WAIT HOW DID I NOT REALIZE YOU STUDY LANGUAGES??? (Sorry I just get so excited when I see other linguists/language analysts/etc. out in the wild gkwjgowjfkqjfj)
Anyways, I was wondering if you wanted to talk more about the signed languages you mentioned that are in your WIP? (That’s my specific field of study so I'm super interested haha)
YES OK SO! FIRST OF ALL LINGUISTS ASSEMBLE! Second of all sign languages!
So basically what I am planning to show in my book is the variety of sign languages that there can be. First of to Common Spoken language = CSL (common sign language). Then there is FSL that would be Fluyan Sign Language, that is the one used by Nayeli. And then of course one sign language for every country. I wanted to also implement the idea of Idiolects in Sign languages (The way that Nayeli uses it is slightly different from the way another signer, if the same language uses it. This is something that happens all the time with spoken languages, so I figured including it as well)!
Also PLEASE. Feel free to ramble about Languages and sign languages AS MYCH AS YOU WANT. Tag me everywhere. I will never not repost languages

Hi Dr Mumford, I've just run some task-based fMRI data through fMRIprep and now I'm wondering how to do the subsequent 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level analyses. Are there any best practice resources (e.g., workshops, tutorials) that go through step-by-step on how to implement the subsequent task-based analysis post-fMRIprep?
You mostly just proceed as normal.  You don’t say what analysis software you’re using.  If you’re using FSL I have a “workaround” post on this tumblr that covers how you get FSL to skip the registration (since it was already done) and then the rest of the analysis is normal and I have plenty of tutorials for fMRI analysis that are geared toward FSL on the YouTube channel.  Hope that helps!

Key AI Technologies Used in Salesforce Field Service Lightning
Tumblr media
In the rapidly evolving landscape of customer service, companies are increasingly turning to innovative technologies to streamline operations and enhance customer satisfaction. One of the standout solutions in this domain is salesforce certified field service consultant. By harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI), FSL transforms how organizations manage field service operations. In this article, we will delve into the key AI technologies embedded within Salesforce FSL: Machine Learning, Predictive Analytics, Natural Language Processing, and Computer Vision.
1. Machine Learning
Machine learning (ML) is at the forefront of Salesforce FSL's capabilities. By analyzing historical data and identifying patterns, ML algorithms help organizations make informed decisions about resource allocation, scheduling, and problem resolution.
Optimized Scheduling
One of the primary uses of ML in FSL is optimizing scheduling for field technicians. The system analyzes various factors such as technician skills, location, and customer preferences to create the most efficient schedules. This not only reduces travel time but also increases the likelihood of first-time resolution, leading to higher customer satisfaction.
Smart Recommendations
Another aspect of ML in FSL is its ability to provide smart recommendations. For instance, when a technician is dispatched to a site, the system can recommend the most relevant parts and tools needed for the job based on previous similar tasks. This minimizes the chances of multiple trips and enhances operational efficiency.
2. Predictive Analytics
Predictive analytics leverages historical data to forecast future outcomes, making it a powerful tool for proactive service management.
Anticipating Customer Needs
In FSL, predictive analytics can anticipate customer needs by analyzing patterns in service requests and equipment performance. For example, if a specific piece of machinery frequently requires maintenance after a certain number of operational hours, the system can alert technicians and customers ahead of time. This proactive approach not only helps in reducing downtime but also fosters stronger customer relationships by demonstrating a commitment to service excellence.
Resource Allocation
Predictive analytics also aids in resource allocation by forecasting peak service times. By analyzing trends in service requests, organizations can ensure that they have the right number of technicians available during high-demand periods. This data-driven approach leads to improved response times and optimized workforce utilization.
3. Natural Language Processing
Natural Language Processing (NLP) enables computers to understand and interpret human language, making it a critical component of Salesforce FSL.
Enhanced Communication
In the context of FSL, NLP enhances communication between customers, technicians, and the system itself. For instance, when customers reach out with service requests, NLP algorithms can analyze their messages to extract key information. This not only speeds up the request intake process but also ensures that the relevant details are captured accurately.
Chatbots and Virtual Assistants
Another application of NLP in FSL is the implementation of chatbots and virtual assistants. These AI-powered tools can handle routine inquiries, schedule appointments, and even provide troubleshooting advice. By automating these tasks, organizations can free up human agents to focus on more complex issues, ultimately leading to a more efficient service operation.
4. Computer Vision
Computer vision is another groundbreaking technology integrated into Salesforce FSL, allowing systems to interpret and understand visual data.
