i was curious for no particular reason how many of my 112,782 posts (which, incidentally, comes out to about 21 posts per day on average) were actually original, so I checked and apparently it is 45,222 or 40% (this works out to 12 original posts per day, which is actually fewer than I thought).
so then I was curious how the data would change if I looked at more recent years when I've been using tumblr more heavily - or at least that was my expectation. what I actually learned was that my posting peaked in 2013 (5,766 posts, or almost 16 per day) and has been on a general decline since 2018. see:
Tumblr media
the sharp drop from 2019 to 2020 is surprising to me given quarantine. so far this year I've been on an average of a mere 4 posts per day. (counting original posts only.)
this is interesting and fun for nobody except me but, as usual, i did it anyway

Here are some fun numbers for the show!
PALISADE is currently 67 hours, 27 minutes, and fifty seconds - or 2 days, 19 hours, 27 minutes, and 50 seconds
The Road to Palisade was 65 hours, 17 minutes, and twelve seconds - or 2 days, 17 hours, and twelve seconds
That means PALISADE overtook The Road to Palisade 1 hour, 7 minutes, and 18 seconds into "PALISADE 29: Honesty and Integrity, Pt. 2." If you wanna listen back, something very funny happened at that exact moment!
Currently, the precise "middle" of PALISADE was 1 hour, 17 minutes, and 2 seconds into "PALISADE 15: Upon Our Grace pt. 2" - another fun moment in PALISADE!
If the next episode is longer than 1.5 hours, then the total length of PALISADE will reach 69 hours so far - nice!
I calculated all of this using the in-built audio length counter in Strawberry - an open-source music organization program. the math was all me, so there might be some mistakes here and there.
spoilers below...
we passed the road at the exact moment when the table decided to teleport Brnine away from the scene of the crime after assassinating the Princept... AND the exact half of Palisade was Sylvi's "Kingdom Hearts" joke before meeting Grand Mag.
fucking wild

Put thee not on Silent
[ID: A 4 panel comic made of digital paintings of a zoom meeting between the knights of the Round Table.
Sir Galahad, Queen Guinevere, Sir Gawain, Sir Lancelot, Sir Bedivere, have their own individual screens, and one screen shows a conference room with King Arthur, Sir Mordred, and others who are not named.
Both Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere have their cameras turned off, and microphones muted, the entire time.
Panel 1 shows King Arthur with a few of his knights, with Sir Mordred brooding beside him in shadows, and a hand reaching from offscreen to steal snacks from a bowl.
Sir Galahad has his microphone muted, and is in a forest, looking up and to the side. He has brown hair up above his head and very pale skin.
King Arthur asks, "Sir Gawain, canst thou see the PowerPoint slides?"
Panel 2 shows Sir Gawain, who has brown skin, black hair, green clothes, and heterochromia, with one green eye and one dark, replies, "Verily I cannot, I think it be a miasma of the sight."
Behind him for the background is a section from the Green Knight manuscript, showing faded lettering and a green knight on a green horse standing in front of someone with a large axe while a crowd of spectators watch from the sides.
Sir Galahad's screen is now slightly motion-blurred, showing a reddragon's open mouth in front of Sir Galahad's face.
Panel 3 shows Sir Bedivere, labeled Tech Support, who wears a blue shirt and a plumed knight's helm, looking exhaustedly into the camera, pushing his helmet visor up with one hand. He is lit by blue light and has bags under his eyes, asking: "Hast thou sharest the screen?"
His background is of a library. Sir Galahad's screen is now taken up by the motion-blurred side of the dragon that is attacking him.
Panel 4 shows Sir Gawain turned slightly to the side, looking derisively at the camera, saying: "Yea, but I cannot hear Sir Galahad."
The only thing left in Sir Galahad's screen is the motion-blurred, spade shaped tail tip of the dragon chasing him.
End ID.]

