That Suede's famous helmsman? Surprisingly, he became a producer after a touring stint with the Psychedelic Furs, whose career he actually made. While their biggest hit doesn't contain his credit, many from the group admitted that the hook of the tune on the link – that marimba thingy – was actually Ed Buller's suggestion. Thus, we can claim he already showed his prowess at that part of his career, though he noticed he didn't like the touring, so he moved to another position. Still, this causes me to ask – why didn't the group call him to produce them later on? Then again, the musicians he helmed were in some regards very close to the Psychedelic Furs, but they weren't playing in the same style. They may have been influenced by the Furs, but that's about all.

"Love My Way" is a song by British band The Psychedelic Furs.  It was released on June 26, 1982 as the first single from their third studio album Forever Now.  Written by the four members of the group and produced by Todd Rundgren (who also played marimba on the song) it was a Top 50 hit in over twenty countries and became a teen anthem of the 80s, featured in films and soundtracks for Valley Girl and many others.

The Psychedelic Furs 3rd studio album was released on 25 September 1982.

Two of the original members – the saxophonist Duncan Kilburn and the guitarist Roger Morris – abruptly left the group before recording had begun, and the producer of the band’s first 2 albums, Steve Lillywhite was unavailable. Drummer Vince Ely suggested Todd Rundgren, who quickly agreed. Rundgren would go on to play keyboards, marimba, and saxophone (”No Easy Street”) as well as bring in a number of other musicians, including Gary Windo, Ann Sheldon, and Flo & Eddie.

Forever Now received mostly positive reviews and peaked at #20 in the UK and #61 in the US (where it spent 32 weeks on the Billboard chart).

"Sister Europe" is a song by the English rock band the Psychedelic Furs, taken from the band's 1980 debut album, The Psychedelic Furs. Written by the band and produced by Steve Lillywhite, it was released in February 1980 by CBS as the album's second single.

The Psychedelic Furs traditionally opened their live shows with "Sister Europe" during the early part of their career.[1]

Composition

Singer Richard Butler recalled Lillywhite's directions to him regarding the vocals: "He told me, 'Go down to the pub, have a couple of beers, and when you come back, I want you to sing like it's three in the morning, and you're talking on the telephone to someone'".[1] According to Butler, the lyrics conveyed sadness over his then-girlfriend moving away, and were written using imagery, "instead of saying 'My bird's gone to Italy and I miss her'".[1]

Release

"Sister Europe" was first released as a single in the UK in February 1980. The initial 7-inch release was on the Epic label, but this was withdrawn and replaced by a CBS version. Both releases had the unusual feature of a double A-side featuring two versions of the song, short (3:45) and long (4:13).[2] In the US, the song was not released as a single but was used as the B-side for Columbia's 12-inch promo single of "We Love You".[3]

An official music video was produced in 1980, directed by British filmmakers Don Letts and Mick Calvert.[4]

Reception

In The Rough Guide to Rock, writer Alex Ogg called it "an intoxicating song that announced the group's distinctive style", comparing it to the Velvet Underground mixed with David Bowie.[5]

AllMusic writer Dave Thompson described Butler's vocal as "a masterpiece of understatement, whispered intimacy".[1]

The single reached No. 47 on the New Zealand charts.[6]

The song and its production were a direct influence on The Replacements' "Within Your Reach", one of Paul Westerberg's first efforts to compose outside the group's hardcore mien.[7]

Cover versions

Jazz tenor saxophonist Gary Windo performed a cover version of the song on his 1988 album Deep Water.[8]

Iva Davies and Icehouse recorded a rendition on the 1995 album The Berlin Tapes.[9]

The Italian synth-pop band Bluvertigo covered the song in 2001, as the B-side to their single "L'assenzio (The Power of Nothing)".

Foo Fighters released a cover of "Sister Europe" as the B-side to the 2002 single "All My Life".[10] This version also appeared as a bonus track on the French release of the band's One by One album.[11]
