Bite on My Face----When we were young we often visited my step monster's family. Many of them were farmers near Hamiota, Manitoba. When we visited my stepmonster's younger sister and her husband we had to stay in the car until the farm dog, a huge German Shepard, alerted that there were guests. He was a little on the vicious side. But was OK when my aunt or uncle were present or he was inside the house. The rules were that we were not allowed outside alone unless the dog was inside. Easy enough right? Well I wanted to go outside exploring and asked if I could and since the dog was inside I was told I could go out. It is weird, I don’t remember who the adult was that told me I could go out, but I know that the dog was in the house. So I went out and explored for a while then went back to sit on the front steps. I often preferred to be outside because the chain smokers were inside. Somehow someone forgot that I was outside and they let the dog out. Shit, now the dog and I are on the front porch alone. He sat on my right side and growled. I didn't know what I was supposed to do. So I just sat very still and talked to the dog quietly hoping the growls would stop or he would leave me alone long enough to get back in the house. No such luck. He turned his head and snapped at my face. One of his large front teeth caught me on my cheek at my mouth and punctured my cheek all the way through. I hit the dog to get him to stop and I took off for our car that was in the driveway. Luckily the doors were open. I sat in the car for hours with my face bleeding until my parents were ready to leave. When they found me I got shit for being outside with the dog. I tried to explain that I had followed the rules that someone let the dog out after I had asked permission to go out. This didn't seem to phase them even when I showed the bite on my face. They told me that the bite was my problem since I disobeyed the rules. It was bad enough that I should have had a stitch but that wasn't going to happen. I was left with a scar close to my mouth that I still have today.
Garry P---We were not allowed in the house without an adult until I was 13 years old. This meant sitters. One of these sitters was Mrs. P. her son Garry was about Desy age and he was a nice kid. She also had a younger daughter Jennifer that was Kevin’s age. Mrs. P took care of us after school until one of our parents got home. I don't remember if their father was in the picture. We kept in contact with this family for years after we no longer needed a sitter. When I was 20 1 found out that Garry was killed by a drunk driver. He was a member of a wedding party and on the way to the reception the entire wedding party was in one car. All six of them were dead at the scene of the accident. Its amazing just how cruel life can be.
Carpet Bag Sitter-----The summer I was 12 when I was still too young to babysit my brothers alone we had to have a sitter or attend the community club summer program. Most of our sitters were useless and summer would be long and boring. I managed to keep occupied and did OK but my brothers Desmond and Kevin didn't do so well. Desy loved to torment Kevin and sometimes me too. It wasn't too bad for me yet since I was now bigger than him. Kevin had a really rough time. Except for this one summer when we had this great sitter. This sitter was amazing. She even managed to control and entertain Desy, not an easy feat. She arrived at 8 A.M. after our breakfast and she kept us occupied till my father got home. She made us get our chores done on time and helped us so we could take off somewhere. She carried a great big carpet bag full of things games, toys, books, crayons, etc. On a nice day we would get to go out to the pool or another event like the museum or the zoo. On bad weather days we played games. It was sad to see her go at the end of the summer. The following summer I was old enough to be left on my own with the boys. So the boys were my responsibility. Desmond hated this and summers were hell till he was 15 and left home.
Grandad's Last Present----We used to get care packages from our gran and grandad. Till we were about 13. The gifts usually was made up of a pile of chocolates and cash. Then we would have to write and thank them. My stepmonster keeps reminding me that it was her who made us right back as if it was our fault as children not to be letter writers. I would think that this was part of the job of being a parent? One year when I was about 12,  I got a gift for my birthday from my grandfather. I was always his favourite. I know it isn’t right to have favourites but remember he was a little touched. The gift was a book with all of Michelangelo's work and a set of oil paints. The book was huge and the pictures were amazing. My parents said I could keep the paints but the book was too valuable for me to have. They thought I would ruin it. Or were they more concerned with the nudity in the work. Either way I said no way. My grandfather had given it to me and he trusted me with it so who were they to say any different. My grandfather died within a few months of my receiving this last birthday gift. I guess he knew his time was up. I still have the book and it is in very good condition. The art work is awesome and I and othershave enjoyed it for years.
