McElroy brothers this is an intervention. Last time I made a post about this I didnât maintag it but this time I shall.
Saying âthe thing about working with your brothers for this many years is that you can grow to hate them on a molecular levelâ about your fellow co-host is comedy poison. Especially on the episode where youâre fundraising for the year. It's not fun to listen to if you're not having fun making it, and given the number of jokes in recent episodes about ending the podcast or just hating having to make it, it really doesn't seem like y'all are having fun anymore.
If your relationships with each other as friends and not just family and co-workers are struggling to the point that you canât remember to âyes, andâ each other when trying to make a comedy podcast, you need to take a hiatus and re-learn how to appreciate each other away from the internet. If you're that burned out that you don't enjoy making the show, you probably need to take a break.
The podcast is actively unpleasant to listen to when half of every episode is Griffin and sometimes Justin berating Travis for everything he does, I assume because theyâre bitter and blame Travis for their decline in popularity and whatever has been going on with the equally bad vibes in taz for several campaigns.
My dudes you were always going to decline in popularity at some point, that happens to literally everyone who makes a content career on the internet. You fostered a highly parasocial bond with your fandom, and highly parasocial fan communities tend towards toxicity and fans feeling easily betrayed when they realize the people they idolize are flawed humans. So it goes. Maybe try and set healthier boundaries and expectations with listeners in future. But every celebrity, minor or major, is going to peak and lose some of their fame at some point.
You can work through those bad feelings with a therapist and maybe work with a group therapist on strengthening and healing your familial bonds, but all that conflict resolution needs to happen offline cause you canât keep being dicks to your family members and calling it comedy.
I promise you if you stop making MBMBaM and TAZ for a year or two and then come back to it and make a big deal about your return a significant portion of your remaining audience will be excited to have you back, maybe even more than are currently listening to your stuff cause the vibes are off.
Post reruns a couple times a month on the feed, keep posting compilation clips on YouTube and tiktok and stuff like that in the meantime, and make some solo content and maybe occasional McElroy family clubhouse episodes for a while. But yâall have got to take a break at some point because your flagship podcast is basically unlistenable rn. I keep starting it every week for the new episode and turning it off partway through because yâall are just being mean to each other.
#MBMBaM#MBMBaM critical#caitie speaks#mcelroys#mcelroy critical#adding another critical tag for better filtering purposes#i'm not trying to make anyone feel bad like I'm attacking them for still enjoying the show#or taz but i stopped listening to taz years ago when they started taking it too seriously instead of focusing on having fun#so I know very little about the current state of it

honestly this site is such a great way to learn perspective bc sometimes i go down spite rabbitholes or whatever and then i feel bad about wasting my time riling myself up instead of just moving on but then i get to remember that I havenât spent the last almost 4 years and counting maintaining a blog exclusively dedicated to how much i hate a popular ship and maintagging every single post so i can get in as many fights as possible

Hey, this is not meant to be passive aggressive like that last anon, and you can ignore it if you want, I just wanted to say that on tumblr, there is generally an unofficial rule that hate/negativity doesnât go in the maintags. Itâs why thereâs that joke about people censoring ships/fandoms they donât like when we mock censoring pretty much anything else.
You can do whatever you want and people can just deal or block, but I wanted to say something in case you didnât know. I hate when I stumble into an unspoken rule and everyoneâs mad without explaining, so I donât like leaving other people to experience the same thing.
hey thank you for your kind impulse, I appreciate it. I am aware of it. i just think its a bit silly in a lot of cases. ships is one thing, thats within the scope of the fandom so fandom rules apply. but just a real persons name or even a franchise etcâŠsometimes people wanna discuss that outside the context of âfandomâ and that should be an accepted risk of using the most literal tag for such.