Remote Assistance
One of the most impactful applications of computer vision in FSL is remote assistance. Technicians can use mobile devices equipped with camera capabilities to share live video feeds with support teams. By leveraging computer vision, support staff can analyze the visual information in real time, providing instant guidance and troubleshooting assistance. This capability reduces the need for on-site visits, saving time and resources while improving service quality.
Asset Management
Computer vision also plays a crucial role in asset management. By utilizing image recognition technology, FSL can track and manage inventory levels more effectively. For instance, technicians can scan barcodes or take pictures of equipment, allowing the system to automatically update inventory records. This reduces human error and enhances accuracy in asset management.
Conclusion
The integration of AI technologies like Machine Learning, Predictive Analytics, Natural Language Processing, and Computer Vision in Salesforce Field Service Lightning is revolutionizing lightning field service management. By leveraging these advanced capabilities, organizations can optimize operations, enhance customer experiences, and foster proactive service management.
As businesses continue to seek ways to stay ahead in a competitive landscape, embracing these AI technologies within Salesforce FSL will be crucial. The result is a more efficient workforce, reduced operational costs, and ultimately, a higher level of customer satisfaction. By investing in these technologies, companies not only enhance their service capabilities but also position themselves as leaders in the field service lightning support.

fMRI Data Analysis Techniques: Exploring Methods and Tools
Functional magnetic resonance imaging has changed the existing view of the human brain. Because it is non-invasive, access to neural activity is acquired through blood flow changes. Thus, fMRI provides a window into the neural underpinnings of cognition and behaviour. However, the real power of fMRI is harnessed from sophisticated image analysis techniques that translate data into meaningful insights.
A. Preprocessing:
Preprocessing in fMRI data analysis is one of the most critical steps that aim at noise and artefact reduction in the data while aligning it in a standard anatomical space. Necessary preprocessing steps include:
Motion Correction: The fMRI data are sensitive to the movement of the patient. Realignment belongs to one of those techniques that modify the motion by aligning each volume of the brain to a reference volume. Algorithms used for this purpose include SPM-Statistical Parametric Mapping-or FSL-FMRIB Software Library.
Slice Timing Correction: Since the slices of functional magnetic resonance imaging are acquired at times slightly shifted from one another, slice timing correction makes adjustments that ensure synchrony across brain volumes. SPM and AFNI are popular packages for doing this.
Spatial Normalisation: It is a process in which data from every single brain is mapped onto a standardised template of the brain. This thus, enables group comparisons. Tools like SPM and FSL have algorithms that realise precise normalisation.
Smoothening: Spatial smoothening improves SNR by averaging signal of the neighboring voxels. This can be done using a Gaussian kernel and generally done using software packages such as SPM and FSL.
B. Statistical Modelling:
After the pre-processing stage, statistical modelling techniques are applied to data to reveal significant brain activity. The important ones are:
General Linear Model (GLM): GLM is the real workhorse of fMRI analysis. It models, among other things, experimental conditions in relation to brain activity. In SPM, FSL, and AFNI, there is a very solid implementation of the general linear model that will allow a researcher to test hypotheses about brain function.
MVPA: Unlike GLM, which considers the activations of single voxels, MVPA considers the pattern of activity in many voxels together. This provides much power in decoding neural representations and is bolstered by software such as PyMVPA and PRoNTo.
Bayesian Modelling: Bayesian methods provide a probabilistic framework for interpreting fMRI within a statistical environment that includes prior information. Bayesian estimation options are integrated into SPM, permitting more subtle statistical inferences.
C. Coherence Analysis:
Connectivity analysis looks at the degree to which activity in one brain region is related to activity in other brain regions and hereby reveals the network structure of the brain. Some of the main approaches are as follows:
Functional Connectivity: It evaluates the temporary correlation between different brain regions. CONN, which comes as part of the SPM suite, and FEAT of FSL can perform functional connectivity analysis.
Effective Connectivity: Whereas functional connectivity only measures the correlation, effective connectivity models the causal interactions between different brain regions. Dynamic causal modelling, as offered in SPM also, is one such leading metric for this analysis.
Graph Theory: Graph theory techniques model the brain as a network with nodes (regions) and edges (connections), thus enabling the investigation of the topological characteristics of the brain. Some critical tools available in graph theoretical analysis include the Brain Connectivity Toolbox and GRETNA.
D. Software for fMRI Data Analysis
A few software packages form the core of the analysis of fMRI data. Each has its strengths and areas of application:
SPM (Statistical Parametric Mapping)- a full set of tools for preprocessing, statistical analysis, and connectivity analysis.
FSL (FMRIB Software Library)- a strong set of tools for preprocessing, GLM-based analysis, and several methods of connectivity.
