synopsis: your brother said you could flirt with anyone on the paddock but he didn't specify who you couldn't do it with..

You weren't supposed to be there. Technically.

Your brother Oscar has explicitly said, "Stay in Melbourne. Monaco is too hectic."

So naturally, you booked a flight and showed up.

You were 22, not much younger than Oscar so you weren't a child and besides, the paddock was technically a second home by now. You'd grown up around motorsport, pratically living in garages with Oscar since he was karting. The scent of fuel and the sound of air guns were comforting in a weird, nostalgic way.

Still, when you wandered into the McLaren hospitality suite wearing Oscar's old hoodie and holding a coffee the size of your face, Lando Norris did a double take.

He was already halfway through a conversation with Zak Brown when he saw you.

You, in all your 'I just got off a plane' glory, sipping your coffee, hair tied loosely into a low ponytail and sunglasses pushing your hair back. Lando forgot what he was saying, Zak noticed. Oscar didn't — too busy on the F1 sim.

"She's here." Lando muttered under his breath.

Zak raised a brow. "Pardon?"

"Nothing."

Later that day during pre-quali, you found Lando leaning against the barriers outside the motorhome, scrolling through his phone. Your heart beat a little faster. He didn't know you were coming — at least, not from you.

"Hi." You said softly, a little smug.

He looked up, startled then grinned like he hadn't seen the sun in weeks.

"You're here. What happened to 'Monaco's too much chaos?'"

You shrugged. "Chaos is kinda my thing."

He pulled you into a subtle hug, all warm arms and cologne and that post-training glow. It was fast, discreet — not too close in case anyone was watching.

Oscar had made that clear from the beginning.

"You can flirt with anyone on the grid. Anyone. Except the wrong people."

Technically Lando was Oscar's teammate so he wasn't really the wrong person.. Apart from when they battled it out on track.

But it was inevitable.

3 months ago

It started in Bahrain.

Lando has been teasing you at dinner, just you, him and Oscar. Stupid jokes. Quick comebacks. And when Oscar got up to take a call, Lando leaned across the table and whispered.

"Do you always smile like that? Or is it just when your brother's not looking?"

You rolled your eyes but the answer was obvious.

You always smiled like that around him.

Fast forward to the present, you were watching the quali session from the back of the garage, McLaren headset on and eyes glued — focused on the screen ahead, leg bouncing. Lando had just pulled P3 and your brother was P5. You felt a rush of pride and joy for the two of them — but when Lando stepped out of the car, all flushed cheeks and grinning behind his helemt, his eyes found yours first.

Big mistake.

Because Oscar had caught it. The subtle glance and the smile he watched you return. The way you walked off with a team jacket which didn't look his size. Oscar's eyes narrowed.

He knew.

You were absolutely busted.

That same night, on the back of a yacht with your feet dangling off the water, the sky was dark with stars glimmering from far far away as you watched the water below you lap and move about. Under the moonlight, you felt Lance's hand raech for yours as he laced his fingers with them.

"I think he knows." You whispered.

"I know he knows." Lando replied, a small laugh escaping him. "He cornered me in the garage after media. Said, and I quote 'Touch my sister and I'll make sure the championship this year will be very hard.'

You groaned. "I'm gonna kill him.. He babies me too much yet he forgets we're only a year or 2 apart."

"No, he's just being a brother. Honestly.." He looked at you, really looked. "I get it."

"You do?"

"Yeah. If I had a little sister and she was dating a guy like me.. I'd be worried too."

You raised an eyebrow. "A guy like you?"

He leaned in, pressing a kiss to your cheek then down to your shoulder. Soft. Careful.

"Fast. Flirty and completely in love with you."

Your heart stuttered.

You turned your head, kissing him — slow, intentional as if time didn't exist.

"Then, maybe." You whispered. "You can tell him that next time."

He smiled against your lips.

"Only if you're next to me when I do.

The next morning, Oscar found you both in the McLaren motorhome. Lando was leaning against the counter in the hospitality suite sipping coffee whilst you sat on the counter beside him scrolling on your phone, definitely too close and wearing his orange hoodie.

He paused, arms crossed.

"Morning." He said a little too dryly.

"Hi." You chirped, suddenly 10 years younger under his glare as you hopped off the counter and turned to face him.

Lando looked like he was preparing for a slap or potential death but Oscar just sighed, walked over and grabbed a croissant. Then as he turned to leave, he muttered:

"If he breaks your heart, I break his nose."

You beamed.

Lando barely blinked yet alone dare take a breath.

"Wait so you're okay with it..?"

Oscar shrugged. "I mean, I don't get why you chose my sister of all people but yeah.. Just don't be gross in front of me."

You grabbed Lando's hand from behind the counter and gave it a squeeze.

and thank you for the excuse to post the. just absolute wall of text that i truncated down to form the tags of that post. (i did,,, hit the tag limit. i forgot tumblr had one of those...) so let me just paste that and tidy it up a bit...

I am putting this under a readmore because it's a bit long. but:

This is like. The General Context for all* of my postcanon doodles? (Except AUs obviously) Like this is the base idea I've been drawing them all in. So, feel free to backread with this in mind. I've basically had this 'postcanon' timeline set in my brain since finishing the game...

