I sometimes think about the Phaeacian ships (also sometimes called Scherian ships) from The Odyssey (or at least Homer's telling of that story). Mythological ships that were able to be steered by thought alone and needed no pilot (and if I remember also no crew for the most part). You just told it where you wanted to go and it would navigate itself and be the fastest ship in the planet as it does so.

There is very little information about them as they are only mentioned as the plot device to get Odysseus finally home, and were destroyed by Poseidon for helping Odysseus, but I do sometimes wonder how damn good actual IRL Scherian ships were and how fine their sailors were for Homer to attribute semi-sentient and swift status onto their ships. I wish there were more myths about them.

I don't have a copy of The Odyssey anymore so the best I can do is a quote from Wikipedia:

"Tell me also your country, nation, and city, that our ships may shape their purpose accordingly and take you there. For the Phaeacians have no pilots; their vessels have no rudders as those of other nations have, but the ships themselves understand what it is that we are thinking about and want; they know all the cities and countries in the whole world, and can traverse the sea just as well even when it is covered with mist and cloud, so that there is no danger of being wrecked or coming to any harm."

congratulations to me i have completed the online course and readings portion of the master naturalist certification program....hopefully doing the first of two required field days next weekend, and then will get started on 30 hours of volunteer work 🎉

honestly highly recommend master naturalist programs to anyone in the US who wants to learn more about their local nature + get involved with relevant volunteerism; the course wasn't difficult and while i felt like i had a good knowledge base going in i still learned A Lot, and i am excited to Meet People And Do Things. it's modeled on the master gardener program you may be more familiar with. they vary a bit from place to place but most states have one!

What game were you playing?

It's called The Roottrees are Dead.

You're a geneologist who is contacted after a devastating crash kills several members of this billionaire family called The Roottrees. A mysterious person gives you a huge list of names and asks you to complete a family tree, with a particular emphasis on blood relatives.

You have a basic 1998-era computer with a search engine, library access, and a periodicals database, and you have to figure out what to search and how to link clues to form a family tree.

This is an example of the notes I was keeping the first little bit of the game. You can see how webby it gets. You have to search anything mentioned- companies, books, movies, magazines, they all lead to more information. Hell, the co-stars in shows and movies lead to other connections on the family tree.

Saturday Anime Line Up

My internet was being such a dick today that my anime watching was so all over the place. It's like 10/2200 where I am and i still have four more anime left to watch before I can post!😫

Okay calm down First World Problems. Anyway, today actually had some really good episodes when i could watch them so I can count that to be a positive!😁

Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de

How can an anime go from making me groan from over done bad jokes to making my cry and need to grab multiple tissues? Ugh, its bad enough that I can't figure out the mysteries even though the clues are really there, I sucked at Encyclopedia Brown mysteries as a kid too, but for the real culprit to be a complete piece of shit that was only thinking of himself? This is almost as mind blowing as me realizing Kaji Yuki-san is the voice of Kagayama which is practically unrecognizable since it is pitched so low!🤯

Anne Shirley

When I was in high school I had a crush on this boy and he liked black hair. I always had dark brown almost black but I hated it and kept dying it shades of red for years. He was always looking at girls with black hair so I went to dye mine black and it was a huge mistake so I really felt for Anne. The dye was like tar and it ruined my hair for a long time. That guy ended up being an abusive jerk too that I had to get away from in the end. We all make mistakes in our youth. I guess that is the moral from both me and the anime.😅

Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru

I felt for Beryl in this one. That pain of seeing someone as a child in your eyes that has been hurt or abused and feeling helpless when you didn't cause the situation but now they don't trust anyone so they push you away. It's heartbreaking to go through but i am glad that in the end Mewi decided to at least give him a chance.😥

Kowloon Generic Romance

Wow. That was a lot to unpack. First poor Gwen. Miyuki is clearly being controlled by his dad. They had one night and then bam luggage. Now he's in Kowloon...or what we know as Kowloon. Yamae seems to be another anomaly and now that Reiko wants to leave Kudo-san lost it for a second. We are finally getting more piece to this puzzle and as to what that thing is in the sky too. Curiouser and curiouser as Alice said.🤔

