Hey Inheritance Cycle Readers,
I need some feedback. I am working on my AU story of Eragon and Saphira joining Murtagh and Thorn as they investigate the Draumars.
I’m trying to figure out how Umaroth and Glaedr would add to the scene.
Basically, trying to figure out how would Umaroth and Glaedr add or change the story?
The first priority is the protection and preservation of their kind, and the order of the Dragon riders, which means they want Eragon safer at all costs, and Umaroth doesn’t want Murtagh in a position that’s out of his depth.
Would they, or just Umaroth, give a history lesson on the Draumars to try to persuade Murtagh to not go?
I don’t think it would negate or cancel Murtagh’s reconnaissance mission from Carabel, since the mission is to find out what is currently brewing up North and how big is the danger that been moving in the shadows, in the grassroots, throughout the land.
Eventually, it gets the point where Murtagh is still adamant about looking into this threat, and Eragon, determined to protect his brother (and make up for failing to rescue him from the Twins), goes with him.

GLAEDR. MY BELOVED. WISE AND ANGRY AND OLD. HE’S BEEN THROUGH SO MUCH…

Propaganda
Errol: He is just a tiny little rocket powered swamp dragon with big ambitions. Said ambition is the giant true dragon that is capable of incinerating entire houses, unlike swamp dragons who mostly just explode. Sometimes you just have to impress your date that is seveal times your size by achieving faster-than-sound flight via rocket propulsion. Also errol ate a lot of things, several of which shouldn't be eaten.

inheritance cycle modern au in which all of the dragons are horses which makes eragon the underdog horse girl, saphira the underdog girl horse and brom the disgruntled and disillusioned horse trainer who doesn’t believe in the validity of this sport until he sees the ✨bond✨ eragon has with his horse saphira who is still as blue as she is in canon (don’t ask that‘s just how it works, if you question this, i‘ll track your ip).
and galbatorix is the aggressively eastern european horse girl dad who had some sort of hip injury that brought his eventing career to an abrupt end and now he must vicariously live through his protégé, murtagh, lest he kills himself. and thorn is the very expensive horse galbatorix bought for wish fulfillment purposes and murtagh and thorn are so horribly traumatized by all the stress and pressure of defeating little kids at the pony finals that they ✨bond✨.
oromis and glaedr are their direct opponents and galbatorix nancy kerrigan‘s them (oromis dies like he does canonically because honestly, hunters be like that) so murtagh can get his ribbon. and then there‘s the big final competition and eragon, underdog wonder magic horse girl, goes toe to toe with murtagh, tortured champion to be, and they have this epic horse battle (an 80cm clear round but the atmosphere is very intense) and eragon loses. but then brom delivers this epic speech about idk man like success and passion and whatnot and then he dies which gives eragon the final push to defeat murtagh but OH NO, thorn is HURT from being OVERWORKED and murtagh has an epic horse peril breakdown and tearfully tells galbatorix he‘ll withdraw.
so galbatorix goes „fuck the kid“ and gets shruikan (the very bad very big black warmblood stallion that shows up in every horse girl movie) to best eragon HIMSELF (but not before locking nasuada, the animal rights activist that murtagh has struck up a tentative romance with, in a porta-potty). and then him and eragon compete and it‘s INTENSE (meanwhile, roran and katrina have a sub plot about capturing a flock of runaway ducks that is constantly being cut to during that climactic scene) and shit is looking DISMAL for poor eragon until a vision of brom and also his dead mother, because this is a proper horse girl movie and not some bibi und tina bullshit, and that gives him the strength to defeat galbatorix.
and then he wins and thorn doesn’t die and someone frees nasuada from the porta-potty and she gets to punch galbatorix in the face. and fírnen (who is a horse but also still green) emerges during the post credit scene and meets arya and sets up a cash grabby amazon prime spinoff series and roran and katrina successfully capture the ducks and everyone is happy and there is no more horse peril.
the whole thing takes place in exactly one horse show afternoon. it makes such perfect sense actually you can fit everyone in. nar garzvog‘s at the grill and makes hot dogs. islanzadi does nothing but drink cheap wine and bitch from the sidelines. angela mans the beverage stall and tells everyone who wants to listen (or doesn’t) that toads don’t exist. solembum is the raccoon on her shoulder who violates all fda guidelines by simply existing. orrin is nasuada‘s bitter ex boyfriend who pretended to be vegan for years so she‘d like him only to be dumped for murtagh and his emo swagger in a heartbeat. orik is a shetland pony.

