they rise up against "the system" (yes I know that sounds awfully familiar to the ateez stans here but I had this idea back in like 2015 so if anything they stole from me-) and I did write the full story once but I'm really not happy with how it turned out, plus I want to make a bunch of changes to the story and the characters, so at one point I really hope I manage to write that whole thing again^^

(technically three people asked me about this now, so i'm very tempted to put three scenes here but.... i think the post will get way too long then ajskdfjödlask unless of course... someone asks nicely...? 👉👈 anyway, the scene is under the cut~)

“It can happen,” Yeosang assures you, while the alarm goes off, shaking the whole table as it vibrates, and Wooyoung immediately grabs it and gets up. You’re glad he’s at least being useful in that regard - otherwise you’re not sure why Yeosang brought his friend from an entirely different major along to your café date of hell.

“He insisted,” your teammate tells you upon posing your question. “Actually I don’t know why I brought him either.”

“Excuse me?!” Wooyoung exclaims in offense as he returns with your order, having heard his friend’s reply. But Yeosang is quick to wave it off.

“It’s nothing, don’t worry about it.” To your surprise his loud friend merely sits down while eyeing him with a doubtful expression, but he doesn’t say anything more to that. Finding yourself more fascinated than anything else by their dynamic, you shake your head eventually and redirect your attention to the screen in front of you. 

“I’ll send you the parts so we can go over them together,” you announce as you’re already dropping the files into your kakao chat with Yeosang, the familiar tone coming from the speakers of his laptop signaling an incoming message that tells you he received them quickly. Wooyoung leans in, nosily looking at the files his friend is opening.

“Looks good… if you ignore the formatting,” Yeosang shades, making you chuckle, and Wooyoung lets you hear a loud “Hey!”

“You didn’t do yours any better!” he teases Yeosang, attempting to pinch his side but his friend evades the attack. 

“Personal space,” he just remarks, pushing Wooyoung away with his flat palm against his cheek. Once again you find yourself fascinated by their cartoonish behaviour most of all, but you don’t comment on what just unfolded in front of your eyes. “And also, mine doesn’t look very interesting, but at least it has the correct formatting.”

“Yeah, this professor doesn’t really have an eye for aesthetics,” you add, grinning yet unhappy about the way the paper you were supposed to put together looks overly sterile. “But I guess that’s what science wants.”

“Well, the contents are what matters,” Yeosang adds, this time not defending himself when Wooyoung throws an arm around his shoulders, but you can tell he’s not happy about the pda. With curious eyes he leans in, skimming through the text on Yeosang’s screen, and you give him an annoyed sigh. You really just want to finish this damn project already, before it consumes any more of your nerves. 

“Oh. Sorry,” Wooyoung grins as he notices your distress, moving away from the computer as he straightens his back, and you’re not sure what to make of his reaction. Telling yourself to focus on the problem at hand instead of him, you begin pasting the text into one collective document, while Yeosang starts reading through everything in search of any possible errors.

“Looks good,” he eventually announces, and you agree, having joined him in proofreading everything. 

“You two sure are fast,” Wooyoung comments, and he shoots you a gaze filled with mischief.

“This is the tenth time we read through these, so…” you explain.

“I see… Yeosang here told me about how horrible the others were to work with,” the guy sitting next to your classmate continues.

“You’re also horrible to work with, and you’re not even a part of this,” Yeosang mutters under his breath, causing you to chuckle, and Wooyoung immediately complains.

not @ me putting a wall of text in here, but I'm just really proud of how the bickering between Yeosang and Wooyoung turned out here hehe plus it was a lot of fun to write too^^ this is probably still one of my fav scenes from this fic, and it doesn't even have the guy it's about in it :')

Facts sis. Tbh N.Tic themselves are a concept. I’ve made so many posts about them but they deserve it, they are improving with each comeback and all their songs are bops and I am so fucking glad I decided to check them out. •    her family has never stayed in one place for very long, though her aging parents eventually settled into a permanent residence in the us around the time she turned sixteen, not soon enough for jade to break the habit of wandering, but thankfully quick enough for her to meet the bratz girls who were just as adventurous and fun - loving as she. she's spent much of her teen life jumping from place to place wherever her interests are that moment, collecting people along the way, but to find friends was the only thing she was missing. jade has a brilliant mind, but she lacks patience and follow through. she needs guidance or she'll jump from idea to idea, job to job, whim to whim.

