hello my dears... the last time i shot a tortoise beetle it became the most noted post on my blog... so heres another tortoise beetle i saw
Tumblr media Tumblr media
what's red and black and gold all over? Chiridopsis scalaris is another tortoise beetle with that cool translucent edge just like my previous asian tortoise beetle sighting. like other tortoise beetles, this one was real small, kinda like pinky nail sized
always makes me so excited to see tortoise beetles. i wish i saw them more often. i regret not taking more pics of this lil guy from more angles but i didnt have long before it flew away
Tumblr media
coincidentally, i saw the flat abdomen crab spider (Camaricus maugei) just next to the tortoise beetle, with a strikingly similar colour palette!!
a very common crab spider species that ive somehow never shot before? only for it to appear right next to a tortoise beetle sharing the red and black and gold colouration. and clear legs too! how crazy is that
i know its probably just a coincidence but i like to think theres some sort of ecological reason they were found together. entomologists please feel free to prove this and make my day

Bark spiders (Caerostris spp.) by Chien C Lee on Flickr, originals at flic.kr/p/2kHkm3J & flic.kr/p/2qqA9zG & flic.kr/p/2kJQyGW. (Posting images directly here so I can add alt text.)
This week I was distraught - genuinely fkn mortified - to discover that my lovely other half, my beloved Kitty the cat-human, doesn't... I mean truly *does not*... Think that bark spiders are friggin adorable.
I weep, OMFGs.
Like. I know I should just be happy that they've come to a point where they evict spiders with a cup & card, instead of squishing them.
But bark spiders.
I mean.
Bark spiders are so cool! They look like bark, FFS.
Look at these bark spiders. Behold them! These fancy spood ladies. The twiggy lookin butts. Their smol faces. Glorious weirdos, how could you be mean to a tiny mush like that? The females only get to a couple of centimetres apparently, males are much smaller. They're soo smol, it's not like they're gonna hurt you Kitty? I mean... Look how anxious they look hugging their twigs?? (Gestures at the world) I feel you, little buddies.
I know they're not the most elegant spoods in webs or wombling around, but they are good cryptic critters, pls be nice to them.

Several different types of creatures go by the name "daddy long legs", one of which are the family Pholcidae, also known as cellar spiders. They're found on every continent on Earth except Antarctica, preferring to live in human dwellings generally high out of reach where they feed on various other small invertebrates. © Nature Clearly
