hello! hope ur doing well! i love reading ur answers and getting to know more abt u sm! its just amazing how days go by so quickly and busily like u blink and suddenly its 4 of them passed already! apologies! unlike u, im still infant-level fan to kpop (got pulled by skz) and being as hyperfocused on skz as i was, dont know any other kpop groups like i do skz sadly, but i do love music! i love shinee's stuff sm!!! and my best friend really likes xdinary heroes so im getting into them too! and txt just have some of the funnest bsides so their discography gets scoured too lmao. i just dont know any grps members or anything well, but yeah! like u said, lots of good music raining down. i will never understand ppl's bias against non native language songs-esp when they like english stuff and its not their mother tongue!-bcs kpop has such a range. so many interesting sounds, artists and genres!! from past year ive really found myself drawn to soft-ish(?) k-indie/rock a lot! u asked for newer artists (ik so less abt bands. this is a personal failure</3) some of my favorites i think are: lee go do, mingginyu, nerd connection! akmu, heo hoy kyung, se seo neon, etc etc just lots of solo lowkey artists and songs lmao. there's smth abt the lapping continuity of soft sounds and forming of language like that which enthralls me a lot. i really adore loud and wonderful girl group songs as well!! i listen to girl groups a whole lot more than bgs which is surprising bcs i love skz, but their immaculate energy and style! really love aespa, rv, loona! stayc, twice, billie, izone and others! do u listen to lucy the band? their stuff's really fun as well! i rambled sm lmao but yeah. music is so exciting in so many aspects its amazing. i love listening to a lot of languages and genres too! mostly bcs my brain's engagement is a pinball game and i am keeping it amused with fifty different things at the same time. which is why i just have a lot of recs for songs but none for artists bcs i collect and find interesting stuff but get obsessed easily, which makes it difficult to get into every artist particularly. would love to trade playlists or songs once this secret santa is over if ud be comfortable with that! (no pressure genuinely!) thank u for reading and indulging me! its funny how everything is still so busy even tho we here dont celebrate christmas that extensively like the west at all (asian!) holidays are holidays tho i guess lmao. hope u have lots of fun sweets and gifts well wishes and rest and reprieve!! stay safe!!

hi!! sorry again for answering this so late, like you said, the days go by in a flash lmao. thank you so much for those recommendations, i'm excited to check them out!! once i have the time 😅 i think after christmas i’ll be doing a lot of chilling and art + new music will be perfect. i totally feel you on collecting songs over artists usually, i do the same because i find good songs randomly from cafes, movies, spotify recommended, etc. and just put them all into a playlist, lol. i would LOVE to trade playlists with you. anything you recommend will be much appreciated. i really need more indie recs and good gg songs, i only really know mamamoo but i think they’re great. i’ve heard some singles from the other groups you mentioned that i like a lot too but i don’t know any of their b-sides.

oh wow you’re located in asia? that’s very cool, is it hot there right now or are you more in the north? i’m in california so we don’t get very “wintery” vibes even in december, but it has been raining a bit which is really nice and refreshing. also, today is my birthday! so we had a really great banana cake my family made, and they also made an incredible brunch. we’re going ice skating in a little bit and then having a bonfire on the beach in the evening. hope you’re having a good day as well! merry christmas if you celebrate 🎅🎄✨💝

“You’re sure nobody is coming home any time soon?” you mumbled, already gasping for air as you tried to make out her features in the dim light of her dorm room, while desperately trying to keep yourself from forgetting all your problems only to continue kissing her gorgeous lips. 

Chaeyoung smiled against your lips and whispered “I’m sure, we have all the time in the world today, just you and me.” 

She knew her roommate’s routines and schedules better than you so why should you worry when she said it would be ok? Was what you told yourself as you tried to relax and go back to what you were doing, your hands rubbing small circles on her hips and back while you met her kiss in a familiar and sweet manner.

 It had been almost six weeks since you two began sneaking around like this now; six weeks of you two doing everything your could to find a moment to be alone and taking every chance you got to give each other sweet little kisses like these in the dark. 

The moments never lasted long though, the both of you having nosy roommates who just so happened to also be pure homebodies. It’s not like they couldn’t know, of course,  but the both of you just didn’t feel like it was time to announce your thing yet…

Honestly, you didn’t actually know what exactly was going through her mind about this whole thing at the moment. 

Asking “what are we” just hadn’t felt fair. It just felt like you were putting the decision on her, forcing her to decide all by herself when you had agreed you would try it out like this for a while from the very beginning. But the whole ‘keep it under wraps’ thing that had been so much fun for the first couple of weeks was beginning to lose its appeal, and was really just creating more problems than solutions in your life. 