•    ngl, jade pretty much hated her home life. her parents were an overbearing presence in her life, her mother wanting jade to be a proper lady who also went into a profession like theirs (entirely serious and stifling when it came to creativity, doctor, politician, lawyer etc.) while jade herself wanted to check out the latest trends and go to the mall w her friends – so she turned all of her focus and energy into getting good grades in everything she wanted to do in the hopes that she could be the most successful fashion designer, then leaving town forever. 

•    like she spent 7 yrs in high school graduating w honours but she barely knew what was happening in 9/10 of her classes and sometimes she just slept through classes and then wing her exams which she miraculously did well at. it was just not a good idea to send jade to a public school at 11 after being in boarding school for the rest of her life and then never really enforce any rules :~\ she has trouble with that kind of thing.. as in making logical choices instead of saying "YEAH lets go watch american psycho and smoke weed!" skipping chemistry to do just that 

•    she loves fun and values doing what makes her happy over most things. it's hard to pin her down and she spends most of her life chasing after ideas that don't really follow any sort of conscious order, bc she’s really got that ‘i’ve got dreams and i’m gonna do everything in my power to achieve them’ personality. 

•    according to bratz canon she’s worked as literally everything ? she’s one of those insufferable people who r just. good everything ig and that’s just how it is on this bitch of an earth. jade’s been a photographer, a song - writer and bass player in a rock band (shout out to bratz rock angelz the best movie w the best soundtrack ever), a student studying fashion design, a fashion columnist, a quickly fired nanny, and many other things in between. 

•    so when she appears in toonsville she’s kind of out of it that she’s not doing something w her skills and sets up her own business which she loves ? being her own boss suits her fine (for now) because she’s got a Real Job and she's actually trying rly hard so she can fulfill her dreams !! like suck it mom nd dad haha !!!

•    jade has a lot of weird feelings TM about her body and her looks and struggles a lot with her self confidence :~( she had a shit time at school with boys saying she was too thin and she compensated by acting like she didn't like anyone at all for a while and now she thinks she isn't good enough for anyone when rly she is a cinnamon bun too good for this world too pure

Copyright - The “Real” Death of Vaporwave

Vaporwave has been called dead more times than Stan Lee, and yet still it is a popular music genre and aesthetic. Vaporwave, to someone not very heavily immersed in the culture, makes almost no sense. Vaporwave as a music and design genre is hard to define. Nonetheless it is an aesthetic style and musical movement that I adore. In simple terms vaporwave is a subgenre of chillwave, that is easy to listen to (darkvapor excepted), easy to relax to, while also being oddly nostalgic. The genre generally utilises heavy sampling and when it doesn’t it uses stylistic pastiche. These two techniques are ways that vaporwave recontextualizes older musical styles, motifs and tracks. Vaporwave is hard to describe due to many factors contributing to its aesthetic and artistic success, such as its background in internet forums and culture, the cultural impact of the tracks and styles the sampling and pastiche is taken from and the way in which the various samples are manipulated.

Vaporwave as a genre is unendingly fascinating, partly because it couldn’t exist without the internet, and because it couldn’t exist without the ability to take existing works and manipulate and re-release them. The influences vaporwave takes from plunderphonics is well documented, but I would argue is a hypothesis born mostly out of reading too far into a very simple history. While the founders of the musical style many today would call vaporwave, namely James Ferraro and his contemporaries, definitely took some kind of inspiration or at least were creating in the footsteps of plunderphonics, the subsequently popularised vaporwave genre and its corresponding design aesthetic, has more roots in internet memes and culture then any obscure experimental music genre. The use of post-ironic capitalism, post-ironic marxism, and post-ironic japanophilia is evidence enough of this relationship.

Post-irony being a very common characteristic of both mainstream and underground meme culture in which a joke or statement is made ironically, but the essence of the joke or statement still has some essence of truth or sincerity. The abundance of post-irony in the vaporwave community has led the genre to be called a meme in its own right, and its design aesthetic to be called a meme format. Memewave, and vapormeme are sub-genres of vaporwave with more layers of irony than anyone with an IQ below 400 could possibly understand.  

