Nightmare :)

I love different interpretations of Nightmare.

Nightmare fights Dream not because of balance, but because he's petty and still bitter about their childhood. It really has nothing to do with maintaining order he just wants Dream to suffer.

Nightmare doesn't care about what Dream did. He just wants to throw the multiverse into chaos and negativity so that everyone pays for what was done to him.

Nightmare plays the monster everyone sees in him, because really—what's the point of trying to be something different when no one will ever see more then a monster?

Nightmare is the cruel creature they believe him to be. There’s no redemption. Nightmare is dead—what remains is pure negativity, incapable of balance.

Or Nightmare does maintain the balance. He does only what’s necessary. But he gets misunderstood.

Nightmare does the dirty work alone—

Or the only one he keeps is Killer, just to handle the work that makes him look above it all. It makes him a far bigger threat when he gives the orders instead of getting his hands dirty.

Nightmare does care about the gang a lot. Maybe he tries his best, to make their lives a little less miserable.

Or he just uses them feeds off their negativity, abuses and manipulates them, makes things worse.(like an emotinal Vanpirer maybe ?)

Or it’s a mix he cares, but he’s selfish. He keeps them around even when he knows he’s poison to them.

Or he doesn’t know. Maybe he’s completely unaware of how harmful he really is.

And I adore the idea of Passive Nightmare as a ghost like an angel on his shoulder, trying to keep him in check.( I especially love comics where Passive is the reason a “New Nightmare” slowly finds happiness again. Or where he gets to interact with ghost Papyrus or XChara.)

Evil antagonist. Antihero. Abuser. Nerd. Hopeless romantic. Villain. Father figure. King. Guardian. God. Misunderstood. Hopeless.Dead. Influenced. Corrupted. Lover. Caretaker.

There are so many ways to write him (to be fair, this goes for almost every character), and yet every version makes me want to read more. I love them all.

Girl help- why are some of y'all acting like Li Haolin kills off every woman he writes. Like, I'm not here to defend him on everything in regards to how he handles women cuz I do have my own minor gripes, but that thing in particular isn't true. Plenty of the Link Click women lived/got a happy ending and there's still women who are major characters who haven't died yet, so uh- for those not familiar with his other works, please don't fall for some of the doomerism going on about tbhx women who haven't even showed up yet.

The GAR with their jedi: look at our generous general protecting us while sacrificing themselves, isn't the jedi so cool? But we dearly wish they wouldn't put their lives at such risks. Look at how graceful they're with their techniques and words. Our poor hearts can't take it. The Coruscant Guards: Rat. We found him in the dumpster. Stinky and foul. Lost him several times but he will come back.

The idea that only Ulmo or Nienna care about Middle-earth and do anything to help Eruhini is a strange misconception because Tolkien pretty clearly shows that at least Manwë is watching very closely what's going on and sometimes even interferes? It's just that the Valar mostly seem to work through the elements they represent, which if you think about it is pretty neat.

Like there are various instances where the wind acts up suddenly, causing storms or rising in just the right moment (as in ROTK, clearing the air for the Rohirrim and speeding Aragorn's journey as he sails for Minas Tirith)

And even more obviously, the Eagles. Tolkien specifically says that the Eagles are Manwë's advocates in Middle-earth, providing miraculous aid when all else fails. Without the Eagles, Beren and Lúthien's quest would have failed and Huor would not have got to Gondolin (which then would have prevented Eärendil's success or even meant he was never born). They give crucial aid to Gandalf more than once. The Eagles also help Fingon to save Maedhros, because Manwë "would not wholly abandon the Noldor". Tolkien recognises that the Eagles are "deus ex machina", and in this case, the meaning is quite literal.

Then there are the Istari, envoys of the Valar: while there is proof of only Gandalf's success, even just the efforts of one of the Wizards was enough to bring down Sauron.

As for Ulmo, you could argue that he is responsible for the whole Eärendil and Elwing arc - and that it was a job between him and Manwë. It's Manwë's Eagles that bring Huor to Gondolin, and Ulmo later sends Huor's son Tuor into the hidden city. Tuor and Eärendil both get sea-longing in their hearts. During the flight of the survivors of Gondolin, Eagles are again present and bring up the body of Glorfindel, making you wonder whether they would have interfered more in the Balrog fight if Glorfindel had not stepped up to protect the refugees - and Eärendil, the fated saviour of Middle-earth. Also, Ulmo rescues Elwing when she casts herself into the sea, turning her into a bird so that she can fly to find Eärendil. Water and air and birds keep showing up in the stories of Eärendil and Elwing and if that's not proof of Manwë and Ulmo's plotting, I don't know what is. I mean, it's even said in the first pages of the Silmarillion that they are fast friends and closely allied from the beginning! Eärendil becoming a star also in a weird way even combines the elements of Ulmo, Manwë, and Varda: bearing the Silmaril, Eärendil sails an immortal ship in the sea of heaven and stars, forever as a sign of hope to the Children of Ilúvatar.

What about the other Valar? If we keep in mind that they chiefly work through the elements they represent, their abilities to interfere are limited (and this is a self-imposed limitation clearly). Yavanna's creation of the Ents proves to be a pretty great one in The Two Towers, although you can argue to what degree she is influencing the events. More obviously In Shelob's lair, Sam calls for Varda, and the light of the phial of Galadriel comes alive in his hand and smites the great spider, helping Sam to defeat the monster. Also, during Sam and Frodo's desperate march through the hellscape that is Mordor, Sam yearns for a little bit of light and water to hearten him - and lo and behold, he gets these exact things as if Varda and Ulmo personally delivered.

