I just read The Revacholian Squabbler and I enjoyed it so much! It was like I could feel the warm, tender atmosphere Kim and Harry are building in Harry's apartment together. Also, if a pigeon told me to quit my job I would do it immediately.
🤝 I also would quit my job on the spot if a pigeon told me to do it.
Thank you so much!! :)) I just want them to get a moment of respite before everything kicks off around them 💜

By the way, your auronlu AO3 does not permit me to add you as a co-creator -- how would you like me to credit your authorship? You're of course linked in the applicable section and named in the "inspired by."
Well, That's weird. Inspired by is fine.
If you've got x-cetra in the transcript, which makes sense since that's what it was on Tumblr, you might put x-cetra aka "Tinw Filigod" in the credits, since that was my handle on several Tolkien forums back in the day. No need to include auronlu. But I haven't been active under my Tinw handle in ages, so maybe that's too confusing. Whichever works, really; as long as you've got one of my usernames, I'm not too particular. I defer to your judgment about what is easiest & most comprehensible.
(I'm a little shy about Auronlu, because that AO3 account includes smut I wrote years ago, but nowadays that's not the scarlet letter it used to be. And I'm pretty well resigned at this point, since I did not realize that both AO3 and Tumblr treat the first username you register as a main account and the others as sideblogs of that account.)

filigods replied to your post “Honestly, even edits that just tell me to move a comma give me an...”
as a somewhat young and new professional editor, are there any ways that editors could reduce this anxiety for writers? i definitely worry about coming across as too brusque in my notes to writers i don't already have a relationship with.
Honestly, every writer is different. So I think step 1 is just making sure you communicate with the author you’re editing for, and get a sense of their needs and fears. Some people don’t want content critiques and only want spelling and grammar. Some people don’t mind content critiques, but would rather not be slammed with the reasonings behind the critiques. Some people don’t mind the reasonings. Out there somewhere is this mythological writer I’ve heard of who not only welcomes critiques and loves them and loves learning every bitty thing they did wrong so they can turn it into a shining golden manuscript--and god I wish that was me--but I sometimes think that person is a unicorn or is lying.
A few possible tips?
- Work together in a google doc. That allows you to simply implement any line editing suggestions like spelling and grammar, and the author can just click a button to approve or disapprove of them. I suck at grammar and punctuation and I know it. The reason I cringe even at something so minor as a misplaced comma is that it can feel a bit like getting an F from my elementary schoolteacher, or at least stir up bad memories of those Fs, and I know it’s WHOLLY irrational but at the same time it is VERY nice to be able to click a button that just says “YES, YES, YOU’RE RIGHT, THE COMMAS WERE ALL IN THE WRONG PLACES AND YOU PUT THEM IN THE RIGHT PLACES AND I NEVER NEED TO THINK ABOUT IT AGAIN.” And then usually I’ll go back and if something is actually wrong on the part of the editor, I can catch it on a re-read.
- Try to intersperse critiques with praise. It is pure agony sometimes to go through edits. I have been known to need an actual stiff drink beforehand. There’s nothing more heartbreaking than getting to the bottom of a manuscript and seeing that your editor had nothing good to say about it. For some works, your editor is the only in-depth feedback you’ll ever get for it. So if you see a passage you like, please point that out as well! Even if it’s something as small and minor as a little note that says “Nice!” It can really help a writer get through a tough time.
- Be wary of criticism that can feel like a character attack. Stuff like “How could anyone like this guy, he’s so evil!” That character could very well be based on aspects the author feels very personally, and is taking a big risk by putting on the page. It can be very disheartening, even crushing, when critiques can be construed as personal attacks or attacks on concepts and characters we hold as dear as our own proverbially children. There’s no one-size-fits-all suggestion for addressing this, just keep at the back of your mind that you don’t have any idea what aspects of the story are particularly sensitive to the writer, so try to frame content criticisms as addressing these things as elements of a story that can be addressed mechanically. And examine yourself. Maybe your disgust at the villain (for example) is actually a sign that the writer is doing a really good job making you feel things! So one way to take the line up above would be, “I like this line of dialogue. There seems to be a lot of stress in this scene on how unredeemable the villain is. Is this intentional?” That phrasing allows the author to examine the scene and get some reader feedback, and maybe they didn’t mean to go that far, or maybe they didn’t go far enough!
This got a little away from me, but I hope it helps! (And god, this whole ramble is a really good example of why I need an editor lol)

i appreciate your narnia tag! it seems like people hate on voyage for not having as tight of a plot as the more popular books but i'm like "ah you must have not had the experience of being a young teen/preteen who was obsessed with mythology and stories and harbored the growing fear that you're losing your religion and the only thing that you still love about it is its potential for beauty and mysticism"
oh that's such a mood! Voyage is actually my 2nd favorite of all the Narnia books (after the Silver Chair), and it holds a special place in my heart for actually being the first Narnia book I read. My parents were in the extreme form of fundamentalism that didn't allow me to read any fantasy at all, so my first Narnia exposure was actually in iirc 4th grade, when we read an excerpt of Voyage for a class. I thought it was the most magical thing I had ever read, and I daydreamed about going on a mystical journey on a fantastic boat with a talking swashbuckling mouse for a very long time afterwards.

