TMP is honestly this wild trip despite the glacial pacing at times, because it's like—
Vulcan woman: Spock, you've worked hard to purge yourself of all emotion, but your mind is picking up signals from some human and I guess some logic thing in space. my conclusion: you aren't racially pure enough to find your answers here
Spock: time to track down the pure logic thing and find the answers and meaning in my existence as a Vulcan that I've been searching for all my life and definitely never found in the past before all my previous character development got reset
[Meanwhile]
Kirk: so this unknown cosmic force is going to wipe out all life on Earth, and I've been placed in charge because I have a lot of experience dealing with bizarre dangerous cosmic shit as commander of this specific ship, in addition to my missing being in space because I was pushed into the admiralty at, like, age 39
Decker: *throws a series of tantrums about the prioritization of all of Earth above his ego for almost the entire mission*
Ilia: I have taken an oath of celibacy
Kirk: ... not super relevant. please just do your job
[Also, the transporter painfully melts some people we don't know into unrecognizable lumps of flesh. This is completely disconnected from the rest of the movie; it has no relevance to anything else, is immediately forgotten and never acknowledged again, and everyone acts like Bones is silly and paranoid for being nervous about going through the transporter]
Uhura: I think Admiral Kirk is obviously the person most qualified to command our incredibly dangerous and important mission, and we're damned lucky he got put in charge. if anyone cares
[everyone else]: *doesn't care*
McCoy: Jim, maybe you shouldn't make your mid-life crisis everyone else's problem
Decker: yeah! I should still be in charge! my solution is "don't take risks" when encountering the unknown and wait until systems are 100% safe before we do anything
Kirk: again let me reiterate that we need to act decisively even if it's risky or billions of people will die. we have to at least try, so waiting is not an option here
Spock: *shows up and, despite being icy and dismissive, immediately fixes all their most pressing technical problems*
McCoy: maybe we shouldn't trust him. he has his own agenda now
Kirk: wtf of course we can trust him he's Spock how dare
[Kirk quickly figures out the changes to the bridge, and from then on, his judgment and decisions are pretty much continually vindicated by the plot. Decker's advice goes from temporarily useful to unprofessional constant jabs with little sense of the real stakes and no better ideas. It becomes extremely apparent that Kirk really is far better equipped in temperament and experience to deal with the potential slaughter of Earth than Decker, especially when assisted by Spock—even this arctic version of Spock.]
Spock: *knocks out a crewman, steals a spacesuit, and tries to make contact with the cosmic acid trip/space vagina by traveling through what he unenthusiastically describes as its "orifices"*
Kirk: I ... guess maybe Bones was - no, it can't be - wait a moment, I -
Spock: *starts transmitting all the data he's gathering to Kirk*
Kirk: hah, I knew he would never betray me! Okay, everyone, you all stay here, I'm going to jump into space to catch him
[Spock melds with the cosmic space vagina and it violently ejects him through various orifices, as he might describe them, until he's thrown right into Kirk's arms, signifying nothing]
Bones and Chapel: melding with the cosmic logic vagina seems to have fried his brain :(
Spock, laughing: I should have known ...
