First, my pfp (main blog) is her as well as can be made in the picrew in my bio. She typically wears some kind of fruit, berry, etc. as earrings (not plastic, literally the plant). Bubbly and expressive, you'd be hard pressed to find someone who can spend any amount of time with her and not have both come out laughing. Witty, every joke made is answered with another.

Does not handle loneliness well at all. She quickly becomes exhausted and depressive within only a few weeks of living alone (remember these are immortal characters and at any point I'm talking about Freya she's anywhere between a few centuries to a few millenia old. A few weeks is not a lot) had she never married, she'd have lived with her siblings her whole life (which she kinda does anyways given how royalty works but whatever).

Her greatest fear is losing something forever. Even the smaller joys she fears for. She was around even before the Blessed Years, as a Nuthri, and remembers that whole age; the idea that the joys of the Blessed Years were not permement had never crossed her mind, and she was first introduced to the concept with her sisters murder. After the fall of the Blessed Years, she became terrified of losing what she had: she already lost Nerquam, then Aegir went to his limbo, then she was doomed to separation from society, then she had a child with Liam who she got to watch die as an infant, and so on. Liam at that point in time was her only real anchor. Even aside from people she is hyper protective of what she owns and what she makes.

Her Skill is weaving, though it was almost music; she was just as good at and loved both equally. Nerquam, however, chose music, so she went with Weaving.

Loves the idea of reading, hates actually sitting down with a book, and mostly only does so when someone (Liam usually) is reading with her.

After the release of the 13th book last March, The Ghost of a Crow, Chisato also announced that one more book will be published to complete the Yatagarasu series. One or two more collections of short stories will follow and Yukiya and co. will finally say goodbye from her pen.

The reason is the author will embark on a new project.

Chisato Abe has a new book that will be released at the end of the month.

Titled, “The Green Gem of the Empress,” the blurb and the corresponding synopsis are promising already, with illustrations by Kokuno.

“In this harem, you must not trust anyone.”

Naomi, a young girl, is suddenly invited by the emperor who rules the wind spirits with the words, "Why not try to become my favorite consort?" The emperor's harem includes an empress and concubines, and a necklace adorned with a green gem, resembling the color of the empress's eyes, called the "Empress's Emerald," always glittered on his chest. While questioning why she was chosen, Naomi discovers that the harem harbors a big secret...

The beautiful Dragonfly Emperor, Sirius, from the insect clan, versus the Peacock King, Noah, from the bird clan, and Naomi, the girl, in between.

Naomi, a girl from the northern lands, the realm of the earth spirits. Once left homeless after her house was burned by a fire dragon, she was taken in by the Peacock King and raised as an apprentice to a court lady at the Birdcage Palace, an eastern castle.

We also have Iris, the former wife of the Peacock King, and now the empress, Freya, and Tia. There’s also a eunuch and the educator of the apprentices. If you read their profiles and look at their images, their similarity to the Yatagarasu anime versions are uncanny. But that’s just me. Both the emperor and the king resemble Wakamiya. The characters feel like two halves of him. And then Naomi, who hails from the north, like Yukiya.

Naomi, primarily a feminine name from Hebrew, means pleasant, beautiful or gentle. However, the name is unisex in Japanese, but mostly used by women.

It is also interesting that Chisato relegates the readers once again with a story in a harem. “It is a story filled with things the author loves, written in the way I wanted. I hope it becomes a story that includes ‘love’ not only for myself but also for everyone who reads it.”

Profiler (2000) - Dr. Sam Waters is a detective with the Violent Crimes Task Force, a federal agency which often works with the FBI, ATF, and other crime-solving agencies. The series starred Ally Walker and Robert (KOLYA!) Davi. Joe is in four episodes in the fourth season (12-15) but the link is to the series playlist.

Sherman's March (2000) - Pete Sherman (JF) is a city man who gets relocated to the small North Carolina city Durham to help build up a new firm. On the way he struggles to adjust to the new location but hope hits when he meets Becca. First Monday (2002) - Each Supreme Court term begins on the first Monday in October. Currently, the Court's evenly divided between conservatives and liberals. Moderate Justice Joseph Novelli has just joined them. The show follows their cases and lives. Joe was a series regular; the link is to a playlist for all 13 episodes of the show.