My general thoughts are that I like the idea of Loop (even if through dubiously ethical means) being able to slowly reintegrate with the party as a whole new person, because they are, in fact, their own person.

It's a muddle of thematic threads im pulling on and "wouldn't it be fucked up if", but. (at its core, it's powered by the fact that like, while narratively isat's theme of 'the only person who can truly take the first step to help you is yourself'. (wrt: loop helping the party help siffrin in act 5) which i LOVE AND IS GREAT NARRATIVELY…. would be super fucked up irl to learn that your friend 'learned as a lesson' while you stood by kinda uselessly. I know i'd be upset about it. but thats mostly background here. doesn't really come up. at least not until loop has to explain who they are and the party realises they had to fall back on literally themselves again for help, but i digress,)

The real core concept is: Occam's razor. It is like, inherently, a buckwild thing to accuse a person of being somehow a clone or copy of your friend. Even if they start vaguely alluding to a backstory it's far more likely they were some other person before all that. (I still think Odile has that theory in the back pocket but she's rational enough to know it's a really long shot without a solid explanation. and i think Loop deep down knows this, and would, if cornered into confessing, turn the situation around to go J'ACCUSE and make HER explain it instead. Ever longer dodging being direct with their emotions...)

And the party are nice! And if someone has changed and wants to keep stuff secret it's kind of not their business? (Though it's hard not to speculate… see: the main joke of the doodles) And they seem important to Siffrin so they just try to accept them abrasive quirks and all. And eventually the question of their prior identity just fades away since, well, they're Loop. Their friend Loop.

but yeah. personal headcanon is that a few months/weeks after picking up and getting aquainted with Nille** (since that was presumably the IMMEDIATE TASK postgame), Loop reappears (either after a literal period of nonexistance, or just spending a few months wandering the french countryside alone being attacked by wild dogs). Since Siffrin has had a while to be therapised by the party they're doing mostly okay, but Loop showing up and still being agitated/aggressive pulls them both into a bit of a backslide behaviourally and puts the party on the back foot again.

Hooowever, I do think that due to no longer being literally stewing in the worst pressure cooker of all time together, the two do mostly actually sort themselves out with productive conversation. (Via a cycle of: genuinely distressing argument -> weeeird lovebombing -> ok we're good -> repeat, that gets less intense over time)

Thus, allowing the party to just. Integrate loop as a new person. They and Siffrin shuffle into different ecological niches (Loop taking over stuff Siffrin is now too squeamish for, etc (see: hunting, mostly)), and while it's not exactly what Loop wanted they generally get that beggars can't be choosers and it's a pretty good deal. And the rest of the party does straight up just like them as a friend, especially when Loop quits trying to actively antagonise them after a few weeks of being around them, since they just can't keep up being mean to people they like forever.

As for how I think the truth eventually drags itself out. This is where I invoke The Isabeau Torment Nexus™. So its gonna get shippy here for a bit hold on.

Which is, I think giving them time before Loop reappears long enough that Siffrin and Iseabeau actually manage to become established, Isabeau has to be the one to nudge the pair of them and go. "Hey. You know we're in Vaugarde right. I'm okay with polyamory if we all communicate." Before Loop and Siffrin actually even acknowledge that whatever the fuck they have going on kinda looks a lot like a relationship of some kind. (or have already been agonising about that via fighting and arguing, depending) (Obviously this comes after Isa "Emotionally intelligent enough to keep a lid on the jealousy" Beau has managed to use that big brain of his to Not just go Scream somewhere on the daily because oh godddd they keep talking like theyre suicide-baiting each other jesus chriiist. is it overstepping his boundaries to bring that up?? god)

This, taking a bunch of the tension out of Loop and Isabeau's relationship (Since I imagine Loop is a. being weird for the obvious reasons and b. feeling kinda guilty about 'getting in the way of' Siffrin and Iseabeau), allows them to actually get close in a normal friend way. (I think an interesting turning point could be Isabeau actually taking Loop's side in an argument vs Siffrin, which would absolutely break Loop's brain. Especially if it's an argument that matters. Like what do you mean he isn't just going to play favourites. What?)

Then Isabeau, just actually open minded and charmed by Loop (and maybe even somewhat at Siffrin's suggestion?) tries to close the final open side on the polyamory triangle here and that's the final straw for Loop on "This lie by omission is too unethical to keep up, this is just actually sick and wrong. I can't do this while he doesn't know who I am." Though. Obviously it probably goes. Very poorly with emotions high like that. And the added element of several months of deceit. Getting dark here for a second but that dagger is going MISSING and so are THEY for a hot minute.

Then yaaay everything works out in the end 👍 yippieee!! all it took was maybe a lot of harrowed recontextualisation of all the weird shit your new friend said and did when it turns out they're your old friend. It's fine.

But yeah. this is basically the context all of my postcanon doodles have existed within? And those exist to give other people something to chew on. So this does too.

I suppose TL;DR: Imagine if sloopis almost fucking happens before isabeau knows who loop is. can you fucking imagine. can you imagine having to navigate that. nightmare.