Vaporwave simultaneously mocks and embraces free-market capitalism. It takes songs made for capitalistic gain and essentially steals them and subsequently uses them for the basis of an entire track. The essence of remix is used, but the amount to which the new works are transformative is controversial. I will refrain from inputting my opinion until later, but it is an important  issue of debate. The idea here being that they are themselves utilising a free market ideology in order to create their works, while also mocking the system that both allows them to do this, and had created the work they are commandeering. This may sound like cognitive dissonance, but in online terms this is a very good example of post-irony, but there is another layer to this. The essence of this cognitive dissonance and post-irony, vaporwave fans find quite funny, hence why they partake of the culture and genre. They also, however, tend to unironically enjoy the music and the various image edits. The cognitive dissonance of finding the self-contradictory ideological motivations ridiculous and laughable, while also unironically loving it for those same aspects, is the very nature of internet age post-irony. The vaporwave community similarly makes fun of, while it embraces marxist criticisms of capitalism and japanophilia.

I hope this has conveyed how vaporwave and memes are heavily related, and how the culture of remix, sampling and pastiche is necessary for the genre to exist by definition. Vaporwave without the ability to take existing music and recontextualise it is just odd sounding chillwave. 

Vaporwave’s use of sampling is undoubtedly transformative, in my opinion. The act of recontextualizing someone else’s work, and changing the feeling, sound, and intention for the music to such a degree as vaporwave artists do is an artistic one. I would argue the same thing about taking someone else’s piece of art and altering it to convey a new meaning and tone, or taking a film and making an edit which alters the meaning in a different way. Memes exist solely on this one assumption, meme edits could not exist in a system that does not allow this kind of remix.

As far as I am concerned, the current state of copyright could potentially get bad enough that vaporwave could become impossible to make and distribute, even for free. EU copyright law already sets precedent for certain memes to be illegal under certain interpretations of the law. Certain vaporwave artists have had to distribute music on underground forums, bandcamp, and other free distribution services where copyright is less strictly upheld. Some artists who could plead the defense that their work is transformative have made homes of lucrative platforms such as spotify and itunes, that being artists such as 2814 and Blank Banshee, but other vaporwave artists have not made such a move. This is due to a number of reasons, some of which involve the fear for litigation.

When costly lawsuits can be filed for things as minor as similar chord progressions or even a similar function those chords play within a progression (even if no such lawsuits are successful) it is understandable that certain artists are too careful to end up with their music being too well advertised.

This fear for the loss of one’s wealth and work due to the overstepping of government regulation is, in my honest opinion, already in a shameful state. With YouTube, the EU and the US copyright regulations being too restrictive to creative freedom. An artist should not fear for any legal repercussion for any work that utilises another in any way, as long as some creative input is exerted by the second artist in order to express something new. With the tightening of copyright regulations as has recently been made by the EU parliament we could see the death of vaporwave in the future. This would be a future not devoid of creative potential, but one where the ability to express that creative potential is severely limited. It is a future I wish to avoid in entirety. Government regulation of a free market is necessary to ensure the stability of the market, but such regulation must be much looser on the creative industries, if we wish for new and innovative works to be created.

Do you write for Sombra? If you do, could you write a new member joining Talon, (the reader) and Sombra tries to be super cool in missions to impress the reader, eventually leaving little clues to ask the reader out?

Sometimes you can’t help but recall the past, but your mind has been pumped full of other thoughts by the scientists who work for Talon that you can’t remember anything but bits and pieces of the life you once lived. Your parents- you can still see their smiles, a ghost image of their proud, genuine faces in the back of your head. You can’t remember the last thing they said to you before you were kidnapped and forced to be Talon’s new lab rat.

You have nightmares. The faces of the ones you love crumbling away in the fires that the terrorists set upon the small village you lived in, the ashes that sprinkle across the dark skies, the stars that gazed upon the dead, and the moon that hid between the clouds as if in fear. You still remember the way they took you and tossed you into the back of a van as if you were nothing, you remember Stanley, who let you call him Stan; you never interacted with him beyond the occasional nod of acknowledgement and maybe a smile. He was the only saving grace in those trying times. Being the only two people left of your village formed a bond between you that almost felt familial, and he quickly became somebody you could fall back on after every test, every injection, every trial. You remember crying yourself to sleep when he stopped appearing on the bunk on top of yours.

Talon was unforgiving, and the first few experiments were the worst. They had you tied down on a cold, hard operating panel as they gave you shot after shot of what you could only assume was enhancement fluids, and you tried your hardest to stop them despite knowing that your efforts were futile. You were under their “care”, as they liked to call it, offering you words of comfort even though you knew they were nothing but bad people. Overtime you began to comply to them, no longer baring your teeth and giving them death stares when you were ushered into the testing area. Eventually they stopped binding your wrists and tying a muzzle over your mouth as well.