Chaeyoung’s hand was caressing down your side and down your leg where she stayed and let her hand drag up and down your thigh, sending shivers up your body, loving the way her hands moved on your body. 

“You’re sure, really sure?” you asked yet again, making her pull away from your lips, a slight smirk on her face as she looked down at you being all worried over the timelimit you had any time you got to have her all by herself like this. 

“So sure,” she reassured you, “just tell me what you want, and it’s yours.”

Your breath hitched in your throat, mind running off to places you rarely let yourself think of since you never got to stay alone with her for that long. The thoughts and her lips now tracing down your jaw and your neck leaving the feather-light sensation of her little kisses on your skin made you excited and hot all over your body. 

“Just… tell you what I want?”

“Mhm, we have time,” she said, her breath hot against your neck. 

“God, I can’t even think with your mouth on me,” you groaned out making her chuckle lightly on your sensitive skin as she kissed and sucked wherever she saw fit, the feeling of her warm and wet tongue making your mind fuzzy and blood rush to your skin making your face grow hotter by the second. 

“Yeah? You like my mouth? Want me to use it somewhere else?” she whispered into your ear. 

“God yes!” you moaned out, and she began kissing her way down your neck once again, pulling your shirt up and kissing down the middle of your chest and stomach, leaving hot wet nerves on fire wherever her lips met your skin and her hands caressing your body in smooth motions that seemed to know exactly how to make your body melt under her touch. 

Time had never felt like such a blessing to have until this very moment when it was the thing that made anything possible. You were floating on cloud nine, mewling and moaning under her touch, seeing and hearing only her, so focused on the moment with her that everything else fell away around you. 

“Chae- What the actual fuck!” the voice exclaimed, disbelief apparent in the way their pitch was high and very clearly not filled with joy or excitement. 

You had barely even comprehended what had actually been said and more importantly why a blinding light was suddenly shining right into your eyes before you heard a loud voice coming from where the light was streaming in. 

In the midst of the sudden entrance and shouting, Chaeyoung had pulled off of you and your shirt had been messily pulled down to cover your bare chest and parts of your stomach. You looked over at Chaeyoung, seeing pure shock and terror in her eyes as she stared back at you with eyes wider than you had ever seen them. She had no idea what to do, and you stared back at her with the same thoughts running through your mind. 

What the fuck do we do?

In the doorway, another person had popped their head inside only to see the both of you, alone and looking like two complete messes with your lips plump and clothes hastily thrown back on the way they were supposed to be. 

“Were they just-?!” a high-pitched voice that you soon realized came from Chaeyoung’s roommate Sieun said without being able to finish her question, noticing on the way Jayoon was screaming and you two were looking guilty as fuck that it was indeed exactly like she thought. 

“Once again - WHAT THE FUCK?” the voice that had originally found you two screamed out. Jayoon, Chaeyoung’s other roommate, seemed just as shocked, if not more, than Sieun. 

“Seriously? You two? Since when?!” Jayoon began shouting again, but Sieun put her hand over Jayoons mouth before she could begin screaming again and dragged her out of the hallway like a baby kitten being pulled away by its mother, thrashing and screaming muffled sounds of displeasure due to the sudden loss of control and screaming ability.

Sieun shushed Jayoon in the hallway, wheezing out “Give them a moment before you start harassing them for information on whatever they have going on,” which you and Chaeyoung still heard loud and clear through the still wide open door. 

Just as quickly as the door had been thrown open Chaeyoung ran up and shut the door behind her with a slam, her entire body language telling you she was panicking. “What do we do?” she said, looking at you as if you would have any sort of  answer. 

“I-” you tried, but your words and your thoughts failed you in producing the right words to say. 

It was completely silent in the room, the only thing being heard was the hushed whispers and tiny shrieks coming from the roommates on the other side of the door. 

“Do we… do we tell them about us?” Chaeyoung asked, her words unsure and tentative. 

“Us?” you answered, not sure what she meant by that. 

If you didn’t even know what you two were, how could you know what to tell people about the two of you? You questioned as your heart raced in your chest from the whole commotion, not to mention what was interrupted just before it. 

“About our thing,” she tried again. 

You decided this was the moment you had been waiting for, this was the only way to know what she was feeling, what she was thinking. Maybe it wasn’t fair to ask, but it wasn’t fair not to either, not to her and certainly not to you. 

“What exactly is our thing?” you managed to croak out. 

