You’re right, Blades might be a little overwhelming. I think Blades specifically would be best for somebody who likes have a very clear and well-outlined setting that they can insert themselves into -- people who really like reading campaign setting books in DnD would do well with Blades. But as you say, for others it might not be the best bridge away from DnD.

I understand and agree with your wariness of customizabilty, but I think Ironsworn is a good model for how to use it well, because its customizing aspects aren’t so much hoisting the onus of design onto you as they are inviting you to make the setting and the lore your own, to fine-tune the game to the specific fantasy you want. You don’t have to figure out how to make the game good, it already is; you just have the power to make it feel the way you want it to. Do you want a heroic adventure making the world a better place, or a grim trudge through a world barely clinging to life that stubbornly resists improvement? Do you want magic and elves and ancient secrets, or something more grounded? It makes each campaign feel unique while being rooted in the same setting without asking you to write the game yourself.

I think DnD’s decent fun as a tactics game, but the people who eschew combat and just play it as a roleplay game are incomprehensible to me. It’s one thing if they’re trapped in a tabletop Plato’s Cave and don’t know other RPGs exist, but the people who know and still try to bend DnD to be something that all of its systems work against baffled me to no end

It feels like the people who extensively mod their Roblox or Minecraft to play like a modern military first person shooter. Like, after hours of work it’ll play okay, but you could just go play a dozen other real shooters very easily and have more fun, half of which are free