You no longer know much about your past, or yourself really, and the brainwashing was enough to trick you into thinking that Talon was taking care of you when all they were really doing was molding you into another operative.

Another one among many.

Today is the seventeenth of March. You were assigned a mission in an abandoned Overwatch base in Sweden, and the flight takes only a few hours. You decide to pass some time in the kitchen.

It smells faintly of freshly brewed coffee in the small block of the aircraft, but no one seems to be around at the time. A chair is pulled back slightly from the small metallic table protruding from the floor, and you grin momentarily before sauntering over to the coffee machine to pour yourself a hot drink.

“I know you’re there, Sombra,” you say out loud as you dump a few teaspoons of sugar in the slowly warming cup. “You can’t pull any of that sneaky shit on me. You know that.”

You turn around, facing away from the counter and watch as Sombra materializes in the chair that was suspiciously out of place. She slings an arm over the backrest and gives you a smile, her purple-painted lips stretching into a gentle smirk as she goes invisible again.

Taking a sip from your coffee, you lean back against the counter and close your eyes as the scent of a different kind of coffee- pure black, no sugar, no cream- washes over your senses. It’s strong, and comes from a source very close to you.

“Good morning, mi conejo,” Sombra whispers in your ear, her breath fanning down the expanse of your neck, sending shivers down your spine and right to the raised skin where the doctors had branded the Talon insignia on your otherwise unblemished skin. There are definitely some upsides to the shit Talon pumped into you over the years; increased regeneration of wounds, heightened senses, all that good stuff every good Talon operative has. All that good stuff that made you more durable and less likely to die on missions. Only a select few have these privileges, and sometimes you’re thankful that you weren’t one of the kids who died during experimentation.

“It’s two in the afternoon, Sombra,” you tell her calmly, taking another sip of your coffee. She glances over her shoulder and checks the analog clock above the doorway that separates the kitchen from the lounge.

“Well,” she says thoughtfully, pushing her lips out gently in a pout as she taps gently at the cupboards behind her. The clock begins to go backwards, stopping at 7:56, the little sun next to the numbers indicating that it is, indeed, morning.

“You know how the commander feels about you hacking stuff on company property,” you warn her, shaking your head slightly. She groans and undoes the hack, and the clock goes back to 2:02 in the afternoon.

“Can’t I have a little fun, now?” She lifts herself up and sits on the counter, the locks of her hair obscuring you from taking a peek at her pretty face. You have to admit, Sombra is a beautiful woman. The slight pout she always has, the way her colors compliment both her aesthetic and personality, her beauty mark. Sometimes you catch yourself staring at her, but you know it would be futile to hide it since she knew. She always knew.

You snap yourself out of your reverie and down the rest of your coffee, tossing the cup into the sink with a loud clatter before excusing yourself and leaving the kitchen. As much as you love being around Sombra as she’s such a joy to have around, the existential dread of ‘you or she could possibly die on this mission so there’s no point in pursuing anything further than friendship’ keeps plaguing your mind. Every mission Talon gives you is a gamble of life or death, and even with your superior artificial genes, enough damage to your physical body can still risk the possibility of severe injury or at worst, death.

You know what it feels like to lose everything. You don’t want it to happen again.

Two in the afternoon, you keep repeating to yourself as you shut the door to your quarters behind you. You still have a few hours before landing. Your mission states that you would be deployed in the wee hours of the morning, and due to time zone shenanigans, it would probably be around an hour after midnight when you would land on Swedish territory.

Sombra still sits in the back of your mind as you drift off to sleep.

The sharp beeps of your alarm pierce through the gentle waves of your deep slumber, and you wake up feeling no fatigue at all, the product of yet another successful Talon experiment. You barely have to stretch as you pick yourself up and off the bed, but still yawning lightly as you pull your boots on.

“Thirty minutes until deployment,” a robotic voice booms as you toss a jacket over your shoulders. A different voice comes online as you hear “Report to the armory,” in a deep, strict tone. Even through the slight crackle of the speakers the voice still crawls into the deep recesses of your soul, but that only comes hand in hand with the undead.

There are five of you on this mission, and the commander does a quick headcount as you file one by one into the armory. Sombra stands next to you with her hands folded across her chest, and you subconsciously do the same. Two others flank the both of you, and due to their natural bulkiness pushes the both of you closer to each other, much to your dismay and much to her delight. Almost elbow to elbow now, you thank your commander in your head for distracting your thoughts as he begins to go over the mission once more.

