One thing that I took with me from our Charleston trip is a new profound appreciation for the many different shades of green in nature. Green gardens are very common in Charleston because the warm, wet and humid climate simply lends itself to lush green tropical plants. Here in my photo you see part of the garden of the Nathanial Russell House which is a historic house, build by the slave trader and wealthy merchant, Nathaniel Russell in 1808, nowadays converted into a museum. I love the green formal boxwood topiaries and hedges in the center island surrounded by mature unpruned trees. To me this garden radiates so much peace and tranquility. Another bonus is, that predominantly green gardens always feel somewhat cool and with Charleston’s hot and humid summers that is certainly a plus! Hope your week is off to a good start! Let me say, that without a doubt, my hens love themselves some Brussels Sprout leaves. I grew these #brusselssprouts from seed. They are heirloom Catskills for all you #gardennerds . . . Got the seeds from @sowtrueseed . . . Brussels Sprout leaves are full of antioxidants, especially kaempferol, which is great for reducing any inflammation and promotes heart health! High fiber low calorie/carb, tons of vitamins A, C and K. Also, some folate ( #b9 ) which is essential for blood 🩸 circulation and production, with a dash of manganese, which the ladies need for egg formation! Now, he’s renamed the program Big Green and has plans to expand. In April, 100 schools in Detroit will break ground on their own learning gardens, which are part playground and part outdoor classroom spaces where students learn about growing food. Big Green will then extend to Colorado Springs, Louisville, Long Beach, and San Antonio. In all, $25 million will go into the program, which hopes to see 100 gardens in each location by the end of 2020. “Kids today are totally disconnected from real food. People hate Bradford Pear trees because they have a rude smell in the springtime and they tend to be weak and fall over in storms. This one hardly smells at all, it is enormous, perfectly round like a lollipop, a dome of white flowers in spring, dark red and firey orange leaves in autumn, and the only tree that didn't drop so much as a twig in Atlanta's Snowpocalypse.