In other words, the Valar are a lot more active in Middle-earth than they get credit for, and they work in subtle and indirect ways because only then can they make sure they don't accidentally kill a lot of the Children.

Sitting here kinda mad at the idea that people are more willing to forgive magneto for his problems and wave off the really atrocious things as bad writing. But not do the same to Xavier like... is it really that easy to think that, when someone is given expectations and fail to meet them its harder to forgive than someone who made mistakes but atone? Its not an either or its both unfair to shit on someone who's made mistakes but wants to atone regardless of the standing.

No one talks about the bad writing with charles that they fumble his "complexity" either way in that when he does bad shit he either never atones and its shown as a "good" thing OR a "bad" thing and either way villainize him. Rather than actually do something with that and actually HAVE him make amends and evolve without him fucking DYING. ALL. THE. TIME

Have a moment in an x-men story where they're like "no. No more martyrs, dying is overrated and you're gonna fucking FIX your own messes and take the long way around to do it right this time. And you'll fumble and inevitably make more mistakes but you TRY to be better and actually DO it. What little you can."

Okay okay. Hear me out.

So my friend Daz890VA and I do something called Roleplay Night. I play as Dream, and Daz plays as Nightmare.

We came to this one scene, Chapter 4, where Nightmare turrned Passive again.

His design would be his hoodie, a dark purple with dark teal splotches, sweatpants, his right side of his skull still cracked, and a purple mixed with teal pupil in his normal eye.

Now in this scene, they stand in a cave, where Dream was about to get killed. The treestump was there beforehand. When he turned Passive again, and after Dream gave him a long hug, crying in his arms, P!NM asked where they were. Turing around, he saw the stump.

He then asked "What happened?"

Dream told him that the tree, or their Mother was killed by Nightmare when he was corrupted.

He started laughing with insanity, telling Dream that he was lying. Dream shook his head and said that it was true.

"I'm a monster, Dream!" Nightmare cried. "If only I hadn't eaten those stupid apples!"

Dream goes to comfort the bean and tell him it wasn't his fault.

Any thoughts? (Also, sorry if this is long. TwT)

Not long at all! I myself have a currently ongoing Error and Ink RP, which has been going for barely a month, and yet oh my GOSH it is ABSOLUTELY INSANE, sooo much has happened and it's crazy plot

It sounds like P!Nightmare doesn't remember his time as C!Nightmare, I assume y'all went with the canon that C!Nightmare was an entirely seperate creature that took him over? That's very interesting to explore, and him coming to terms with all that C!Nightmare has done augh, that'd be heavy for the poor guy aofjqpjcpqci and it sounds like it's letting you explore the Apple twins' dynamic in a really interesting way !!

anyway one thing i think TDP does very very well is how it uses visual storytelling so strongly to indicate character mindset(s) and progression

Claudia's hair is the most obvious example - we don't need to be told she did something fucked up in 3x09 to bring her father back, because as soon as we see more white hair we know, from context and worldbuilding clues, that she did. It allows a lot to be communicated but not directly told, and it carries weight accordingly

Then there's more subtle ones - the sun being behind Janai when she steps up behind the horn ruins vs Karim not having one, because she is the true and fair queen and he is not, as well as her being right in how she handles matters legally and him being wrong in how he handles matters (il)legally.

There are also examples of Rayla's S1 binding - she's literally uneven/unsymmetrical and subsequently off-kilter - as a chain she has to be freed from, and how Callum has the golden bars around his wrists in his arc 2 design that also look like he's wearing permanent quasi-chains (because of course he is)

The crown of Katolis is a literally broken circle/chain, Aaravos walking around being literally heartless, how certain spells appear and a perpetual emphasis on circles (people being surrounded, objects, etc.)

There's a lot being communicated and is one of the reasons, I think, the show is so rich because our brains take it in subconsciously if nothing else, and then we can notice it more consciously on rewatches and subsequently appreciate it, and it just adds to how many layers are on screen at any given time

<:)? I don't know what kind of answer you're expecting, since my answer is usually mostly the same each time someone asks!!

I drew bad for a long time!! I continue to draw bad!

Every time I try to draw something new I've never drawn before, it's bad the first few times. That's just a part of the process.

And then, I do research online, look at reference images, look at other artists and see how they choose to tackle things, learn and then adapt to a style that I prefer better.

I practice. I draw every day. I beat my head against the wall until something looks sort of presentable.

Don't forget, each time you see a post by me, that art is just one single successful attempt at drawing compared to the 15+ sketches that weren't good enough to continue.

a brief list of ask game tips, from somebody who struggles to give and receive interaction:

send an ask to the person you reblog the game from, unless they specifically say not to! reblogging without giving them that participation is honestly really rude. you don't even have to go back and read the answer, you can just send and move on!

this one is more of a hassle, but i personally like to try and send asks to the people who reblog a game from me too. this helps to ensure that everybody gets at least one message. it isn't always convenient or possible, but it's nice to do when you can.

if the ask game is about ocs or other characters, or anything that requires specifying something, it's good to either list some available characters in the tags or have one you'll default to if askers don't specify. not everybody who's sending an ask will be deeply familiar with your blog, and it makes it easier for people to give you that interaction if you take a moment to lay it out for them.

if you reblog an ask game and don't get any asks, there's no shame in re-reblogging it a little while later or posting a reminder that you're still open to asks. posts get buried easily on a busy dash, and sometimes it takes a little repetition for people to see them (or decide to send something).

you may be more likely to get asks if you have anon on (personally i almost never send messages off anon unless i'm friends with the person i'm sending it to). not everybody wants to open up their inbox to nonsense, though. your comfort comes first!
