to the elevator they went, with vox pulling out his phone to check on the messages waiting, to see what everyone else was doing this time of day. plenty of other wheels turned within voxtek no matter the time, and he was quick to get to some of the things that seemed urgent.

the elevator opened and he stepped inside, pressing the button for the second below ground level floor, know as vox's space. everything underneath was his own territory, where the engineers worked on the building and where the mechanics worked. on top of that, the medical trials and more. but it was especially where his office and personal stations were. not that they got much use these days, with most of his times spent in meetings and public facing.

the elevator started down, and opened up to a workshop. no one ever came to the second floor of the sub levels, they were dedicated as invite only and required a specific code that vox put in, quick and practiced and covered so that angel couldn't make it out.

and so he led angel through the room, which was cluttered with various tools and materials, wood and metal both. an unfinished project or two on the workbench, all covered in dust. he hadn't earnestly been in here since the early 2000's, after all.

the door connected to the workshop led to a much more used room, his laboratory. everything here was medically kept pristine and sterile, with a medical grade examination chair in the middle of the room. this was where he performed his own upgrades, and some other tests. so of course, he had plenty of first aid here.

So Vox assumed he was just...going to follow him? It wasn't exactly like he trusted the guy. The hesitation was so clear, a few beats passing while Angel stood rooted in his spot. But the realization that he could get even more in trouble - this time with Vox - was something that clicked rather quickly. And while he knew the kind of abuse that Valentino dished out, he didn't know what to expect from the other Vee.

So he's quickly catching up, long legs making it rather easy to do so, sliding into the elevator with the media demon. Practically pressing himself into the corner, still clutching at his robe closure, eyes averted to the ground. Be as small as possible, despite being literally eight feet of sinner. Just keep his head down, shut the fuck up, and do what he was told. He had practice doing that.

He really didn't even think he looked that bad. Nothing that some antibacterial spray wouldn't fix. Maybe some ice. He more so felt stupid for thinking that he would be able to sneak around the penthouse that easily, especially considering Vox had eyes everywhere. At least this was giving him the space he was needing - even if it was incredibly discomforting.

⭐ He's ready to fight anyone who ever says a bad thing about you, 'the hero' doesn't see flaws unless it slaps him in the face. He's the type to always see something positive in his partners even despite a person's hardships, or physical and mental capabilities. Anyone who questions his reality of you is probably at the very least, going to be screeched at. It really depends on how long they egg him on for.

⭐ "Mr. Brightside"/"Mr. Silver Lining". He has a habit out of strategically trying to find a positive in every bad situation. It starts raining on a day he planned a beach trip? 🐤 The type to brag about his partner to anyone who would listen, his brother being the one to hear the most. It's to the point where Ludwig wouldn't be able to sit through a family dinner without you coming up at least once in conversation.

🐤 If you live with him, chores are split 50/50, he likes a clean home. He's set aside hours of the day where he just cleans his home, so it's best to either plan around that, or move to another room to stay out of the way. It's not that he wouldn't accept help, but he acts and says he doesn't really need it.

🐤 The type to stop arguments from happening by pulling the 'agree to disagree' card, or at the very least try to explain his views in a nice way if you haven't enraged him somehow. Always open to compromise. As much as he likes to start fights with other nations, he's not about to start that with you. You're supposed to be on the same side after all.

🐤 Hope that you like birds, since he's pretty attached to his. The bird may try to land on you, perch on your shoulder, talk to you (chirp at you), or simply rest near you on. You may want to start carrying birdseed with you.

thinking about the hq characters whenever I listen to the Warriors album that came out recently (I actually really like it - I watched the film as a kid when I shouldn't have and was so scared of it that this album has healed that fear a little - the bottle clinking is still the soundtrack for my nightmares though).

yes I have daydreamed the entire story, yes you will see snippets of it if this stays latched on my brain for long enough. for now, enjoy my match-ups of hq characters to the main gang members because I have been thinking non-stop about how easy it is to transfer their personalities over since the album was released. if you know nothing about The Warriors (book, film, or album), this will probs not make much sense but enjoy anyways!

