04. Crash Bandicoot Purple & Spyro Orange (Vicarious Visions, 2004)
Watch me suffer through this game here!
After the shock and disappointment I experienced learning about the cancelled Crash & Spyro platformer title by Toys for Bob, it only seemed fitting to revisit the crossover(s) we actually got.
Hoo boy, this one is rough.
Split into two simultaneous releases and sporting a link cable trading mechanic a-la Pokémon (except in this case, it's for almost completely functionless trading cards), this duology falls into the oft-maligned "minigame adventure" genre, with a series of side-scrolling hub areas stringing together a collection of non sequitur challenges into a very basic campaign.
The more platforming-focused minigames in Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage are relatively inoffensive (having been built on the same foundation as Vicarious Visions' previous Game Boy Advance Crash titles), but the often auto-scrolling flight and vehicle-focused segments that make up the majority of Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy are particularly tedious. As if to add insult to injury, at about the 85% mark, it's revealed that the player is also expected to backtrack for the sake of completing every side objective or replaying each minigame multiple times in order to unlock the final area and confront the incredibly brief and unsubstantial final boss.
What on paper should be an exciting crossover of gaming icons more closely resembles publisher-mandated shovelware than the comparatively solid prior GBA output of either franchise. I can't even say I'd recommend it to morbidly curious Spyro or Crash fans; it really is nothing more than pure 2000-aughts handheld filler; your time is better spent elsewhere.

Live action Eggman and Bowser (2023) interaction head canons
The likelihood of Paramount and Illumination working together on a film is low - however here are some scattered ideas for them. It would be interesting if their crossover is similar to the movie Roger Rabbit.
Firstly, when Bowser and Eggman team up against their heroes they learn to get over some biases towards each other. For example Eggman thought Bowser was just a violent beast but he actually had shown to be clever. Bowser would had at first glance view Eggman as some mustached nerd that just works with robots but the scientist had shown knowledgeable leadership over others with an iron fist which is something to take note of.
Eggman would also offer some goat latte to Bowser from the Mean Bean Coffee Cafe. The dragon turtle would rather have tea but check before drinking in case it’s poisoned.
They would discuss how to stop the heroes. Bowser would suggest kidnapping.
"Haven't you already tried that?" asked Eggman.
"Can't really argue with kidnapping - it's tradition." Bowser would reply.
"That's not tradition!" said Eggman, "Doing the same thing over and over again to expect different results is the definition of insanity."
Bowser knowingly crossed his arms.
"Just like you when you fail to get rid of the hedgehog."
If the live action Eggman decided to do the floss dance Bowser would greatly disapprove of it. Bowser would show Eggman how it’s done with some of his own break dancing skills based on the D.D.R. Mario Mix game.
Eggman would also be shocked to learn that Bowser has a musical talent in rock and roll. The scientist displays his robots using A.I. that can play music too.
“A machine doing music is nothing compared to a real person making it.” said Bowser, "Learning by practice to being a better player is what true art is all about."
Eggman would want to use an element of surprise by switching things up against their heroes by recommending that Bowser fight the Sonic Gang while the scientist face the Mario Bros. He’ll need enough data about the cartoony plumbers (perhaps information about Bowser secretly in case of a double cross were to happen) to combat them.
#eggman#bowser#mario bros#sonic the hedgehog#head canon#remember that gba crash and spyro crossover?#Wish those older games were executed better#The concept of N. Cortex fighting Spyro and Ripto going against Crash is interesting

Spyro: Attack of the Rhynocs - Chateau Ripto:
“Final fight in the game, and once again...it’s Ripto. I am sick and tired of this dude. He may be memorable and very charismatic but he has appeared in way too many games. At least the fight itself was pretty decent. I love when you have to use all of the power-ups you unlocked, in order to complete a challenge.”

