Spider Webs
When I was a little kid I used to try and find "cobs" in funnel webs because I thought that must be what cobwebs were and surely the cobs must be nearby. I've always always loved spider and I've always been fascinated with their webs in some form or another, whether a child's inquisitive nature or simply admiring their beauty: how the sunlight glints off the strands, or how water drops settle on them like a string of pearls, or the patterns themselves.
All my photos, all unedited (I think; going off memory because I don't have all my working files on account of a external hard drive failure).

I had to explain to someone recently that the big lizards in Sydney won’t eat you or hurt you, and that we don’t have crocodiles or alligators here. Plus the snakes are more likely to run away if they hear you. This person was afraid to go walking on our local trails and very scared of ‘the reptiles’.
#Australia#you do actually see snakes but the only person I’ve known one to strike was my dad and that was long ago (it got his boot not him)#most snakes here won’t kill you#good to treat wildlife with respect#the most common dangerous creature I see evidence of is the funnelweb spider but i didn’t mention that#bc this person then would be scared everywhere

Just wanted to clarify - when you say there are no "one bite and you die" spiders, are you saying there are no spiders than can kill you with a bite? I feel like I must be missing something.
There are no spiders in which their bite is a death sentence. The deadliest spider on earth is the sydney funnelweb, but the odds of dying from its bite even without medical intervention are still under 1%. Far far under, because only 13 deaths were recorded for an entire century before antivenom was developed. That's 13 out of what had to be thousands of known bites in that time frame.
Death from any spider bite is therefore an outlier, none of them can be said to be "normally" life threatening.

Hi! I haven't gone through all the animals you've done yet, but I have a few requests from my local area:
- rainbow lorikeet
- brush-tailed possum
- crimson rosella
- king parrot
- greater bilby
- stonefish
- Sydney funnelweb spider
- red-belly black snake
- rock wallaby
Wonderful! Don't worry, I'll check for anything I've already done. I'll go in order.

Did you HEAR? NEW SPIDER JUST DROPPED
They disambiguated a bunch of funnelweb spider species and discovered a new one that's BIGGER and BETTER than the others and now we're calling it the NEWCASTLE BIG BOY.
I got this picture from this news article (Australian Broadcasting Corporation, "Newcastle funnel-web spider identified as bigger, deadlier than other species") and I'm putting it under the cut for you.
KEEP READING FOR BIG BOY

People are always like 'spiders are so evil!! they're out to get you!!!' I don't have a good number of how many I've interacted with up close, but I've got over 3000 arachnids on inat and that's only the ones that I got decent photos of, and I usually don't upload more than 2 or 3 of the same species from a location so if I had to estimate I've probably got within macro photography distance of at least 5000 spiders over the past 3 years. Of these, only about 5 have actually got 'aggressive' on me and most were ones I accidentally poked (the other one was an annoyed funnelweb but I flipped the bark it was hiking under so like. I understand it's annoyance lol). I've also held hundreds bare handed (though I'm careful to do that in a way that doesn't startle them and only species I know are not bitey or particularly venomous) and have never been bitten...
If spiders really were sinister aggressive creatures well. I would have a lot more photos of spider faces and a lot less of one leg sticking out of leaf litter.
#curse of living in australia#no one has died of spider bite here since sydney funnelweb antivenom was invented in 1984 but people CONSTANTLY go on about how the spiders#are out to get them.

oc questions
tagged by @foxboyclit, thank you! i’ll do this for Vizaeth just cause the first question immediately made me think of my worst boy 🖤
[ID - a red decorative divider]
👕 Appearance: Is there someone your character tries to look similar to?
Pharaun, naturally. He’s copied dress-sense, hairstyle, make-up, vocal cadence/speech style, movement…Viz is hot in his own wet-cat way, but he really is just Pharaun From Menzoberranzan Wish most of the time.
📦 Objects: Is there an item your character is embarrassed they own or want?
okay i have two for this, and they’re different areas of embarrassment. one is that fox you posting about Minnie’s stuffed spider has me thinking that Viz has one and is embarrassed about still having it, and tries to overcome that by telling himself it’s definitely sacrilege to throw out even the image of a spider and Lolth would be mad at him if he did it
the other is that there’s this dress Jhinlara got him a bit before he stole his brother’s body, and it’s white with stitched red gems, fine silk, the most gorgeous thing ever and very very feminine and he hates that he still wants it. that he sometimes thinks about wearing it, and that makes him vacillate between ‘horny and mad about it’ and ‘so dysphoric he wants to claw his own skin off’.
🍽️ Food and Drink: What is a childhood meal your character cherishes?
yay i get to pull out the Vegetable Lore again! when he was a kid, the House Thaezyr cook had a really neat way of making roasted vegetables - something about the way they seasoned them and cooked them just made them absolutely perfect, and Vizath could not get enough of them. he misses them so much now he’s living off of Sorcere fare. and also now that the cook’s been executed. makes it hard to relive the childhood dinner, that does.
🌤️ Weather and Nature: Has your character had a meaningful encounter with an animal?
Several with spiders - to be honest, every encounter with a spider, Vizaeth treats as meaningful. The one with the funnelweb in thus came the sign was pretty significant in Viz-Vision also.
🤝 Community and Relationships: How comfortable would your character be singing and dancing in front of others?
oh not at all. he’s awkward and inelegant in so much of his movement, and his co-ordination and rhythm is just nonexistent. he’ll happily join in or do religious chants or litanies and that kind of thing, but sing? nah. that boy sings like a dying bird, it’s Not Good.
(he’ll dance at a party if Pharaun asked him to. my god he’d dance if Pharaun asked him to. he might also let Rhylfein drag him into something, especially if he’d had a bit to drink first)
💓 Mind, Body and Soul: Are there scents your character dislikes?
context makes him dislike things more than actual scents - his most disliked are perfumes that other people wear if he doesn't like that person. sweeter things, i think, more floral scents.
🎲 Hobbies and Activities: What is a talent your character wishes they had?
much as he disdains the brutish nature of warriors as he perceives them, i do think he wishes he knew how to use a sword properly. i figure he's had basic training in swordplay as part of his education, but the aforementioned lack of co-ordination means he's not good at it.
he also wishes he was better at more schools of magic, but alas. weave rot and bodystealing have left him a necromancy savant who struggles with literally everything else <3

Could you defeat a spider in single combat?
According to the D&D 5 monster manual, the Commoner (average human) and the Spider (not the giant spider, just a spider) are the same cr. I think I am a below average human when it comes to combat, but I believe I could defeat any spider in single combat.
Some stipulations:
The spider given in the monster manual is clearly not an average spider, as the average spider is incapable of harming a human. Therefore, I posit that the monster manual spider is in fact the most deadly spider in the world, the Sydney Funnelweb Spider. You can read about them here. Note that spider venom takes time to take effect, and you will likely be able to continue fighting even if you are bit.
The monster manual commoner is armed with a club, so you can be armed with simple household weapons: a stick, a cup, or a shovel. You may not have a gun, bug spray, poison of any kind, or a net.
You may not choose to avoid fighting the spider (i.e., run away), but you may nonlethally defeat the spider if you so choose.
No surprise rounds, i.e., both you and the spider are able to clearly see each other at the beginning of the fight and are aware that you're in combat.
The spider is trying to kill you. This is not normal spider behavior, so we can stipulate that an evil wizard has mind controlled it into trying to kill you in gladiatorial combat.
Reblog for larger sample size, i.e., more average commoner.