Judging Amy - S4 E7 Damage Control (2002) - Amy hears the case of a young boy charged with obstruction of justice for not revealing the name of the man who took pornographic pictures of him.

Tru Calling - S1 E3 Brother's Keeper (2002) - Harrison is accused of killing Andrew (JF), the husband of his new girlfriend, Sarah. Andrew asks Tru for help when he's in the morgue, and the day starts once again. Tru has to prevent Andrew from being killed while she asks herself if her brother was capable of shooting him.

Teaming up with agent Brendan Dean (Joe Flanigan) they attempt to foil an assassination plot, however she's been ordered not to reveal her powers to her new partner.

111 Gramercy Park (2003) - Unsold series pilot about wealthy New Yorkers who live in an upscale apartment building, and the various maids, nannies and maintenance people who work for them. Gaffsie has uploaded this in four parts - part one, part two, part three, part four.

Women's Murder Club (2007-2008) - Longtime friends gather off-the-clock to solve cases, despite personal issues. DA Jill has troubled past, ME Claire is dealing with a husband newly in a wheelchair, and tough Detective Lindsay finds herself working under her ex-husband. Blurb <3: Raph met Ruine when he was 13 and she was 12. She had been a backup experiment if something went wrong in Draxums original plan (Dw they share NO DNA whatsoever) when the lab blew up she was found by a snake yokai who raised her till she was 12, which was when she was found by the turtles and April of course! They took her in and gave her a home since she didn’t seem to have one, from then on she’s been living with them and slowly building more of a relationship with them. She’s stubborn, kindhearted, and a bit hard on herself- but she’s always there for the people she cares about! Raph developed a crush on her after them being friends for about a year and a half and eventually they both talked to each other about it and ended up becoming a couple, Leo likes to tease the both of them about it and Mikey likes helping them plan dates and things like that. Ruine is a combination of Yokai, turtle, and a bit of human as well, she does have mystic powers, which is the ability to control water around her- or any liquid really- she’s not all that good at it yet, but she’s getting there. Her weapon of choice is a twin pair of Kunai- she’s a leatherback sea turtle and stands at about 6’7. And that’s about all I can think of TvT

How they met? After bugging their adoptive father about wanting to help more with errands through the Leyline portals that connect every major location and level of the Underground, Freya took it upon themselves to do a task their father had been putting off for weeks. 

They ported to the New York underground to find the researcher who intended to meet with their Father to hand over some new medical products. After a bit of convincing they received the products, just needed to get home. Problem was, Big momma had her underlings searching for anything green and turtle-like. Wearing a big backpack and being green, they were mistaken for a turtle and thus chased down, unable to throw them off, they rounded a corner sharply only to collide into a wall, phasing through. 

With no where to go, and now exposed to the human world, they sort cover in the sewers, which set off donnies security system. LUCKILY before “dispatching” of Freya (he said he would, but totally doesnt have the guts for that), he recognized their voice as a online friend he has called “XxFloral_FridayxX”, who he met from a botany group and honestly sort of had a crush on. and the rest is history ig. They start officially dating years later due to Donnie being stubborn and Freya being Oblivious.

Upcoming Book Spotlight: The Gentleman and His Vowsmith by Rebecca Ide

There are so many exciting book releases coming in 2025! Since there are so many that it's difficult to keep track of, I decided to start a series highlighting some that I think readers should be excited about.

These will be mostly queer books and I'll try to focus on books that don't already have a lot of buzz. All previous and future posts in this series can be easily found in this tag!

Up first is a a queer historical mystery set in the Regency era:

The Scottish Boy by Alex de Campi - 5/5 stars

This book managed to rip my heart out at least 3 times. I loved it. Medieval enemies-to-lovers slow burn; very romantic. Kinda read like fanfiction at times but in a good way. 10/10 would read a follow-up love story about Arundel and Captain Wekena. If you like Captive Prince, give this one a try.