*Yes this includes the implied cannibalism comic. Uhh. Comes part and parcel with headcanoning that Loop went way off the deep end similar to A5 Sif But Maybe Worse before giving in. Add weepy half-asleep confessions to murder wherever you see fit in your mind palace. 👍👍👍

**Re: Nille footnote. I don't have anywhere to put this besides here! I have some thoughts on Loop and Nille having an odd dynamic. I don't imagine Nille to be super gung-ho on trusting a bunch of adults (even if they are majority around her age) given their implied backstory. It's probably a big shock to the system, especially since Bambouche is a good couple hundred Kilometers up north from Dormont and these guys don't seem to have trains. She would've been unfrozen and without Bonnie for some time....

Which is to say: I think she's suspicious of them. I think she may be looking for excuses to distance herself, keep Bonnie safe. SO.... A new guy showing up? And antagonising the party? What do they know that I don't...? I should find out.

And since... Loop didn't ever know Nille, they have no ammunition or real reason to be cruel. Plus, if they're trying to stay on Bonnie's good side (SINCE... if Bonnie thought Loop was cringe they may as well kill themselves. In their mind.) they SUPER have no reason to antagonise Nille.

Mostly, they might be able to open up to each other easier than they can the rest of the party?

I feel like this resolves with Loop feeling compelled to apologise for what they and Siffrin let happen to Bonnie, though... Hmm... Depends on how you interpret Nille that they'd be glad nobody else had been told about that yet, or furious it had been secret this long. I lean toward the former.

Odysseus’s crew was not a gaggle of idiots, so stop acting like they were.

Yeah an actual rant since my last talk post was just me…. Screaming…. I don’t regret it but I wanted to give an actual rant. I’ve made a crew defense post like this before but this ones a lot longer and a bit more thorough. Its (kinda) a repost from a rant I made on tiktok except for some slight tweaks because I forgot some things and I can be MUCH more unfiltered on Tumblr.

I’ve seen so much of Odysseus “gentle parenting “ the crew and sure I can see how it would be funny but the people who think he was “gentle parenting” the crew as if they were children get on all of my nerves. Im gonna try to keep this not so focused not just on Eurylochus but on the crew as a whole. Eurylochus is not some child and neither is the crew. Im not saying the crew was always right but im also not saying that Odysseus carried.

This fandom kisses Ody’s ass and gives him credit for EVERYTHING. Yes, as a general it is extremely impressive to go to war with 600 men and have not one single death. Its amazing. But why are we discrediting the crew and giving all credit to Odysseus?

Breaking news; the crew weren’t just objects or mindless drones. They were people. Do you know how hard it is to sync up with 599 other people? THAT is impressive. If you struggle to work with 4 of your classmates in a group project imagine that times 150.

Why are we getting on Eurylochus when he looks to Odysseus after the cow— but when Odysseus suddenly goes “my brothers… why?” As if he didn’t just catch six bodies and tried to catch a seventh he gets a free pass? What?

Also for the love of all that is holy can we stop calling them big backs?

In an interview with Armando (Eury’s voice actor) he literally confirms that the crew had given up hope in thunder saga. Its LITERALLY canon. Though you wouldn’t even need him confirming it if you just listened to Eury in the damn song.

Putting it into perspective: 550 men have been lost, the captain just sacrificed six more, you are traumatized from the event considering how brutal it was the ship is still covered in red, the captain tried to kill another for calling him out, there is no food, you’re starving and/or suffering from scurvy, you’re STILL being chased by Poseidon (tbh I woulda given up after that), and home is lord knows how far away. You expect them to start cheering and shaking ass???

The crew was traumatized, suffering, and out of it when they ended up on Helios’s island and probably tuned out what Odysseus was saying until they saw the clouds and Odysseus breaking free. When Odysseus shuts down its okay but when the crew does its a problem? Idgaf they had every right to kill the cow. One zap is a thousand times better than prolonged suffering.

“Yeah but Odysseus hadn’t given up, why did they?” Well gee Susan, it’s almost like people are different. The crew gave up because they didn’t completely abandon their humanity like Odysseus was forced to.

“Well they opened the wind bag! That wasn’t fate!” Oh my good golly yall do not shut the hell up about that damn wind bag💔💔💔

Im not saying it was a great decision. It wasn’t. You could even argue it was a bad one. But it was fate that the wind bag would be opened. Use your peanut brain for five seconds.

