11, and please feel free to list more than one :)))))))
SO. All but one of the asks I've gotten so far include 11, which is very funny. I suspect this has something to do with my loud and proud enjoyment of several taboo setups, such as stepsiblings/pseudoincest. And I wanted to take this opportunity to write about some of those, I really did. I thought I was finally going to write about my treasured mess, Ye Xingsi and Fu Yongjie. But here's the thing: taboo is different from forbidden, and the more I thought about it the less it fit. The forbiddenness in that relationship isn't the primary or even the secondary issue. And instead of writing a whole essay on why they and most other pseudoincest pairs aren't doing "forbidden love" as a primary trope, I sigh and turn my gaze to other pairs.
Forbidden Love, to me, has to involve at least one of two things as a primary obstacle: unyielding social/familial barriers, or deep internal guilt. It's one of several tropes on the list that plays a little different for gay ships, because in so many contexts just the fact of being a same-sex couple makes it a forbidden love. Most BLs let the social barriers soften pretty quickly, if they're present at all, and very few have the characters really wrangling with guilt (shame is slightly more common, but that's another essay I'm not going to write right now.) However, we do have a few stellar examples.
Pat and Pran, Bad Buddy
Obvious when you think about it. Pran's mother explicitly says that she'd accept Pran being with anyone except Pat (or Pat's sister.) From Pran's secret, agonized pining to them sneaking into each other's rooms years later, their whole relationship is conducted under the understanding that their parents cannot and will not accept it. A lot of Bad Buddy's power comes from the way it transmutes familial homophobia, letting queer viewers who live under that same degree of forbiddenness and secrecy see their experiences reflected without having to sit through on-screen homophobia.
In and Wang, 180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us
Here's the other side of forbidden love, one that's primarily about internal guilt. The attraction between In and Wang is deeply triangulated on the ghost of Wang's father, but that doesn't mean it isn't genuine. Here's a love that In understands to be forbidden in every aspect: by age, by prior bonds, by his own enduring reluctance to accept his desire for men. Inthawut's guilt is a millstone in every moment between them, and in the end it sinks any possibility of a longer relationship. Now, is it better for both of them that it went that way? Almost certainly. But it's still a relationship saturated with guilt and the consciousness on In's side that this is and must be forbidden. And it constantly calls up the echo of In's past relationship to Siam which, without the same weight of guilt, might have taken beautiful flight.
And I don't want to end without a nod to a few historical ships, where the characters really are restrained by the simple fact of being gay in a hostile society:
Tian and Jiu, Khun Chai
Eeang Peung and Maey, I Feel You Linger in the Air
Jom and Yai, I Feel You Linger in the Air
(also tagging EVERYONE ELSE who asked me this one: @twig-tea @shortpplfedup @wen-kexing-apologist)

One of the reasons I'm so frustrated with how they're handling the xingsi x yongjie storyline (besides the obvious) is how much potential it had to be a genuinely interesting story that explored issues of love vs obsession and healthy relationships.
Like yongjie is, on his own, an interesting character, and they really could've gone more in depth and tried to explore his mental health issues and why he has chosen to cling to xingsi. He could've had a whole arc where he realizes that he doesn't actually understand xingsi and that he's been projecting a lot. (having in depth knowledge of surface level information about a person and making logical conclusions does not mean you understand that person)
Yongjie could actually grow as a person as he has to relearn both xingsi and himself and learn how to love someone selflessly. Like yeah, I think no matter what, their relationship is going start from an unhealthy place, but like the individual growth they could both go through as yongjie learns how to love other people and xingsi learns how to love and value himself.
Also, yongjie has a fun dynamic within the group, i thought his interactions with muren and li cheng were pretty cute and funny, and i could've enjoyed them if they weren't overshadowed but all the shit he did and they way they've decided to gloss over everything. Like, if his interactions were more motivated by jealousy bc he also wants to be that close to xingsi rather than possessiveness and not wanting others to be that close to xingsi, it would've been cute.
Just like, this relationship could've been so fun, the character development so rich and fulfilling and sending out a good, healing message about healthy relationships and self love. And I think the characters/actors have good chemistry, but that preview for next ep tho is just fucked up.

I actually really like Yongjie and Xingsi. I can tell Yongjie really cares about Xingsi even though he has a outlandish way of showing it. I really like them together as a couple.
Also I'm not going to lie both actors did really good with that bedroom scene when it was Yongjie birthday. I would be so embarrassed to do all that stuff as an actor 😭...
Also I know a lot of people don't like them so if you don't that's fine just don't come on my post painting me as some disgusting criminal because I enjoy this fictional couple of step bros together 😂.

