Battle Theme - Zeno Blade Chronicle X
Season 1 Featured on: GilvaSunner's Highest Quality Video Game Rips: Volume 7
Ripped by turdl3
youtube
A lot of the time I spend on here is dedicated to explaining things in SiIvaGunner's history that I feel like I have a good grasp of. That is part of the intent with the blog - both to highlight noteworthy rips to people already deep in the sauce, but also to try and convey to people outside of the bubble, more casual fans, just how fascinating this whole channel and its goings-on are. But even though I consider myself to be very well researched on the channel, there are still times I'm caught off guard: I still don't know what to make of He is Back., I was taken aback by everything I'd missed in regards to waterwraith pokos, and rips like If Pazuzu Sneezes Do You Still Say Bless You? have sent me down little detective hunts for parts of internet history I'd entirely missed. But even amidst these, Battle Theme - Zeno Blade Chronicle X still sort of sticks out in my mind - because I've been baffled by it ever since I found SiIvaGunner back in Season 1.
Xenoblade Chronicles X is a game with a lot of history on SiIvaGunner, most evidently due to its lead composer, Hiroyuki Sawano. Channel oldhead dante has been taking cues from his incredibly distinct style of music for a majority of the Christmas Comeback Crisis' soundtrack, such as with 9来4s, and several rippers have followed suit from Season 1 and beyond with rips such as Kill & Learn (Recut Ver.). Xenoblade Chronicles X was just one more game to rip Sawano's music through - yet, as you might have already noticed, Battle Theme - Zeno Blade Chronicle X *isn't* using Xenoblade Chronicles X. "Zeno Blade Chronicle X" is a fake game, of which we see plenty of today, but back in March 2016 it was an odd one out. Just two months into the GiIvaSunner channel's life, it was (to my knowledge!) the first time that all the pretense of a rip being of actual video game music was dropped. Its unfortunate that the original comments section was lost with the GiIvaSunner termination, but I'm certain it was gleaming with confusion even back then.
But like...what *is* Zeno Blade Chronicle X? The joke died out within Season 1 after just three rips, and since then it's only been referenced within Season 3's nostalgia week and Season 7's April Fools day event that I covered yesterday with Our Sweet Pastry. The three rips made during Season 1, and the Season 3 throwback rip, all follow the same joke - arranging music from Xenoblade Chronicles X in the style of...EarthBound, of all games? I suppose there's a lot of context here I'm missing out - perhaps its a sly jab at ROMhacks such as the EarthBound Halloween Hack that Toby Fox made before Undertale, perhaps its poking fun at the many mediocre "(song) but in SNES instruments!!" arrangements that are all the rage especially nowadays...or perhaps EarthBound in particular just has such a strange sound to it, one so unbefitting of the tone of Hiroyuki Sawano's music, that it sounds very funny arranged in that style?
Either way, its what gave us Battle Theme - Zeno Blade Chronicle X, and through all of my confusion and feeling as if I'm not getting the joke, it is still REALLY funny in isolation. The thumbnail's abhorrent crunchiness, the "Megalovania" guitars contrasting so harshly with the bleep-bloopy main melody instrument, the harsh cymbal crash that stays throughout the song as a layer of percussion - it sounds like its falling apart on itself throughout the whole thing, yet carries itself through the entire battle theme in an oddly charming way. I mean, the lead instrument sounds kind of similar to the one used in Collision Clouds, there's something so oddly charming about that particular form of melody! There's so many reasons why the Zeno Blade Chronicle X rips have stuck in my mind, but its mainly just that I'm puzzled by them...like, are they meant to be rough around the edges, or is that just due to their Season 1-ness? Are they poking fun at anything in particular? What led to this becoming popular enough with the team for them to officially begin ripping Fake Games just two months in?
All those thoughts race through my mind every time I'm reminded of Battle Theme - Zeno Blade Chronicle X - all the while I'm banging out to the tune itself. Xenoblade Chronicles X's Battle Theme itself is already fantastic, and this silly goofy take on it keeps that spirit underneath all of its crust, preserving the game's legacy in the strangest of ways. This is one mystery that I don't know if I'll ever truly *wholly* understand (though I'm sure making this post will lead me on the right path at least!) but it, at the same time, embodies so much of the fun of Season 1's unpredictability! None of us watching ever knew what to expect from the channel, and I'm sure nobody watching had "SNES Bootleg of Xenoblade Chronicles X for the Wii U" on their Bingo card. That unpredictability was so novel then, and still lives on today - and in some ways, it all reached its first new high with Battle Theme - Zeno Blade Chronicle X.

on Megalovania
This wasn’t what I originally planned to write today, but things change when cool news comes in. Besides, I’m in a pissy mood, and I want to write about something fun to try to change that.
To coincide with the 6th year anniversary of Undertale’s release, Toby Fox has announced the upcoming release of the second chapter of its…sequel?, Deltarune. And in honour of that very sudden and very sick announcement, I thought I’d do a piece on what many would describe as Toby’s iconic song, Megalovania. It’s had a fair few iterations at this point, so there’s plenty of meat to go through.
This may or may not be just an excuse to talk about Homestuck again. But there will be other things! I promise! Mostly those, actually.
Megalovania first appeared as the final boss theme for Toby’s Earthbound Romhack (back when he still went by Radiation), The Halloween Hack. Considering the works that would follow, THH has kind of been buried in history, and in some ways, that’s for the best. It’s very 2000s edgy, if you catch my drift.
Toby has stated that the original intent was for the final boss music to be Megalomania, from the soundtrack to another SNES JRPG, Live a Live (not to be confused with Kill la Kill), but he couldn’t get it to work for whatever reason. In a way, that’s kind of a shame, because Megalomania is an absolute bop, but I’m not going to act like what we got wasn’t also very good.
youtube
The original version of Megalovania from THH probably sounds kind of basic to those more used to the modern iterations. Do keep in mind that this was designed to be played by a now 26-year-old game on an even older console, and its not like SNES romhacking was easy at the time. Earthbound (and by extension, the Halloween Hack) are in this weird place where the soundtrack definitely still sounds really limited or bitcrushed at times, but some tracks (such as Pokey Means Business!) manage to sound excellent.
Megalovania is somewhere in between, I think. The guitar riff that drives the whole track sounds absolutely gorgeous, which is good, because I think that’s really the key element of the whole thing. The melodies present from other instruments throughout the whole thing vary in quality, both in the subjective sense and the fidelity sense, but without that riff, the song would be nothing. It’s the one truly consistent thing through every single version of Megalovania, it’s the heart of the track, and it’s surprisingly simple for something that sounds so driving and intense.
The context surrounding Megalovania iteration number one is somewhat more awkward to talk about. Like I said, The Halloween Hack is edgy, and I fucking mean it. The story is (after some preamble) a descent into the mind of Dr. Andonuts from the original game, having been driven mad on account of being in a timeline where Ness and friends don’t come back alive from the confrontation with Giygas. After a long metaphysical journey, the main character (who is Varik from Brandish for some reason) confronts Andonuts’s psyche itself as the final boss, who begs for mercy before flipping his lid with, well. I’ll just quote it. Keep in mind this is what you’re reading as Megalovania starts to play:
“I HAVE FUCKING HAD IT WITH YOUR SHIT. you little fuckers are going to have your bodies ripped in half. I’ll shove your asses so far down your throats that when you crap you’ll sing fucking beethoven”
“tl;dr: eat shit, [slur redacted]”
Which if you ask me is a little much. As spooky as the whole romhack is, Andonuts’s dialogue is so utterly over-the-top that it’s hard to take seriously. It’s such a pristine combination of the humour both of the time and of Toby’s likely age at the time. It’s still a fairly impressive piece of work as a whole, but considering where we’re up to, one could call this humble beginnings for Megalovania.
youtube
The track’s next big outing was as part of the Homestuck soundtrack. I’d argue that this is really where Toby got his name out there, seeing as much of his early notoriety came from his huge contributions to the webcomic’s lengthy list of albums, and also the fact that apparently Undertale was in part coded in Hussie’s basement. I don’t remember where I heard that first, but I’ve heard it from multiple sources, so.
This version of the song, styled as MeGaLoVania, starts off with a bit of a statement, with the opening notes being very much on a real shreddy-ass electric guitar, but the body of the song is actually largely the same (if cleaned up and with some different instruments) as THH’s version. Of course, this version does have more going on, as evidenced by a few of the guitar lines carrying on new melodies, as well as continuing in the background behind sections from the original piece. Owing a lot to the increased instrumentation and fidelity, this version of Megalovania is easily the rockiest, especially as the final minute of the track brings in Vriska’s banger of a theme (also composed by Fox) and the drums pick up in intensity.
While Homestuck’s soundtrack is incredibly vast, relatively little of it actually ended up being used in the webcomic itself. MeGaLoVania, of course was used, and it was right during what I’d argue was the comic’s peak in Act 5 Act 2. The animation featuring the song, [S] Wake, is such an incredible pair of oh holy FUCK moments, what with the revival of Aradia and her actually being able to (temporarily (heh)) halt the story’s main threat, and also Vriska just fucking murdering Tavros, no biggie. Looking back at it now, the whole thing feels kind of quaint, the animation style in particular (it was just Like That), but it was such a big deal at the time. It doesn’t hurt that this is easily my favourite version of Megalovania, because I’m a sucker for guitar noodling, and also a sucker for Vriska’s theme.
Homestuck (and MeGaLoVania) was pretty big in the early ‘10s, but at the end of the day, the comic and track were still very niche. And then 2015 rolled around, and Undertale came out, and suddenly it was everywhere.
youtube
As someone who’s known the song since before the game came out, it is somewhat disappointing to have it so strongly associated with Sans. Especially since A. He already has a much more fitting theme, and B. it’s so clearly the theme of that specific fight, and even moreso that of the Genocide player themselves, but fine, whatever. MEGALOVANIA, as it is styled, is very much a more bombastic version of the theme, one with more experience under the belt, and more control behind the context. After all, in this case, Toby didn’t have to wrangle with the limitations of SNES Romhacking or of featuring the track in someone else’s work. The track still has the base elements of a chiptune and chugging guitars, but the different soundfont used helps a lot to elevate the whole track’s intensity. In particular, I think the verses (do they count as verses? I know very little actual music theory, sorry) sound miles better in this iteration than any of the previous, and the snappy percussion is subtle but also great.
There are a lot of things that make the Sans fight so memorable, and MEGALOVANIA is obviously one of them. I imagine many would cite the sheer difficulty as another, but more important than that is the way it plays with expectations. In the Genocide run, you are the most attuned to the game’s combat system, and you’ve spent enough time wailing on Undyne to have expectations about how fighting Sans is going to be. And then he attacks first with an insane hard-to-dodge combo, he gets to dodge attacks, and he gets to force you onto a time limit. It breaks the rules of the game in such a shocking way that it’s hard not to find it memorable. This is not even mentioning the wild lore implications behind the fight’s dialogue, or that such a silly character goes so fuckin hard during a scrap.
Silly is something Sans is, which people seem to forget considering how much of his associated fan material is based around this one fight. Man spends half the game napping and selling hot dogs and telling awful puns. It does bug me a little, but I completely understand the impact of the scene. Despite most players never seeing it, it has to be one of the most iconic facets of the whole thing.
youtube
While hundreds if not thousands of remixes and covers of Megalovania exist at this point, most of them aren’t worth bringing up, because I don’t have infinite time on my hands, and because they’re not official. I do want to quickly bring up Megalo Strike Back, a track Toby made for an Earthbound fan album, because it slaps like hell. It’s clearly got a few of the elements of Megalovania, but the melody is so much more mysterious and eerie, and yet also kinda jaunty. I’m a big fan, and considering how many fan animations and games I’ve heard it in, so are a lot of folks.
youtube
The other version I’d like to bring up is, of course, the version that appeared in Smash Ultimate. Considering Nintendo’s typical policy surrounding fan media, having a track that originates from a SNES Romhack in fucking Smash is both incredible and hilarious.
Musically, however, it’s not that notable. The first minute or so, in fact is basically just the Undertale version with a slightly different mix (as it’s styled MEGALOVANIA, that’s the version being referenced here), though I think some of the later parts are in a slightly different key that sounds pretty interesting. I’m not sure how I feel about the piano section- on the one hand, I’m not really a fan of that instrumentation, on the other, it is very Smash, and the violins that come in are great. And then there’s guitar noodling on the back half! I just noticed that! It’s different from the Homestuck version, though.
And that’s all I have to say about Megalovania, I think. It’s a song with a surprisingly storied history, and one that is unlikely to be forgotten as long as people still remember Undertale, Homestuck, or even the Halloween Hack. And considering at the very least the popularity of the former, that’s going to be a long time away.
…okay two more things, one I think battle against a true hero is better than MEGALOVANIA and two James Roach aka probably the biggest lategame Homestuck composer remixed Megalovania for Pesterquest but it’s reaaaaaally subtle until like 3 minutes in and he called it “yeah, it is” and that’s fucking hilarious okay bye