BOTH times that Poseidon comes, Odysseus opens the wind bag to either escape or to fight. So if they blinded with Poseidon’s son, which is what angers him in the first place (NOT THE WIND BAG you dumb fucks💔) + Odysseus doxxed himself + they have a bag containing Poseidon’s storm, what does that equal?

to answer your question on the greninja post, ash greninja was created because they wanted ash to have a mega but didn’t want him to catch any older pokemon or bring back any of his older ones and the issue was he only had kalos mons(plus pikachu) which don’t have megas(besides diancie) so they just. gave greninja his own thing. and then they gave him a mega in journeys anyway

When you care so little about Clotted Cream that you forgot about a popular ship that he's part of lmaooo. I never really understood Clottedcier, it just feels really... nothing? Financier is his guard, she just takes her job really seriously. I admit that I haven't looked through the Odyssey arc for a really long time save for wanting to enjoy little fuel crumbs of HollyCacao so maybe I'm remembering wrong? But I don't remember any particular closeness between them. He's the stuck up politician and she's Secret Service basically. And I can understand the appeal of Public Figure x Guard, I just don't really feel anything with these two in particular. But more power to fans of it, y'all have fun. I prefer FinanChip personally

For one, Black Forest is reeeeaaaaallllyyyy not in any position to be in a relationship at all. She's mentally ill/unstable and a victim of cult brainwashing. Just feels a little sad and strange to impose a relationship on such a confused and vulnerable person. Girl needs a date with a good psychologist before anyone else lol

Second, I think people just kind of ran away with "Wedding Cake is very fond of all the brides" and "you're the most passionate bride I've ever worked with" and automatically made it a lesbian thing because of course they did lol. Just another show of "no one is able or allowed to care about other people outside of a romantic context" imo. Again, I like gay shit as much as the next person, but this is kind of a stretch. Wedding planning was always her dream job, she's just really happy that her dream came true and she can help couples plan their special day (and she probably feels closer to brides specifically because a) she herself is a woman, women relate better to each other on principle b) weddings are often catered more to the bride than the groom (not necessarily a good thing, just how it is), c) the wedding dress is a key component of wedding planning and Wedding Cake obviously cares a lot about acquiring a good dress for the bride. Hell, look at her own attire. She's very feminine and is wearing a high-quality, formal dress herself. She must already love fashion and dresses even outside of her work)

Finally, as far as Wedding Cake knows, Black Forest is already happily engaged to a person she loves. She doesn't know it's a cult thing, she doesn't know Black Forest is brainwashed. She thinks she's just helping another bride plan her special day. Why would Wedding Cake pursue her if she thinks Black Forest is already taken? Are you guys saying Wedding Cake is a homewrecker? Lmao. Black Forest wouldn't have her anyway, she's completely batshit insane over the Witches and probably wouldn't even register someone else being interested in her

i decided to try out star trek online and live out my trekkie fantasies the other day. my first run in with the game was eons ago at a thrift store, but my current laptop is lacking a cd player, so i couldn't really try it out for sure. i don't know if it would work anyways considering it's a copy of the game from, what, 2010? what would be the point of that.

the first star trek game i ever played was the TNG game for the snes. i emulated it on my shitty old laptop. it was unfortunately a bust, cause i had no idea what i was doing.

speaking of tng, before i do my review, did you know a certain somebody used to make tng edits? can you recognize that flute sample?

anyway, my best friend dave (who doesn’t even have a tumblr) brought it up, assuming i’d never heard of star trek online. TCH! who do you think i am, you simpleton? naturally, i had to flex on him. whipping out the cd like some kind of seasoned star trek online veteran just to make a mockery of him. but really, the joke is on me, because let’s be honest, no one takes a self-proclaimed star trek online expert seriously.

so, i downloaded it off steam and ignored all the mixed reviews! i didn't stay in character creation for too long, but i tried to make him resemble me as much as possible. that's because my character's name is john kirk. he is john tiberius kirk.

the second thing i figured out about this game, is that if you walk into an object and believe in yourself you can actually gyrate with skill akin to that of a zumba instructor. so, i immediately had to gyrate next to captain isaac carrot to put him in his place.

it was a massacre for garrett. if i was you, "captain", i'd hang my head in shame and go back to being an ensign from being so hopelessly outmatched. it was also at this point i remembered that i could record my gameplay, which countered my ability to remember that my computer's cpu couldn't properly cool itself and i hadn't turned on my laptop fan. so amidst scanning some debris, my computer shat itself and died.

AN: This took way too long to write. I’ll probably edit any mistakes later, just wanted to finally post this.

And always, this is crack treated seriously. This is just for fun and shits and giggles. Excuse any ooc moments and all of that.

Also never been to a gala or fancy party before so I didn’t think any of this is accurate but it fits with the crack treated seriously part of the fic.

Jason laughed a bit at Danny’s insistence of it being a joke. “Relax, just messing with you.” This guy had peaked his interest before he even knew he was Masters’ godson. Maybe is was a good thing he came to the gala after all.

“So tell me why the godson of Vlad Masters is living down in Crime Alley.” He looked Danny up and down subtly, he really was more put together than the times he saw him out on patrol and doing laundry. He watched as Danny took a second before answering.

He shrugged, “It’s simple.” Jason took note of how his tone changed when it was just them talking, it was the same tone from the day they talked in the laundry room.

“He’s a fruit loop and I don’t like him.”

Jason held back a laugh. “A fruit loop?”

“Yes. A fruit loop. He’s not as bad as he used to be when I was younger but still.” Jason made a mental note of him saying “not as bad as he used to be”. That caught his attention. “But now I gotta know why one of Bruce Wayne’s sons lives in Crime Alley as well.” Danny teased slightly.