I was in the tumblr tf fandom for a hot second a few years ago and i just wanted to ask, is it still really aggressive here? because back then there was a lot of shipping drama, there were a few callout posts going around (can't really remember about what) and just...a lot of bad stuff. I personally had someone tell me to kill myself because I liked one of the villains. guess I'm just wondering if, in your opinion, things have chilled out? Cuz I'd like to get back into it but I'm a little hesitant;;;
I'm going to try and give the fullest answer I can in the best faith to this! For context, this blog is a couple years old now, I have enough followers that I get a lot of active engagement on my posts etc, I am very active in TF fandom here, Twitter, and IRL, and while I did not used to be active I have been lurking in TF fandom as long as I have been on Tumblr.
There is absolutely still some toxicity; all fandoms have their bad faith actors, their drama hounds, their shipping Diskhorsers TM. I have gotten hate mail, I know folks who have issue with weird anon haters who are persistent, whatever. But no, it is not as bad as it has been in the past, IMO, not at ALL, and it is 100% possible to have an active, sociable and nice time in this fandom so long as you curate your engagement, with basically no drama at all. Many of the worst folks burned out and left when the fandom got less active and their shitstirring paid lesser and lesser dividends, IME.
People sometimes ask how I maintain such a vocal presence without falling into the still-there drama, and I have some advice that I promise you will mitigate like, 99% of the possible issues you could encounter:
Block whenever you feel like blocking. If you get a bad vibe, if you just don't personally like someone and don't wanna see them, if you see them throwing what looks like a temper tantrum you don't want in on, just block 'em. Remember: blocking is nothing personal towards the person you are blocking. It is not insulting and doesn't need to be 'earned'. Block every single person you think not blocking might even just theoretically cause stress or drama. (I am blocked by several people for reasons no more serious than 'I hate your OTP', and I commend every one of them for doing it and having a better time on this site!)
Delete any and all anon hate. Block anyone and everyone who sends you hate. No exceptions. No witty comebacks. No takedowns. Nothing. You see it and the actual literal second you do, you block and delete. None of it is worth one second of your time. Deprived of the oxygen, they will leave. And you won't be tempted to re-read it and stress out.
In that same vein, if it causes issues, just turn anon off! Turn it off. Personally I keep it on because I simply do not care about the odd troll, but if you care even slightly? Fuck 'em, turn it off, anon is a privilege your followers need to earn by acting in good faith.
Find people you like and follow them, ignore blatant shitstirring in the maintags (again: block people!) and try to curate content and follows and mutuals based on what you do like and not what you don't. Curate positive engagement; do not rely on the general fandom slurry, find what you like and hang out in your own corner of things that bring you joy. If the maintag stresses you out: don't check it. Check the blogs of folks you know are cool instead. Stuff like that.
Fandom should be fun. Fandom should be finding people you like and sharing good times with them, not stressing about avoiding folks you hate, or who hate you. Tumblr lets you moderate how you engage, when, and where more than almost any current social media site; now you can even turn off reblogs and oh my GOD is that a lifesaver function btw. If you want, you can make your blog unsearchable! It means you will need to be more proactive in making friends. But TF fandom is pretty tight knit these days, and folks want to talk a lot of the time. You'll still be able to engage with cool people.
There's way less aggro losers around these days, but more to the point, you can absolutely avoid the ones that still insist on being annoying and starve them out without much effort, tbh.

God this fandom really lacks critical thinking skills sometimes like why are there people acting like Liam confirming something out of game that we already knew with about 99% surety will change anything in game or in terms of what final outcomes will be or somehow disrespects jester and suggests she's only there to be a love interest or whatever tf as if love isn't something that is super important in people's lives and can affect them a lot and therefore will and should be talked about
I understand the issue of turning Jester into simply a love interest, because I DO see that happen, and I do think we have to be a little more careful sometimes because Jester herself hasnât really had a say yet in ANY of this, outside of that one Talks where Laura essentially said that Jester is growing up and growing out of her old romantic fantasies.Â
But, of course, some people do take it a bit too far and use all of that as an excuse to shit on people personally in the fandom or to maintag hate of things. And obviously there are people who rep their ship a little too hard and start claiming things that obviously havenât happened yet. It goes for all the ships, by the way, in all the fandoms, because thatâs just a fandom curse we all have to live with until we all die I guess.Â
Anyway tldr; you right but naunce, also fandom sucks sometimes but at least death approaches?Â