The Gramercy Riffs = Aoba Johsai

Oikawa is absolutely Cyrus who believes in everyone to come together for a common dream (and in turn they build a belief in him). Iwaizumi is Masai and grieves so hopelessly for Oikawa. Aside from the devastating iwaoi, it's funny on a meta-level to imagine Oikawa saying "can you dig it?" when thinking about his serves like no they can't dig it babe !!! But we love you king

The Warriors = Karasuno

Ofc Karasuno are the stars of this daydream. Daichi is Cleon who helps Iwaizumi find the killer gang, obviously renamed Odysseus because that man just wants to go home (although he would defo believe in Oikawa's ideals and want to set things right, even at the expense of himself). Kageyama is his right hand man, Swan (renamed King ofc), and leads the gang back home - imagining Kageyama saying that he has a gang loyal to him makes me want to cry when thinking about hq, trust me and listen to the album whilst imagining Kageyama as Swan. It will change your life.

Suga is Cochise (renamed Polaris/Sirius bc symbolism), Asahi is Rembrandt, Noya is Ajax (we love a fighter who refuses to back down from a challenge), Tanaka is Cowboy (ofc he gives in to the Sirens), Tsukishima is Vermin/Snow (renamed to idk something like Clock bc he tsks a lot and it sounds like ticking), Yamaguchi is Fox and I cry every time I think about him as Fox (currently listening to that song and sniffling as I type). Hinata absolutely is Mercy (renamed Sunshine or something) and I cannot listen to A Light Or Somethin' without thinking about kagehina. They like and want each other instantly but can't express that in the 'right' way !! Kageyama lifting Hinata's face when he's embarrassed being seen by others and then kissing him??? Oh. oh the humanity.

The Rogues (killer gang) = Shiratorizawa or Johzenji

Ahhh the killers (no, not Mr Brightside). I love Luther's character because he is so unhinged for little reason which is why Tendou springs to mind BUT I cannot see Tendou in this. So my mind goes to Terushima (likes fun and pushes boundaries => obvs transfers to being a maniacal villain who kills for no reason (jk)).

The Hurricanes = Nekoma

I just love the idea of these guys acting as alley cats on skates. that is very funny to me. Also: Kenma on skates?? I love that visual. I fully believe he would hate it and either be the only one in the gang to walk or is dragged around by a leash so someone pulls him along on the skates OR Kuroo straight up carries him. Anyways: Kuroo is the gang leader, Kenma is the one who convinces them to let the Crows go because he uses one of his many braincells to realise that they absolutely didn't kill Cyrus (unlike many others in this story).

The Furies = Fukurodani

If you haven't listened to the song about them, please do. I get chills every time - they only come out at night?? Oh yes please, the ideas are flowing. These are the Night Owls with metal bats and painted faces. Bokuto is the leader but I can't imagine him to be willingly silent in a gang hmmm.

The Orphans = Inarizaki

Atsumu and Osamu as twin leaders of a weak but large gang makes me giggle okay? Hinata calling them chickens and trying to get into the Crows' gang? yeah i like that idea. Also the idea that Atsumu follows the vibe of the music album by letting the Crows walk through Orphan Town after flirting with Kageyama and Yamaguchi makes me laugh.

The Lizzies = The Sirens (aka any pretty people in hq not already mentioned in a gang)

Kiyoko is a given as the gang leader who Tanaka falls for and derails the Crows for a little bit. However, as the title suggests, the lines 'that pretty boy just bit me! he bit me! are you fucking kidding me?' are really catching onto my brain and I can't stop vocally stimming with it so maybe we follow ennotana and let Ennoshita bite Tanaka idk.

44. your favourite fantasy novel

The Poppy War trilogy by R. F. Kuang!!