He should’ve expected that he would have to answer too. “Just a falling out with him and the rest of my family but we’re trying to reconnect I guess.” It was a small lie. Not the complete truth and not a complete lie.

“I get that. Had a similar thing with my parents. At least yours is trying.” It was obvious that the last part was more joking than actually anything serious.

This guy was interesting. Jason didn’t like Masters at all, both he and Bruce were suspicious of him but Danny didn’t seem to be anything like him. He was actually kinda funny, nice and personally, Jason thought he was a bit dorky.

Talking with Jason was better than avoiding Vlad or any of the other gala guests. Danny always forgot how boring these things got after a bit. At least it seemed that Jason was getting bored too. He would rather talk with him than continue to avoid Vlad.

He wasn’t too surprised that Jason also had family issues, it was kinda obvious with how he and Bruce were silently interacting when Vlad had called him over.

Even with him being interesting to talk to, Danny still wanted to leave the gala. He thought it would’ve been fun to mess with guests but Gothimites were used to weirdness, he could maybe at least explore but people kept trying to talk to him and now he was kinda stuck with Jason cause it was still kinda small talk.

“You wanna get out of here?” He asked without thinking. Did he mean to say it? No but if it got him out of the gala, meant as well try. Jason didn’t look like he wanted to be at the gala any longer either.

There was a minute of silence, it looked like he was weighing his options. “Eh, why not. Anything could be better than this.” Danny smiled, glad that he agreed. Now to figure out where to go but mainly how to sneak away.

It would be easy leaving the room but most entrances and exits outside still had press and paparazzi. He could easily just go invisible and intangible but didn’t trust Jason enough to do so.

Danny had snuck out of galas before but that was when it was just him and way more low profile types of galas. “Lead the way out? Like I said, never been to a gala here before.”

He got a small chuckle and an eye roll at that but it seemed like he was going to lead him out.

Danny wasn’t too bad of company. It was certainly better than just staying by Bruce and Jason jumped at the chance of knowing him better and hopefully figuring out why he had that strange sense of familiarity from before they had even talked.

He was glad to have been trained by the bat and that Dick told him about all the unseen exits. “Uh huh.” He said a bit sarcastically before grabbing his hand. “C’mon, follow me.”

He led him through the crowds of people, avoiding anyone who would ask questions. Occasionally he’d look and see Danny following closely behind. He looked like a lost dog trying to keep up. Jason thought it was a little funny.

Soon he dragged him out of where the gala was being held and into a dimly lit hall. Fuck, which way did Dick say to turn from here?

“Where to now?” Danny asked, his tone suggesting that he knew well that Jason hadn’t much of a clue at the moment. Sure enough when he looked at him, he had a small teasing grin. It was slightly annoying but he felt his heart skip a beat.

Fuck.

Jason quickly decided to just push that down and aside. No need to dwell on it even though he knew he would over analyze as soon as he got back to his apartment. Right now though, he just needed to remember which turn he was supposed to take in the hall.

Apparently he dwelled on it a little longer when he saw Danny was no longer behind him but now in front and turning right. “C’mon man. Let’s just go this way.” He heard him call out as he disappeared into the hall on the right.

He sighed and reluctantly followed. It wasn’t the most logical choice but it was the more entertaining one.

“Alright, I’m coming.” Jason followed where he went and caught up. “Just don’t get us lost.”

The only response he got from Danny was a shrug and crooked grin.

You’re sitting in your bed, your knees close to your chest as you hug them for comfort, your heart feeling so heavy, with your tear stained face. You just couldn’t stop crying while you and rin’s song blast in your headphones.

Its been 3 months till he broke up with you. you never knew such a heated argument could end up in a break up? you were devastated, I mean you planned your whole future with him in your head? well at first you didn’t really care, Honestly you felt nothing. it was just a break up who cares?then it started to hurt a bit, going to the places you guys always went to, the memories reeling back in your mind, then it was the smaller things, the keychain he got you from an arcade you begged him to go, his pen he gave you after you lost yours, and of course the sweater he forgot to ask for it back.

You never wanted things to end like this. He was your dream guy in your small pathetic life, yet he never really judged you for the weirdest things you do. He knew your schedule, your interests, your favourite flower, he even would stay in school for a few hours to wait for you and for once in your life you felt like you were deserving of something, and for the first time you wanted to stay.

Now that stupid wide smile of his when you first waved at him wont disappear in your mind. You wished he never changed, Was it your fault? you didn’t know how his conversation with sae went, so you couldn’t say anything about it. But it hurts. he was just a shell of someone he used to be, you wanted to make him laugh again, you wanted to make him smile while you make another stupid joke. You wanted to love him.

his contact name never changed. how could you anyways? everytime you saw his contact it stinged your heart yet you still can’t let go. So you muster all your courage sniffling and taking a deep breath before clicking on the message button as you type your paragraph apologising as you sob more with every word.

Sent. the regret starts to pour in, the embarrassment fills your heart. You did this for the 3rd time already, Begging him to take you back, you closed your phone throwing it off to the side of the bed, not wanting to see if he responded yet. Though you still picked it up every few seconds to see if he responded. Nothing. You check again. Nothing. Again?. Nothing. it went on till you saw the "delivered" changing to "Seen". as you open the chat there was three dots. as you anxiously wait for his response. you closed your phone and brushed your teeth to ease your mind.

