DiCaprio demuestra desde pequeña edad tener talento por la actuación, y sin duda este papel le quedó como anillo al dedo. Y Depp, a pesar de su no tan espléndida presentación, nos enseña la importancia de tener más de una expresión en la gran pantalla.

Sinopsis. 

En Endora, un pequeño pueblo del Medio Oeste americano, vive Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp), un joven empleado en una tienda de abarrotes, vive abrumado por sus responsabilidades familiares: tiene que cuidar de una madre inmensamente obesa y de un hermano menor con discapacidad mental (DiCaprio). También tiene una aventura con una mujer casada (Mary Steenburgen), pero su vida emocional y personal cambiará por completo gracias a la aparicion de Becky (Juliette Lewis), una chica divertida y de espíritu libre.

Crítica.

Desde inicio de la película se muestra que el personaje de Leonardo DiCaprio no posee características que clasifican a una persona como “normal”. Su rol es de un adolescente de 17 años (casi a cumplir 18) que sufre de un mal mental (en la película no se especifica cuál sea) que lo hace parecer con retraso. En toda su aparición en el filme no hay ni un segundo que se vea a DiCaprio y asegures que es normal. Definitivamente una de sus mejores actuaciones, totalmente tranquilo y sin exageraciones.

Johnny Depp se queda corto a lado de DiCaprio. Su personaje tal vez sea menos variado y no tan energético, pero hay varias escenas que se requerían de diferentes expresiones y simplemente deja su misma cara que hasta la fecha sigue haciendo cuando hay problemas: ojos ligeramente abiertos y labios poco separados.

Para tener una trama un tanto melodramática se logró no llegar a la incomodidad o tristeza, lo que le da puntos extra. Pero si transmite desesperación hacia la falta de fuerza de voluntad de la madre. Ver que se invierten los roles de la familia y son sus hijos los que toman el papel de padres para hacerse cargo del hijo “retrasado”, y prácticamente la mamá es una carga más pesada que el mismo Arnie (DiCaprio).

El final es muy bueno, deja el mensaje de librarse de las ataduras que a veces nosotros mismos nos ponemos y nos quitan nuestra libertad. También ver que Arnie no es una carga, que es lo que usualmente se piensa sobre las personas que no tienen las mismas capacidades que los demás.

Oh also, again, since apparently “speaking somebody.....” is your criteria for “predator”, I guess everybody’s one now, huh????

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape: Filming Locations

Hey guys! We are in Endora, IA...or, various cities in Texas hunting down filming locations for the movie What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. The movie follows Gilbert Grape and his family as they try to navigate life in a small town. It has both Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio in one movie! Although the movie was filmed in 1993, some of the locations still exist! When you drive into Manor, TX, you are basically in Endora, IA! Check it out!

Parking: Depends on the location.

Worth a Visit: If you enjoyed the movie, then check it out! The town of Manor, TX is the exact town portrayed in the movie. Also, the grocery store still exists, but now it’s a convenience store. We bought a water at Lamson’s Grocery, now Manor Grocery. Although we visited various locations, the main town is located at 102 W. Parsons St in Manor, TX.