Kirk: *seizes his shoulders* known WHAT Spock what are you talking about. please tell me your mind is intact. sweetheart it's okay what are you full of shame about this time *tries to shake the brain damage loose*
Spock: Jim ... I melded with the supreme logic being and discovered that there's no beauty or art or meaning in raw information or logic ... only a barren STEM hellscape without the humanities
[Spock slides his hand down Kirk's arm until their fingers wrap around each other, and their joined hands tightly cling together. unrelatedly, we have definitely seen Vulcans and Romulans use finger stroking as kissing and/or foreplay]
Spock: it was awful and empty and not at all what I've been searching for this whole time. and finally I understood that the real meaning in life comes from the simple feeling between you and me. The mechanized space vagina couldn't understand our love
[Kirk wraps his other hand tightly around his and Spock's clasped fingers. God knows what degree of obscenity they would be committing on Vulcan, but in any case, McCoy (as ever) politely pretends he's not seeing this happen right in front of him, since Kirk and Spock obviously have forgotten, yet again, that other people exist]
Kirk: 🄹🄰
[They stare tenderly at each other without speaking for a few seconds, but are definitely communicating on some level; after a moment's hesitation, Kirk nods slightly, then Spock nods in response, and it feels like we're missing half the conversation. Then Spock explains V'ger's existential angst in terms that obviously apply equally to his own past self, and by past I mean "for most of this movie until a few minutes ago"]
It turns out that V'ger, in addition to being a cosmic acid trip/space vagina/mass murderer, is also an annoying teenager, maturity-wise. I do appreciate Kirk and Spock having their "this is just adolescent angst and we are too middle-aged for this nonsense" reaction, and noping out to provoke V'ger into some measure of cooperation until they all figure out that it's trying to communicate with NASA.
In the course of all this, there's a point where Decker manages to be mildly helpful via the Ilia probe sort of remembering their old relationship, and he proves his value at last by welcoming the chance to orgasmically fuse with Ilia/V'ger, while Kirk is horrified and baffled at why Decker would find this remotely appealing. (ngl Kirk in this movie feels like the most purely gay-coded iteration of him; from the film itself, I could easily believe he has lost all attraction to women at this point.)
So thankfully, we're finally free of the weird and underwhelming Decker/Ilia duo via multiple cosmic acid orgasms, and the Earth is saved, etc. In aesthetics, it's all powerfully 70s, even in the awesome strange bits before V'ger looked quite so, uh, yonic. Somehow even the new bland sleepwear version of Starfleet uniforms seem very 70s; apparently Spock's kickass robes and the muscle-revealing quasi-polo top that Kirk promptly switches into consumed all available stylishness.]
Scott: everything's fine now, so I guess we can drop you off at Vulcan, Mr. Spock
Spock: my experiences today have, uh, resolved my need to stay on Vulcan, so there's no reason to detour for me. I'll just tag along to Earth for >_> no reason
Kirk: [deeply vindicated for about the twelfth time that day, but this time also managing to exude Spock is getting laid tonight without saying a word about him] Mr. Sulu, ahead, warp one.

another post for @bttfjanaury! this one's @itsthemorph's mermarty au and very predictably i got carried away with it LMAO.
yap session and bonus stuff below the cut:
once again i came up with an entire backstory for this au, and if i were a fanfiction writer i would genuinely consider writing it since it's a lot less visually comedic than the weredoc au (and comedic in general, it's played a little straighter than "man turns into dog and is thoroughly inconvenienced by it") (unfortunate [in reference to visuals] bc i enjoy drawing mermarty a great deal more than weredoc GBJKGJ) bc i really like the premise but i'm pretty bad at fleshing out a narrative in enough detail to last the whole story so bullet points it is:
doc has decided to take a break from his time-travel-related research and go on vacation! the fresh coastal air might jostle a couple ideas into place, and while he is a nuclear physicist and not a marine biologist he wouldn't mind checking out some of the local aquatic life
and by local aquatic life he meant like normal fish and stuff. a nice mollusk or two even. so when he ends up fishing an entire boy out of the water instead he's understandably very shocked
before doc can move past the "where did he come from??" thought to register his more fish-like qualities, the boy makes a run (a swim?) for it. fortunately or unfortunately for doc, he ends up being able to register the fish-like qualities after all since he gets dragged into the water along with him. the moment doesn't last too long, though, and the fish-boy is gone as soon as doc realizes the guy has a fish tail instead of legs
doc gets back on the dock (haha), thinks about the whole ordeal for a bit, and decides that the best course of action is just to assume he hallucinated the whole thing in a fit of heatstroke or something like that. he's here to relax and get his thoughts in order so he can continue working on his time machine! there's no time to investigate fairy-tale creatures or whatever supposedly living off the coast of california!
it's not shown in the comic but i imagine doc has a little portable radio next to him as he was fishing, so some time passes before he catches a glimpse of something shining in the water underneath the dock
he looks through the cracks in the dock and lo and behold, it's the same boy from earlier! doc greets him, and the boy immediately disappears under the water. doc thinks he's scared him off until a few minutes later where he pokes his head out and says hi back
they get to chatting and doc learns a couple things:
1. his name is marty!