“We’re,” she said but stopped herself, her eyes searching your face for a sign of what you wanted the answer to be, but your confused look must’ve not helped very much, because when she said, “together?” it was with much hesitation and it seemed to be just as much of a question as it was an answer. 

“We’re… together?” 

“I mean only if you want that! We can tell them we’re just… messing around too if you, you know, don’t feel that way about me,” she blurted out, her hands fiddling with the hem of her shirt as she chewed on her cheek while awaiting some kind of reaction from you. 

She was the one that was unsure about how you felt? She wanted you to tell her how you saw your relationship? She was ready to tell them you two were together if you felt the same way she did?? It wasn’t until just at this moment you saw the whole thing from her perspective, she must’ve been just as confused as you had been you realized. Maybe the uncertainty of your relationship and the whole secret part of it had been just as horrible for both of you this entire time. 

The realization had made your brain freeze up, and your answer had been delayed for quite a while now, and as you looked at Chaeyoung who seemed to be on the verge of tears you felt yourself being snapped back into reality. 

“No! I’d love to call you my girlfriend!” you exclaimed, your entire face cracking up into a smile, the newfound understanding of what you two were to one another sending a rush of excitement through your body. The adrenaline from the past couple of turbulent moments made your body feel like it was filled with popping and fizzling champagne that whizzed through your every vein. 

“Really?!” she exclaimed, suddenly seeming to understand the realization herself. “So we… we tell them were a couple? I’m your girlfriend?!” 

“Yes?” you shouted, both of you seemingly questioning the entire situation, but it wasn’t because you felt unsure, or because you didn’t know what you wanted anymore. The pure shock and whiplash you had both received from being confronted with the feelings you had both been avoiding for such a long time were now the cause of your confused state.

“So you’re together? A couple? And you have been something for almost two months? And you have been keeping it a secret this entire time? For no reason?” Jayoon rambled, trying to comprehend the things you two were telling her. 

“Yup,” you said, nodding as if you were seeing absolutely no issue in what had just been stated. 

“But WHY?” Sieun said, losing her own mind trying to put together the reasoning behind what had been going on behind their back for the past couple of weeks. 

“Don’t. Ask.” you both said in unison. Neither of you was in the mood to try and explain the tumultuous feelings and reasoning that had been going on in either of your minds. 

“Y’all are so weird, but congrats I guess,” Jayoon said and gave you both a thumbs up as she rose from the couch and left the room to do something other than being confused as fuck over what you two were doing and thinking this entire time.

Sieun shook her head, “Yeah, congrats you’re cute together, but please, try not to do whatever you were doing before while were home ever again,” she pleaded and at your nods and apologies she waved you both off and let you lock yourselves into Chaeyoung’s room for the evening. 

As you laid in her bed, cuddling and about to fall asleep you realized that this was the first sleepover you had ever had that wasn’t one of you sneaking in under the cover of the dark of the night and then out before breakfast. It was nice, the stress of being caught not hanging over your heads, and a new and exciting feeling having replaced it. You were officially something and now you could stay right there in her arms as long as you wanted without a worry in the world. 

You flipped yourself over from the little spoon position you had been in, now laying face to face with Chaeyoung, your foreheads resting against one another’s as you looked into each other’s eyes. The small fairy lights strung up in her ceiling shone a dim light over her gorgeous features and you felt your heart skip a beat thinking that she was yours for the world to know from this moment forth. 

“I like the idea of calling you my girlfriend from now on,” you whispered, making Chaeyoung grin widely and giggle a bit. 

“I like hearing you call me your girlfriend,” she whispered back and pressed a peck to the smile in the corner of your mouth. 

You pulled her body closer to yours, your hands running over her back as you gave her a light and sweet kiss back before you cuddled into a comfortable position where you both drifted off to sleep.

it makes so much sense that kpop's retro era and y2k era was when it was.

ig it also makes sense in terms of the trends during that time, which i feel kind of reflected the world around us.

ig with these retro sounds we were also being retrospective on life in general,

and the youthful, "new millenium" era of kpop kind of signifies freshness, but also nostalgia. the kind that feels new but also carries a bit of the past with it.

this chain of events happened from 2020 to 2023, which makes so much sense at the turn of a new decade and a strange circumstance.

enha's revolution of mvs and music i feel solidifies this idea. along with this i see stayc, and other grps that debuted in 2020/early 2021.

the two genres can definitely blend, retro and y2k/mcbling being interlinked. kpop definitely went through a rapid paced, 4 decade genre change, retro categorised as anything before the late 90's.

the crux of this had been the kdramas- the popularity of 2521 and 20th century girl pushing this change.