9! 28!
THANK YOU SO MUUUUCH, SARAH!! <333
9. a song that captures your aesthetic (can be ideal!)
there are SO MANY i want to put forward for this one, especially considering the “can be ideal” stipulation. who DOESN’T in some way want to embody “NFWMB,” i ask you. but the choice for this one bulled right up to the front of my brain and wouldn’t take no for an answer: “Red Earth & Pouring Rain” by Bear’s Den. it sounds like a rainstorm and is about aching from wanting to be good enough and knowing you’re not, that you’re going to fuck up this good thing you’ve got going, somehow...yeah. feels right, feels organic.
youtube
28. a song you always skipped, but ended up loving once you listened to it
i see no reason not to do repeats! it’s MY MUSIC QUESTION TIME and i’ll cry if i want to!!! i really am struggling to remember songs i used to skip and then came back to with a new appreciation, i think because my brain just conveniently forgets having been a Big Idiot previously once i realize a song is actually great. so for this one i’m gonna pick one of the more downtempo non-singles from Gackt’s Mars album, since it’s easy to overlook what with your “Mirror”s and your “Vanilla”s being all bombastic and ridiculous and sucking up your 16-year-old attention. this whole album is a masterpiece, partially because the slower, more introspective pieces allow Gackt to do so much vocal showing off.  "Freesia ~op.1~" is a prime example. (sorry for the spotify link; the only version on youtube is potato quality. :\)
ask me more about my MUSIC OPINIONS!!!!!

i know, i’m disappointed and i feel like an asshole fake fan since i only just read a couple books and those really recently, so i shouldn’t even get an opinion, i just. ugh. i wanted a little more, tbh.

SWEAR i was not ignoring these, i just have been super crazy busy at work and then didn’t have time once i got home either, ANYWAY<3333333333 thank you SO much for the questions, lovely!!!
2: A song you like with a number in the title
oOOoo, this is a tough one...cheesy as it is to say, i can’t deny that “Seven Nation Army” is an eternal banger. i also love “21st of May” by Nickel Creek - be sure to listen to the end for the full effect! honorable mentions to “Drei,” “Figure.09,” “Freesia~Op.1.~,” “One More Time,” “Set the Fire to the Third Bar,” “Seven Wonders,” “Untitled 1,” and, of course, “Year 3000.”
6: A song that makes you want to dance
tell you what, this White Reaper single that my local alt-rock station’s been playing is a hell of a bop!
17: A song that would sing a duet with on karaoke
the one time i ever did karaoke, i sang a duet with one of my besties to “Bring Me to Life” - i was Amy, she was Paul (linking mostly so that any infants who have never had the pleasure of seeing the INCREDIBLY extra video can have the opportunity to treat themselves)
21: A favorite song with a person’s name in the title
oh wow. uhhhh...okay, some greats include “jessica,” “roxanne,” “anthony,” “jolene,” “my sharona,” “bad, bad leroy brown,” “bennie and the jets,” “back stabbin’ betty,” “iris,” “jenny,” and “layla”
30: A song that reminds you of yourself
OOF!!!! i’m gonna say - okay, i’m gonna say, right now, it’s keane’s new single, “The Way I Feel”
thanks again, bb - lol, i always end up blubbering to you about my Music Feels. bless your patience<3

“thank you to the gorgeous @wordssometimesfail for tagging me in a get...”
s o n g r e c s
so THANKS (much belatedly for tolerating my fucking out of control need to word vomit about music at literally all hours of the day and night; forcing others to listen to songs i like is literally one of the few joys that makes life worth living. also, idk if this was intended in a “hey cool, song recs” way or a “hey, yeah, link me those songs” way, but @filigods, BABY YOU’RE GETTIN THOSE LINKS and also more because i am insufferable.
below the cut: links to just Some Music What I Think Is Cool, organized...pretty dubiously, but an attempt will be made. also, now and at all times, anyone who feels so inclined should always link me to music they’re liking right now or that they loved in the past or that they think is just the bee’s knees...anytime. ANYTIME.
okay so the songs i mentioned the other day are all in here, but i wanted to organize it a bit more than just a random grab bag to give you some direction so that you know what you might be into, if you’ve never heard of some of these (my music taste isn’t all that niche but i’ve gone through a lot of phases in my life XD). particular “omg please listen to this before you die” faves will be in italics.

oof yeah that that keane song hurts. it hurts really good! but it hurts. also thank you for the reminder that i haven't listened to enough allman brothers songs this summer.
what IS it about the allman brothers (and “jessica” specifically) that makes them such a summer sound?? like i can’t even IMAGINE listening the them in the wintertime, my whole brain rejects it.
ngl i burst into tears the first time i heard the new keane single. like, partly because i was just so happy to hear new keane music after thinking they were definitely dead, but also because and they say that you should move on/but you can’t even get your shoes on hit me like a cannonball straight through the heart!

WHAT! A! GIFT!! Full disclosure, it’s going to take me a long time to listen to all of these but I’m already excited. And this is the first time I’ve had a friend who also liked caedmon’s call!!! (And I had a weird crush on the jars of clay singer when I was 12 because I was also living that CCM life.) (And I don’t care if it makes me a dramatic bitch, but any song from treasure planet taps into my id and comes out through my vocal chords.)
<33333 i hope there’s one or two things in here you like, bb - and OF COURSE it’ll take you a while to get through, took my lazy ass like half a week to put it together so XD
DUDE caedmon’s call was like. actually some half-decent ccm. same with jars of clay. or maybe i just have rose-tinted earbuds in. but i still think If I Left the Zoo rocks so.
EVERYTHING ABOUT TREASURE PLANET TAPPED MY LIKE 15 YEAR OLD ID. i hear rzeznik start mournfully bleating and i JUST lose my mind.