Favorite BnHA OST Tracks
anon I never thought this day would come. (థ ェ థ)
I fucking adore this OST. and no one has ever asked me about it. which is fine, but I think we all need to just take a moment to acknowledge that the BnHA soundtrack fucking slaps. I’m not just saying that as a fan of the series; I’m saying it as objective fact. it’s up there with Zelda and Game of Thrones and How to Train Your Dragon. this soundtrack deserves all the love. and up till this point I’d resigned myself to loving it quietly, but now you have unlocked pandora’s box so I just hope you’re ready!!
I have... let’s see... six BnHA-related playlists right now lol. out of these, three are composed of tracks from the OST (the other three are my character-inspired playlists. wait, did I say three? actually there’s four of those. so seven in all. good lord). this soundtrack gets a lot of play, you guys. when I like something, I have a tendency to put it on repeat until I’m sick of it. so if I never get sick of it, you can imagine how that ends up going.
I was going to do a top ten of this, but then I went through the playlist and wrote down all my favorites and there were like thirty. I briefly entertained the idea of just saying FUCK IT I’LL JUST POST THEM ALL!!!!, but I had to sit myself down and lecture myself about having some goddamn self control. so I narrowed it down to like... twenty-three. and then finally down to seventeen. soo, it’s a top ten, plus seven honorable mentions. this is the best I can do guys. this is taking everything I’ve got, so please just humor me this once.
I promise this post won’t be super long. I’m not even gonna put it under a cut. I will restrain myself. okay here we go.
10. Bombing King!!
Katsukiiiiii. I couldn’t not put this here, who the hell do you think I am. it’s perfect for him. it’s rowdy (I love how it just crashes in with those opening drums and guitar without so much as a how-do-you-do), but it’s got a real drive to it, and a fucking legit leitmotif that can be cut into sections and remixed in any number of ways (see: number 4). if you want to make it sad you can make it sad. want to make it even more badass, you can definitely do that. it makes me excited because there’s so many ways to play around with it for his future character development.
9. Cavalry Battle
this track makes me want to go out and cause a ruckus. it’s so full of energy and there’s an optimism to it, but like a clever, resourceful optimism. I love when the melody smooths out at around 1:14. it’s like, the team is coming together and we’re gonna kick some ass. they should play this in promos for the Olympics.
8. Nevertheless, Go Beyond
this makes me want to save the world. this one actually gets bonus points for the title because it’s so emotive, and somehow nails the exact feeling that the music manages to convey. even when you can’t go on, go on. you’re a hero. people are depending on you. get up.
7. All For One
ooooooohhhhhh my gooodddddddd. “The Power of All For One” is arguably the creepier track, but this one is more epic. it sends chills down my spine. he’s so fearsome. only the strongest of the strong can hope to defeat him. good vs evillllllll. god the bass in this is so good. and the vocals. and the frenzied urgency of the strings. and the Inception-stype WHOOOOOOOM at the end ugh.
6. Your Power
I almost went with “I Absolutely Won’t Use the Heat (Left)” because it’s so sad and haunting, but in the end this version won out because, as with the All For One track above, it’s the more epic of the two. I really consider them to be two parts of the same track though. anyways, so Todoroki’s motif is hands down the most haunting on the OST. fact. it’s so goddamn tragic?? and this version of it has that resounding drum beat that to me feels like a kind of grim determination. it’s a great track, and perfect for that theatrical Todoroki family drama lol.
5. My Hero Academia
this traccccccck. is so good. it makes me picture someone standing on the edge of a cliff at dawn looking down on the city below. it’s just got this kind of legendary feel to it somehow. this is an “only the beginning of the adventure” type of track. I also associate this with Iida unveiling his Reciproburst during the Sports Festival arc, because it was used so fucking well during that scene. “everyone, there’s less than a minute left... I honestly get chills every time I watch that. it’s like quintessential BnHA.
4. Katsuki and Izuku
guys. I don’t want to throw the word “masterpiece” around all willy-nilly, but this. this, right here, is why I like character motifs so much. because you can play with them and wind them apart and together and bam, just like that you’re telling a fucking story. so anyways, in case you didn’t know, this track combines You Say Run/Jet Set Run (a.k.a. Deku’s themes) with Bombing King!! (a.k.a. Katsuki’s theme). bringing the two of them together through the power of music ffff why am I so weak to this shit. when You Say Run kicks in at around 26 seconds I fucking looooose it. then when Katsuki’s theme first joins in at around 52 seconds I lose it all over again. this is a better arrangement of it than Bombing King tbh. which is perfect, because the whole point of their story is that the two of them make each other better! anyways, they just complement each other so perfectly. IT’S LIKE THIS TRACK IS A METAPHOR FOR SOMETHING YOU GUYS. waiting on the anime to fucking use this in season 4, since it went unused in s3 despite them having all the opportunities in the world smdh. they might actually use it in the upcoming movie, come to think.
3. You Say Run
obviously. what else is there even to say. this is a fucking tour de force. chills every time. I know y’all came here for 2:05, but honestly the whole track is a rush from start to finish. I’m literally not exaggerating when I say that this music taught me the meaning of plus ultra. like on a spiritual level. music is cool. please don’t be mad at me that I only put it at third. if anything, that ought to tell you just how much I love the #1 and #2 tracks.
2. Hero A
I can play this on repeat for hours. not an exaggeration. this has the highest play count of any of my BnHA tracks. I’m not a naturally energetic person. I want to be, but I’m not. but this track is like a fucking life-hack to get you pumped the fuck up. and it’s so catchy, and it makes you feel so good, like you can really do anything. it might not be easy, but you can do it! I actually like the “you can be a hero/you say run” motifs in this track even better than the original tracks tbh. especially when it goes a bit quieter and then builds up again starting from 1:45, and then the percussion kicks in again, and it’s like something out of a Rocky movie. this track makes me fucking believe. it makes me want to try.
and before we go to number one, here are some runner-ups. (by “some” I mean a fuckton more of them but my descriptions are shorter. compromise)
You Can Be a Hero - the track that proved it’s possible to simultaneously make someone feel more inspired than they’ve ever been in their entire life while also causing them to ugly cry
Heroic Fighting Battle Song - why is the season 2 OST so fucking good
Go Seize It! - why is the season 2 OST so fucking good
The Threat of Offense and Defense - this theme makes me want to solve difficult puzzles very dramatically
Battle of Deku - this is just here because of Deku VS Kacchan part 2. I 100% associate it with that fight. it’s a great track, but it wouldn’t quite stand out among all the other tracks if it wasn’t for that. but that fight does exist, so now this track makes me think of rivals throwing down and it’s great
Yoarashi Inasa - specifically the part that starts in at 1:14. it’s like the Naruto and FLCL soundtracks had a really funky baby
People Always Reaching for the Top “the winner of the U.A. sports festival is...” the only reason this track isn’t higher is because I don’t feel like it stands quite as well on its own as some of the other tracks. but with context?? god. I love how this was used at the end of Bakugou VS Todoroki. it was just the perfect cue for that scene. so good.
...bonus runner-ups because I’m a fucking liar and have no self-control at all
From Me to You - this is the one used when Kacchan joins the scooby squad. it’s quiet and sad and hopeful all at once. the perfect theme for something ending and something else beginning
Rampaging Evil - I associate this with Tomura. it’s badass and usually means that some hardcore shit is happening
Predecessor’s Sworn Friend - this track is some straight up Cowboy Bebop shit. badass grandpa gettin to work
okay, without any further ado let’s finish up with number one
1. One for All Vs. All for One
good. versus. evil. this is epic incarnate. how is it so good. I have so many feels about it oh god. it’s so desperate and so determined at the same time. it perfectly conveys this image of one person, almost at their limit, standing alone against something terrible, and somehow reaching deep within themselves to summon the courage to fight. it is beautiful. it is powerful as shit. it may just be the most heroic thing I’ve ever heard.
so that’s my top ten twenty! rest assured, this is still leaving a lot out. like the rest of the entire goddamn soundtrack. god this series fucking spoils us.
#bnha#boku no hero academia#bnha ost#hayashi yuuki#makeste reads bnha#makeste watches bnha#asks#anon asks#long post#btw guys if you dig hayashi yuuki's stuff you should check out kaze ga tsuyoku fuiteriru#a.k.a. run with the wind#a.k.a. kazetsuyo#also because it's just a really good anime#but that soundtrack also slaps#and you will definitely pick up some bnha vibes#also I just realized I completely forgot to answer the other question about my favorite openings and endings#that I have to think about#I don't listen to them as much#but they are all pretty good#bnha meta#bnha ranking