Next on my list: The Crash Bandicoot GBA trilogy.
First up, Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure. It... sure is a Crash Bandicoot game on the Gameboy Advance. The plot is paper thin, you collect crystals and gems as usual, fight Cortex, all the usual stuff. I guess I was kind of impressed that they incorporated pseudo-3D chase levels into it. Not bad by any means, just kinda... generic.
Crash Bandicoot 2: N-Tranced had a bit more originality to it. We've got a new villain, N. Trance, a bit of a different plot structure with your friends being brainwashed, or in Crash's case badly xeroxed? Fake Crash's boss battle was pretty unique, I'll give you that. And the fact you can play as Crunch and Coco once you save them, that's kinda cool. Might be my favourite of the three.
Finally, Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage. It's a minigame compilation with platforming and awkward cameos stapled to it. Not sure what else to say. I feel like they missed an opportunity to do more with a crossover game, but I guess they were limited by what you can do in a portable game?
For the most part, not bad entries in the series considering they were porting over a native 3D game over to a 2D portable. Honestly it kind of gave me Donkey Kong Country vibes. Which makes sense, I guess? Partially clothed animal hero whose iconic item is a wooden container versus megalomaniac with a punny name? Maybe that should be the crossover they went for...
My latest self-imposed challenge: To 100% the Crash Bandicoot trilogy.
I only briefly had the original PlayStation, and one of the few games I had for it was Crash Bandicoot 2. I never managed to finish it.
So far I have 102% in Crash 1, 100% in Crash 2, and 60% in Crash 3.
These games are so hard and frustrating in entirely new and exciting ways. But that's good, right?

I love this image from the GBA spyro 2 manual because you have Gulp and Crush who actually look pretty good in this render, and then theres Ripto who honest to god looks like a model you'd see in the Roblox free models catalogue
#.txt#Spyro#Like i could absolutely see that specific render in a Who Killed Spyro Obby type game or some shit like that

Crusher, if you were to pick anything from the Spyro games you disliked, what would you like to see in an actual Spyro game, and why?
At the risk of being predictable, a Crash/Spyro crossover that isn't a mediocre mini-game collection pls.
Aside from that, I suppose Red's concept as a dragon elder who went rogue was a decent idea… that was swiftly discarded when Shadow Legacy decided to retcon it. While I'd prefer to have more non-dragon villains, as dragon villains are kind of like the hedgehog OCs of the Spyro community, I'd prefer him getting a second try over the other examples if it came to that, since he has more potential to have an actual character beyond Generic Entity of Darkness.
On the other hand, if Gnasty Gnorc gets used again, maybe don't reduce him to the role of disposable first boss. I know he wasn't much of a character in Spyro 1 due to lack of screentime, but if you're gonna bring him back, you might as well make use of it and give him more time to actually shine in the spotlight while it's on him. I still think the unused idea of him teaming up with Ripto is kickass, and would love to see it come to fruition.
In general, despite my feelings on A Hero's Tail, as well as Legends and Skylanders, I'm willing to give a chance to anything from those games making their way into the Classic universe, as long as they're appropriately modified to fit the classic style rather than the other way around. As long as the Insomniac feel is kept intact, we're good. Because y'see, I don't dislike Hero's Tail just because it's different: I dislike it because I consider the changes they went with to be a detriment or pointless… well, that and everyone's characterizations taking a hit. Compare that to Enter the Dragonfly, which I've made no secret of my soft spot for in spite of its many issues, and the isometric GBA titles, which I also enjoy just fine. (If I had to put on my objective goggles, I'd say Season of Flame is the best of the post-Insomniac installments.)