R. F. Kuang is one of my favorite writers of all time, and she absolutely won me over last year when i read this trilogy. i already went on and on about it in another ask, but basically, imagine 20th century Chinese history in a fantasy setting heavily influenced by folk religions told through the eyes of Mao Zedong if he was a girl. it's sooooooo so good, has one of the best and most flawed and nuanced female protagonists i've ever read, plus it's just interesting to learn from! Kuang is getting her PhD in Chinese lit right now and she has a Master's in Chinese Studies, on top of being the child of immigrants from China, so she's well-versed in the history and weaves a lot of depth into the story with relation to topics like colonialism, genocide, classism and sexism, and religion

50. a book that made you cry a LOT

Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak!!

ok i'm actually lying because i don't remember actually crying about this book - in fact, i vividly remember being 13 and crying much more violently upon my first read of The Book Thief. here's the thing, though: there's a deep and personal sadness to this book that hit close enough to some of my own experiences that i haven't been able to read it since. i love Zusak's writing so much and this book was beautiful and heartbreaking and wonderful - and i will probably never read it again! i've reread books that made me cry before, but when one makes me feel this deep of an ache, i tend to avoid it, and this book hit just the right spot

71. your favourite LGBTQ+ fiction

I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston!!

ok this is kinda sad but i actually haven't read a lot of books that are specifically focused on LGBTQ+ issues, identity, etc. i've read more books where background characters are incidentally queer ofc because when i was the prime ya target audience that was where things were at the time, but thankfully the times have changed!! now if only my tbr list would catch up to match them lol

i really enjoyed this book though specifically because of its setting: a tiny private Christian school in the Bible Belt. that's literally the kind of school i attended for almost my entire life, so it was so fun to get to see that setting transferred into fiction, especially from an author who also attended a tiny private Christian school in the Bible Belt. and because of the author's familiarity with the subject, they did a great job of showing the kind of layers that environment has, and that queer kids do grow up in those environments and how that effects them.

plus, this one was a fun read because it's just this fun mystery, and the opening quote is from Mr. Brightside. that alone is enough of a reason to read something tbh

77. a book so useless that you could use it as a coaster

i would argue literally any required reading i had to do in high school, but it's absolutely tied between Silas Marner by George Eliot and Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan. i hate both of these books just as much as i did in high school because they are boring as hell, beat you over the head with their moralizing, and have the subtlety of a punch to the face with brass knuckles. hell, they aren't even worth being used as coasters. i think they'd ruin my mugs if i set them on them