May’s Musical Director’s Commentary
Hey guys! I'm May. You might remember me as "the one who did those nifty chatlogs and the roster page" or "the one who did all the music" or "that one mod who never said anything." Los and Mints agreed to let me write up this "director's commentary" on the music I did for DECK. There's no secret lore tidbits in here or anything, but if you liked my music you might find this an interesting glimpse into the process.
A Note On Sampling
Sampling is the practice of using preexisting audio to make new music. When I talk about what I've sampled here, I'm only going to mention particularly interesting cases. Almost all of the music I've done for DECK features audio from Free Wave Samples, so I figure that's not really worth mentioning except here. It's the other stuff that's interesting. EarthBound was an influence on my decision to pull in a bunch of audio from outside sources. I've always admired that game's use of sampling.
The First Chatlog
The chatlogs have consistently been pretty fun to do. I knew from the start that I didn't want to edit this together by hand, so I wrote a Processing sketch to render the video. It's not the most elegant thing in the world, and adding new features is a massive pain, but it's a lot easier than putting these together any other way. All I have to do is swap out the script and background shader and write a new song and I can just let the program churn away rendering a new video. (Of course, fiddling with the shader until it looks presentable takes so long that it kind of eats into the time savings.)
There's not much to say about this one. The typing sounds were graciously provided by Mints. Those with careful ears might notice the instrument playing the chords in other chatlog songs.
The Second Chatlog
One of the only interesting things about this one: the melody is actually a musical cryptogram! What it spells out is an exercise for the reader. ;) The miscellaneous background sounds are all distorted versions of stuff I recorded myself one day when my film teacher let me wander the halls with a microphone. Film school has its perks.
Rio Hachimitsu's BDA
Doing the first body drop music was pretty intimidating. The body discovery music in Danganronpa has a particular instantly recognizable quality to it. If I wanted to go for that style, I'd have to get it down perfectly. (Otherwise I'd come off as a cheap imitation.) So I decided to be original. After school PSAs would be proud.
The melody here is probably pretty familiar to you all by now. Every BDA has used some variation of this melody because I'm a sucker for leitmotif. The melody itself is a slightly modified version of the Dies Irae. (Yes, I know I'm very pretentious, but being pretentious is fun.) This is also the first instance of what I call the "death rattle." I put that strange scraping sound into every BDA and execution for consistency's sake. You can see it as the moment the soul leaves the deceased's body or the moment the onlookers realize somebody's just died... or something. The really fun part is what it is - it's a bell tree! Yknow, those tinkly whimsical things. It's just been reversed and slowed down and drenched in reverb. It's fun how malleable audio is.
Minnie Minami's EXE
This was fun! Despite being a film student for a while, I've never had to write music to sync up with a video before. (I still haven't - I'm pretty sure the video was edited to match up with the music and not vice versa.) The overall tone of this one was pretty obvious. Of course a ringleader's execution would be accompanied by messed up circus music. Anything else just wouldn't be right. There's not really much else to say about it other than that it includes samples from my toy accordion and slide whistle.
Sampled:
An old recording of Auld Lang Syne
Yasu Kozakura's BDA
The body drop's usage of mirrors really hit me in the art gut, so I figured the BDA jingle should have something to do with mirrors. This is why the melody plays forwards and backwards simultaneously, because mirrors. (Some call that kind of thing a "crab canon.")
My incredibly good and quality cat piano is also in here. A stretched out meow recorded from it forms the basis of the background chord.
NANIKO's EXE
For this one, I gave the video editor three different tracks, one for each "segment" of the execution. I did this as a cop-out because I didn't want to have to try to sync my music up with the video - this way, the editor could mash it all together.
The segment with the mirrors was an exercise in what's called "phase music", where two lines drift out of sync with each other, creating different rhythmic textures over the course of the song. (Piano Phase and Clapping Music, both by Steve Reich, are two classic examples of the form.) For some reason, echoey piano lines phasing in and out of sync feel mirror-y to me. They also form a nice musical callback to the BDA.
Sampled:
Me switching frequencies on the radio
Sayuri Nishi's BDA
Shoutout to Free Wave Samples for having a heartbeat sound. I didn't want to try to make that sound myself with drums.
Kosuke Nakamura's EXE
This execution is significant because it's the first non-video one. Execution art wasn't my department, so I'm not going to speak on how that change affected the artists, but I found it liberating to be able to follow the more general emotional arc of the execution rather than being tethered to the pacing of a video.
When I asked Angela for guidance on where to go musically, we came to the conclusion that the proper genre would be "Tom and Jerry noir." That description alone is why I loved doing music for DECK - where else do you get the opportunity to write something with that as guidance? The most natural interpretation in my view was a song that starts out jazzy and segues into slapstick-esque classical to mirror the transition from the safety of noir to being mauled by a giant robot cat.
Also, the Slack notification sound is in there, since Los suggested a social media notification sound in the background somewhere. (Slack's basically social media for tech dorks, right?)
Sampled:
Slack
Tom and Jerry
The Missing BDAs
Unfortunately, I got preoccupied and neglected to do BDA music for the deaths in Chapter 4. Generally, there's not many interesting things to say about stuff that doesn't exist. The plan was to sample Pomp and Circumstance for Law N... but I didn't. Sorry, Froggy. I didn't have any other plans for this one.
Ukiyo-Maemi's EXE
This one relies so much on sampling it almost makes me feel bad. I got so much mileage out of the clanging percussion and the spooky background sounds that it's basically cheating.
Sampled:
My lovely girlfriend 💕
OFF
Akira Akatsuki's BDA
I was in a very percussion-heavy mood when I wrote this. (Can you tell?) Listening to the FLCL soundtrack had me jonesing for some dramatic cymbals.
Sampled:
Earthbound
Genko Junshu's BDA
Junshu's body was found in the Navigation Station. This called to mind sonar beeps and garbled radio messages and such. This is another one that wouldn't be nearly as interesting without the sampling. Hopefully this is transformative enough to not get me labeled a hack.
Sampled:
Earthbound
Law Kiyuu's EXE
This execution actually freaked me the hell out the first time I read it. Freaked me out for like a week - something about the combination of incredible writing and the subject matter. It honestly felt calculated to scare me specifically.
Anyway, I had a lot of fun with this one. I wanted to write something as unsettling as the execution it was accompanying. The intro is supposed to represent Law thinking he's already dead. Next comes his terror (evoked with the hilariously dissonant Altered scale), and then the final spooky arrhythmic section is supposed to be him being cut apart. (Note that part of the music drifts out of sync with itself to represent Law, uh, going to pieces.) The return of the piano is supposed to evoke the flashback section. That kind of piano sound always sounds spooky and/or sentimental to me.
Not much else to say now that I've dissected (heh) basically all of the decisions I've made for this one. I'm really proud of Law's execution song - it might be my favorite out of all the ones I've done for DECK.
Sampled:
Earthbound
Persona 2: Innocent Sin
The Doug Theme
Death Note
"It's a Long Way to Tipperary"
gamer butt song
Frogbot's EXE
The original plan for this one was start this one off with a hocket-y medley of all the previous body drops and executions. However, it would have been really tedious to export then import all the relevant instruments, so I didn't do that. Instead I remixed the typical BDA theme. It's supposed to convey the shift from FrogBot's reign of despair to the triumph of getting them executed. I realized part of the way through that this segment was far too triumphant given how many people died and the fact that the submarine is about to explode, so then I just ended it by lingering on a diminished chord. I'm not a very subtle person. Frogbot's execution lacks the death rattle 'cause there's no horrifying realization that one of your classmates is dead. (Exercise for the reader: find where I hid the Flintstones theme in this song. Good luck.)
Conclusion
DECK was a lot of fun to work on. I wrote some extremely messy code, made some sick as hell videos, and wrote some pretty baller music. I got to see some wonderful artists do their work, and I got to skim some pretty intense roleplaying. Thank you to everyone who said nice things about my music and to the mods for being really cool dudes. Special thanks to Mints and Los for letting me put this long-winded rant on their blog, and thank you for reading this whole thing.
See you on the flip side, y'all.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 30/07/2022 (Central Cee’s "Doja”, Billie Eilish)
How can the UK be LF SYSTEM-phobic? “Afraid to Feel” is at #1 for a fourth week. Welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS!
Rundown
Now, hopefully, this will be a quick one. There’s no “Off the Charts” section this week because there’s not much coming out this week so I figured I’d give myself the leeway with the massive stack of releases I have to cover from last week and during this next month. There’s also not THAT much going on in the charts this week, it’s like a mess of other, separate medium-sized stories rather than one or two big stories so I think I can go by my arbitrary RTC dictionary and declare this a “slow week”. With that aside, let’s start as we always do with the notable drop-outs. These are songs exiting the UK Top 75 – which is what I cover – after five weeks in the region or a peak in the top 40, and we do have a handful this week: “Flowers” by Lauren Spencer-Smith, “Happier Than Ever” by Billie Eilish, “she’s all i wanna be” by Tate McRae (I sense a theme there) and finally, “One Kiss” by Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa.
Our one returning entry is “Wet Dream” by Wet Leg, but in terms of notable gains, we have “Words” by Alesso featuring Zara Larsson at #62 off of the debut, “Dandelions” by Ruth B. going nowhere at #60, “Big City Life” by Luude and Mattafix at #37, “SNAP” by Rosa Linn granting her the first top 40 hit of her career at #26, “Stay with Me” by Calvin Harris, Justin Timberlake, Halsey and Pharrell Williams (in some order) at #22, “Bad Habit” by Steve Lacy at #18 and that’s actually pretty much it. I should probably note that “Seventeen Going Under” by Sam Fender is down from #16 last week to #17, meaning that it is indeed 17 going under, but other than that, it really was kind of a cool week.
The top five this week consists of “Last Last” by Burna Boy at #5, “Green Green Grass” by George Ezra at #4, “As it Was” by Harry Styles at #3, “Doja” by Central Cee at #2 (we’ll get to that mess later) and of course, “Afraid to Feel” at the very top.
NEW ARRIVALS
#75 – “KU LO SA” (A COLORS SHOW) – Oxlade
Produced by ???
Now this is interesting. As far as I know, “KU LO SA” as an official recording has not actually been released, but a semi-live performance in the form of “A COLORS SHOW” – a live performance series on YouTube specialising in hip-hop and R&B, who have had artists on such as JPEGMAFIA, Rico Nasty, Doja Cat and Unknown T – has actually charted before the official release. Oxlade is a Nigerian singer and this is pretty much your typical Afrobeats single, with a slick acoustic guitar, sandy tropical percussion and a slightly weedy performance from Oxlade here, who doesn’t fit well into an odd mix that’s likely a result of the live performance setting. Oxlade delivers a pretty simple song about wanting to be closer with a recently-distanced relationship and whilst the lovey-dovey content isn’t particularly gripping, it’s delivered with as much conviction in its falsetto, and I can’t say it’s not a bad, tropical foundation for him to do so. I can see this getting on peoples’ nerves due to his performance alone, but the amount of Auto-Tuned layers kind of make his convicted love a bit more compelling than it would be if taken all that straight so I appreciate this as is. I wonder how the official release will end up sounding – it’s very possible that the label has purposefully planted this performance to gain some kind of feedback on the song, but if the “COLORS SHOW” performance is doing well, you might as well release it now.
#63 – “Under the Influence” – Chris Brown
Produced by Kiddominant
It’s that time again... Piran, Dillon and Jade suggested that instead of me wasting my time with this hack, I listen to “Something About Your Love” by SG Lewis instead. English dance producer SG Lewis has never interested me, especially not after his snoozefest that was a debut album, Times, which had some decent cuts but ultimately kind of grooveless and disposable. It’s safe to say I didn’t exactly come in with high expectations, so I was kind of taken aback by how much I liked this, thanks mostly to that incessant riff that pretty much chugs throughout the whole song, initially starting with as many filters as possible in typical French house fashion before crashing into that hypnotic four-on-the-floor beat. I could do without the vocals from SG Lewis, as he’s no Romanthony, who sounds about as void of personality as possible, whining over the instrumental which really could have survived on its own. That’s actually the opposite to the problem I had with Times so at least he’s finding new ways to squander talent. The little intricacies in this track, like all the drizzling synth cascades, are pretty effective in creating this semi-obnoxiously lovestruck tone... but whilst that might be the most euphoric feeling at that moment, it does start to drag and you’ll look back at it remembering how annoying you were. That’s kind of the vibe I get from this song: it’s decent, definitely well-made and I like it in comparison to what else I have heard from him, but I’m not really grasped by it entirely and I don’t see this five-minute track growing on me given that.
#49 – “Fantasy” – D-Block Europe
Produced by ???
Guys, is it that hard to credit your producer? They don’t even have their tag on here, for God’s sake. Either way... this is not what I expected. When I see a new song from DBE, I fully expect a badly-mixed trap beat, humorous yet weedy singing from Young Adz and a worryingly substance-dependent ramble from Dirtbike LB... not a slice of tropical-house influenced Afrobeats that... kind of works for me? Sure, that lead mess of a loop is kind of scratchy in the intro, but it’s soon drowned out by the basic pianos and the predictable groove that for whatever reason just clicks, especially with how Young Adz barely cares about being on beat when crooning. It’s also just a straight-up love song, as Mr. Adz harmonises with himself about the fantasies he has wanting to live with this woman, and to be fair to him, it’s not just pointless platitudes. He gives out the kind of detail that I like in these kinds of songs: the mundane and the routine, which contrasted with how beautiful he finds her kind of create the sense that it’s only him that finds her THAT beautiful, and she’s not just some model that he would complement on any other song. That chorus is really way too infectious for its own good, and I kind of love the watery drop as the keys twinkle over Adz. Dirtbike LB is here too, I guess, with a verse that splits the difference between cute and condescending like he’s Drake or something, but he doesn’t detract from the song so... yeah, I’m actually pretty happy with this, and I think that this out-of-genre experiment might just pay them off in the long run. I hope it sticks around.
#47 – “Are You Entertained” – Russ featuring Ed Sheeran
Produced by Fred again..
The attempts by Russ to cross the mainstream in the past few years have just been kind of funny to me, but with “BEST ON EARTH” and “Handsomer” he’s actually been mildly successful, so him bringing on Ed Sheeran is just another laugh to add to the pile of mid-level pop-rap that goes directly against Russ’ more pretentiously independent persona that I think he left behind in the late 2010s, for good reason. You know, I actually like Russ’ debut onto the UK charts a decent amount too. The song is pretty much just them flexing, with both men rapping about how they made sure to get their friends with them as they became famous. Sure, the Russell Crowe sample is kind of on-the-nose, and this kind of song has always felt defensive, but the drill-adjacent trap beat goes pretty hard with the warping 808s and skittering percussion. I do think that Russ’ flow was good in the first verse before he meanders into the melodic nonsense, and that really, he’s second in everything here to Ed Sheeran. People forget that Ed can actually rap, and whilst the subject matter isn’t anything to write home about, he flows with way more conviction and hunger than the actual rapper here, and the backing harmonies Ed has mastered as of recent are present both in his verse and the chorus which actually trades off between the two. It’s nothing all that unique, but it’s a decent enough pop-rap single, and considering that I had practically nothing good to say about Russ beforehand, consider that a compliment.
#33 – “The 30th” – Billie Eilish
Produced by FINNEAS
Billie Eilish released a two-song EP of sorts called Guitar Songs with primarily acoustic tracks that debuted in reverse order this week on the charts. The first one we have is “The 30th”, a song that details – or rather, cryptically refuses detail – an event that happened on November 30, hence the name, which is believed to refer to a car crash in LA. The song is actually pretty devastating as a result, with Eilish’s signature borderline whisper feeling more enunciated than ever as she coos about talking to someone who was hospitalised, with the uncertainty of everything that could have happened to lead to a different result wherein the victim may have not survived serving as much of the thesis for the track. The little observational details perfectly capture that frenzied mind state that one would have in an uncertain, potentially dangerous situation like this. All of those “what-ifs” develop in the bridge and make that final chorus shattering, but kind of reassuring in that the fears were ultimately just “what-ifs”, with that orchestral tension in the bridge accompanied by Eilish’s rapid questioning and the industrial bleeps curating a truly resonant moment before the acoustic guitars come back in, sounding exhausted. Eilish’s falsetto is higher and less controlled, but it’s that out-of-breath relief that makes the song hit as hard as it does. Is the other one just as good?
#23 – “TV” – Billie Eilish
Produced by FINNEAS
The answer is no. Sorry, this one might be the more conventional but is just less resonant to me, mostly because of how lacking in specifics it feels in comparison to its B-side. “TV” captures a certain sense of doom that many a young person feels right now, with the common thread being having to “leave your friends behind” because Eilish is “in love”, though I really think that’s the surface level here, as the theme of love is – at least how I see it – probably a metaphor for being generally enraptured too deep into other emotional commitments that you’re unable to actually manage your relationships with others. It makes sense given the content which I understand is topical but is basically a listicle, with some of the pop culture references feeling a bit tired and thrown in (though it’s likely they’ll be considered profound in retrospect). The folksier tone of this one doesn’t really get me as much as the other track, and this is definitely still a decent song, well-recorded and with a great performance from Eilish, but it’s a tougher sell, especially with the crowd recording that will never not feel tacky on a song like this that tries to tap into that sense of universal dread, and it’s especially odd for a song that really feels like it’s not saying much about the cultural references it wants to tie in.
#2 – “Doja” – Central Cee
Produced by LiTek and WhYJay
Do I even have to dignify this one with a review? I mean, come on, it’s a glorified shitpost by an artist who has established his credibility well enough to make it seem like this is just... something he can do, gleefully, with no concern for how it’ll be received because he has the money for a Lyrical Lemonade video and the “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” so it’ll be a worldwide hit regardless. Okay, to get some formalities out of the way, Eve’s original track featuring Gwen Stefani, which is slick and confident as hell, peaked at #4 back in 2001 when it was released, meaning that with just one week, Cee has overtaken the classic with a pretty lazy sample flip. To be fair to his producers, the sped-up loop doesn’t sound awful, and the subtle synth and vocal inflections they add are pretty decent-sounding, but there are two reasons why anyone cares about this. One is the sample being placed under a stiff UK drill beat, and the second is the main reason: whatever Central Cee is saying. This isn’t the first song this year about wanting to have sex with Doja Cat, considering that $NOT and A$AP Rocky did it a couple months ago with a song that’s just as bad – maybe these kinds of songs are always weird, gross and half-assed, who would have thought? The only logical conclusion from Central Cee’s bizarrely defensive chorus is that he’s hiding something, which is the exact opposite of what he was trying to get at here – ignoring the fact that lesbian fetishism and weapon-related wordplay has been used for years in hip hop when it comes to gay punchlines. Through the singular verse in this song that’s less than two minutes, he tops everything off with this sense of paranoia about his status as a “respected figure” which honestly is just embarrassing. I’m not offended by this – it’d be ridiculous to fall into that trap – but I feel like I can’t respond to this with anything but a sigh. It’s a tired shitpost by a rapper who doesn’t care. The fact that it could have hit #1 incriminates the public more than it does the person who created the art in the first place. At least Eve’s getting a cheque out of this.
Conclusion
Worst of the Week should be obvious, right? Central Cee gets that for “Doja”, but I don’t have a Dishonourable Mention here. Instead, we can have a tied Honourable Mention for both “Fantasy” by D-Block Europe and “Are You Entertained” by Russ and Ed Sheeran, with Best of the Week going to – apologies for the predictability – Billie Eilish for “The 30th”. Next week, we’ll see what Beyoncé has to say. Thank you for reading and I’ll see you then!

