as someone with a bachelor’s degree in english, i am inexpressibly tired of people telling me to get highly specific jobs that often require highly specific degrees. “just go write for a magazine!” you need a journalism degree for that. “just teach!” you need a teaching certificate, and also fuck you. “just go work at a tutoring place!” tutoring children with learning disabilities, which make up the majority of the clientele at those places, requires not only a teaching certificate but a specialized master’s degree. “just go work at a library!” you need a master’s degree in library science to be a librarian. it is actually a highly skilled and extremely competitive field. you don’t just “go work at a library,” you train for years in the vain hope that you will get one of handful of available jobs. “just go work at a library.” the nerve. the unmitigated gall. “just go work at a library.” ugh.

The book of essays on the Mughal Empire that I'm reading is mostly really good but there's one essay from 1924 that reads like it was written by a classic Orientalist white boy except—plot twist!—the writer is a (Hindu) Bengali historian. He even says Mohammadan instead of Muslim and talks about the Roman empire 😭 Also he rants about the degeneration and decadence of the Mughal artistocracy which he makes sound really awesome. I think he thinks wokeness (or femininity) killed the Mughal Empire but imo if I were a Mughal aristocrat I too would spend all my time with the harem and the eunuchs instead of joining Aurangzeb's eternal military campaigns. Actually now that I think about it, the essay is a case study in reactionary grasping at straws bc the first half is all about how bad Aurangzeb was at running the military and budgeting and then in the second half he starts rambling about the decline of masculinity and rise in drinking alcohol and how that was the real problem. Idk man the Aurangzeb stuff kinda seems more important...