“Tonight we will be infiltrating the Overwatch base here in Gothenburg,” he says, his voice trailed with no emotion whatsoever. You know nothing of the man behind the mask, though rumors spread like fire inside the Talon base. He died, apparently, and was brought back to life, and unfortunately that’s probably the least baffling miracles that you’ve come across in the few years you have been on this earth. The man continues, swiping his ungloved hands over a holographic pad. His skin is gray, you notice, with blotches of a deep brown that hint at life once being there.

“This is a search and obtain mission,” he drawls, placing the pad down on the desk in the middle of the room. From there a hologram of the base’s map lights up, with different waypoints where everyone will be situated. “Sombra will take care of unlocking the doors and will be on the lookout. The rest of you will take the data we need, and you, agent,” he points his mask towards you. You peer into the dark eye holes and find nothing, not even a glimmer of light that suggests anything living under it. It gives you the chills, but you swallow your fears and give him a nod, giving him your attention. “You’ll be the distraction.”

The way he spits his words out makes you gulp down again, almost audibly. He goes on and points out the formations on the holographic map, and you can see burn marks in the exposed skin of his hand. The briefing ends and he stows the pad away in a cabinet, pulling his gloves on as he picks up his guns from a chest at his feet.

“Sixty seconds until deployment.” The robotic voice reverberates around the metallic walls of the armory as everyone suits up and equips themselves with their own weapons, making sure the necessary paraphernalia is on their person before marching towards the docking station.

Sombra stands next to you as you clutch tightly on the holster of your pistol, still nervous even after the countless missions you’ve already been on. She nudges you slightly with her elbow and you snap out of your daydream, looking up at her just as she flashes you her signature grin.

“Don’t worry, mi cielito,” she says, her expression softening upon noticing your rigidity. The name makes you flush a little. Talon put you in multi-linguistic classes because they want to mitigate as much of the language barrier as they could, so you could understand what Sombra’s saying sometimes, but not always. You lock eyes with her for only a moment before pulling your gaze away, pursing your lips as you have nothing to retaliate with.

The hatch opens with a silent hiss as the inside lights of the aircraft seep into the outside world, and you realize this is the first time in almost forever that you’ve seen grass. Real grass. You take a moment to breathe in the natural air, and it almost sends you into a daze as your teammates start filing out. Sombra tugs at your glove and gives you a worried look as you step out of the aircraft. The hatch door closes and blocks out all the light from inside the ship. Someone switches on a flashlight and Reaper leads everyone to the base guarded by thick walls and possibly armed guards; the moonlight shines on the dew droplets that rest gently on the blades of grass and you take in as much of the scent as possible- you’re going to want to relish this as the only thing you’ll be smelling later is blood.

The entry into the base was smooth as smooth gets. Your commander always proves to be capable of soloing an entire group of armed guards every time you’re on a mission with him, and this is no exception. You watch as Sombra quickly darts into the open door as Reaper finishes off a guard with a blow to his neck, and you follow Sombra inside.

Reaper and his two goons are busy picking off straggling guards who foolishly try to stop them, and you quickly tag along behind Sombra as she does work on the doors, leaving you to gather the data yourself.

She’s already a few doors down the hall when you’re only starting on the first, then again gathering information takes more time than opening doors. You admire Sombra for her work, though, since she’s skilled at what she does. She’s not the world’s number one hackerman for doing nothing, after all.

You enter the first room and make quick work of plugging in a USB in one of the computer’s many ports. Sombra’s purple skull, her trademark, pops up on the screen and for a moment it makes you smile, but you have work to do and there’s no time to waste. On the top right corner of the screen sits a timer that counts down how long you have before the system shuts down and collapses on itself, causing the files to backlog and flush down the rhetorical computer toilet. It’s counting down thirty seconds, and under the timer in small pixelated text reads, “make it quick, hermosa” with a tiny sloppy heart next to it. Really? Is she flirting with you?

Despite the cheesiness and the heaviness of the situation you manage to transfer all the necessary files onto your USB. You hear heavy footsteps approach the room. Quickly, you think to yourself, and cover your head with the hood of your jacket before arming yourself with the pistol in your holster. Just in case.