‘Tapdance at Knuckle Junction’
Three members of Beacon Academy's Team CRRM found seats close to the arena floor. Their gargantuan teammate, Rhett Aquilon, had reached the Singles round of the tournament and could be squared up to fight any time. His partner Maize Demetra could hardly wait.
Seeing Rhett fight solo was always a treat. She wondered what poor soul would be cursing the day they were born. Her brown eyes were glued to the screen as the faces shuffled for the selection.
Her dude was up; the scrolling image on the left stopped on Rhett's face. The fox faunus cheered loudly, her sandy blonde hair bouncing as she hopped in place.
"Hey, little foxy!" Maize heard Yang say. "So who do you think your boy will be fighting?" Yang asked her as the image for Rhett's opposition began spinning.
"Whoever it is will regret ever signing up for this tournament! The biggest guy in Beacon is no one with whom to be trifled." Maize's teammate, the scruffy Rusty Holt, answered. He looked like he walked straight out of a Western movie: a dark brown vest over a white button-up, a gun belt over his denim pants, and a cowboy hat and boots, his two pistols holstered at his waist. He even sported a red bandana around his neck.
"You sure, Rusty? He's strong, but there are some contenders still in the game!" Crystal Brooke, the leader of Team CRRM, asked him. She had bright hair as blue as the sky and icy blue eyes to match. Her weapon, an axe-shaped guitar named Grimm Edge, rested on her back. "That huge dude from Haven with the axes, the musclebound chick from Vacuo. And Pyrrha, even though he probably won't be fighting a Beacon student."
"Oh please, the Frozen Bear Bullet will demolish anyone in his path!" Maize cheered again, her fox ears wiggling excitedly.
The spinning wheel of faces slowed, the crowd going quiet in anticipation. It stopped on the face of Haven Academy's Zwei Silverstein.
"You guys still sure of the Polar Bear Boy?" A reptilian faunus with bright green scales asked them. Ariah Mikari grinned at the sight of her boyfriend's face on the screen. "His team demolished mine, and Team ARTC is just as tough as CRRM."
"Most of the reason for that was Team MZKL got a forest and Indigo made all the plants do his bidding! The only ones Zwei fought were you and Ragnar!" Maize snapped. Her brother would smash this human's face to pieces.
"You might remember Bakudan defeating Indigo and rushing Zwei alongside Miss Oktober. He took them both down easily enough. Bianca took out Lorelei but then Katrina blew her out of the stadium. Then in their Doubles match, he eradicated Flik Jewell with no problem while Tree fought off her cousin." Ariah reminded them. The fox girl rolled her eyes.
"Will Zwei Silverstein of Haven's Team MZKL and Rhett Aquilon of Beacon's Team CRRM please report to the arena stage!" Dr. Oobleck called over the PA. A silver blur raced out of an entryway onto the stage, and Zwei was standing there in wait.
An icy chill fell over the stadium as Rhett Aquilon, Beacon's biggest and baddest boy, made the scene.
"Rhett! I finally get to square up with the strongest fight Beacon has to offer!" Zwei bowed respectfully before the walking freezer. Rhett nodded.
"I hear you've got the top marks at Haven, and it's not hard to see why. You pretty much carried your team in that first match!" Zwei's eyes narrowed at Rhett's remark.
"They held their own. Lorelei was tricked by Bianca Tenerife's spells, and Indigo was just plain careless. He thought his trees would defend him well enough, but Cambria Bakudan made the whole forest go 'BOOM!'" He replied.
The bear faunus that was Rhett Aquilon was positively gigantic. He wore short and spiny white hair, and two small white bear ears rested atop his head. He seemed to not be wearing his armor today, though he could deploy the suit at any time. He looked almost like a bear Mecha when he wore his full armor suit.
Cryo and Rime, his enormous gauntlets, rested on his ginormous hands. The intricate gauntlets had spiked knuckles and wrists but otherwise looked cybernetic. Zwei knew to steer clear of the monolithic bear boy's freezing punches, lest he should wind up a block of ice. He'd made sure to pack Hiei and Kurama with custom Dust cartridges in case he needed an extra boost.
Rhett deployed his armor, the blue, white and black plates appearing from nowhere. "DUDE! YOU HAVE THE COOLEST ARMOR!!! IT MAKES YOU LOOK LIKE ESCAFLOWNE!" Zwei spazzed at the sight of the fully armored Rhett.
"Like who?" Rhett replied. Zwei grinned.
"It's a mech from an anime."
"A mech? Like a Gundam?"
"The same idea, but vastly different. Escaflowne was like a knight's armor came to life or something. That show's technology was more retro-futuristic than most mecha shows."
"Hmm, I'll have to check it out. Is it as heart-wrenching as Evangelion?" Rhett could hardly believe he and his foe were nerding out in front of all of Remnant. "Nah, it's more of a romance than a nightmare..." Zwei grinned, Rhett laughing back.
"If the gentlemen on the battlefield are ready... although I would love to hear more about these mecha shows you're both talking about later... BEGIN!!" Dr. Oobleck announced. His inner nerd was showing proudly today, it seemed.
Rhett and Zwei came out swinging. Zwei was impressed that Rhett could move as fast as he did with such heavy armor. He was not as fast as Zwei, though. The silver-haired boy hopped around Rhett in circles, hacking away with his two throwing axes.
Rhett wasn't putting up with that. He activated his Semblance to freeze the air around him. Ice shards formed on Zwei's body, and he knew it was time to make some space between them. He yelled out, his Semblance amplifying the sound his voice and casting a barrier around him. He used the opportunity to hop away from Rhett.
All six feet and four inches of Zwei were now blistering cold. He used Hiei to conjure some fire to melt the ice on his uniform. He then thrust Hiei and Kurama together, the two axes taking the shape of what looked to be a rocket launcher. He shot a blast of fire Dust at the frozen bear man.
Rhett's icy Semblance sucked the heat out of the fire until it dissipated. It never even got close...
The blades of Zwei's axes came together and shot off at Rhett, surrounded by a ball of fire. This time when the fire fizzled out, the blades hit Rhett's armor. The suit disappeared. Zwei must have hit the switch.
"HEY! Don't show my body without my permission!" Rhett snapped. Zwei apologized.
"I feel like more people should see your body, though. It's pretty impressive. You're super jacked!" Zwei complimented. Rhett blushed.
"Not right now, though, I's got a fight to win!" The bear boy exclaimed as his armor returned. He charged at Zwei, seven feet and two inches of large and imposing bear man. Zwei rolled out of Rhett's way to avoid being crushed.
The two of them traded punches, Zwei shielding his fists with sound. It wasn't the best defense against Cryo and Rime and the onslaught of ice, but it kept him from being frozen solid. Zwei produced his yo-yo, a trick he normally wouldn't use, and thrust it forward. The yo-yo punched holes in Rhett's icy aura shield, and Zwei hacked his way through the opening he'd made with his axes.
Him getting that close to Rhett caught the bear boy off-guard, and Zwei's punch threw him off his balance. The enormous boy fell over, but he rolled and caught his footing.
"Did you get that from Ariah?" She uses yo-yos sometimes!"
"Her uncle gave me this, but he taught both of us the yo-yo fighting techniques! Little Rinku is a genius!" Zwei answered, winking at his girlfriend in the crowd. The reptile girl blushed brightly. "Alright, Rhett. Time for jams!"
"Like tunes or like noms?"
"The former. Why would I bring eats to a sanctioned tournament fight? I mean, I know a girl whose Semblance involves eating, but I don't think she even signed up for the tournament!"
"Do you see how large I am? I always pack eats with me. Speaking of which..." Rhett dug into a pocket on his armor and produced a sandwich, devouring it in a quick bite so the ice wouldn't freeze it. "MMM! MAIZE, THIS IS TASTY! THANK YOU! YOU'RE MY NEW FAVORITE!!"
"Oh hush, Rhett! You're making her blush! Besides, she's your favortie already, isn't she?" Crystal answered him, their foxy teammate too stunned to speak.
"I ought to shoot you for that, Brain Freeze! We all know I make the best sandwiches in Vale!" Rusty fired off, Crystal rolling her eyes.
A tune started playing, and Rhett noticed Zwei had produced his cello. This tune was a bop. It sounded almost like a shanty.
"Hey, that's pretty good!" Rhett told him, dancing to the tune.
"Thanks!" Zwei replied. He put Genkai away, but the music continued. He produced his guitar. "Genkai makes for a nice rhythm, but Ototo here really makes the tunes!" Zwei played his tune on his new instrument, layering the music with his Semblance. He even clapped and used mouth noises to make a percussive section.
"Dude, you're totally a music machine!" Rhett cheered, still dancing.
"Yep, Ariah's folks used to call me Jukebox! Also, you do know this is building up to an attack, right?" Zwei asked. He had never had someone dance to his music in the heat of battle before, so he wanted to make certain.
"Of course! I've already got a counterattack strategy! You've got a hot beat going, and I feel like dancing! I'll be ready, trust me!" Rhett answered with a grin. "HEY EVERYONE! YOU GUYS SHOULD DANCE, TOO!!" He yelled into the crowd, his thick baritone carrying over Zwei's music.
The audience caught the beat when the tune looped around. The rest of Team CRRM as well as Teams RWBY and CFVY danced around. Team SSSN joined in, even though Neptune looked ridiculous. Even Team JNPR paired off to dance.
"I think the song might be finished, my dude!" Zwei finally announced. Rhett nodded, finishing his dance and readying himself. His body surged with icy aura as Zwei increased his song's volume to painful levels. Rhett fired icicles at his foe as Zwei launched his decibels at Rhett. He fired all of his ice at once.
The blast knocked the two of them to the edge of the ring. They both tiredly hopped up. Rhett retracted his armor and gauntlets. The meters on the screen showed that their auras were low, but they had enough to keep fighting.
"So, shall we just have a fisticuff, then?" Zwei proposed. Rhett nodded, and the two ran at each other. They threw punches and kicks back and forth, evenly matched without their Semblances. Rhett caught one of Zwei's punches in his hand, uppercutting him in that brief opening.
Zwei took that hit hard, falling to the floor after being launched into the air by Rhett's monstrous mitt. He got up to one knee, breathing heavily. He shot at Rhett with an ax in hand, Rhett blocking with Cryo. It was Hiei and Kurama versus Cryo and Rime now.
The both of them swung ferociously, Zwei hacking with his axes and Rhett blocking and punching with his gauntlets. The side of Kurama slapped into Rhett's face, and Zwei tackled him with all his strength. Rhett fell back, but he rolled over and got back to his feet.
"These two just won't quit!" Professor Port mentioned over the PA.
"I knew this would be an incredible bout! These two are ruthlessly strong!" Dr. Oobleck returned. The two enormous boys continued trading blows, the battle finally culminating in a trade of face punches that knocked the both of them out.
"It looks like this match is a draw! Well met, gentlemen!" Professor Port announced. Rhett and Zwei shook hands when they finally stood back up.
"That was the best fight I've had in ages, Zwei!" Rhett complimented. Zwei grinned at the massive bear man.
"Without question, that was the best fight I've EVER had!" Zwei returned. "Hey, would you and your team be down to hang out later? I don't think Team MZKL will be up to anything."
"I'll ask everyone, but I'm pretty sure they'll be down with that," Rhett answered. He and Zwei departed the arena's stage and found their teammates. Zwei kissed his favorite reptile on the lips as she congratulated him.