Kuroshitsuji: Midori no Majo-hen

Wow, that was closest Ciel ever got other than the end of S1 to be one with Sebastian. He said 90% but we know...😏

Anyway...Ciel is back and in Hakushaku form so this village has another thing coming if they think they will be chasing out the Phantomhive household. Oh and Ciel was cute asking everyone to forget he was acting his age for the last few episodes. Like we would.😉

Looks like the arc ended and now we get some comfy slice of life for a bit. I know we are going into the next dungeon with the prince but I'm not sure if that will be a full arc or not. Either way, I like the chill time before the next big adventure starts.😁

Hibi wa Sugiredo Meshi Umashi

I ended up eating late so I naturally put this one off till I did and man was I smart to! Even though it seemed pretty tame of food for most of the episode all that seafood and the barbeque on the beach? I was drooling! Imagine if those oysters were clams though! Ugh, raw clams are my fav but I stay away from them now cause with the warming of the oceans you can get really sick now sadly.😩

Man that took forever to finish. Damn wifi. It took so long that some of my anime from Sunday already came out in Japan!😕

I decided to rank my servants in terms of how easy they'd be for a first time master to work with for no particular reason:

Nobunaga ( Archer ) : A++ : Loves to help out people in trouble and explain the whole master/servant dynamic to new mages because she hates stuffy old mages that think they know exactly what they're doing. Also very useful if a God has a grudge against you

Nobukastu: C-: While he has no problems following orders ( unless his sister is also summoned, then he won't listen to you ) - he's quite weak as a servant, and only makes up for it with the fact that he can come back from the dead an infinite number of times. However, he's filled with emotional trauma and prone to both having meltdowns and bringing danger to himself intentionally

Chaca: D : She's a pretty powerful servant with great potential, but also a beserker who's prone powerful fits of emotion. Mostly, though, she's not beginner friendly because she's not going to listen to you unless she wants to

Ranmaru B+: Not an incredibly powerful servant outside of space tech, but extremely loyal to you. They have some trouble making decisions of their own at times, but have enough will and confidence to be able to grow past that weakness easily with a good guiding hand

Okita: B-. Super loyal, super powerful and very serious. A little too serious. If you can handle her stubborn nature, though, all you'll need to contend with is the fact that she could start coughing up blood and not being able to move at any given moment during a fight. Not for the faint of heart.

Okita Alter C+: On one hand, she has enough destructive power to end the world. On the other, she has a poor memory, doesn't understand what she's doing as heoric spirit most of the time, and is easily bribed with sweets. Good for defense but not for tactical advice

Kagetora D+: Very picky about her masters. Will rarely chose to work with one, and will contest you if you order her to do anything she considers evil. Strong to a fault: she doesn't know her own strength. Also lacks any people skills and conscience. That being said, she'll still try to be a good person.

Jeanne A: very powerful servant type who can shield you from all sorts of troubles, and will act as your mother/big sister figure. Even heal you when you do stupid things that get you injured. Honestly, I'd be more concerned about Jeanne worrying herself sick over you than your own safety. Very bad with modern technology, though. Will also refuse to work with you if you are evil

Jeanne (Alter ) F-: You're lucky if she doesn't burn you to a crisp for the travesty of summoning her

Fergus ( Lily ) : B+ very good bodyguard!! Very sweet boy!! But so much much trauma !!

Mei Fan A-: Very sweet, genuine person who is too good for this world. But a little bit over-excitable and new to this servant stuff. But not at all new to fighting for her life and using her powers.

Stheno F: She doesn't want to be here and she doesn't want to listen to you. But she won't kill you. Probably. Unless you hurt her first.

Misato C : Quite new to this whole "servant" thing, and has very unique strength and weaknesses. That being said, the fact that she can't die and only hibernates in her flower form that retains her healing abilities gives you plenty of room to grow with her
