History being rewritten for the nth time as we speak, as the local reporting on the recent events in the Netherlands now pays only passing notice to the provocation of the Israeli visitors, and most of the english language and international official responses claim these are random antisemitic attacks, in a city that has a large jewish population.

My friend who is in the area says there was local reporting about the israeli visitors loudly saying slurs and damaging public property before any attacks.

I do think it is very worthwhile to consider the role of antisemitism in the severity of the attacks, but I also think it is worth separating that from both anti-zionism (in the sense of the current state of Israel) and the simple 'fighting words' doctrine. Especially given that, if they wanted to attack jews randomly, they have had plenty of them around for years to do that, and Amsterdam would not have previously been considered a 'Haven' (a term that I have seen explicitly rescinded in response to these events, so it was at least still acknowledged as one recently). The opposing football team also has a massive jewish association to its fanbase, as well.

My fear is that, with all of this english language reporting and the official government statements (across several governments), the story will be completely twisted into simple fearmongering about random, unprovoked attacks. it is very quick and easy to find freely available sources that only echo the government statements and interview only israelis, there are fewer articles that discuss the mutual tension and events leading up to the incident, some of which only have it as a footnote at the end of a long article, and some of which are paywalled.

As always, I recommend reading a variety of sources and not trusting any singular one too much. Israel has made *many* official statements that most other people in high government positions seem to be echoing, but local councilmembers and police had also already recounted more nuanced and contradictory stories