thinking about the whole Kate Bush thing - i don't watch Stranger Things (but i've been *this* close a few times) nor am i on tik-tok or wherever the song continues to trend. but i’m feeling like reflecting on the age-old dynamic of  younger people discovering older media. feels like there are two pretty basic takes i want to avoid: 1. it's good that kids are discovering great old tunes! good for them. 2. these young'ns don't understand the impact of Hounds of Love! they've never even heard the classic OMD run! it's easy to say #1 is true (but too obvious to be really worth saying imo - comes off as...i dunno - lil too ‘i’m cool with the youth’ and an empty statement.) and #2 is what stuck up music snobs say. and it's mean, y’know? no one wants to hear ‘that’s not your music - that’s my music! you don’t get it!’. but i’ll take a contrary position - debate club style - i kinda have a lil sympathy for that mean music snob, if they saw a part of their uh ‘musical/subcultural niche’ being repurposed to soundtrack a million tik-toks of younger folks having fun...hey, i’ve never been there, but i could see feeling a certain way.  ofc i’m a solid ‘91 core millenial - this boy was raised on napster & 9/11. Kate Bush ain’t my generation, necessarily. i do love Running Up That Hill - unimpeachable track. i should admit that it seems every year since about 20 i’ve tried to get into Hounds of Love, and always seem to fail to. i keep giving it a shot every couple of years - it’s almost become a running joke between me and...myself (& Kate!). i’m not sure if dancing to the tune at highschool prom in ‘83 woulda elevated the tune...i think mediocre songs can be elevated by a time & place. Running Up That Hill doesn’t need context to elevate it. it’s timeless (so is Hey Ya! by Outkast - was a bop then and still is. uh people still like mr brightside, etc.). and i’m sure there are examples of a song being removed from it’s time & place elevating it - i can’t think of an example right now...outside of like, examples of sampling. there must be tunes that came back & were more relevant (spotify algorithm bringing deep cuts to the surface?).  okay, i’m hesitant to say this but here’s my old-head gatekeeper story. in highschool i adored the band Xiu Xiu. they weren’t like the other Pitchfork bands - it was much darker stuff than like, Arcade Fire or TV on the Radio or what-have-you. it focused more on topics of abuse, dysphoria, suicidality, innocent casualties in senseless wars - elegies for people who's voices were silenced. example:  “the littlest of stones no one visits this solitude & death for you Gale Lynn 1948 unloved infant girl the loneliest of graves for you Gale Lynn” it was touching - in my own selfish teenage way i felt like xiu xiu understood me. they were a smaller group 6-7 years in and not legacy yet. then in 2016 they released a record of covers from the Twin Peaks show. it became their most popular record ever. Ever. and kickstarted a kind of zoomer-revival for the band some that saw as past their prime 15 yrs in. i was of two minds. all the themes that made xiuxiu one of those life-saving bands were replaced with a tv show (admittedly prolly a really good one - i’ve never seen it. loved Mulholland Drive tho). it’s not the end of the world, it’s just a band, but i did kinda feel a certain way. the switch from silenced voices to an already-famous franchise reaped their biggest success - it seemed to demonstrate something. i didn’t gatekeep the record or band - my twin is a massive Twin Peaks fan and i gave him the vinyl for our/his birthday.  i’m sure xiu xiu were happy for the boost in popularity - they know how these things go - and i genuinely think fans can have a stronger attachment to a body of work than even the creator. but in the hype and hoopla - the record coincided with the announcement of the series revival - i felt a small pang as i thought of the littlest of stones no one visits this unloved infant girl  the loneliest of graves for you Gayle Lynn.  - - - - - but it’d break my heart if i wrote anything that’d make anyone feel like xiu xiu couldn’t be ‘their’ band, or whatever. part of me feels this post comes off even more-than-a-little like that. *i* love xiu xiu! they don’t care about Gayle Lynn! they don’t care about the voiceless! they only like hipster directors and tv shows! they’re not real fans! and it’s making me not even wanna hit post. i don’t want my bored late night blog post to make a single person feel sour. and again it would crush me if my being reflective here was taken as active gatekeeping. i was so myopic to ever think i understood a band more than others. that attitude just hurts others and eventually isolates yourself. pls listen to xiuxiu if interested and y’know what? start at the twin peaks record. i’m serious it’s actually really good.  it would be just as fair to say that the folks who loved the Twin Peaks record understand or see something that *i* don’t. and it would be just as important. i mean honestly liking a tv show can be super fucking important. and can help someone keep hanging on in a serious kind of way. (and i understand the show deals with the metaphysical heavily? there’s prolly a lot to dig in there, no doubt). i’m thinking of how to be a fan of something - or deeply entrenched in anything - and allowing anyone in, even those who you feel may not have ‘earned it’ (i hate typing that, especially about a fucking band). it’s easy and even normal to have a selfish, infantile attachment to a piece of media you love, and to move beyond that is to understand that no one has to like or be a fan of anything to care about Gayle Lynn.

OFFUDJSODISJ this literally made my day when i first read it and i laughed about it for so long ofc anon!! first sou request of the blog here we gooo (also happy Father’s Day everyone! I don’t have anything special planned for the blog for the day but have a good one!)

Mr. Brightside (How jealous do they get?)

Sou gets extremely jealous, even more than someone would originally think. He’s rather insecure about himself at times, so if he sees someone flirting with his s/o he’ll start getting extremely passive aggressive and petty. He has the guts to go up to someone and straight-up insult them to their face before dragging his partner away no matter the circumstance, whether it be at a bar, park, party, wherever. He even gets jealous around his s/o’s guy friends; considering he wants to have constant affection and attention from his partner, he’ll most likely be moping in the corner of the room while he watches his s/o with their guy friend. If they start to get especially touchy with his s/o, he’ll probably start planning out how to break the two up before he remembers that it’s just his s/o’s friend and not competition.

While in some situations he’ll be angry enough to blame his s/o, he knows deep down that it’s not actually their fault. He just doesn’t have a way to take out his anger usually, so his partner will have to be able to calm him down and spoil him with lots of affection afterwards. He might be a bit cold to them depending on the situation, but he warms up very quickly especially if his s/o surprises him with gifts, physical affection, etc. He really does care about his partner, it’s just his ego can get in the way sometimes when he takes things to heart.

Sunkissed (Who’s the bigger teaser in the relationship? How would they react to being teased?)