Reforged by Seth Haddon - 4/5 stars

Pretty good bodyguard romantasy. Ironically CS Pacat blurbed this one (another am-I-in-the-matrix moment). The world was interesting and I enjoyed the politics, though they're definitely not as complicated as other SFF politics I've gone feral over (see: Captive Prince, Winter's Orbit, A Memory Called Empire). I ordered the sequel after I finished this.

A Power Unbound by Freya Marske - 5/5 stars

Where do I start? I love, love, LOVE A Marvellous Light. It's one of my favorite books ever. None of the rest of the books in the trilogy could live up to it, really, because it's so good. You'll notice I rated this one 5 stars though, because quite honestly I fell prey to a bit of The Academy Paying The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Its Due syndrome. I did love this book and thought it was better than A Restless Truth (which I still loved!) but part of that is, quite frankly, just due to the fact that I prefer m/m romance to f/f romance.

Anyway. This was such a good finale to the trilogy. I loved that the romance was a giant middle finger to purity cultists. I loved that one of the mains was Italian. I loved finally getting the story of what happened to the Alston twins. One thing I thought was really cool was how, viewed from the outside, you totally get why Edwin is such a loner. I really admire from a writing perspective how Marske pulled that off.

I feel like there's a lot to be said about what Marske was trying to SAY with this book, but I definitely need to reread it first before I can articulate any of it. The purity culture stuff is obvious, but the magic system too. I feel like Jack when he's almost able to connect everything in his mind into a bigger idea, but he can't quite get there.

I've got a special edition from Illumicrate coming, so I'll be rereading it when I have that.

The Guncle by Steven Rowley - 5/5 stars

I saw this in bookstores for years before I finally gave in and bought it. The blurb makes it sound insufferable and twee. Ignore the blurb. This was such a good book about grief and learning how to live again after terrible loss.

I Like Me Better by Robby Weber - 4/5 stars

At last I can stop getting the Lauv song stuck in my head whenever I set eyes on this book (it's stuck in my head as I type this). Pretty standard-issue YA, but it was cute and had a good message.

The Stagsblood King by Gideon E Wood - 4/5 stars

Another book about moving on from grief! This is the second book in a trilogy. When I was trying to determine if I wanted to read on beyond book 1, I scoured the internet for information about what happens in books 2 and 3. Eventually I decided, hell, I enjoyed book 1 well enough, even if what I want to happen in the rest of the trilogy doesn't happen, they're worth reading. SO, to that end, I will tell anyone looking for info that Tel gets romantically involved with a new man in this one, which, eh. I still want him to somehow end up with Vared. It was still quite good though.

In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune - DNF at pg 82

So funnily, we were at the bookstore the day I was about to start reading this, and my wife pointed out Ravensong (also by Klune) to me and said, "Do you have this one?" I made a face and said, "That's an older one of his books and I'm wary of his early work after that horrible Verania series. I don't think I've ever read an author as hit or miss as TJ Klune."

I wrote the above when I was 60 pages in and now I have officially DNFed this. Listen. You know how in Thor: Love and Thunder, Taika Waititi was clearly given free rein to do whatever he wanted, so all of his worst impulses made it to the final cut unchecked? Yeah. That's what this book is like.

Here's my Storygraph review: I see Klune is officially Too Big To Edit now. This book has exactly the same problem that his awful Verania series had—a joke that's funny at first but quickly grows tiresome when it's repeated five times per page. The emphasis on Victor's asexuality was also weird and read like Klune was just super proud of himself for writing an ace character.

Lion's Legacy by LC Rosen - 4.25/5 stars

Queer, YA Indiana Jones, but less #problematic. This book had some eerie similarities to my own archaeology adventure novel(s), which made me wonder half-seriously if I somehow know Lev Rosen? Anyway, I feared this would be very heavy-handed and not nuanced on archaeology's ethical dilemmas, since it's YA and also the current culture is to view said dilemmas as completely black and white with no nuance, but I was pleasantly surprised. It manages to examine that, queerness, and daddy issues, plus has time to be a genuinely fun and exciting adventure story. Highly recommend.

