Say what you want about Gregory Maguire and The Wicked Years books, at least he had a set of balls.

Like, the man did not back down from making an unashamedly queer book series about a classic book series that, intentionally or not, did have queer elements. And also took heavy inspriation from a classic movie made based on those books where Billie Burke played Glinda.

This man made the gayest, most trans friendly (for the 90s and early oughts), series of books I've ever come across. You've got polyamory right out the gate. Bisexuals, lesbians, gays, and pansexuals galore. A trans princess (no I will not let this go, can't believe this is canon in the og books too).

Elphie's bi, Glinda's a lesbian, Dorothy is some kind of fruity and going around kissing girls, a whole day couple legit just exists in the background which I will forgive simply because the book is primarily centered around Elphie's story.

Okay imagine a fun little glitch in the universe that led to Book!Glinda and Movie/Musical!Glinda to swap worlds, so Book!Glinda ends up in the musical and Movie/Muscial!Glinda ends up in the book. And well, Movie/Musical!Glinda is so far removed from Book!Glinda. Book!Elphaba will catch what's wrong so quickly.

And Book!Glinda has magic while Movie/Musical!Glinda barely does.

Oh and Book!Glinda likes architecture.

And Book!Elphaba calls Glinda things like "my dear" pretty often while Movie/Musical!Elphaba doesn't so that would be funny.

I love the gelphie tag on ao3 so much but it surprises me how few of them want to use the power of fanfic to bring the movie/musical version of glinda the same power she has in the books, both the og and the wicked years books, like, morrible's weather thing? That's glinda's power in the og book she was the good witch of the south with weather powers(and plant based powers, like Rio from AAA) and in the Wicked books she was not as helpless as they made her in the musical either she can use magic even if tends to explode from what i remember lmao. I have several issues with how badly glinda and fiyero suffered from their original versions to the musical and by consequence the movie as a whole tbh.

Edit: OH YEAH AND THAT'S ME FORGETTING TO MENTION HOW IN BAUM'S VERSION NOT ONLY SHE WAS ALL THAT BUT SHE WAS ALSO A SCIENTIST AND HAD AN ALL WOMEN ARMY AND KEPT 100 OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMEN OF OZ IN HER MANSION anyway i digress, musical glinda was done dirty compared to other versions of the character and i stand by that

the way Glinda’s name change happens in the book is just so much more it always makes me a little upset of how shallow it is in the musical

like it’s more or less a trauma response for her. Because it’s still more or less because of Dr. Dillamond, but it’s because Dr. Dillamond was murdered

And its not only “I feel bad about getting upset that Dr Dillamond said my name wrong” but it’s also like, a response to Glinda realizing the kind of world she’s in

Because Glinda is the only person who would immediately know that Madame Morrible was responsible.

Because the only witness was Ama Clutch, who immediately upon witnessing it fell ill with a relapse of a disease that she supposedly had, and the only people who knew about this supposed fake illness was Galinda and Morrible.

And then suddenly Ama Clutch has it for real and right when she could reveal what happened to Dr. Dillamond?

Glinda obviously knows that Morrible is involved because they point out immediately that she won’t go to see Morrible anymore and when she tries to reassign her and Elphaba to the main dormitory, Glinda just accepts it when she had been repulsed by the idea before. It’s Elphaba who has push against that and to get Nanny (and Nessarose) to Shiz so that they can stay roommates and “preserve Glinda’s dignity.”

Like Galinda would never have let herself meekly get shuffled in with the common students. That’s what got her in this in the first place.

But Glinda knows shes in a dangerous world with dangerous people who can and will use her. It’s not all social climbing and polite company, it’s two people she knew having their lives ended and her being directly tied up in that, and knowing that she knows who did it and that she can’t do anything.

It’s a very, very scary world suddenly and that’s the reason why Galinda makes way for Glinda. She can’t be a naive girl anymore and literally has to become someone else to go on