Day 11: RWBY OC
Rhett Aquilon belongs to @shadowsoldier-rwby. The rest of Team CRRM (pronounced ‘Chrome’) belong to @kimiheartblade. All other OCs mentioned belong to me, ZweI the Penguin With a Pen.
I’ve wanted to write a tournament match between Rhett and Zwei for ages now, but I think I was saving it for part of a bigger story. Oh well.
Team MZKL (’Musical’) consists of Indigo Montoya, Zwei Silverstein, Katrina Windstorm and Lorelei Sienna. They are second year students at Haven at the time of the Vytal Festival tournament.
Team ATRC (Arctic) is made up of Ariah Mikari, Bianca Tenerife, Ragnar Oktober and Cambria Bakudan. They are first years at Beacon.
Team JSMN is Flik Jewell, Serianna Steele, Mangorita Windstorm, and Nekocase Viridian. I think I listed them as Beacon students, also first years.
Zwei and Lorelei are my favorite of my OCs, and Zwei has a bit of an affection for Rhett. Zwei has an interesting attraction formula, as his initial attraction to someone is directly proportional to how much he wants to fight them. I headcanon him being rendered completely catatonic at the first sight of Yang.
He is devoted to Ariah Mikari, though, and would never stray, as she could easily end his life.
This might be the biggest one-shot I’ve ever written, and I’m proud of it. I hope Aiden and Crystal enjoy it as well.

Tales Of Murder And Dust: Fragile Absolutes. We Feature, We Love.
https://open.spotify.com/album/6DMVg3nHhAadARNNw1dfpl?si=iuFBfCgKQhGEiYq-M2alqw

Århus based, Tales Of Murder And Dust are freshly out with their 3rd full-length LP, Fragile Absolutes. It’s the result of a long gestation and steady evolution of both the line-up and context of the group.
“It’s been the most difficult process we’ve ever had” is bandied around like a mantra in the organization. Why though? Tomad seems to have at times in their 12-year career, everything going for them in spades, but if you pull up specific moments of dormancy – a heck of a lot of forces working against them. Like plate tectonics or glacial migration – slow building pressures ripping them apart that the human sensory array could only detect with seemingly topographic charts.