2. he was trying to get doc to realize that he forgot to put bait on his hook but got his hand caught on it, and was trying to get his hand unstuck from the hook without ripping it open before doc ever had the chance to see him, which he obviously failed at
3. both the being seen and ripping his hand open, because in his haste to get away after being seen by doc he ended up doing that anyways. so there's like a lot of blood coming out of his hand now? but like don't worry about it. it'll be fine. he thinks.
4. he really likes whatever it is that's playing on the radio
doc insists on patching up his hand and initially marty refuses but lets him do it eventually, and marty tells doc that for a land dweller he's actually surprisingly nice. doc says nah anyone would want to help out someone hurt, especially if they're the one's who caused it. and marty's kind of confused by that because his family's always warned him of how dangerous humans are, which he kind of never thought too hard about until now where his time off this particular coast has really proven them correct, because he's encountered a bunch of humans over the past couple weeks and they've all tried to kill him or catch him. doc's the only one who's actually bothered to say hi!
after learning that particular not-at-all-concerning tidbit, doc asks him to elaborate because there's a lot to unpack over there, but someone else walks onto the dock before marty can get a word in and he takes off
marty does not return, even once the other guy leaves, and when doc packs it up to return to the place he rented out for the vacation he overhears a conversation among a group of men about spotting something weird in the water earlier and that it kind of looked like a mermaid? and that if any of them manage to catch it they'll all be rich as thieves. and another guy in the convo goes no you're thinking of rich as kings, you're mixing it up with a different analogy. and the first guy goes no i'm not i said what i said
so now this vacation is doing anything but clearing doc's mind. he's really worried about that little fish guy
there's a couple more ideas i had but halfway through writing out this bullet list i've realized that if i were to actually write this as a fanfiction, i'd probably want to keep those a surprise. so what i just wrote out is kind of the equivalent of one chapter
edit after thinking about it a bit more: since most humans have been trying to kill him, marty really has no incentive to let a guy know that he's wasting his time fishing with a baitless hook. so a. he's still pretty optimistic that most humans aren't out to get him, even if his experience off this particular coast says otherwise, so he was trying to be nice anyway or b. (which i think is a lot funnier) he has started to pull on people's lines as a way to fuck with them. i think if i wrote this i'd change it to this one
i based mermarty off of a guppy fish! specifically this kind of guppy fish:
Tumblr media
i was searching up kinds of fish and he just had the vibe of this thing. although now i think i should've made him a flying fish instead. for the pun
alternate ending to the mini comic:
Tumblr media
the other one makes a little more sense since just approaching a guy whose species doesn't know about your existence unprompted is pretty stupid even for marty (and also i thought it was funny that the hook didn't have anything but doc ends up catching something anyways) but i still think this one's funny too

hey in ur peri animatic: (https://youtu.be/OCqlRuDaXYU?si=K52WDu_vw9rg7chz) that I have been permanently obsessed over since today and have watched about 20 times by now so much that I have drawn & posted stuff based on it what was that partial bug form peri had?
Tumblr media
I haven’t watched either of the show btw so if it’s explained in the show please tell me plsssss
OK, SO the bug thing is not technically canon to the series. It's based on my own headcanons for fairy biology, but i do have justifications for it!! Fairies have very strong shape-shifting abilities, so it would make sense that the form they show to humans isn't necessarily their true form(not to mention extreme that mimicry is very common in insects). And you want to know the visible traits almost every fairy has in common? Being very small with Insect-like wings.
