New GitS (2045) is pretty good surprisingly. More waxing and waning below the read me.
So after the disasters (imo) that were the reimagining/reboot movies, show(s?), and manga that was GitS:Arise, I was really worried that the latest show would turn out the same half-baked plots and character developments of the former, and while it may not be perfect, 2045 does manage to atleast feel like a GitS show. I’ll try to keep spoilers to a minimum.
The plot is kind of out there in terms of scale and also kind of weirdly placed if you consider that it still takes place before the first and second [original] GitS movies, and some oddly returning characters considering the ending that was SAC 2, maybe there’s some manga tie-in that I haven’t read that fills the gaps, but it’s a strange feeling going into 2045 knowing these things. But despite that, it still manages to be pretty interesting all things considered, enough to hook you and have you be invested, but the first season was very action-focused, taking advantage of the new 3D models, which I’ll delve into a bit, and not as philosophical or slow paced as SAC 1 & 2 were, pros & cons in any regard, but definitely 2045 manages to be more casual-viewer-friendly.
The cast, most notably the Major & Batou are still pretty on point. I’m more comfortable and familiar with their english VAs, spicy opinion I know -- but it’s what I’m used to with the GitS series, and beyond the language barrier their japanese VAs still do a fantastic job in convincing me that they are the characters I know so well -- as do the writers. There have been one or two oddities in my opinion, one that stands out to me is the Major reacting shocked next to her teammates to some information that wasn’t much of a bombshell, but that’s an extreme nitpick.
The 3d-models are actually really well done. Especially when compared to some more choppy-framed models like used in Blame!, still a very good movie all things considered for it, or the atrocity that was the latest Berserk show. Everything is extremely smooth in both animation lulls like simple dialogue or characters pacing, and when the explosions and gunfire start going off. And boy, is there quite a bit of that. I imagine because of the 3d-models, they; the writers, directors, and screenplay artists, are able to take more freedom and plot more rambunctious fight scenes, but it really feels out of hand sometimes. And while SAC 1 & 2 were just as theatrical, they got around a lot of the animation using close-ups and shaky-camera effects to give the illusion more was going on around the scene, because 3d-animation doesn’t suffer from that too much on a production-level, the camera angles tend to be far away, showing more but still jump cutting as much as the old shows, giving me the feeling of not being as invested in fight scenes, because the scope is so much broader, but during the lulls they do some interesting sweeps and motions. One minor spoiler is that all the main cast now have thermoptic camoflague just seemingly built into all of them, including Togusa for some reason?
The scenery tends to be devoid of life too, not so much as the lack of background characters but it just feels very still. To me it feels like the modeling and animation teams aren’t taking full advantage of the 3d technology, to give life to the background more when it is visible. The models of the main cast look pretty well, although Togusa ends up looking like a Tekken 2 CGI model at some points early on in the season. There were however some niceties they didn’t have to really mention or bring up regarding the previously mentioned returning characters. Still don’t know why they’ve made a comeback, though. A big chip for me despite all this, is the fact that Togusa has so far not been seen with his signature Mateba autorevolver.
The music they used for the intro is horrible, imo, either is too on the nose or it’s too removed from the tonality of the show, and I cannot decide which it’ll end up being other than something I dislike. The outro is pretty alright though, nothing ground breaking like we had been treated with by Origa with SAC 1 & 2 but it does show the neat concept art by Kuvshinov.Illya, kudos on them on making some pleasant designs. I have some stern words for the ones that wrote the character traits for Prin, though.
All-in-all, 2045 seems to be off to the right start, they could really use that sting a little less. It’s a good sting, but they use it waaaay too much. Looking forward to the next 12 episodes. And assuming you read all that -- jesus I wrote a lot -- thanks for taking the time for reading some doofus spout his opinions about japanese polygons! Or if you clicked on the read more, scrolled down, just to read this, the tl;dr was before the read more, and you, infact, are the doofus.