After 2016’s “The Flow In Between” saw the band signing to English neo-psych magnate, Fuzzclub Records, they parted ways with founding member Kristoffer Vilsgaard, who shared lead vocal and songwriting duties with Christian Sinding Soendergaard. Vilsgaard left the operation amicably and still remains active in their now extensive ‘extended family’. Around the same time, TOMAD saw a drastic line-up shift in virtually every position except drums. Fellow ZRN (formerly Zeroine, a ‘side’ collab between Ess Beck and Soendergaard) and real-life partner, Ess Beck moved in on keys and auxiliary guitar, Rasmus Aaen Jensen entered on bass, and the slimmer, leaner line-up headed to USA for their very chaotic inaugural tour – plagued by missed connections, transportation break-downs and hellish drive times.
“It was our first time in the states, and instead of being able to soak it all in, we got into a van and drove 35 hours straight to a gig” remarks Jakob Korsgaard (drums). “I kinda feel like it doesn’t even count, that tour – it was just so chaotic at times”.
The Flow In Between sold well internationally for them, and the EU bookings were steady, yet it seemed always to this writer that it was getting increasingly difficult to see them here in Aarhus or let-alone find their records in one of the many physical shops. In fact, I ordered my copy of “Fuzz Club Sessions” from England (the 2018 Ltd edition live-in-studio EP, first to feature the re-vamped TOMAD line-up), and it took weeks to get here (You can fly direct from AAR to Stanstead though for less than the price of a beer and be wheels down in 1.5 hours). Something was rotten somewhere.
The difference between The Flow In Between and Fragile Absolutes is significant in almost every way. All plusses though if you’ve gotten this far. WHEN one was able to catch TOMAD in this constellation between records, I always had the feeling there was something über-special about their sound. It was like something was gestating, brewing…fermenting even. ZRN seemingly would cycle through a period as well, ESS and Christian seemed to dichotomize the sound picture. TOMAD at times would be more punky or gothic, while ZRN would move into territory that was more ambient, improvisatory and even post-modernist ‘classical’. It seemed like the two groups had a significant impact on each other – which makes sense with the personnel being partly the same, but yet able to morph under a different moniker and (for lack of a better term) ‘power dynamic shift’. At any rate – TOMAD was evolving and peeling away from the “Psych” or “Shoegaze” pigeonholes that seemed to be applied by the lesser astute of my colleagues over the decade.
With the departure Of Vilsgaard as co-lead, That left Soendergaard in full creative control of the group. This is one of the important dynamic shifts that lead to the content and feel of “Fragile Absolutes”. Far from being a 3-legged cat however – Soendergaards growth as an atmospheric composer and arranger in a more widescreen cinematic format was amplified. With the departure of Vilsgaard, also left the final leanings of TOMAD being justifiably a “Psych” outfit. The darker hues of something weightier and more substantial began covering the band like strangler vines around the once verdant trees of the woods.
“Fragile Absolutes” was recorded in several different locations – initial basic tracking began a few years ago in Aarhus’s Tapetown studios. Tapetown’s penchant for recording “Alternative” and “Indie” genres served as a template for a slightly more bombastic base coat to several of the numbers. For whatever reason, TOMAD decided to complete the recording in various settings where they could hack away at it. A cabin on the west coast of Jutland is mentioned (the closest thing Denmark has to an artic desert), and various bits and pieces here and there. I’m sure all of this adds to the mystery surrounding the record, but the end result and finished ‘product’ is a record that is produced by the band with an air of achieving perfection in whatever it is they first set out to do.
Knowing the genesis and long gestation of the record – I see this as a re-birth for the band. They might not notice it. A heap of things in the band’s own personal life have also necessitated the change. Some members became parents themselves, geographical and logistical strife caused periods of inactivity and even as I write, a global pandemic has altered the way the band has to plan live bookings. I hate to say something as pedestrian as: “you gotta roll with the punches”, but this record existing at all, let alone being the masterpiece that I truly deem it to be, is no small feat.

The Review
In my 2016 review of “The Flow In Between” I ended up calling it “Probably the greatest record to come out of Jutland”. Before we get going on the breakdown – I’ll have to amend that bold statement from 4 years ago and relegate “TFIB” to “Probably the best record to come out of Jutland as of 2015”. Fragile Absolutes has frogged its way into #1 for me. Shucks – I’m even going to have to one-up myself here. It’s my favorite Danish album, ever. There’s a LOT of great albums out of my adopted home country too. Laban 4 comes to mind….
“Fragile Absolutes” kicks off with the wallop of the monastic meets Viking cinema “Distances”. It’s evident that they are picking up in context where some of “The Flow In Between” leaves off (see: “Sisters”). There’s a heavier texture of orchestration underneath which basically weaves it way through the record. There are shimmering jangly bits layered with piano, synths and whatever the hell else they used bathed in subtle sustained feedback. This continues into the slightly dirgy title track “Fragile Absolutes”. The monotonic guitar lines giving way to almost plainsong layered choirs underpinned by some subtle tinkling on the ivories and a chugging and building rhythm section that leads into orchestral stabs at a climax and finally a resolution.
“Crippled Figurines” treads on more familiar territory in a sense. The Percussion is sidelined, instead being inferred by a gently strummed acoustic guitar set in counterpoint by the ever- present drone and simple right-handed synth melody, comfortingly recalling something that wouldn’t be out of place on a late 80s Depeche Mode album. All this mood is closer in reality to say, an early Fever Ray track rather than a gothic synth-pop piece and retaining the best integral bits of each.
With “Flawed Beliefs” we’re back to the structure of the opening gambit of the record – the ever-present drone met by delicate flights of neatly layered butterfly kisses from unidentified hands. “Flawed Beliefs” builds again upon a simple but effective passage, subtly and organically changing shape to a cacophony of doom until disappearing.
“Wear Your Skin” again pairs the dulcet tones of fluttering sprinkles of what sounds like hammer dulcimer with a tightly layered cauldron of foreboding flares in the lower register. You wouldn’t be wrong for hearing traces of Cocteau Twins or even “Pornography”-era Cure, hence why some folks can’t resist attaching a “Goth” accreditation to TOMAD on this album cycle. I’m not sure Goth is such a dirty word anymore – I’ve dabbled myself and in these Isolation times – I don’t think anyone should blame me. “Deconstructed and Dissolved” follows this mood perfectly, plunging the listener further down the k-hole of the world in flames while simultaneously being frozen in the wasteland that our collective esoterism has created.
“Entropy” and “Consoling Words” again bring us back to the now familiar overall vibe of the record. Infinite layers of aurally pleasing yet disturbing symphonic drones paired with a slowly plodding and ever-present funeral march of backbone.
You’d be forgiven for being lulled into a sense of not knowing where the album begins or ends at this point in the record – but the whole affair is masterfully shuttered with the somewhat surprisingly delicate and bare “Remnants” – where for the first time, a simple piano and vocal are to the fore of the mix. There is something heartbreakingly haunting about Soendergaard’s vocals on the closing number – finally pushed into the theoretical spotlight, yet still fragile and nearly incomprehensible. It’s a perfect ending to the constant wash of dark matter and symphonic pummeling of the previous 8 tracks.
“Fragile Absolutes” as a whole, is damaging in its epic-ness. I know “epic” is thrown around a lot in somewhat ironic terms by suited frat boys on TV, but I honestly can’t think of another term for what this LP puts you through. From the invocational wallop of the opening numbers and the adagios and lulls of the moodier tracks, it’s quite an emotional roller coaster. Everyone I know who has heard any of these tracks all drop references to “Soundtrack”, “Nordic” and “Dark”. I’m happy to agree, even if I can’t offer up a pigeonhole of a mini-sub sub- genre to attach to it. The remnants of Shoegaze and Neo-Psych are still evident, these are the kind of bands that TOMAD will always be billed with – but “Fragile Absolutes” is their most powerful and complete work to date. While the bulk of the writing may be Christian Soendergaard’s singular vision now, What the rest of the band add to the mix is staggeringly appropriate and serve the material with a reverence and aplomb that is rarely found in a band that have been through this massive of a personnel shift since their last record. My only wish on several of the songs is that there were more dynamic builds and decrescendos – adding to the romantic and cinematic appeal of some of the “louder” cuts on the LP. This only means that it can evolve and grow live in my book – and for my dollar, I can’t wait to see what TOMAD can do in full flight with this material and line-up at a proper concert whenever that is possible. That will have to occur in 2021 though. Thanks Corona virus.

Anti-Crust | EP Review

Emerging from the caustic sizzle of Beelzebub’s oven, “Anti-Crust” are Cardiff’s own Satanic Pizza Themed Sludge-Punk band. Currently trapped within the stove of the damned and drip feeding their new musical output to us unsuspecting sinners, one slice at a time. Due to the current pandemic that is sweeping the entire globe, this demonically deranged 4-piece have released some of their debut material a little earlier than excepted with their new EP entitled “The Corvid-19 EP”. Sit tight the unconverted, as you are in for one hell of an audible attack!
The EP begins with the bellows of I’LL SWALLOW YOUR SOUL straight out of Evil Dead II, just to set the tone before the music has even started! We are soon met with a full-frontal assault of Hardcore Metal-Punk for their song “Satan Is Waiting”, featuring precise vocal squealing, with machine gun-like delivery. After being hit by a wall of noise we get an instantly catchy chorus telling us about the lake of fire consuming our souls and then praising their big red idol with a shout-along gang vocal. The sound of the bass guitar is like a buzz-saw hacking it’s way nicely into the sweeping synths and pounding drum beats alongside it.
“Lady Of The Lake” slides into the mix next with some ambiguous lyrical content, building up into trashy shouted vocals and some slick muted bass guitar chugs. This track is HEAVY but has a great underlying groove to it, which contrasts nicely with the much harsher sounding percussive clash of the cymbals. We are then introduced to the pulsating icy synth sting of the most relevant song on the EP so far entitled “The Virus (Interlude). With the necessary creepy Gothic church organ creeping in and becoming nothing short of the new soundtrack to the next installment of the 28 Days Later franchise (28 Years Later maybe?).
“Mountains” fires off guns a-blazing’ with a barrage of noise and some nasty riffs over a very angrily screamed vocal delivery. The breakdown section harks back to that post-apocalyptic end of days vibe that the band have perfectly crafted. Finishing off with the track “Semen Demon”, it really has an infectious bounce to it, sucking you in and smashing you over the head with a glass bottle on arrival. Adding a bit more of a humorous element to this assault on the senses, it’s finishes off our introduction to Anti-Crust’s deformed little realm of fire, eternal suffering and deep pan pepperoni.
This is a band that you NEED to see live at least once in your life. I have been lucky to witness them on several occasions and although I will admit I’m not a huge fan of their music, I still have an affinity to everything they are currently doing and still consider myself a big fan. I’m sure it’s got nothing to do with the vocalist being a giant semi-naked crow with teeth and the giant slice of pizza with a pitchfork who stands on stage with them either. They are truly a unique band who blend together a love of heavy music and absurd comedy with a polite nod to the twisted dark arts which encompasses their whole image. If you are fan of bands such as The Residents, The Misfits or Gnarkill (thanks to my partner Beth for that one!) then you should check them out. It’s like Papa John’s answer to GWAR with deranged results!