The fact that their humanoid form isn't their true form in actually confirmed in the show! Cosmo and Wanda are revealed to look like biblically accurate pseudo-angels in the museum episode. (I say pseudo angels because the Flaming Sword of Eden is only debatably sentient and I don't think is considered an angel. Ophanim are also debatably not angels because they don't have wings (sorry for the angel tangent I like angels))
Tumblr media
So wouldn't their true forms be angelic then? Well, yes. But I like bugs so. Also I have more headcanons to justify myself. I like to think that they have both a true-true form (incomprehensible to the human brain, probably exists mostly in a dimension invisible to us, that looks how we imagine biblically accurate angels), and a fairy form (which is visible to humans but is naturally very insect like and tends to scare people). So, in order to interact with humans, they have to learn to shapeshift into a humanoid form but will occasionally slip if they get too relaxed/aren't careful, hence the mandibles coming out when he yawns!
The reason they struggle so much more with human forms than the animals or objects they typically turn into is that, well, they aren't trying to convince those animals or objects. The more human they try to look, the harder it is to keep up convincingly. If you turn into a really uncanny squirrel, only other squirrels will notice. If you turn into a really uncanny human, they form a lynch mob and burn you at the stake.

[rushes into the ask box and trips on the way] Hi and hello Devil!!! I got very excited when I saw you opened requests again! I hope you're doing well when you get to my request <3
Could I request something for my favorite lad Skeptic? Specifically, I'd love to read something about Skeptic getting really stuck in his own head, like in an investigation or something similar, before seeing that what he's doing is hurting him or others. Whether it ends well (he realizes it *before* he can do irreparable damage) or not (he only realizes it when it's way too late) is up to you!
...and because I'm EG, bonus points if it includes Skeptunist, but that's not at all necessary <3
Anyways, thank you for taking my request and thank you for doing what you do <3
(HI EG!! [Picks you up off the ground and makes sure you're alright] Last time we did this, I made you lose your mind. Let's see if I can do it again- and of course I'll make it Skeptunist, what do you take me for?/silly. Anyway, enjoy!)
"I'll figure you out. I have to."
Skeptic sighed as he crushed up another paper ball of dead ends, tossing it over his shoulder, only making the pile on the floor behind him even bigger, but he was too engrossed in his work to care right now.
He tapped his pencil against his desk in irritation, dragging a hand roughly through his unkempt feathers, staring down at all his miscellaneous notes, that would make anyone else think he was insane if they read them. But Skeptic was perfectly sane right now, just frustrated.
He heard his bedroom door open, and he didn't need to look up from his work to know who was there.
"Hello, love."
"Hello, handsome!" Oppy brightly replied, and soon enough, Skeptic felt arms wrapping around his neck from behind, and he allowed himself a moment to sigh and relax in his lover's arms, leaning his head back.
"How goes the research, detective?" Oppy asked, and Skeptic groaned, closing his tired eyes as he said, "It's going. That's all I can say."
"You've been stuck in here for at least two hours," Oppy pointed out, then pressed a kiss to the corner of Skeptic's mouth, making a pleasant shiver go up his spine. "You should take a break, stretch your legs and get some fresh air. Let's go for a walk, just you and me."
It sounded lovely, and usually Skeptic wouldn't hesitate to say yes to his caring partner- but this investigation was weighing too heavily in his head to let go of it, for even a moment.
He sighed again, tilting his head to lean against Oppy's head. "I'd love to, sweetie. But I can feel myself getting closer to the answer, so I think I'll stay here for a bit longer."
He heard Oppy sigh, and Skeptic winced at the disappointed hint he heard in it, hating when he let Oppy down like this. But he knew it would be worth it in the long run- this was going to help the whole flock if Skeptic could figure this out.