You came back from the bathroom, "ting!" a sound emerged from your phone and you ran to open the chat, just to see its some stupid instagram notification, Then another notification appeared. His response! you clicked on it as you read "Im sorry that i made you feel that way, it was not my intention to hurt you. But you know i have to focus on soccer right now, and you haven’t done anything.. it’s just that i moved on. you should probably move on too, we can still be friends though..?" … Friends?

You've mentioned disliking bad translations no matter whetter official or fan-made, and gave the example of Mink in the DMMD fanpatch. Can you elaborate? Did he get the Madarame treatment?

Yes, that's true. And it doesn't even have to be bad in terms of adding too many cuss words or country-specific slang or changing POV or anything else. All in all, the DMMD fan patch did follow the original narration viewpoint (since it's always been in first person) both in the first game and in the sequel. And yes, there are some slang and cursing in those too (like referring to Clear's pockets as Mary Poppins) but it's still kept to a manageable level that while I noticed it, it never truly bothered me.

Though back when Tumblr was still big, as I got into DMMD, it came to my attention as I checked tags and posts of other DMMD fans that the fanmade patch - which I am grateful to one way or another for getting me into the VN - really and I mean really had it out for Mink.

One thing is definitely certain, Mink's route in the first game is definitely not the easiest to swallow (like Madarame's) and his ending in the fandisc sequel does address the why behind that. Whether fans like or dislike him at the end of that is for them to decide.

But the fan patch team loathed Mink enough that they considered leaving him out of the translations entirely. When they eventually decided to include him, they basically had him talk very rudely (when he is to the point and forthright, but there's a difference between that and him spewing harsh and condescending insults), alter the narration (which again, is from Aoba's POV) to make the whole story sound like a classic case of Stockholm Syndrome (which let me stress, is nothing of the sort and is already its own can of worms) - both of which they ramped up to eleven in the sequel, where the two are meant to clear the air between them and find closure about what happened and then truly get together afterwards - all so that the fans can view him with the same disdain that they have of him.

It all boils down to "I see the plot/characters this way, and I will let that view affect how I word the text so that I can influence the readers/players to think similarly of it". Which what the fan patch team did with Mink, and in a way, also what the localization did with Slow Damage, since now Towa gets characterized as what others have called an "edgy gooner" when that's missing the point of his story entirely (which is also part of the overarching plot). While that could still have happened even with a good translation that was released from the beginning, since fandoms like to reduce characters to a meme/joke, for better or worse.

Back to Mink, there are a few other posts here on Tumblr (I doubt it is all of them) that point out how his route was tampered with on purpose, and I'll just share those links here for your reference: Link 1 | Link 2 | Link 3. Someone even attempted to retranslate Mink's route in the first game (alas, it never got completed, but it does manage to cover at least half of his route).

Needless to say, it got bad enough that many have suggested reading the alternate fan translation of the sequel (which was made before the fan patch came out) instead, since it isn't prejudiced against Mink. Now I do wish to make it clear here that the point about what happened with Mink's route isn't about having the characters like/dislike Mink, but about the importance of not letting one's bias affect the text, something that can be ignored in both fanmade and official translations.

Ah, I almost forgot, but yeah. In a way, Madarame got a similar treatment. Madarame talks bluntly and casually as well, but the Japanese text doesn't have him cuss every sentence or every other sentence. And whatever crudeness is in the text in other routes, it definitely is a lot more magnified in Madarame's route. And all even that aside, there's also one context that was notably changed in the very opening his route.

Like in that last sentence. From the original, you'd think that he's denying that he's acting for the sake of revenge and dismisses that as pathetic. Though the patched version implies that he does seem intent on revenge (even if he doesn't say it to Towa or denies it to Toono's face when Toono asks if that's what he's been doing) and that it isn't pathetic to do. Of course, this is just one example. And it doesn't change that even with a professional translation, Madarame's route is still also the bleakest and the one that's most tough-as-nails, but context always matters.

If anything, a good way of showing how the patch and the localization differ would be to record both versions from beginning to end and play them side by side.

Silent Hill 2 update: I have now recorded the first two hours of gameplay with commentary, which gets us through the jukebox puzzle reveal, and I’m going to be able to record that quest through our arrival at Woodside Apartments tomorrow, knock on wood. I’m working on a timestamped list of topics and some additional things I forgot to mention, because the commentary is a bit... information dense. It’s like, some new Fact every minute or two. This is mostly just because South Vale has a lot of easter eggs and lore per square inch. By the time we get to the apartments, it won’t be like, “Apartment 215 was named after the author Fifteen McCarthy” or anything, so it should calm down by that point.

But man, I was so jittery. I calmed down once I had some monsters to whack. That said, the frame rate was WILDING OUT, which ended up being pretty funny toward the end so I’ll allow it, but I can’t figure out why the game is this fussy this early on. I’ve checked my graphic settings, which are still the Optimized for PC settings that I found. 

("Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly" did give me some comfort.)

Meanwhile, Ian did his first livestream commentary this past Wednesday, focusing at first on the music of Silent Hill 2.

(In Kiwami the Shimano portrait says that his family was established in 1987 and I was like “???” So I looked it up and at least according to the fan wiki he was a captain for Dojima until he started a family under the Dojima umbrella in 1985 and eventually split off to form his own free-standing family in ‘87) so if we’re assuming Majima swore in around the same time as Saejima when he was approx 15/16, he would have sworn under Dojima and followed Shimano to his family when it formed. It’s easy enough to say that Majima went to Dojima because it was the biggest toughest family with the biggest toughest badasses, but just for the sake of a “Majima followed Saejima to the Yakuza” hc it’s worth interrogating why he wouldn’t be in the same family, and I just kinda like the idea Sakai’s family was so small and insular because they stress how big he was on oldschool honour and accountability, so he’d be choosy about only recruiting guys that he wanted to take responsibility for.”

i think you have a good point about sasai being more picky with his recruits and thus having a smaller family btw, i hadn't considered that before. and i need to chew on the knowledge that majima joined dojima's family first... i could see shimano still being the *reason* he joined, but i can also see shimano taking a liking to him after he'd already joined up under dojima. i'm still curious about what his main motivation for joining was. the way it usually goes with the rgg guys, they're moved by their patriarch's "manliness" and it inspires them to follow them anywhere, but i feel like majima's relationship with shimano is an outlier in this sense. as in, i think he was impressed by slightly different things in shimano, not his dedication to honoring old school yakuza values. at the same time, i can't imagine majima being in it solely for pragmatic reasons like getting money. i think he mainly saw shimano as someone to model himself after, much like nishitani, lee and sagawa in y0. much to think about either way

the ceo of ooneko over on Twitter probably already said this but I’m just going to word barf my own thoughts about anime vs game ooneko

so it’s been known that the anime and game depictions of the characters have changed a bit. Mostly Osoto’s depiction, which in turn changes his dynamic with Neko.

as I said before, Osoto’s presence in the anime feels like a constant threat. The inclusion of ep4 along with how graphic it is (imo) hits the point of him being someone who can kill without lifting a finger. I initially thought that they downplayed his crimes because they called it assault rather than rape (for his past victims not ep4) but maybe it’s just a censorship for television. (Same with when Neko had a flashback about a school teacher “hurting” a student. It was SA.)

in the games, I used “Loki in the Avengers Tower” to describe Osoto and honestly, Neko just treats him like A Guy and knowing he’s a criminal just feels like an inside joke between them. Or something. Like she’d go over and ask him banal questions, info dumps her love for idols, when she proposes the game to get him to play piano it’s in good humor.

The thing about chapter 6 is Neko goes to Osoto to ask if there were any records of her name showing up after her stabbing. Osoto was the one to give her good news, that she’s Not Dead. She was in such a good mood. So discovering that he was the one that stabbed her was more of a shock and more betrayal.

(Also forgot to mention if Osoto getting cut by Kyoko in chap4 was anything. Neko being worried about him and having him patched up by Atori and then the three “bonding” over romance talk. Maybe Neko establishing her ideal poly romance really meant for OsoAtoNeko to be real.)

The pool scene in the anime apparently is a reference to Sherlock and Moriarty, which, I wouldn’t know because the only Moriarty I know is voiced by Saito Soma. Anyway, I guess the anime was trying to play up that scene but make it Not Entirely Serious with the guests walking in like “what the fuck are they talking about”.

But in a way, having that scene just makes it all the difference because in the game, after Neko finds out, she wasn’t sure how she would face Osoto. When she does, she’s surprised that they’re still talking like normal. “Not like a baddy vs a goody”, which the anime is trying to depict.

Someone’s post on tumblr said that Osoto shoehorning Holmes and Moriarty is lame but I think it’s supposed to be ironic because Neko wouldn’t call herself Holmes, it’s Osoto doing that. I don’t know exactly what kind of rivalry the actual characters had, but we’ve been know that Osoto is a criminal so it’s not like he’s someone we have to chase down and catch.

The same post also said they weren’t developed enough in the past episodes. I can’t say for ep 6-7 because those aren’t chapters in the game that I can compare, but Osoto shows up enough to make Neko go “ugh this guy again” and that was pretty much kind of their relationship, so I don’t really see how you can’t say it’s not developed, it’s just more like it’s not supposed to be the typical Detective vs Criminal relation.

Ep 6-7 were weaker in terms of interaction, ep 5 has Osoto “actively” helping Neko “solve” a case and ep 8 she calls on him for medical help and challenges him for a favor. I guess ep 10 having him help her with the schedule was a scene, but I think they needed a segue for Neko to go “we could be friends in the real world”.

Anyway, I’m an anime enjoyer, so I like a lot of the things they did so spruce it up for non game players, which is what it should be, I think an anime Should be watchable stand-alone for people who have never seen the original source. It’s just a matter of if it still connects, if they’d still make sense, but since I’ve already played the games it’s hard for me to judge.