Considering he usually uses sarcastic remarks to make fun of others 24/7, Sou would be the bigger teaser in the relationship. However, once he starts dating his s/o he’s usually sweeter with his teasing comments and is generally less snidey. Sure, he teases his s/o a lot and pokes fun at them every now and then, but he knows that they know this long before they even start dating him.

However, if he was the one being teased he would always be caught off guard by it every single time. He doesn’t really expect his s/o to be the flirtatious or even prankster one out of the pair, so when it first happens he practically shuts down (sub mode). His face gets extremely flustered and if he’s wearing his scarf he’ll pull it up to cover his face or even his beanie as well. Not really knowing how to respond, he’ll say a few short phrases (“S-Stop that, w-will you?” “Since when d-did you get all..??” “Am I r-rubbing off on you or something..”). After that, no matter what, he still gets caught off guard by his s/o’s teasing every time to the point where sometimes it seems as if he’s faking his reactions, when really he isn’t.

Buttercup (What is their favorite form of physical affection?)

Sou’s favorite form of physical affection would be some sort of cuddling, as it allows him to be flexible depending on his mood. When he’s feeling smaller, more insecure he’ll go to his partner to lay in their chest or lap for a few moments just to ‘recharge’ before going on as if nothing happened (unless his s/o pulls him back and insists on cuddling). But when he’s feeling rather brash and generally ratty snarkier than usual, he’ll insist on being the more dominant one such as being the big spoon or body pillow for his s/o.

In general, all he really wants is to have his partner close to him, especially when he’s feeling like he needs more attention from them. He’ll often drape an arm around his s/o’s shoulder or waist in public just so he can pull them closer into his side, whether he’s just walking on the street or in line at a cafe it doesn’t matter to him. He’ll often do it without a word, a mere grin spread out on his face whenever he does it because he knows what he’s doing.

How did find the songs for your "Heroes and Thieves" playlist or did you already know a lot of the songs?

Ahh some I knew before (whether by specific song or at least the artist), several I only discovered at the time of writing/after getting into BTAS and simultaneously encountering perfect musical parallels by sheer coincidence. Rather I just started relating everything to it. *shot* I can share insight into some choices from the chapters posted so far: For example Chapter 2's "Vienna" I actually did discover through a DCAU Tim AMV. ;( Chapter 3's "The Difference" is one that's had special meaning to me since I was a kid, and I initially used for a Pokémon fic back then illustrating the difference between Gary Oak's and Ash Ketchum's characters lol.

Chapter 4's "Clowns (Can You See Me Now?)" by t.A.T.u. also originated from another writer's fandom fic for my first obsessive OTP before TimSteph: Itsuki Koizumi x Haruhi Suzumiya from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. It's what inspired me to reference lyrical quotes each chapter in the first place - though theirs only sampled from t.A.T.u.'s discography and I could never limit myself to a singular artist's selection lmao. (Sadly the fic itself is deleted now, along with the author's other works. OTL)

That being said, Vanessa Carlton and Regina Spektor surprisingly ended up being big influences, whom I previously knew from popular singles (*insert "1,000 Miles" meme*) but began finding more of their songs that seemed to fit. The fic itself borrows its name from Vanessa Carlton's "Heroes and Thieves", which I actually saw other Batfans associating with Steph herself first. Gregory Alan Isakov is a new one whose gentle sound I fell in love with, as evidenced by how recurrent his titles are already throughout the fic. (As soon as I heard "Second Chances" it hit me right in the thematic feels. </3)

Chapter 8's "Night Sky Patrol of Tomorrow" is the first peek of my weeb/Vocaloid roots lol. =P Same for Fullkawa Honpo's "Alice" in Chapter 13 - although at least I used an English cover's translation for it, which I will try to do when applicable. ^^;

Then ofc there's the classic Goo Goo Dolls: I'm sure most people know "Name" from Chapter 12. However, I started listening to their later releases and found a lot relevant as well so you'll see more of those down the line. ;o (Or not - some I just didn't have the space to include. OTL) Run River North is another more obscure band I've known of a while beforehand, and one of my overall favs so they'll appear again too. (As an aside their cover of "Mr. Brightside" is beautifully haunting and one I also closely connected with the ItsuHaru ship...)