"Fine, if you say so," Oppy said, and although he sounded unbothered, Skeptic knew that Oppy was an expert in masking his true emotions, so he twisted his head slightly to peck his love's cheek. "Tomorrow, I promise I'll take a break."
He had the pleasure in seeing Oppy perk up slightly at that, and he smiled in that beautiful way that Skeptic loved to see, like the sun shining down on him. Skeptic would do anything to protect that smile.
"I'll accept that, then." Oppy loosened his hold on Skeptic's neck, straightening up and resting his hands on Skeptic's shoulders, and started to slowly massage them, making Skeptic bite down on a groan at how nice it felt.
"I will say, that I don't think studying this deeply into the world we landed in is that serious."
"It is very serious," Skeptic said, trying his hardest to keep his voice calm and collected when Oppy was practically working magic on his muscles. "We need to know what's out there, if there's anything dangerous out there."
"We've been settled here for months now, darling," Oppy said, his palms leaving warmth for Skeptic to soak up. "If something wanted to attack us, they would've done it by now- we aren't exactly a quiet flock." Skeptic chuckled, closing his eyes again.
"Besides, the most dangerous thing we've ever faced was the princess and her vessels, so if we can handle them, we can handle anything."
Skeptic hummed in agreement- until he felt his mind lingering on his partner's words. He could feel his thoughts mulling over questions and theories that took him deep into his mind, to the point that he barely acknowledged that Oppy had given him a kiss goodbye and left him alone, much more concerned with one question- what happened to the vessels?
-
The next day, Skeptic decided that not looking at the mess his room had become was probably for the best, for the sake of his dwindling patience and sanity.
There was so many pages and notes covering his desk that he could no longer see the wooden surface of the desk underneath, and he had to move the plates of untouched food that Oppy had brought him, to make more room for his notes.
Skeptic wouldn't say that he had made progress, but he had definitely opened up his mind to more possibilities regarding their situation.
Originally, Skeptic had just been interested in figuring out what type of world they had materialised it, but then he started to wonder about other things, such as what became of the vessels?
Had they been given freedom as well? If so, where were they? Had they appeared in an entirely different place, far away from the flock?
Or what if they hadn't? What if the vessels had remained within the Shifting Mound? But if that were the case, why hadn't the voices remained with the Long Quiet?
That dug Skeptic into a deeper hole, and soon he was wondering what became of the two Gods, as much as their names brought complicated feelings within Skeptic. But he couldn't rule anything out anymore.
All these questions had sent Skeptic into a spiral, one where he woke up much earlier and was forced to untangle himself from Oppy's arms to keep working, because his brain would not let him rest anymore.
He needed to get to the bottom of this, for everyone's sake.
"Babe."
Instinctively, Skeptic's hand flicked out, hiding his notes on the Shifting Mound underneath his other, less troubling papers, once he heard Oppy's disapproving voice behind him.
He sighed, knowing what was about to happen, and he turned around in his chair, finding Oppy with his arms crossed and leaning against the doorframe. Skeptic tried to avoid looking in his concerned eyes.
"Listen-"
"Honey, you look exhausted," Oppy said, worry heavy in his voice, pushing himself off the doorframe to come up next to Skeptic. "I know this is important to you, but you're gonna crash out if you don't take care of yourself."
"I'm fine, Oppy," Skeptic insisted, but he knew there was still suspicion in the other's eyes, so he just went back to his notes, hoping Oppy would just drop it now.
But then he felt lips brush against his temple, and hands softly caressing and preening his wings. "Please," Oppy whispered, and Skeptic's grip on his pencil tightened, feeling his resolve breaking. "Please take a break from this- just for a day- for me, darling?"
He wanted to. Skeptic so badly wanted to switch off his brain and focus on his wonderful partner, only having to think about kissing and loving Oppy.
But then fear would suddenly grip him, at the idea that if he took a break, he wasn't making progress, and if he wasn't making progress, he wasn't searching for an answer, which could doom them all.
Which could put Oppy in danger.