Top 5 movies set in the present and top 5 period films :)

Hi!!! I got this ask and forgot every movie I have ever loved (and will probably remember them all as soon as I hit post). It also reminded me painfully of how inadequate my cinephile culture is; there are so many classics that I'm almost certain I will love if I watch them and that would deserve the spotlight so much!

So let's make these lists about interesting movies that I think are good as movies, and not think much if they are truly The BestTM. I'm also omitting Austen and other adaptations I already talk too much about.

"Contemporary films" (set in the present is a complicated concept. I'm picking them as "the narrative happens sometime contemporary to the movie's original release date"):

5. Music & Lyrics (2007):

This is technically a romantic comedy, but its strength relies on its love for music, its humor about the music industry, and a take on 80s nostalgia that is neither surrendered idealization nor complete mockery. It's one of the few movies where I actually like Hugh Grant, and the score is so well done! My one gripe really is that I think the movie would have been so much better if the leads have remained platonic? Sometimes I like to pretend they did.

4. Dead Man Walking (1995):

This is one of those serious, controversial movies professors pick for university discussions, in this case, the one about the death penalty. The movie tries (and I believe succeeds) to address without "solving" or dismissing the relationship between our horror at heinous crimes, justice for the victims and their pain, and the value of all human lives. Susan Sarandon is as always majestic in this one.

3. National Treasure (2004):

Tumblr loves National Treasure, but I love it specifically because to me it somehow captures the thrill, the exotic mystery (without gross Orientalization!) AND the nonsense of a classic Jules Verne novel -and Verne was one of the staples of my childhood- in a way that no Verne movie adaptation I have ever watched manages to capture.

2. State of Play (2009):

This one is mostly an excuse to cheat, because while the movie is a very solid political thriller (you know, one of those "you might enjoy even if you are not a fan of the genre), the original British TV series it is adapting is better. And both have great casts (Russell Crowe is probably more solid than Cal Macaffrey on the same role, but David Morrissey does a much better job than Ben Affleck. So, it goes both ways, you see).

Hot Fuzz (2007):

I have heard this one being called "the most intelligent stupid comedy ever made", and honestly, fitting description. I have joked before about this being my comfort movie and how funny that is because it is the gory story of a police officer being kicked out of his beloved job and sent into a town where everyone mocks and gaslights him and then the back end of the movie is a non-stop action sequence... but, listen, it is funny, it is, somehow, heart warming, you can tell everyone is having a ball, the editing is amazing, the pacing is just right, so many set ups and they all pay off, the story is satisfying, the characters -specially the main lead- are likeable, and their arcs also satisfying.

Period films:

5. Oscar (1991):

This is a very silly comedy set in the 30s, adapted from a play and you can tell, but it is a riot, and in my opinion one of the best Stallone roles ever. It makes me wish he had done more comedies in this style. It also has the always charming Marisa Tomei and the always welcome Tim Curry.

4. The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain (1995)

Another instance of a movie where Hugh Grant does not annoy me, it's basically what says in the tin and the right kind of thing if you enjoy the typical British period drama of beautiful landscape, small town shenanigans and restrained romance.

3. The Mask of Zorro (1998):

Much of what I said about National Treasure applies here, except that it is not at all silly, and it has many moments of great pathos besides being a really good adventure/superhero movie.

2. To Walk Invisible (2016):

This is a biopic of the Brontë sisters, just covering their peak years of authorial activity, to trace a portrait of their personalities and life situation. While my knowledge of Bronteana is not super extensive, from the little I have read of them in general, plus Elizabeth Gaskell's The Life of Charlotte Brontë, I feel like this was carefully and lovingly done, without heavy editorializing or overdramatization (I'm staring at you, Emily (2022)), or pitting the sisters against each other. There's a scene of Emily reciting her poetry to Anne in the moors that just got me in the feels.

Master and Commander: the Far Side of the World (2003)

There are few genres I'm as disinterested in as war epics, and few movies I love as much as I love Master and Commander.

It was harmed by coming out the same year as The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, but it is, and what I'm going to say will sound blasphemous to some, the better movie of the two. It is a war epic, and a slice of life film. It's the story of a friendship between two very different men and the tensions their personalities and job at sea bring. The cast is top notch, down to child actors. Some of the production details are insane. They made rope specifically for this film because the way modern rope is turned doesn't fit well with old rigging techniques. The cast spent many days together at sea learning the basics of how to manage the ship and work in their ranks and the way sailors and officers would relate to each other. The immersion this all creates is also insane. The sound design was marvelous as well, and the score truly inspired (I want to kiss the person who picked Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis as one of the main features of a 2000s movie adapting a 20th century novel about the Napoleonic Wars, the same way 19th-20th century Ralph Vaughan Williams picked up a tune by a 16th century composer to do his thing, to establish this thematic connection between past and present and the ways we look at and make History).

If you watch only one movie on this list, watch this one. It's worth it.

She's somebody who would cofmort you in an objective but warm way while also try to joke around so you won't feel like you're being nagged at (good grief, i cried more while she did that lol) ALSO A SIMP FOR DIMITRIII ‼️‼️