FESTIVAL REVIEW: STRANGEFORMS, WHARF CHAMBERS - LEEDS 2017
Having reflexively purchased a ticket upon seeing the immense line-up for last year’s StrangeForms only to find myself unable to attend, I was thrilled to witness the incredible festival for the first time this year. And what a year it was, making up for missing last year with a wealth of friendships forged, conversations relished and most importantly, great bands enjoyed with that mixture of attentiveness and bewilderment that math-rock always brings. In the early Saturday afternoon at the charming DIY space Wharf Chambers, tepid bursts of sunlight shone into the beer garden as punters gathered in surprising numbers to hear local lads Classically Handsome Brutes open the festival. Whopping guitar riffs and thudding bass made for an unsettlingly crunchy sound; the roaring songs always featuring stop/start stabs both as impossibly hard to anticipate as they were tightly performed. Next followed Lost Ground and a subtle change of pace. The first and most delicate vocals of the festival soared over intricate guitar parts, often contrasting with emphatic bass and complimenting jazz-tinged drum work. The set was emotional and engaging, with a sound more lustrous than the sum of its three-pieced together parts.
Off to a great start! The Real Junk Food Project was serving up exquisite food on a pay as you feel basis, fine pale ales were being liberally guzzled inside a venue with the most homely and vibrant feel. An assortment of merchandise and t-shirts colourfully wallpapered the gig room as everyone gleefully quizzed each other in anticipation of their prospective favourite bands to come.
From a line-up brimming with an assortment of three piece bands, Steve Strong stuck out as a tantalising prospect of hearing noises just as full, songs just as enthralling and some of the best drumming of the weekend. Guitar loops were tightly controlled and effortlessly built upon, stripped back from the mix and thrusted in again. Each time the cacophony had found its place, it was given new life by quick and breathtakingly pinpoint percussive work. A stunning performance and a unique chance to see how carefully chosen rhythmic changes can structure a song.
Back to three pieces, this one less time-signature twisting, more groove-fronted power riffs from Memory of Elephants. A tasteful ear for melody was wrestled with as the bass and guitar interlocked with precision to create beefy math-rock at its best. The balanced instrumentation was evident, as the bass shared as many central motifs as the guitar, both musicians tightly synced as if one brain splitting into four hands, blasting sounds through two octave pedals and smashing your eardrums to pieces one spasmodic riff at a time. ‘Who The Fuck Is Runcorn?’, the closer from their second EP, was the pinnacle of the set for me as each stop-start and stab shifted focus around the stage, from ballistic drum fills to bass thuds to guitar screeches. Drums drove the songs with tasteful builds and insanely tight flourishes atop the ride cymbal. Occasional roars demonstrated just how fun it was to be upon the StrangeForms stage.
I took brief notes for the scarily brutal performance of Fall of Messiah, but they seemed so apt ill reproduce them here verbatim: “A voice so piercing a microphone is surplus to requirement. Sounds like This Will Destroy You thrown in a blender and turned up to 11.” That really says it all, I think. My next memory - of bands, not elephants - was of the hypnotically spacey, painstakingly crafted masterpieces that are Poly-Math songs at full tilt. Perhaps VASA, who I’m assured played before Poly-Math, were so jaw-droppingly awesome that they melted the part of my brain that makes memories, for a short period of time about as long as their set. Not to worry, Poly-Math were here to rescue my fragile constitution with warmly curated prog-rock. Bass and drums interlocked, jolting and grooving freely whilst a guitar funnelled through an expansive pedalboard turned neat riffs into spacey wails. The performance was mesmerising, as hands wandered along the guitar neck as if a man strolling along a boardwalk, only to find himself alone at the end, meeting the ocean in a frantic storm, in layers of rapturous guitar and pulsating beats. Take a standard prog song, put it through a washing machine on a spin cycle and you’ve got Poly-Math at their psychedelic best.
To continue the hypnosis, Gallops took to the stage. Technical issues were overlooked as a patient and jovial crowd took the time to ready themselves, using the respite to mentally prepare for the synth-driven, danceable anthems ahead. The wait was more than worth it. Such a carefully crafted sound pits layers of guitar against layers of synth, colliding in a maelstrom of warm noise so atmospheric and so colossal that it opened up a blackhole and sent them in a time warp back to the 80’s, picking up a few cues from synthpop along the way. Gallops make something like ‘tropical math-rock’, with drum pads crunching out over real drums, battled with and battered in the most rhythmic and danceable way. ‘Tropical’ is actually rather apt, as the smooth wash of electronic textures build and twist, the temperature rises and attendant bodies groove throughout the room; it’s not long before the breeze of a synth sound has spun in on itself and whipped up a tropical storm of electronica and massive guitar lines, warbling like the din of a cyclone. And with that, day one was over. The second half of this review will be written through much hazier recollections, as the Saturday night ambled on into the early hours and the Sunday left most feeling the distinct sting of tiredness. The double-espresso shot of noise everyone needed on the Sunday afternoon came in the form of the fearsome Irk. Post-hardcore mixed with mathy tropes, the guttural, raspy screams of the vocalist splattered out over the most tonally warped, gruesome sounding bass guitar I’ve ever heard. All in all, Irk brought warmth and colour to the pallid faces of the those hungover bodies that had dragged themselves down in time to hear it.
Ear-splitting kept to a minimum, the crowd picked themselves up for the contrastingly happy, upbeat sound of A-tota-so. Three musicians have never looked more in control of every note and drum stroke, as they intricately wound their way around tappy riffs and melodic bursts, before sinking into muddy noisy sections with equal control. Best snare drum sound of the festival goes to this set; what a piercing din was made, what a penetrating crunch from a batter head so tight the sticks pinged off it like a trampoline, atop which thrived a most gymnastic and dextrous display of drumming. Drums often proved more than a rhythmic backdrop for guitars to dance over at this festival, it’s only as much as you’d expect from thoughtful math-rock, but none did so more effectively than that of A-tota-so.
As a math-rock lover born in the flat, tediously homogenous farmlands of Lincolnshire, I used to find myself stranded away from festivals like this, lamenting the dearth of good bands in my area. Enter Bear Makes Ninja, Sleaford’s answer to the void left by the vocal driven math-pop-rockers of yesteryear. Think Tubelord at full ferocity, with harmonies abounding as a most bright and crisp guitar tone gives way to a most distorted one. All the while at the back of the stage, beefy drums were navigated with the most robotic, metronomic precision I have ever seen in such a noisy band, with pounding snare and cymbals laid down flawlessly. Not to mention this was done whilst the drummer simultaneously soared away with lustrous backing vocals. Stunning! Tackling parts this technical and channelling them into a fully structured song with three part harmonies and memorable hooks is a difficult task, but when they get it right, boy do BMN get it right. The ascending hallmark riff of 12345 (a favourite from our review of debut album Shenanagrams) was one of the most memorable parts of the weekend for me, and that is as high a compliment as I know how to give from a line-up so saturated with talent.
There were so many great bands on the Sunday that – although it’s too late for brevity – I’ll stick to my personal highlights. Taking to the floor, in the most literal sense, where Scotland’s finest post-rock, math-rock hybrid band, Dialects. With pedalboards this big and musicians using them as they wield guitars like proverbial axes – chopping and turning through the air with a dangerous energy – there was no room for math-rock this animated on such a stage. Standing at crowd level, guitars swelled with heart warming reverb, mind-melting tapping, frantic riffs filtered through delays and tones purpose-chosen; Dialects are an immense force on this scene, giving every ounce of energy to every song. Through the unique dynamic between the two guitars - one controlling and modulating the riff, one experimentally hacking at and bending strings - Dialects create cathartic songs to lose your mind, and all of your troubles, to. Just bring earplugs and watch out for the stray sway of a guitar neck whirling around (see below) as energetically as the riff it’s bringing to your ears.
Axes return to the stage was as fun a finale to the festival as anyone could have wished for. Remembering the intricacies of songs long since played live was a thoroughly entertaining process to watch; intimate and light-hearted, as cheery and spirited as the wonky riffs and jangling math-rock they willed themselves to construct. Thankfully, the audience had done their homework, urging in each new stab and stall to arise and break with head bobs of great precision. The band had a look of astonishment at the music their fingers were carving out of their fretboards. Twiddly, fast tempo riffs bobbled along over chunky bass rumbles, dipping in and out of different time signatures with formidable control and with a perfect balance between the two guitarists, wrestling with each other and both winning. A euphonic and emphatic finish to the weekend. Overall, my first time at StrangeForms did not disappoint. The music was incredible, of course, of this I could scarcely wish my expectations to have been passed, such was the brilliance of the line-up. But it was the atmosphere of the place I was thankful to have experienced. Here, there and everywhere people discussed the music and the musicians, the sets and the scene with voracious interest and excitement. Why is this scene so generous, warm, considerate and always the nexus of many an interesting conversation? Perhaps it is because many of the audience are in some way involved in the scene, creatively, artistically, from t-shirt designs to posters, PR and promotion, record labels, distros, videographers and writers – the passion is still somehow infectious in a crowd where everyone has already caught the bug. The joy of each head bang, of each pedal-tap induced wall of sound is lost on no-one; unique to this epicentre of musicians, artists and listeners is the feeling that everyone has taken time to totally immerse themselves in the scene. This noisy world is one of few where everyone is so friendly and familiar with everyone else, so buoyed in collective anticipation by a good line-up at the next of many events, from Bristol to Brighton, Leeds to London and beyond; there are no half-hearted math-rock lovers, and few are more passionate than Bad Owls about good music and good people.
Like every band that took to the stage, I’d like to heartily thank Stewart and Kerry and everyone else amongst the Bad Owls team for putting on such a great weekend of music! Words by Jonny Gleadell. Images by Tiago Morelli (http://feckingbahamas.com/author/tiago-morelli)

Can you win against giant animals and continue to feed your tribe or you will your hunt for good as these animals stomp you to death? The decision is yours to make.
Big Hunter Game Features
Fluid Visuals and Soothing Sounds
The Big Hunter game features clean 3D graphics and animation. Every animal has a different characteristic. Some are dark and monochromatic while others are silly and realistic and does not appear threatening at all. The tribe leader avatar is a featureless silhouette with bright white eyes while the background mostly features a solid color. African percussion sounds make it perfect for hunting due to its rhythmical characteristic.
A Very Impressive Story with an Unexpected Ending
The story begins with a nomad from a tribal community that experienced drought and rampant starvation. As a tribal leader, your goal is to provide food and sustenance to your tribe by hunting gigantic pre-historic animals. The game features different challenging levels with a very nice storyline to keep you entertained while you complete your mission. Play the game until the end and fall in love with the unexpected but pleasant twist.
An Addicting Physics-Based Hunting Game
This addicting arcade game involves throwing weapons in the right direction to hunt animals. In order to defeat the gigantic prey, you are required you to aim and adjust your throwing powers to hit every animal on their weak spot. Perfect your aiming shot as you try to hit your targets in many challenging situations. Maintain your ability to move back at a safe distance and find the right balance between walking and firing backward while guarding your own life, as one wrong move could end your life!
Simple Yet Tricky Gameplay
The gameplay is very simple – you are set on the screen with large animals with their “soft spot” marks and your goal is to aim your spear to make a fatal strike. Take the giant animals down using your Big Hunter best weapon like spears, ax, and boomerang. You can practice your skills with fake animals at the “training camp” section and once you are confident enough, you can go out and hunt your tribe’s dinner.
Big Hunter Game Tips and Tricks
Don’t be Afraid to Move Back
While your goal is to hunt the mammoth down, you will also need to run away from it frequently, moving back to the left will do the trick. As you move forward, the mammoth gets bigger and stronger making it impossible to defeat and if you will not be careful on your moves, you might end up dying from the mammoth’s gigantic feet.
Know Your Weapons
Big Hunter online game is a tricky projectile game that will put your skills and patience to the test. Unlike the Angry Birdswhich is a similar game, Big Hunter will require you to protect yourself and your prey knows how to protect themselves (the mammoths have enormous tusk that blocks them) and the best way to win this game is to get the right weapon. The weapons vary from ax, spear, sickle, boomerang, stones, shuriken and knife. Each weapon has its own damage and usage difficulty but they are quite expensive so you must really do well in hunting to afford them. It is important to know the usage of your weapon so you know exactly what to use in each situation and when to use them.