Skeptic wouldn't let that happen. He wouldn't let any harm come to his love. So he had to keep digging.
Skeptic was prepared for the reaction as he turned and looked up at Oppy from his chair, putting a hand atop of Oppy's, and said, "I know you're worried about me, love. But you have to understand, I'm doing this for us."
Oppy's eyes widened slightly at that, and his caressing paused, all his attention on Skeptic's words, and although he missed the feeling of his feathers being played with, he knew the warmth was only a distraction right now.
"I'm trying to figure all this out, to make sure that the flock is safe, that you are safe."
"The only one in harm right now is you, Skeptic," Oppy argued, and although his voice remained level, Skeptic could clearly hear the sharp frustration in his voice. "You're not gonna help anyone by passing out and not eating."
Oppy looked away with a sharp sigh, and if only Skeptic could make him understand that this couldn't wait. What if the one day that Skeptic rested, was the one day that the vessels appeared and attacked? What if the Shifting Mound planned to betray the Long Quiet, and only Skeptic could figure out her plan?
"If you won't listen to me, despite how clearly right I am," Oppy's tired voice broke Skeptic out of his maddening thoughts, and he looked up, and Oppy wasn't looking him in the eye anymore, "then you could at least eat the food I bring you, so that I know you're not withering away in here."
"Fine," was Skeptic's curt response, immediately hovering back down over his notes.
The room was silent for a long time, before he heard footsteps slowly make their way to the door, and then- "You know we got out, right?"
Skeptic squeezed his pencil tighter.
"You know we got out of that loop, and there's no Echo to control us anymore? We have all this freedom to take advantage of, so please don't waste it like this." Then the door shut.
Skeptic only had one reply to that.
What if the Echo never truly left?
He didn't eat his meal that night.
-
He was so close.
He was so close to the truth.
He just needed to question everything again, so that he could see all the potential dangers.
His room was just a victim of his research now, and Skeptic couldn't remember the last time he had gone to bed, but he'll rest easy once he solves this mystery.
He had been forced to leave his room for only a few moments, to grab more papers, and he wasn't completely sure when the last time he saw walls that weren't his bedroom, but when he returned to his room, he was shocked to find Oppy, standing in the middle of this room, reading his notes with a look of frightened disbelief.
Skeptic closed the door, and their eyes met.
"You shouldn't look through my stuff," was the first thing that Skeptic thought to say, and that was all the spark Oppy needed.
"Skeptic," Oppy started, his voice rising in panic, while still making an attempt to remain calm, "why are you taking notes on the Echo? On the Shifting Mound?"
"It's part of my research, Oppy. You know this."
"No, I don't actually!" Oppy exclaimed, clutching the paper tight enough to crumple it, waving it around in front of him. "How is any of this part of what you said you were looking into?"
"I realised that I couldn't rule anything out. I needed to think of everything."
"Skeptic," Oppy said slowly, and for some reason, that was what annoyed Skeptic. Not Oppy snapping at him, but talking to him as if Skeptic was the mad one that needed calming down.
"Sweetheart, I'm telling you, this isn't healthy anymore. You need to-"
"If you say 'take a break' again," Skeptic snapped at him, marching over and ripping the note from Oppy's hand, "then I'm going to break my damn skull so I don't have to hear that anymore!"
Oppy stared at him, stunned, likely having never heard Skeptic snap like that before, to him, of all people as well.
Skeptic panted in anger as he tried to smooth out the crumpled paper, letting the tension in the room sit heavy between them.
"I'm just trying to look out for you, because you know you get stuck in your own head, sweetheart. You need someone to help you bring you back when-"
"I'm not a fledgling, Oppy! You don't need to coddle me!"
"I'm not coddling you!" Oppy protested, wings rising like the anger in the room. Skeptic saw the way Oppy tried to hide his twitching fingers behind his back, a forgotten habit of wanting to arm himself and feel safe, and Skeptic, despite this arguing, wanted Oppy to feel safe.