I'm literally searching through this tag because I love to see how furious and hateful are people about Yong-Xing Cp xD Like, well... You hate what you hate. I like what I like. Bring me some popcorn 😏 And I especially love how they're praising ChengRen CP. Yeah, they have some cute moments, I agree. But they're so dull to me. I live for the drama and the happy ending of the most hated couple because that's who I am 😁

Summary: Fu Yongjie knows he a jealous person by nature. His brother was so attractive and Yongjie knew that other people had thought so too going by his online dating profile. He knew it was only a matter of time before he encountered that side of his brother’s life.

i am beyond DONE with yongjie. what he feels is not love. it’s absolutely not romantic or healthy at all. it’s an obsession that stems from his lack of a solid father figure presence that apparently his own mother tolerates and encourages. he has not been put in check. he doesn’t cherish xingsi at all, he just thinks he deserves to own him. and the biggest factor into what made yongjie think that what he’s doing is okay is because xingsi lets him. xingsi let’s him get away with everything and even holds his hand after.
xingsi also needs help. his internalised homophobia is so damaging to him that he’s letting yongjie, his step brother who he’s known as a child, do stuff to him because he thinks that’s the only way he can have a form of affection that he desires. he thinks so lowly of himself for being gay that his immediate response to getting r*ped is that he somehow influenced his own brother to do it by simply being gay.
they cannot end up together. they cannot simply fix themselves by pretending their damaging ideals of what love is, is enough. they both need help and therapy. yongjie needs to face the consequences of his CRIME and his actions. he needs to be responsible for it and to repent. xingsi needs to understand that he’s a victim and that he’s being manipulated to hell and back by his own brother. he needs to take himself out of that situation and also learn or at least start to try and love himself.
#this isn’t gonna happen but i hope they get the help they need#some form of therapy or smth#they’ll probably just run off into the sunset#fuck i’m so annoyed#history 4: close to you#history4 近距離愛上你#ye xingsi#fu yongjie#mina’s history4 cty rambles

I assume this is the same anon.
The characters of Chenbi in Yanxi and Han Xiangjian in Ruyi are both based around the legend of the Fragrant Concubine (Xiang Fei, real title Rong Fei). Rong Fei was arguably one of the most famous consorts of Emperor Qianlong, due to all the conflicting stories and mysteries about her.
The barebones of her story is that she was an Uyghur woman given to Qianlong to be his concubine, but she was miserable and homesick in the palace. In order to cheer her up, Qianlong built a new palace called Bao Yue Lou, a bazaar and mosques for her. Basically he went all out to try and cheer her up because he was a douche who couldn’t take a hint that a woman might not like him.
In some version of the story, this was enough to cheer her up. In other versions of the story, Rong Fei was married/had a lover back home, and he was killed/she was torn away from him when she was taken to be Qianlong’s concubine. In this version, she tried to kill Qianlong and may or may not have been put to death by the empress dowager.
So, why would the lovely SART feel the need to censor her story?
Well, first off, this is what Qianlong did to Rong Fei’s people before/around the time she came to him as his concubine.Qianlong is still considered one of the great emperors of the Qing dynasty, but it’s a little hard, nowadays, even for China, to praise genocide.
Then there is what the current Chinese government is doing in Xinjiang, where the majority of China’s Uyghur population lives. The Chinese government, of course, denies this.
Rong Fei is too significant a figure to ignore in dramas that run the length of Qianlong’s reign like Yanxi and Ruyi, so the Chinese government want to control how her story is told instead, so that 1) it fits with their narrative and 2) isn’t controversial enough to spark debates about what is going on in real life.
It’s difficult to tell what exactly they changed about Chenbi in Yanxi, because obviously we don’t know what her story was supposed to be like. But I bet it was less rushed, random, and hand-wave-y than the drama version. They also probably changed her name because it was just the easiest way to get past censors, and I think they probably just plucked a random other concubine of Qianlong’s out of the records and Shun Pin was likely insignificant enough historically that she fit the bill.
But that’s the thing, Shun Pin, as a character in Yanxi, was just as insignificant, because she felt so random. If you take away Rong Fei’s Uyghur identity and all the background of imperialism and genocide that comes with that, you take away the emotional backbone of her story. So Chenbi ends up being...just there. To sort of...what? Create gay vibes/queerbait? Make Yingluo realise how she feels about Qianlong? But whatever her purpose in the story is, it seemed less dependent on her being of an ethnic minority group, so that’s why the easiest solution to get the drama passed by censors is just to change the character name.
Xiangjian plays a much more significant role in Ruyi, and pretty much everything about her significance hinges on the fact that she is at least not Han/Manchurian/Mongolian. She appears and is immediately a threat because she is this “other” woman in every sense - a foreigner suddenly turning all the rules and traditions of the inner palace on its head. Qianlong’s tripping over himself to win her over by building Bao Yue Lou, bringing her people to her, dressing up in ethnic dress and having himself painted with her (something he didn’t even dare do with Ruyi when Langhua was alive, as only the emperor and empress could be painted together). Basically, Qianlong, in his obsession with Xiangjian, was throwing his own dignity out the window. Which is so painfully ironic and significant for a man so obsessed with face.
Eyinzhu’s later plot of hiring a random guy to pretend to be an admirer of Xiangjian and kidnap Yongji (creating another rift in Ruyi and Qianlong’s relationship) is based on the fact that he is supposed from the same tribe/group as her.
Xiangjian is basically the nail on the coffin of Ruyi and Qianlong’s relationship. And for that, they couldn’t change her storyline as drastically as they could with Chenbi. So they just say she’s from “Han tribe”, instead of being Uyghur.
Ethnic-politics censorship in Chinese drama is very uncomfortable, but it unfortunately exists and these days, Rong Fei is the figure that is most often the victim of this. Another example is Huan Zhu Ge Ge: in the original 1997 version, the character Saiya (Fu Ertai’s wife) was a Tibetan princess. In the 2011 remake version, she is Mongolian. Because...well, yeah, this whole thing. But at least Saiya is fictional. -H