//oh wait, I forgot to ask your thoughts about the GBA games, his appearance in Skylanders and also that lost forgotten cartoon intro that failed to meet the light of day...//
{{Sorry this is a little late but I’ll give my answer on this too! c:}}
Crash Tag Team Racing
So I’ll start here cause I forgot it in the last one, but this one I thought it was an okay game with some funny moments in the open hub world and crazy stuff, like the Die-O-Ramas or gags.
Although as far as the Crash racing games go, I think this was one of the weaker ones in the actual race sections in my opinion I feel like CTR was still the best kart racer of the 3 main ones.
Cancelled Crash Bandicoot Cartoon
Now I’ve seen this supposed intro to an old 2D cartoon that never released, and it did look promising like a show that would have come out in that time. I’m sure had it released it would have been fairly good. c:
But I don’t know if you’ve heard but there are rumors that a Crash show will be coming soon, again just rumors but if it happens I hope for the best. :3
GBA Crash Games.
Can’t comment much on these since I never played most of them for myself, except seeing parts of N. Tranced which I think that N. Trance as a character is a really interesting one that would be cool to see more of. However there is one GBA game of Crash’s I did have.
Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto’s Rampage
So I thought this game was decent enough, although even comparing it to other GBA Crash games it was minigames galore and the crossover I’ve thought to this day could have been way better had it been on consoles.
Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy
Might as well mention this since Crash still has a major role here. Between the two halves of the crossover I think this was the weaker one, I love Spyro perhaps even more than Crash but this didn’t feel much like a Spyro game let alone a Crash one.
I mean again, minigames galore. I had another GBA Spyro game that was more like his games “Attack of the Rhynocs” but this was just endless minigames sadly.
Skylanders Imaginators
Now this was Crash’s first real reintroduction into the world since he’d been completely missing from gaming for over ten years before the N. Sane Trilogy. I’ve manage to check out his section of the game, and I found it fairly decent and interesting that Fake Crash of all people was the actual antagonist of that part. XD
Skylanders Academy
Not a game but I thought I’d give my opinion since he’s here too. Sure he’s not the main character and he only has a guest appearance in 3 different episodes of the show but I liked his presence.
He seemed to be a bit controversial because this is the one time (besides that one Crash 2 commercial) where he’s actually had a speaking voice, and not the high pitched kind that VA Jess Harnell has given him over the years, but a deeper voice with an Australian accent.
Now many people had issue with that, and while I do prefer the sillier side and higher tone of voice I didn’t mind this, I noticed after his first appearance they made him goofier since it was lacking at first and this version of him cause of things like this makes him one of the more unique versions of him I think, cause he speaks and is different from others.
Though the version of Crash from the games is still my favorite I’d say.

On May 26th 2019, I finally got to go to the Comic Con with my Dad to meet Tom Kenny, who voiced Spyro the Dragon *On Ripto's Rage, Year of the Dragon, Enter the Dragonfly, and Reignited Trilogy*, Sgt. James Byrd *On Year of the Dragon and Reignited Trilogy*, the Professor *On Ripto's Rage, Year of the Dragon, Enter the Dragonfly, and Reignited Trilogy*, and Astor *On Reignited Trilogy* from the Classic Spyro series, and Stink Bomb, Arbo, Pipsqueak, and Shield Shredder from Skylanders.
I got him to sign my autograph where Stink Bomb is but accidentally almost signed where my Skylanders OC Moon Fang is where Christopher Sabat *Who voiced Vegeta and Piccolo from Dragon Ball Z, and also who I think Moon Fang should be voiced by* is meant to sign, but only appeared during Saturday May 25th in the morning because my Dad had work on that day, and said if he was around anywhere else then Tom already wrote my name for Christopher where he will be signing his autograph on.
I even got to ask Tom Kenny questions about the Nintendo Switch port of Spyro Reignited Trilogy and about Spyro's appearance in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled due to rumors and the fact he was in the GBA/N-Gage version of CNK, and he said he hoped for the Switch port of Reignited Trilogy to happen, and also hoped Activision and Beenox hire him to voice Spyro in CTRNF where he would probably be a DLC playable racer since Spyro guest stared in the handheld version of Crash Nitro Kart, all because he wants to keep voicing Spyro.
Like Steven Blum from last year, he told me I know a lot more than he does.
Also at the Comic Con, while waiting in line to see Tom Kenny, I was playing with my Pikachu in my Pokeball Plus *I own the Pokeball Plus Bundle of Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu for Nintendo Switch*, after getting an autograph from Tom Kenny, I got to eat from the Mustache Pretzel Food Truck where I had a mustache shaped garlic parm pretzel with nacho cheese dip and a Wild Cherry Pepsi.
I had such a good time there, even though it was short because of the line waiting for Tom Kenny.