"Oppy, I know you're worried, but trust me, I know my limits." Skeptic ignored the subtle shake of Oppy's head to gesture towards his desk. "I know I can figure this puzzle out if you just give me some more time."
"That's not the problem, Skeptic!" Oppy protested, a desperate look in his eyes. "The problem is that you've taken this and made it so much harder for yourself! Have you even looked at yourself, lately?" Skeptic squeezed the paper in his hand tighter. "You look like you're on the brink of collapsing, and I'm just trying to prevent that!"
"I don't need you stopping my work!" Skeptic brought the paper to his chest as he argued, his thoughts a mixture of anger, fatigue, and that addictive urge to keep looking, to search and question everything until he uncovered the truth. Only then will Skeptic be satisfied.
"You don't understand what I'm trying to do here, Oppy," Skeptic said, trying to keep his voice calm, but couldn't hide the shaking. "I'm doing this for the good of the flock, for us."
"How is thinking about that awful fucking Echo for the good of the flock?!" Oppy yelled, and a small part of Skeptic broke at hearing the fear in his voice. "How will that do us any good?"
"I'm trying to keep the flock safe!" I'm trying to keep you safe.
"The only one that needs to be kept safe is you, from your horrendous work habits!"
"If I can solve this, we won't have to worry about anything ever again!" You won't have to worry about anything anymore.
"Baby, I just don't think this is the right thing to do-"
"Well how could you?" Skeptic snapped, glaring at Oppy now, who just refused to listen to Skeptic, despite all the hard work he was doing.
"You're useless when it comes to thinking about anything other than yourself!"
Oppy's face fell, and that's when Skeptic realised his mistake.
He froze, dropping the paper that Skeptic had crushed into a ball again, staring and panting in shock at the words that had slipped out of him.
Why did he say that? No, he didn't mean that. Skeptic needed to apologise-
"Oh."
But then it got worse.
Oppy took a clumsy step back, away from Skeptic, as if Skeptic was the danger. Then Oppy chuckled awkwardly, his whole body trembling, and that's when the horror hit Skeptic.
Oppy waved a hand casually through the air as he said, "Okay, I understand." Skeptic could do nothing but stare in distraught horror, as he watched Oppy give him a friendly, fake smile, slowly piecing back together that mask that Skeptic had worked so hard to bring down.
Oppy took another step back. "I'll leave you be, from now on. So sorry to bother you, my friend."
Friend? Friend? No no no, not like this-
Skeptic tried to take a step forward, but the second his body moved, Oppy rushed out of the room, closing the door with a final, fearful look at Skeptic.
Then Skeptic was alone, and all he could think about was how badly he wished he wasn't.
Why did he do that? Why did he say that? Everything he did had been for Oppy, to keep him safe and happy, so then why-
Skeptic was frozen, staring at the door that Oppy had left through, his mind whirling with guilt, regret, anger- asking himself why, why, why!
But Skeptic still stood in that room, and he didn't move...
...and he didn't move....
...and he didn't move.

I’ve read a lot of posts about Lilo and Stitch 2025 and I see the topic of Pleakley’s cross-dressing being brought up quite often.
I haven’t watched the remake and I doubt I will so my goal is not to compare Pleakley from the animated movie(s) with Pleakley from the live action. I just want to share some of my thoughts on this topic too because Lilo and Stitch has always been one of my most favourite Disney franchises with Pleakley being one of my most favourite characters of all time, not to mention I’m getting into this franchise again so I’m starting to have more to say about it.
Just note that those are only my thoughts that I decided to share so I’m not claiming to be a Pleakley expert or anything and I’m sorry if I’ve worded anything wrong.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the takes made in favour of Pleakley NOT cross-dressing in the live action is that him disguising as a woman is taken more as a joke and hence seems offensive to trans people. I’m not going to deny that it was definitely used for a comic effect in some scenes but I think it’s also fair to point out that Pleakley seems to be genuinely interested in feminine clothes and feminine looks in general. Otherwise he wouldn’t put on a wig and admire himself in the mirror (or even keep the wig after he didn’t need his disguise anymore) in the campsite scene.