Should you really opt for your crew surely, anything all unfolds together with each other similar to a surely oiled system, and everyone becomes wealthy. Both equally could genuinely apply a further circular of bug fixes, |In addition to a multitude of surely computer animated go to allergic reactions, the seem to be negative effects give Payday 2 Dozer Mask Code s gunplay a punchiness that asked to drag the result in time and again. Disabling security alarms, silently obtaining patches, and correctly maintaining civilian crowds of people all have a nice special affect on how quickly and just how considerable law enforcement treatment will be. However the great thing of has to be that even now that tasks typically are unsuccessful plus the emphasis shifts from performing an agenda to pondering within your ft, Payday 2 Dozer Mask Code continues to be a great time. Sections of its powerpoint presentation are losing, plus the circumstance from the specific participant is legal, but all around, it can be a in depth, addictive co op shooter that tickled my inside thief. The good thing about Payday 2 Dozer Mask Code is around how absolutely it assumes the id it’s particular itself. For even more specifics where put together the original edition so first-rate, take a peek at our 2013 Payday 2 Dozer Mask Code evaluation. excellent quality of lifetime and steadiness enhancements that have been put together. Crimewave release provides right here drastically, both considering the fact that of all the supplementary skill-sets and machinery, and a consequence of adding more the pre organization element for most quests, which enables you to seriously get in touch with favors and spend cash in return for video camera acquire, |Overkill knows about the situation, and it has labored to resolve it, but i really believe, the ps4 edition was the more within the web undergo. Why not consider we comparisons mention the particular structural matchmaking? I purchasedorbefore decided to buy the sport for x1 so i have tried 20 instances to sign up a matchmade lv trainer, and merely now that has it labored. At the moment it can be a awful specific participant lv trainer in addition to the desires of witcher 3, batman with ac black colored flag lately entirely free for xbl gold men and women, i ve no time/use for Payday 2 Dozer Mask Code failedtojoingamewave release. The problem was another protect, patrolling the carpark and going up at the top every few a short time. They must have observed law enforcement on rate call, considering the fact that seconds after we are dealt with toward the wailing screech of this siren. Nonetheless the developers don t give relating to this accumulation. |The top heights understand this, and provide a thing to try and do above and beyond sneak up quietly. The meth lab vision demands a minumum of a organization user to lightly create food ingredients toward the fusion through the fabulous time, when you are every person else struggles heavily armoured swat enforcers with the cooking field downstairs. The scrabble to mend whatever s went unsuitable without having to be confused is truly a chaotic thrill. Thank goodness, the type progression menus stay obvious enough, and Payday 2 Dozer Mask Code offers a tricky variety of ability foliage you are able to flit somewhere between on impulse. Recollect my not quiet enough silencer through the financial institution rooftop? I m happy to have the funds for a better a specific with respect the updates navigation, it But nonetheless, i can not view your damaging standpoint all over the lv trainer in the event it s been more effective across The strain of organization and continuing to keep tasks tranquil, the excitement of asserting manipulate when all heck splits loose, plus the total satisfaction of this successful score outshine any boring places, performing Payday 2 Dozer Mask Code an hugely rewarding method to get together with each other to get a existence of crime. You will find round 10 distinctive jobs that turn up continually with assorted difficulty heights having an effect on how tricky and just how lucrative they ll be. You cant be faultlessly ready for wages, and that is certainly this way it needs to be. Or anybody, anywhere would possibly discover the tinkling of harmed window, and just before very long, the cops are enroute plus your evade truck has bugged out. |On more challenging jobs, there s a good deal more loot to get than simple to pull off, appealing you to try to support on a great deal more time to obtain a fatter payday. of charts suggests that almost all game enthusiasts have a very good indication how to carry on so whenever to have it successfully done, but possessing the power to communicate continues to be beneficial. You unlock weapons continuously, but tool attachments like scopes, suppressors, shares, barrel The units and mechanics have the ability to simple flaws and constraints, nonetheless they shared undertakings to put transpires for exhilarating heists that you will want to drag time and again. 2013 very best laptop or computer lv trainer. Entirely damaged the city when you are this. However the lv trainer includes a lot more than 30 a variety of heists, no vision will likely have out the exact same way, simply because of randomised vision variables, which can frankly deliver the lv trainer a variety of replayability. Its adverts a bunch of realism. |They d to blow the original out of the liquids. The ability foliage now will be your mastermind (quite simply your best option out of the bunch, he has the ability to from tips and recovery toward the organization), the medical specialist (leave behind expecting looking forward to someone to opt for locks, take advantage of the technical to blow an cracking open throughout the retaining wall), the enforcer (basically the arnold schwarzenegger out of the organization, he s your gunman) plus the ghost (he s the stealthy mofo, use him to jam electronics industries, and scanning devices). My only want was which i could possibly have put in supplementary time in the open air taking advantage of direct sun light sun rays, as the range method of the exterior environments are exceedingly alluring to the interest simply because the confinements out of the household locales are dull and gloomy because they are financial institutions and jewelry retailers. It’s a 4 participant co op shooter, with ability foliage in fact it is unique shape of loot drops. Add that every vision has a number of variables so tasks will embark on to some extent in another way each time. Most quests are often stealthed thru, that is terribly rewarding once your organization could collaborate to drag out of the “perfect crime” with out cops obtaining necessary. Paycheck 2 is often rather addictive and plenty of enjoyment, with many different quests simply being about possessing your ground and also a a small number of driving consumers to seriously propel onward in time. Round the downside, i ve veteran a good amount of complexities. |My other issue is not enough endgame articles. In which Payday 2 Dozer Mask Code will go absolutely unsuitable happens when it will take apart manipulate. In a similar fashion, the drawn out grind could be very strenuous. to progress terribly bit by bit in Payday 2 Dozer Mask Code. Identical to cod wouldn’t be what it s as we speak without the need for savings private ryan, payday wouldn’t be what it s as we speak without the need for michael mann’s mythical sequence all over the roadways of los angeles. My own most popular showcase out of the new heists happens when overkill shuffles variables for virtually every presented vision. the revolutionary ability tree. In the meantime, our safecracker would kindly encourage the administrator to allow his keycard, switch off the protection body and acquire drilling all over the vault, simply because the two other people in our surgical procedure searched for virtually every civilians we d ignored throughout the backrooms and stashed away a wrist watch in the open air. |So up at the top i wear my mask, acquire my silenced pistol, and anything would head down to heck. Quite often, it Furthermore, it suggests that your own judgement in the beginning of the vision somewhere between using simple civilian outfits or conspicuous body armour is The gunplay is vanilla flavor, in there are no gimmicks to understand or unconventional lv trainer These weapons have truthful heft and will go bullets in very loud, percussive blasts. Alternatively , you ll quite possibly just await a vision you intend to peek, and in addition, given it finally will your whole community map picture just gets to be a tiresome coating at the top out of the vision shopping process. It is the irony right here. Paycheck 2 is primarily a web-based depending multiple participant to start with people shooter game enthusiasts select a heist while using new and unnecessarily puzzling “crime.net” an active graphical user interface that tasks as the vision |This wasn t the best judgement, as stealth isn t effective in to start with people premiums, in fact it is put together even more difficult right here by means of the pointless ai competitors will randomly home you and also also initialize security alarms it doesn t subject how shut down or illegitimate the thing you do is, also in the unpleasant activity you are relying on bots inside of your variety of 4, you will find terribly normally which they may well result in security alarms or began firing into crowds of people, ruining any potential for secretly completing a vision. The game is fixed which has a considerable inadequate Conceptually fascinating, but inane and uninspiring in performance. None of the is always to say Payday 2 Dozer Mask Code isn t superb, just frustrating. The stealth mechanics in contrast are actually superior through the to start with lv trainer. Would you like to discover how the video game execute with your is most effective in the simplest way? Firstly you re happy to the monitor that indicates you defeat the heist, pick either You said it was so difficult to get men and women to enjoy the fun with (despite the fact that there exists regularly men and women to enjoy the fun with upon i played) why do you want to allow it to be more difficult? I give this evaluation a from 5. entertainment out of the run after dulled, our escapades increased becoming typical instead of daring, as well as something by a specific our attentions waned and we all drifted over to other activities. Just after i ended taking part notebook computer laptop or desktop lv trainer, i d a totally evolved individuality and also a trustworthy crew of water vapor associates to after upon i is in the atmosphere to get a heist. |even a specific personalized slips up. Figure skill-sets are private well behind course foliage dedicated to looking after of heisting or some other (masterminds manipulate hostages in addition the crew venturing, enforcers can be heavy hitters and vault rippers, ghosts look at stealth and technical gadgets, and many more.). In a similar fashion, face masks, products, and habits are unlocked thru random drops and after that add The upshot is truly a gigantic choice in individuality builds, tool possibilities, and practices. three years to experiment with together, and also a.i. Should you really under no circumstances particular through the crimewave release for possibly of this found gen consoles, $49.99 will never be an inadequate will cost you to easily begin and enjoy yourself with almost all dlc which is introduced. Overkill put in three years bolting on fancier spoilers, signals, and hubcaps when exactly what it vital had been a change from the crammed up transmitting. Ideally, despite the fact, nobody may find us use. |I think that a lot of game enthusiasts have a nice quite similar feel the lv trainer is definitely really hard. Afterwards, game enthusiasts can select a loadout there are numerous kinds of several firearms, attachments, and face masks to equip, with talents and skill-sets determined by what you decide to spec for. I truly do not truly have a nice numerous loadout, it totally is dependent on which kind of vision it s and merely what those other squad s compose is. denoting who what so whenever, with talking about loadouts.

In case you decide on your team correctly, all the things all will come along like a correctly oiled equipment, and everyone could possibly get well-off. This is basically the similar storyline in the course of. Though the health premium features around 30 different heists, no quest has out the exact same way, because of randomised quest causes, that could truthfully supply the health premium a great number of replayability. Pay day 2 is intended for co op. |Gunplay and snap outs, Download Payday 2 Hack gives no realistic videos on the subject of simple tips to build a heist they just specified the ambitions and provide a few different effects on the subject of how to deal with. At this time Download Payday 2 Hack quickly turns into a horde setting health premium with surf of enemies struggling to prevent you from your own quest. From the motions mindset, Download Payday 2 Hack is known as a realistically ‘by the numbers’ for starters man or women shooter and also the utter sum of law enforcement which are usually brought to their dying vs could very well be the two of them foolish and amazingly frustrating at gatherings. And yes it ll. Pay day 2 is mainly an online dependent multi participant for starters man or women shooter individuals select a heist when using new and unnecessarily baffling “crime.net” an entertaining visual interface that options because of the quest |Every individual problem right now has some time to “case” the location, to judge the best method to take care of the heist and plot out avoid ways. No advancements or upgrades increase the have the heists which transpire across two or three days with “branching” sequences be regarded as a discouraging task. Why they will not decide on equipment up for you personally happens since there d stop being any cause of the gamer to finish noticeably in addition. Do you want to discover how the game play carry out for your specific works out in the simplest way? First you re qualified to the display that suggests you surpass the heist, determine whether or not Not anyone really wants to knowledge about somebody that issues. You re recorded out.