AFNI (Analysis of Functional NeuroImages)- a package favoured because of its flexibility and fine-grained options in preprocessing.
CONN- Functional connectivity analysis is very strongly linked with SPM.
BrainVoyager- a commercial package that offers a very friendly user interface and impressive visualisation.
Nilearn- a Python library using machine learning for Neuroimaging data, targeting researchers experienced with Python programming.
Conclusion
fMRI data analysis comprises a very diverse field. Preprocessing, statistical modelling, and connectivity analysis blend together to unlock the mysteries of the brain. Methods presented here, along with their associated software, build the foundation of contemporary neuroimaging research and drive improvements in understanding brain function and connectivity.
Many companies, like Kryptonite Solutions, enable healthcare centres to deliver leading-edge patient experiences. Kryptonite Solutions deploys its technology-based products from Virtual Skylights and the MRI Patient Relaxation Line to In-Bore MRI Cinema and Neuro Imaging Products. Their discoveries in MRI technology help provide comfort to patients and enhance diagnostic results, able to offer the highest level of solutions for modern healthcare needs.
Be it improving the MRI In-Bore Experience, integrating an MRI-compatible monitor, availing the fMRI monitor, or keeping updated on the latest in fMRI System and MRI Healthcare Systems, all the tools and techniques of fMRI analysis are indispensable in any modern brain research.

This language contact situation between speakers of different languages, as expounded by Dreisbach, consequently gives rise to the emergence of hybrid languages, pidgins, and creoles. In many large-scale societies, multilingualism emerges as a consequence of waves of migration, invasion, commerce and trade, and consequently language contact, a sociolinguistic phenomenon by which speakers of different languages or varieties interact and influence each other, which results in varying degrees of transfer of linguistic features from one language to another. In the Philippines, multilingualism comes in many different guises and situations. The different faces of multilingualism in the PhilippinesĪs stressed in this panel, multilingualism is the norm in many parts of the world hence, policy makers should start veering away from crafting policies and implementing programs anchored to a monolingual system. However, the existing linguistic theories, constructs, and ideologies, language documentation practices, and language policies, among others, potentially threaten the multilingual and highly diverse linguistic ecology in the Philippines. As one may note, the Philippine linguistic ecology is evidently rich and diverse. Furthermore, the Philippines has Filipino as the national language and Filipino Sign Language or FSL as the country’s official language of the Filipino deaf community. Being steeped in rich history and culture, the Philippines, as detailed by Santiago, also shelters a large number of languages that are genetically non-Philippine such as Chavacano, a Spanish-based creole spoken in Zamboanga City and Cavite province Lannang-Oe or the Philippine Hokkien spoken by the ethnic Chinese population in the Philippines and English, the country’s official language used in commerce, law, and education. Of the living languages, 175 are indigenous and 9 are non-indigenous. (2021), the Philippines is a home to 186 languages, wherein 184 are living and 2 are extinct. It is common knowledge that the Philippines, being an archipelagic country, is one of the regions in the world with a high index of linguistic diversity. The Philippines as a multilingual country However, multilingualism is now the norm and this calls for a paradigm shift in terms of how we should view and deal with linguistic diversity and multilingualism. In the context of the Philippines which is the focus of this panel, linguistic practices lean towards monolingualism despite the country’s multicultural and multilingual nature. This biblical narrative of the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11:1-9 presumably accounts for the origin of the multiplicity of languages, which is perceived as a divine punishment.Īlthough several centuries have already passed since the fall of Babel, there remains bias against multilingualism, which is reflected in various language policies and current linguistic practices and perspectives, among others. Enraged by this arrogant pursuit of power, God mixed up the language of the builders so they could no longer understand each other and dispersed them all over the earth. In biblical literature, the Babylonians, who were believed to speak a single language at that time, attempted to build a tower tall enough to reach the heavens. Probably, some are perplexed by the panel title, particularly the term ‘Counter-Babel’ consisting of the prefix counter – which denotes opposition, and Babel which is a biblical allusion to the Tower of Babel. The six speakers comprising this panel are academics who came from diverse backgrounds and field communities, namely, Louward Zubiri, a PhD student at University of Hawai’i at Manoa Vincci Santiago, instructor at UP Diliman Assistant Professor Diane Manzano of UP Los Baños Jeconiah Dreisbach, lecturer at De La Salle University Sociolinguist Ruanni Tupas of University College London and Assistant Professor Maria Kristina Gallego of UP Diliman who also moderated the virtual discussion. In particular, the speakers look into the different aspects, challenges, and issues in accounting for multilingualism in the Philippines. One of the five panel discussions held at the recently concluded 14 th Philippine Linguistics Congress organized by the University of the Philippines Department of Linguistics essentially highlights how linguistically diverse the Philippines is and how ironically predisposed the linguistic practices are towards the perspective of monolingualism.