Tumblr media
Is it a minor detail? I’d say yes. But it does imply that Pleakley is interested in feminine clothes and this is why it’s grown into such a significant part of his character in the next movies and in the series.
Pleakley is an Earth expert, and he’s spent many years of his life studying this planet and familiarizing himself with its customs and traditions (which we see A LOT in the series, from Pleakley doing yoga to singing Christmas carols), and there’s no wonder Pleakley would get interested in the Earth attire as well. I don’t remember where I read it but I’m pretty sure Pleakley didn’t even know that clothes he took in the og movie were feminine* so it only kindled his interest. It’s unknown, and it makes it exciting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An interesting thing I find about Pleakley’s character is that despite leaning towards feminine clothes and clearly favouring them (and even disguising as Lilo’s aunt on Earth) he doesn’t stop wearing masculine clothes. He wears them both depending on his mood, and nobody comments on his preferences.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the episodes from Lilo and Stitch: the Series that really stood out for me in regards of Pleakley’s identity and the way other people/aliens treat it is the episode Nosy, the one about an experiment that reveals secrets and loves gossiping.
We learn that Keoni, Lilo’s crush, has a crush on Pleakley, and when Nosy reveals that Pleakley is not a woman, the first thing Keoni does is asking Lilo about Pleakley to make sure he’s indeed not a woman. What is his reaction after this confirmation? He’s just glad that it was revealed because yeah, he’s a simple straight guy (who’s also much younger than Pleakley but this is not what we’re talking about now).
Keoni never asks why Pleakley, a male, would even wear dresses, have long hair, and call himself an aunt. As I mentioned above, literally nobody in the series (and also in movies) cares about the way Pleakley dresses. They never asked him to explain or God forbid justify his preferences.
They’re cool with it, and it makes Pleakley’s presence in the franchise as natural and genuine as possible because the way he dresses is not his whole character, this is something that blends neatly with his other traits to make him a memorable and compelling character.
As I said in the beginning, I haven’t watched the remake so I have no idea how they pulled off the rest of Pleakley’s character but I’m one of those people who’s convinced that Pleakley (read: an Earth expert who was sent to that very planet, getting a chance to learn more about its customs and traditions and accidentally stumbling across Earth feminine clothes just to embrace it as a way of self-expression and find comfort in it) is not Pleakley without cross-dressing.
*Added some more thoughts on it in the tags because those are mostly me thinking out loud and I wouldn’t want to ruin the structure of my ā€œessayā€ with random babbles.

another concept that I think would be interesting to explore in fic, is What do the Rimworld colonists think of the player?
What are you to them?
You design the colony, and they will build everything you lay out, no questions asked.
You decide what their priorities should be, and even if you make stupid decisions that put their lives in danger, they will follow that order without question.
You can give them a long to-do list, and the only reason they'll stop before completing it (aside from you telling them to stop), is if they physically cannot continue, because they're ready to collapse of hunger or exhaustion. Or are in such a bad mood they have a mental break.
Why are they so willing to obey you? What are you, that they trust you so unflinchingly, and let you dictate their lives?
You are capable of being in multiple places at once, as demonstrated when part of the colony is in a caravan several days' travel away, and yet you can instruct both groups in the same moment.
Time does not flow over you the same way that it does the colonists. There are times where you notice things too late, yes, but there are also times when, the very moment disaster strikes, you have a plan as though you were able to deliberate for hours during the span of a breath.
You have not aged. You were here when the first pod crash-landed, you bore witness as their children were born, you watched over them as they grew into adults, and you were there still, as they reached reached old age. You will be there for as many generations as exist in this land.
What are you?
