How Jon Huntsman Made Me Fall In Love With Him
By Kayleigh Mohler
I’m a 20 year old college student who loves the color pink and when I was little and asked what I wanted to be when I grew up I would always answer with the same response. A princess. Which basically just meant that I was never going to stop being a girly-girl. But, when I was little I was also a very stubborn perfectionist. I would not settle for good enough, ever. While I’ve now realized I’m never going to be a real princess, I’m still a very stubborn lady and it takes a lot for someone to impress me; especially someone who is interviewing for the most important job in the world, the President of the United States. That’s why I still find it hard to believe that the relatively unknown Jon Huntsman not only impressed me, but also made me fall in love in with him.
If you know anything about Jon Huntsman, he seems like the last person a 20-year-old wanna-be political princess would be supporting. But the President has the most important job because he or she has a direct impact on my future. If you take a look at our nation’s catastrophic debt problem it doesn’t look good for the future of anyone in my generation. That’s why I know the 2012 election needs to be about bringing the search for solvency and a new era of fiscal conservative behavior to Washington.
Solvency is something that I have to face as a college student all the time. Everyone who has taken out a student loan knows that we are obligated to pay it back once we graduate. Colleges make you take an online loan-counseling course before you can even get the money.  They make sure that we know that is our duty. Sadly, most politicians in Washington D.C. have forgotten that the United States has a duty as well. But congressmen apparently don’t have to take loan-counseling classes. They seem to forget that every dollar spent in Washington through deficit spending is being charged to my generation. The worst part is, the benefits of the spending aren’t being applied to us. We’re paying for everyone else’s debt before we’re even out in the real world.
That’s why, when I was approached to join Students for Daniels, I was all for it. Mitch Daniels, the great governor of my state, knows that this is not acceptable behavior. But, as we all know, Mitch isn’t running, and thus Students for Solvency was formed to try and redirect our call for economic stability. Our message cannot die with Mitch, and it cannot wait until 2016. There is already too much misinformation on the debt, and we need to call attention to the real problems now. My generation cannot bear the burden of our nation’s debt for four more years. That’s why having the PAC was not enough for me--I needed to find a candidate who believes in the message that Students for Daniels was founded on and who would forget the political rhetoric and stand up and fight for the future of the United States of America; because that future is dependent on us.
I was looking for someone real. In 2008 I wasn’t old enough to vote but I didn’t fall for the charismatic speeches that spoke to the rest of my peers. I kept calling for actions and plans, and none were ever given. That led to a lot of disappointed students. By the time I graduated high school in May 2009 my friends were already noticing that the promises of the 2008 election were not being fulfilled, they told me they wished they had realized how much the Health Care Reform was going to cost. The political rhetoric made it sound like it was going to pay for itself, my generation is learning that means we’re expected to pay for it with our taxes. The only way to stop is to become proactive; therefore, I knew I would not be alone in trying to find a substantial candidate to carry out our plan for financial competence. When I heard about Jon Huntsman, I was pretty hesitant. But after researching him, he at the very least seemed different. He didn’t fit the cookie cutter mold on the right OR the left that has failed to make solvency an issue, let alone a priority. He intrigued me and I thought I would give this former Governor and Ambassador a shot, after all I could identify with both his fiscal conservative policies and his somewhat more moderate social policies, but I still wasn’t sold.
Last week, I had the chance to be on a conference call with Governor Huntsman along with 40 other Students for Solvency members. I needed to hear this guy out for myself, and I was not disappointed.
Before we even got to the Q&A session I could tell he was taking on the debt as one of his main issues. He stressed the importance of a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution. “It keeps everybody honest,” he said. (A politician calling to require more honesty? Seems like a step in the right direction already.) Plus he pointed out that Utah underwent a tax reform under his leadership, something I think we desperately need at the federal level. Not only did he simplify Utah’s tax code, but he also implemented a statewide flat tax which no doubt helped turn around the state’s economy. He also implemented the largest tax cut in his states history in 2007 that helped both businesses and the middle class. It was said the tax cuts saved the average family in Utah over $300 a year. After I found this out I understand why Utah was voted the number one managed state under Governor Huntsman. That’s the kind of proven leadership we need to bring to the nation.
Once we got to the Q&A session, his foreign policy experience shined through. By serving as Ambassador to China, he has gained more foreign policy experience than the rest of the GOP field, and this experience seems to have led him to a decidedly realistic foreign policy. The Governor insists at looking at the whole picture instead of just drawing conclusions from little pieces. By this point he was beginning to win my vote. I could tell this guy is organized and has a good head on his shoulders and someone that I was starting to imagine gaining a lot of respect not only from my generation, but the American people as a whole.
The final thing that really solidified my opinion of Governor Huntsman is he does stand out from the sea of Republicans seeking the nomination. When Governor Huntsman was asked about repealing the Sarbanes Oxley bill, instead of taking the easy response like so many others, he said it would have to be analyzed further because it’s better to see if there is anything worth working with in the bill before you completely dismantle it.
That right there made me fall in love with him.
That phone call convinced this fiscal conservative girly-girl that he is the right choice for 2012. Like I said, I don’t settle for just good enough, I want the best. Jon Huntsman is the candidate whose own interests align with my own, and I believe they align with Students for Solvency’s goals as well. We don’t want more government; we want government that tackles the problems that we are facing. Right now we are facing unsustainable debt, perpetual unemployment, and job-killing regulation. Governor Huntsman is the only candidate with the record and focus to tackle these problems on our behalf. He is helping us raise awareness for our message because he is making solvency part of HIS message. He’s the guy who is going to ride into D.C. and make those hard choices for us. He’s putting us first because we are the future of the United States. I am supporting Governor Huntsman because he is making the choices that support me.
Kayleigh is a junior at Ball State University studying Political Science and Business Economics. She is the treasurer of BSU’s chapter of College Republicans and has recently started the Indiana for Huntsman twitter and facebook pages to spread the word and get others to #JoinTheHunt in 2012.