The Banishing of Names for the Forsworn’s dragons would be so much worse if Chris didn’t have to write their existence. Because writing ‘Kialandí’s dragon’ or ‘Enduriel’s dragon’ still gives them an identifying label. A name. People would know they existed, obviously, but have no way to refer to them.
It’s a lot easier to see why Glaedr hates memory spells now.

Off topic but, the sass is strong with this elder!
Question: Why did they use the og covers for all the german first editions, except for the third one? Also curious in what other languages they used that cover?
Talking about Glaedr trying his best to make a double-chin pic or something:

I will always be so sad and angry that Eragon never recognized how horribly the elves treated him and that no one else helped protect him from it either. Oromis is so insidiously and inexcusably cruel to him and Eragon truly deserved the chance to escape that and see the damage he caused, and also to then beat Oromis into a bloody pulp. And Glaedr too, honestly. He's mostly gone unscathed in my past rants, largely because at least his personality isn't so insufferable, but he ain't shit either. He's fully complicit in all of Oromis's vile abuse, and adds to it himself in certain places. They more than earn Eragon's ire, but they all constantly belittle him and insist that they inherently know better than him about everything, and poor Eragon believes them, so he doesn't fight back. No!!! Every misgiving you have about them is true, and not only should you stand your ground, but you should also start maiming them!!!!!
Oromis's mannerisms are respectful, kind, and gentle, but they in no way indicate his actual feelings. It just serves as a guise, while their actions demonstrate that both he and Glaedr don't have a single shred of respect for Eragon. They don't trust him, they don't put faith in him, they don't care about his wellbeing, and they have so much contempt for him. And they do all that while they take everything from Eragon, demanding he sacrifice himself constantly, and not always just in the interest of beating the Empire! In some cases it's solely an expression of their resentment of him or a way to cut away at the parts of him they don't like.
And Eragon gives them everything, so earnestly and generously. Then they give him jack shit. They only give him whatever suits their intention to use him as a weapon, and even in that, they pick and choose things to withhold according to their disdain for him. Contempt is all he gets in return for his trust and loyalty.
And it makes me sad how Saphira isn't there for him in this. In her defense, she's very young and they harm her also by prioritizing her utility to them over anything else, which she sadly does not recognize either. But beyond that, the elves and Oromis and Glaedr specifically treat her far, far better than they treat Eragon. She's in no way responsible for their actions, but there are places where she enables the abuse. Most often through overlooking it, but sometimes when Eragon rightfully balks at their mistreatment, then turns to Saphira for her input, she tells him, "I trust them and I think you should be deferring to them."
Eragon is so earnest and compassionate and he deserves care, both in the form of other people caring about his wellbeing, and also through the chance for him to learn how he can and should care for himself. Yet at the end of the series, he's so conditioned to accept manipulation and abuse and I just want my poor boy to have a chance to rest and HEAL 😭

Aa quick! A load of chickens have escaped from somewhere! Ic character reactions
wow these chickens are everywhere by now—
ERAGON: Has a chicken under each arm and is trying to wrangle a third. He is covered in mud and feathers.
MURTAGH: Still chasing chicken #1.
ARYA: Has caught way too many already and no one’s quite sure how but there’s more than enough to spare.
RORAN: Is repairing the barn.
ORIK: Shouting and cursing at the chicken he is dragging back to the barn.
ANGELA: Is scolding the chickens into army formation.
NASUADA: Is not getting involved in this physically, but is pointing out all the chickens’ hiding places to everyone alongside Elva, who is gaslighting the chickens.
GARZHVOG: Trying to chase the chickens into the barn. Now despises chickens.
OROMIS: *nods sagely* they will handle this very well. *walks away.*
SAPHIRA and FÍRNEN: Watching with immense amusement, occasionally scaring the chickens so they’ll run faster and liven up the game.
THORN: *stares in intense concern*
ORRIN: Is using a concoction that smells like chicken pheromones to lure the chickens where he wants them.
GLAEDR: Ate a chicken.