10 Characters I'd Like to See in CTR Nitro Fuelled
I'm still really excited about this. I've always preferred the original to Mario Kart, and I hope that the remake knocks both of them out of the park. But there are some characters that I'd like to see in Nitro Fuelled that, mostly, weren't in the original. So here are 10 in no particular order.
N. Brio - it's weird, yet sad, that N. Brio wasn't in the original. Even if he was included as DLC, why not give him some love now? Put him on the good side (I only say that because he seemed like a protagonist during Crash 2), then both sides have some wacky scientists supporting them. Honestly, all the characters from the original trilogy deserve some love, especially now that there's little excuse not to. Speaking of which...
Koala Kong - I can kinda see why Kong wasn't in the original since Tiny and Dingodile were big, hulking bad guys and Kong probably would've been seen as overkill. But he was a thing a year before Tiny and two before Dingodile. Why not consider him first? And why not put him in the remake? If the developers are focusing on the character aspect of the game, Kong is different enough from Tiny and Dingodile, so... why not?
Crunch Bandicoot - they're including Nitro Kart styled cars in the game, why not include characters that were around at that time? Honestly, I'm fairly blind on Crunch after Wrath of Cortex, but I hear that he's the stereotypical giant idiot, which is so overdone. But he's still big, can still have a similar driving style to the big bad guys and the good guys could do with a character like that.
Nina Cortex - why not include Cortex's niece? I don't know much about her, so she'd be low down on the anticipated characters list. But if we're mixing old with new, Nina's a good way to go. Plus, it could tease a Twinsanity remake, which would make some fans happy.
Spyro - I said these were in no particular order, but I would definitely put Spyro at the top of the list. If this became a Crash/Spyro universe crossover, it would be incredible. It would be a great way to make this feel like a new game, while still being a remake of the old at its core. Plus, it'd help people forget that the only other times they crossed over were in God awful GBA games and the fairly forgettable Skylanders.
Penta Penguin - OK, Penta was in the original game, but out of all the characters in that, his status is the most uncertain as the only way to access him was via cheat code. And the AAA industry hates cheat codes these days since they can't be sold. So they could either include the code regardless or have him be unlocked through gaining all the gold stars in time trial mode. Or, most likely, he'll be sold back as DLC. Or maybe he's a pre-order bonus. Who can guess with the gaming industry, especially Activision Blizzard?
Sheila - if we're going to include Spyro, why not include his allies? Honestly, it was tough to choose between them all. But considering Sheila is really popular, she's a no brainer. Honestly, I can't talk about how good she is in the Reignited Trilogy as I'm still working through 2 at the minute. But, yeah. I'd download her if she was DLC.
Agent 9 - Agent 9 is insane and loveable. Just... yes. I'd give the spot to Sgt Bird, but if they're going to include Penta, it'd be pointless including two birds. And Bentley isn't that popular as far as I know. So... Agent 9 is here by default. Plus, would you rather have him or Rilla Roo? Exactly.
Elora - this was another tough one. But with Pura taking the cat spot (ruling Hunter out), and wanting a bit of a gender balance in there, Elora was the one I went with. Plus, she's adorable and loveable from the get go, while Bianca is a redeemed antagonist (but she's still adorable).
Ripto - why should the protagonists have all the fun? Yeah, he dies at the end of Spyro 2, but considering this is a spin-off, we can say it's in an alternate reality. Plus, him and Cortex on the same team? Yes please.
Is there anyone I've missed? Feel free to leave your thoughts... somewhere 😜.
