Unfortunately Square played right into my hands by giving Angeal Latin limit break names, so let’s have a look!

Serit Arbores - literally, “He plants trees.” It’s most likely a reference to Book 1 of Cicero’s Tusculan Disputations, “On the Contempt of Death,” which features a fictional speech by Cato the Elder praising elderly farmers that dutifully tend to their fields for the benefit of the next generation. Cato quotes a line from the poet Caecilius Statius:

“Serit arbores quae alteri s[a]eculo prosint.” (“He plants trees so that they may benefit another generation.”)

I believe this could be a reference to Angeal’s SOLDIER Honour, the legacy that he passes down to Zack.

“SOLDIER Honor, the catalyst for Genesis's change in values, is the Gift of the Goddess for him. As SOLDIER Honor represents Angeal's wishes, it can be said that Zack, who inherited Angeal's wishes, was the Gift of the Goddess for Genesis.” (Crisis Core Complete Guide, 2008, p.274)

Angeal’s legacy, carried out first through Zack, and later Cloud, serves to benefit others long after his passing. Additionally, his dreams and honour speeches were given to many of his junior SOLDIER members and continued to inspire them too:

“He has said, "If you are to live as a hero, as a SOLDIER, and as a decent person, you must never forget your honor." Those words made a deep impression on his younger colleagues, especially Zack, and lived on in them.” (Crisis Core Ultimania, 2007)

This is why I believe the choice of this Limit Break name to be very intentional. Of course, given that one of Angeal’s weapons is a shovel (😭) we could understand it at the surface level meaning (Farm Boy Angeal planting apple trees 🤠🍎), but isn’t it fun to dig a little deeper?

Ad Astra - “to the stars.” This could go in many directions as it’s a popular motto on its own, but perhaps its most frequently seen within ��per aspera ad astra,” “through hardships to the stars.” I think this could be a reference to Angeal’s life journey, which saw his humble beginnings in a poor family and his rise to the very top ranks as a SOLDIER First Class. It also may reference his wings:

“The white feature, as well as being a symbol for Angeal, is also a symbol for ‘wings’. The “wings” which cross the ‘blue sky’ is Angeal, and it also includes the hint that in order to reach those heights, dreams, he needs to overcome many difficulties.” (Crisis Core Complete Guide, 2008)

The idea of having to face many hardships on the journey towards the fulfillment of dreams seems built-in to the character of Angeal, and why I think that quote is the one they’re referencing in this limit break.

Not sure why they aren't going after ICP all these years. The only thing I can think of is that they are anti-Trump and to the nu-fans, it's good. Despite the irony that ICP were the villains in the Alpha Timeline that according to Skaianet Systems, Donald Trump tried to stop them.

For some reason, I get the feeling that Alissa might turn out to be a mommy monster yokai, like the one from Inuyasha. Both Angeal and Sephiroth have dreams that focus on their moms.

Ooh I could totally see this. I'm still not completely sure if she is Jenova. So another explanation like this would make equal sense. Regardless, this whole situation had to have done some serious damage to Sephiroth's psyche in relation to his mother. Even if he has a grace period for another eight ish years, Alissa's entire presence probably led to some pretty serious psychological consequences.

What do you think about the future imaginings of the friendsim 2 au?

Hoo boy, this is a loaded question.

Full disclosure: I think the fact that Friendsim 2 exists at all is fantastic. It’s clearly a passion project and it’s had so much effort put into it, it’s untrue. Obviously, the game isn’t finished yet either, so maybe my opinion will change when I can see the project as a finished whole. I also want to establish that I don’t believe my own work is the end-all-be-all.

That being said, I just find FS2 incredibly boring. I’ve played through most of it and, honestly, I was just bored. Every fan-creator has biases towards characters, but the biases in FS2 are so obvious and it feels like they didn’t really know what to do with a lot of the cast, which leads to some really messy storytelling and poor characterisation.

Another similar complaint I have that I suppose is more relevant to my own AU is the fact that, despite there being a whole revolution route, it is once again primarily dominated by mid-highbloods. FS2 is very biased towards jades and above anyway, but it feels particularly egregious when one of the routes you can go down is literally rebellion based. I get that everyone is damaged by the Alternian system, but let’s be real here: I don’t think you can compare Mallek and Marsti’s circumstances, can you? Many of the lowblood members of the cast are either completely ignored or given significantly smaller parts than their cooler hued peers. Now, I understand that in canon the lowbloods don’t have as much going on but, in my eyes, that just means there’s better opportunities to develop them and do some creative world-building. (A minor thing I want to mention also is that I dislike MSPAR a lot, just in general, and I think their inclusion limits a lot of creators).

The best Volume, in my opinion, was Volume 4, because it not only ACTUALLY focused on the lowblood experience, both as part of the Empire and as part of a rebellion, but it also highlighted the differences between lowbloods. Marsti’s conversation with Cirava about her being a burgundy and them being a gold and what that means was genuinely the best part of the whole thing. If FS2 had more of that, I probably would’ve enjoyed it a lot more.

As I said before, I’m very glad a project like Friendsim 2 can exist on such a scale and I understand that, despite said scale, it’s ultimately produced by people who aren’t professionals; just talented fans who care a lot about this Homestuck spin-off. However, there are a lot of flaws that stop me from enjoying it, personally.

Half of my memories of FS/FS2 feel like fever dreams at this point, but the guy was just. Passing out places from grinding too hard?? And iirc Sousuke found him and drove him somewhere while making some vague “get it together” comment. But like. Nothing really said to Makoto or Ryuuji or Haru in an actual “we need to confront this” conversation before he isolated. One of those situations where they’re not all solely responsible for “saving” Haru or anything, but for a bunch of guys supposedly obsessed and close to him, there was a weird lack of anyone noticing or acknowledging something was wrong before the guy was passing out in public

For anyone who's wondering, she's one of Haruka's classmate and also member of the Iwatobi SC at the time before Starting Days timeline (read as: the time when Haru met Rin for the first time).

I just read FS2's reason for making all the purples black and it's everything I feared. They literally ectomashed the stereotypes of canon with the headcanons of Friendsim to make an overall wide-cast net of racial stereotype soup and justified it as political correctness.

So congratulations, SJ. Y'all just confirmed that you made the homicidal drugged up murdercaste match with a race of humans who, themselves, are dealing with negative stereotypes of being the homicidal drugged up murdercaste, BECAUSE of all the stereotypical cultural features that the white man once used to portray said race as the homicidal drugged up murdercaste. Fantastic. Leftstuck once again fails to beat the allegations. Friendsim 2 is rapidly becoming a minstrel show.

This is why we don't do caste of hats, people.