The door slams on the ground as a guard kicks it down, pointing his rifle in a defensive stance around the room, but it was empty. A computer sits in the corner, smoking from the fan spinning too fast and burning itself out. How ironic. Confused, he lowers his rifle to get a better look around the room, but before he could even focus from being scoped for so long he’s knocked out cold by Stein, whose size would have made his presence obvious but due to the guard’s confusion has gone unnoticed. By this time you’ve already phased through the wall into the next room, though nothing seems to be out of the ordinary there. You leave this room through the door, still keeping your guard up just in case anyone else comes around.

Data-gathering isn’t exactly that exciting of a mission, but knowing that there are people out there who won’t hesitate to put a bullet through your head gives you a sense of trepidation despite knowing that there are four other people who are there to protect you.

You zip through the next three computers undisturbed, each one of them displaying a cheeky message from Sombra under the timer, each one not failing to make your skin flush. The fact that she calls you lovely names just makes the emotions for her swell harder inside you, but you know this is no time for sentimentality. You have a job to do.

Once you’re out of the fifth room you hear rapid gunfire echo through the hall, followed by what can only be a groan of pain from no other than Sombra. You begin to panic at this, pulling your pistol out once more as you hurry towards the source of the noise.

At the end of the hall was a library, and in that library stands Sombra, one foot on top of a rather bulky guard, lying dead on the ground, if the blood pouring from his temple was any indication.

“What,” you begin, frowning. “I-”

“You look worried, mi conejo,” she says, wiping the bloodstains off of her gun. She looks towards you and gives you a smirk, stepping off of the dead man’s body before sauntering towards you, her purple gaze fixed on you as you stand there in shock.

“I… I thought I heard you having trouble,” you explain, unarming your pistol.

“Me?” she says, giving you a smug look. “As if.”

You can’t help but give her a close-lipped smile at this, and it comes off as awkward, and you want to hide, but there is no where to hide now, you’re on a mission, there is no time.

“Did you get all the information we need?” she asks you, getting closer. Right up in your personal space.

“Y-Yes,” you manage to stammer out. You feel for the USB in your pocket, making sure you haven’t left it somewhere in one of the rooms. The cold exterior of it offers you some relief, but before you can fish it out for proof Sombra moves up closer to you and now you’re face to face with her. You look deep into her eyes, which she’s told you were originally brown but had turned purple after Talon’s experiments, and you get lost. There are barely any lights that can give her the usual glimmer that dances around her pupils, but she’s just as striking in the dim, flickering library bulbs as she is in broad daylight. Not that you’ve seen her in natural light. It’s always artificial.

This, though, is real. This isn’t artificial.

She presses her forehead against yours and goes slack, careful not to press herself against you to respect your space as she pulls her gaze away.

“I like you,” she says, looking at the floor.

“I like you, too,” you reply, almost nonchalantly. Almost as if you knew this was going to happen. She smiles as if she knew, too.

“Let’s hang out, some time,” she offers.

“Like, as friends?”

“More than that.”

You smile and bite your lip as you lace your fingers with hers.

“I’d love to.”

they moved back to april’s moms hometown (surfside) in which april’s mom ultimately?? ruined herself?? she was basically lost & didn’t know what to do w herself now that she was single nd didn’t have a household to look after/husband to drool over,,.... after living luxuriously and given all the attention she wanted, april’s mother couldn’t STAND bein in a small town where no one cared abt her

this brought her to latch onto just about any man who gave her a compliment - and any man who seemed successful enough lmao ,, as a child, april had to deal with a lot of one night stands and random men in her home as well as her mother disappearing for days at a time

their neighbours would take care of them when this occurred but ultimately, it was up to april to take care of herself and her younger brother.

after graduating from high school, april went onto go to the university of florida, majoring in biology. she went to school for about a year, before finally coming to the conclusion that she wasn’t interested in furthering her studies !!

while smart and capable of getting good grades, she had always been more interested in fashion. after dropping out of school at the age of nineteen, april spent the next six months or so completely lost 

she returned to surfside with no clue what she wanted to do, only knowing she had no intentions of returning to school. april had a part time job but during this point of her life, she really was quite aimless. during the day, she worked while at night, she often partied and whatnot.

but as the months passed, april soon realized she didn’t want to just lead a life of leisure. she needed a new start, and applied into the international fashion academy in paris to study fashion design 

for the next three years, she stayed in paris studying! april just graduated a few months ago, and moved back to surfside in hopes to open up a small boutique of her own.

again, her dad helped pay for her boutique and it’s been open for about a month or so. her store doesn’t have super popular/high-end brands, but they’re more pieces that are rare :~~~)