Something something professional artist jargon something something insert art knowledge here—whatever I want to talk about the book covers
Tumblr media
So you’ve got Eragon, with a 3/4 portrait of Saphira; she’s giving a benevolent side eye with almost a Mona Lisa smile, she’s got that gleam in her eye, she’s looking at you but not head on—listen, this was the whole reason I picked up the book in the first place when I was eleven, she was so clearly full of life and personality and I just really wanted to meet her. It’s a really good glimpse of her character before even opening the book. She’s engaging you, but also maybe judging you a little bit, and she has a lot of thoughts but she’s going to keep them to herself for right now, thank you.
Tumblr media
We’re skipping Eldest for right now because I have a point to make. Shush.
For Brisingr, we get a perfect side portrait of Glaedr, the grumpy old man. He’s not even side-eyeing the viewer like Saphira does; he is eyes forward, goal-oriented, noble and regal and, unless you’re worth his time, not really going to bother with you because he has Important Business to attend to. He is The Last of the pre-Fall dragons, his Rider is The Last of the pre-Fall Riders, he represents a bygone era that will never fully be resurrected, but can still inspire the present to fight for the future; he is no longer fully his own dragon, but a Relic, a Memory, a Symbol. He’s not anxious about it the way Eragon or Saphira might be; he has grieved for a century, he couldn’t be anxious about it if he tried. But he knows that keeping his integrity intact is important, and so this is how he presents himself: Noble. Regal. The Survivor. The Last.
Tumblr media
Fírnen graces the cover of Inheritance, bookending the original series by almost perfectly mirroring Saphira—and seriously, it is so satisfying to line the books up with these two at the ends. Though he’s got a 3/4 profile like Saphira, Fírnen is much more reserved. No Mona Lisa smile, no mischievous gleam in his eye; he simply looks at you, and you look back, and you wonder what he’s thinking. He is, in fact, a lot like Arya—anyone who’s read the previous three books up to that point and hasn’t been spoiled for the ending might be able to guess, just from this portrait, who the final egg would hatch for. It’s also a perfect expression for the Final Book, with the fate of Alagaësia and the dragons hanging in the balance: what world does this mysterious dragon emerge into? A war-torn apocalypse? A hard-won victory? What does his future entail, and thus, what do the futures of our favorite characters entail? You ask him so many questions, but all he will ever do is stare deep into your soul with his somber, too-knowing gaze.
And now for the main event:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My beautiful precious son, the red-scaled Thorn, staring you down from the covers of both Eldest and Murtagh. I have loved the cover of the second book ever since I first picked it up, and my appreciation has only grown with time; needless to say I was very excited when the Murtagh cover dropped, and I got to see both of my favorite characters in one place. For both of these, Thorn takes the same stance: a full-frontal combative position, looking You, The Viewer directly in the eye, daring you to judge him, daring you to get in his way. I’ve always had my own opinions about what lay behind this show of force, and the context we get in Murtagh does not disappoint. He may be terrifying, he may be the scourge of the war, but underneath all that, Thorn is terrified. He’s traumatized, he’s claustrophobic, his body is too big for his age; he is painfully young still, and yet treated like a dragon ten times his age because that’s how he looks. He’s also sweet, and playful, and cares so much about his Rider, and wants desperately to keep Murtagh safe and happy. Just like Murtagh, he hides all of that—the fear and the softness both—behind a visage of ferocity, playing into the fears and preconceived notions people have of him, warning enemies away so they can’t get too close to what will actually hurt him. He dares you to try. He’s terrified you will try. He will fight tooth and nail if you do try.

Post-“Murtagh”:
Glaedr pointedly at Murtagh: A little more sense of self- preservation from you would be beneficial.
Murtagh rankled and irritated to get this kind of lecture from Glaedr.
(Murtagh’s Memory): You could have saved us!
Murtagh: With respect master, if I had that level of self preservation, the queen of the elves would have died a princess, and your last students would have been delivered by the Ra’zac into Galbatorix’s hands.

It actually makes perfect sense that all known apprentices of Oromis and Glaedr were humans.
Oromis was about 17 years old when humans were included in the pact with dragons. He would have trained with the very first human Riders. Moreover, throughout most of his youth, Riders were not permitted in Du Weldenvarden (because Queen Dellanir was salty), so he would have spent time among the younger races whenever not with his fellow Riders.
What I'm trying to say is, him and Glaedr are familiar with humans, with their culture and issues they might have adapting to the Rider lifestyle, so it makes perfect sense they would be the ones to train human Riders later on.