The absolute MOST important part of a late game flondon PC is that they still be written pathetic by the game sometimes. You're a railway tycoon and a name known from the docks to the Bazaar for your Ambition and achievements, you can persuade or intimidate with the wave of a hand, but you are GOING to make this social faux pas in front of an entire party if you fail this check and it's going to be a whole thing. You are going to get chased by terrorbirds on the train and your hat and luggage will go everywhere. Sometimes you simply won't dodge that hit and that big guy will send you flying, and it will not be dramatic or heroic, because that was a 95% success chance and d__n, it's shaping up to be one of those days again, isn't it. It's really important to me, that those things be left in. It's what keeps the writing from becoming purely a power slash ego trip, and any activity that doesn't leave room for that is a lot more likely to lose my interest.
#fallen london#also notably there's a difference between this and just generally being allowed to fail#the stakes being raised and the difficulty being raised are not This#that's just a natural progression and does inevitably serve to make the PC look cooler#this is about staying grounded#this is about reminding the player that although *other people* might often see your character as more than human#they aren't actually free from that through their own lens#they're gonna fuck up. Sometimes it will be embarassing. Sometimes it will also be dangerous#this is a setting filled with things more ancient and powerful than us and sometimes they will see your maxed out stats and laugh at you#honestly I wish the game did this more than it does#not using being able to overpower the PC as a way to make something feel more dangerous#but as a way to make the PC feel a little smaller#I think this is a large part of why the game doesn't fully hit the horror vibe for me#the *setting* is horror for sure#but base game flondon? not really#it has too much invincibility and too much power put in the player's hands for that#and that's also important and also trying to do a thing; it's a commentary on Victorian arrogance#as well as just being a thing that makes the game fun#but it does get a little bit grating and unrealistic in certain places#I think midgame was the worst for that#late feels better for some reason#but I still wish we'd get the chance to occasionally see our characters be at a loss or embarrassed in a humanizing way a little more often

Catching up on Wonderlust rn, and that little part in ep 26 where WD saw her reflection in the floor implanted itself in my mind bc it was a pretty cool visual and it wouldn’t leave until I drew it :-)

speaking of fun little statistical stuff, I was poking around in my own ao3 archive (as you do) and out of curiosity looked at my archive warnings, where I apparently have 83 marked as Major Character Death. this is not, all things considered, a large percentage of my oeuvre as archived on ao3, but I was sort of curious how it distributes across characters.
I counted fic where characters die multiple times once, and fics where I did alt-POVs of the same fic once. I did include fic that in some way dwelt on or concerned canonical character death. I waffled a little on counting fic where characters die temporarily and come back before the end of the fic, and decided to include them on a subjective "does this feel like it's MCD enough" basis.
what I learned is that I have killed:
47 different characters
In 17 different fandoms
digging more into specifics:
34 of those I only killed once
Loki won the "most killed" award with 10 deaths, followed by Sam Winchester with 8, so congratulations guys you get some kind of a trophy
8 out of 47 killed characters were female (or 17%)
34 out of 47 killed characters died at least once in canon, though 6 of those were not permanent - so mostly I'm writing about characters who are dead already, not creating new ones!
Of the winners of the most killed award, for the most part the overall frequency of their being tagged in my work was in line with the number of times I've killed them, so the more often I write about a character the more likely I am to kill them.
The exceptions here were Thor and Steve Rogers, who I mostly just write watching other people die, apparently, and Celegorm, who has died in 13.5% of all the fics I've written about him. (Compare Loki, at a measly 3.5%, or Sam at 7.2%.)
and here's a fun little chart showing the characters I've killed more than one time.
Tumblr media
further analysis that might be interesting: a comparison of the character death rate in my own fic vs. the character death rate of my faves in canon. is there any correlation? who can say. also potentially interesting: a comparison between the major character death fics in my bookmarks vs. the ones I've written.
was this productive or useful for anyone? no! spent the time doing it anyway. what can I say, there are five or six things I should be doing that I'm avoiding