African Forensic DNA Testing Market by Product and Service (Consumables, Instruments, Software), Assay Kits and Reagents (DNA Amplification, Quantification), Technology (Capillary Electrophoresis, PCR, NGS, Microarray, Rapid DNA Analysis) - Forecast to 2025
The African Forensic DNA Testing Market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.1% from 2019 to reach $136.3 million by 2025. It was found that forensic science, a discipline, had its own history, pioneers, inception problems, and historical achievements in various regions. As per the data by South African Police Services (SAPS), the crime levels indicated in 2012/13 were 16,259 murders, 66,387 sexual offenses, and 105,888 robberies. However, previously there were lot of questions on these data due to relatively poor raw data collection and interpretation of findings. To overcome these issues, forensic DNA testing technology was started to evolve in the African region. Forensic DNA testing is a technology used for identification and investigation of criminals, suspects, ancestors, and other disputes. The African region is currently trying to eliminate climate of criminality with the evolution of this technology. This evolution leads to develop forensic laboratories such as SAPS Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and others in various countries of this region.
Rising Government Support and Legislations on the use of DNA Database for Forensics is driving the overall African forensic DNA testing market
DNA database consists of collections of biological samples (if stored), computerized DNA profiles, and other information such as criminal history and ethnicity that may be valuable to identify the criminal and genetics of organism. This database can only be useful if there is a match between DNA profile of suspect and a crime scene DNA profile. Traditionally, uses of DNA databases were restricted due to lack of government support. However, to overcome the challenge of rising crime rate and increasing number of unresolved cases, the various government agencies in the region are changing the rules and regulations associated with the use of DNA technology and DNA database in forensics. Also, the single most important factor necessary for effective DNA database is the legislation related to the creation of the database and its legal use in the region. For instance, the South African government has taken an initiative to support DNA database and became the 54th country to implement legislation to create national DNA Database program due to growing incidences of murders, advancement of technology, and other violent crimes.
In addition, Algeria was the first country in Northern Africa to pass criminal offender DNA database legislation in 2016. Moreover, in the African region, there are 14 countries that apply DNA profiling in their criminal investigations and two countries with a national DNA database. Other countries such as Lesotho, Namibia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe are on their way to setup DNA database. Also, South Africa is involved in providing assistance in forensic investigations to other countries.
This rising government support and legislation increases the use of DNA testing kits and related products in forensics for the preparation of DNA profiles in the detection of criminals and help forensic analysts to compare DNA profiles of both suspect and victim; thereby expected to drive the forensic DNA testing market in the African region in the coming years.

Non-Uniformity in Government Regulations across the Region is the major challenge faced by forensic DNA testing vendors
On 27 January 2014, the Government of Africa passed the Criminal Law (Forensic Procedures) Amendment Act, 37 of 2013, which is more commonly known as the “DNA Act”. Since, DNA is established, as the material that makes up the genetic code of living organisms and unique for each individual. The act allows the specially trained police officers to take non-invasive DNA samples from arrested persons and convicted offenders which imply that anyone suspected of committing a crime, and all convicted offenders, are expected to give DNA samples to a specially designated police office. Also, the DNA Act ensures that these samples are processed by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in a forensic laboratory to generate a unique string of characters called a DNA profile. As every person’s DNA profile is different and, similar to a fingerprint, is able to provide evidence in a case. Thus, the act makes possible to compare crime scene evidences such as blood on clothing, with DNA obtained from a cheek scraping taken from a suspect to be analyzed for culprit identification. In addition, South African Police Service developed a DNA Criminal Intelligence Database that is administered by the Biology Unit of the Forensic Science Laboratory.
However, despite of many benefits provided by DNA databases, some criticism is directed at the establishment of such a database and amendment of the act. Concerns regarding the furnishing of consent, the collection of samples, the chain of custody, and privacy issues have been raised which is hindering the implementation of the act in various countries of Africa. It is believed that identification of DNA from a blood drop or bulb containing hair shaft leads to individual’s risk of contracting terminal or chronic diseases from insurance company. Also, unregulated DNA collection and investigation by police is considered as DNA theft in some states/countries pertaining to blackmailing and purchasing of genetic information harming the individuality of the donor. Thus, privacy concerns arising due to the DNA testing and non-uniform regulations are limiting the adoption of DNA technology in many African countries and also limiting full functioning of the DNA Act in South Africa. Thus, non-uniformity in government regulations across the region is one of the major challenges for African forensic DNA testing market.