Too White to be Coloured, Too Coloured to be Black by Ismail Lagardien - 4/5 stars

I picked up this memoir in a bookstore at OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg as research for Six Places to Fall in Love, since Percy is coloured. A pretty brutal read, but good, and definitely good research. The author was a photographer and journalist through the most violent years of apartheid.

The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson - 5/5 stars

Two nonfiction books in a row?? This is the second book by Erik Larson I've read, the first being the excellent The Devil in the White City. I'm not, in general, all that interested in WWII when it comes to military history, but this book is about the day to day lives of Churchill and the people surrounding him (with brief stops to visit FDR and high-ranking Nazis sprinkled throughout). This is a very, very good book, and I recommend reading it if only as a reminder of the resilience and bravery of ordinary people under terrifying circumstances.

Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh - 5/5 stars

Holy shit. Holy shit is this book good. Imagine the love child of Lost, Person of Interest, and Battlestar Galactica, but queer and with multiverse shenanigans thrown in.

I need everyone to read this book. Now. Yesterday. Get to it.

At the moment, I'm reading A Power Unbound by Freya Marske. It took me a few chapters to sink in because muggins here didn't realise it was the 3rd in a series, I just got sucked in by the blurb in the shop - but I'm all caught up now and full engrossed by chapter ten. It's working as a standalone, and I think it's mostly a self contained story. It's about magicians in England set in Victorian times with a queer, sexy male romance plot which I'm loving.

Also shout out for my bookmark

Next up it's a toss up between The Cruel Prince, Serpant & Dove or round 5 of me attempting to read ACOTAR

Read recently: A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske

What I was looking for: I kept seeing the book for years and the blurb sounded interesting (though I was hesitant regarding the focus on NSFW content mentioned).

Thoughts:

The writing style drew me in pretty quickly and I had trouble putting the book down. I found the characters to be interesting, even though many of them were not likable.

While I did enjoy the romance subplot (although very insta-love/lust) and the sex scene was quite alright (at least in this book, I always understood who was doing what in which position all the time), for me it could have been left out completely and I still would have loved the story and would not have missed it (and I think the story would have worked perfectly with them being friends).

The paragraph above was written at after the first sex scene. Now, after the third, I am just annoyed-bored. These scenes are long. And you can completely skip them without missing anything from the story or characterisation. In my view, superfluous because I find the writing and mystery plot quite engaging as they are without the romance and sex.

Even while reading and having trouble putting the book down, I noticed that I guessed all the players and story beats the first time they appared (the main antagonist, the significance of the fairy tale, of course there are also three objects to be found). I cannot say why I still liked it. The writing, probably.

Some additional notes: Some great ideas (game on the pond at Edwin’s family home, resolution to the maze, the way the object was hidden). Favourite scene the interaction between the sisters Morrissey. Perfect showing of the power woman hold in a society that thinks they are beneath men.

Conclusion: Because the mystery plot still managed to intrigue me, I will continue reading the trilogy (now that I know to skip the sex scenes completely) but I am happy I got the books from the library.

dracula - brahm stoker 🩸

been one of my fave books since high school. exactly the kind of prose i like to read, long, flowery, takes 7 pages to describe the way dust looks in the moonlight. yes yes yes. also classic vampire book of course, lots of wolves, lots of victorian sexy scenes and blood transfusions, a cowboy. what isn’t there to love?

a marvelous light - freya marske 🌟

literally the book that got me back into reading. i owe robin and edwin so much. a historical fantasy that checks all of my boxes and gave me a favorite character i will never forget… edwin courcey my beloved… just in general the characters in this book are so so strong. if you like romance with fantasy and mystery elements u neeed to read this book, and the second and the third books too.

(also the sex is good AND is plot relevant. one of the best books ive read that uses the sex scenes to actually elevate the stakes and answer questions. brilliant)

if you’re a writer, read this book. it quite literally changed the way i thought about story, character, stakes, and structure. i reference this book all the time. please read it if you’re a writer. or if your a reader. or if you’re just like alive. it’s so good
