Ecological costs of traditional seawalls

Seawalls have long served as a primary defense against coastal erosion and storm surges. Typically constructed of concrete and ranging from 6 to 10 feet in height, they are built along shorelines to block waves from eroding the land and flooding nearby urban areas.

However, they often come at an ecological cost. Seawalls disrupt natural shoreline dynamics and can wipe out the complex habitat zones that marine life relies on.

Marine organisms are crucial in maintaining coastal water quality by filtering excess nutrients, pollutants and suspended particles. A single adult oyster can filter 20-50 gallons of water daily, removing nitrogen, phosphorus and solids that would otherwise fuel harmful algal blooms. These blooms deplete oxygen levels and damage marine ecosystems.

Filter-feeding organisms also reduce turbidity, which is the cloudiness of water caused by suspended sediment and particles. Less water turbidity means more light can penetrate, which benefits seagrasses that require sunlight for photosynthesis. These seagrasses convert carbon dioxide into oxygen and energy-rich sugars while providing essential food and habitat for diverse marine species.

Swirling shapes, shaded grooves

Unlike the flat, lifeless surfaces of typical concrete seawalls, each BIOCAP tile is designed with shaded grooves, crevices and small, water-holding pockets. These textured features mimic natural shoreline conditions and create tiny homes for barnacles, oysters, sponges and other marine organisms that filter and improve water quality.

The tile’s swirling surface patterns increase the overall surface area, offering more space for colonization. The shaded recesses are intended to help regulate temperature by providing cooler, more stable microenvironments. This thermal buffering can support marine life in the face of rising water temperatures and more frequent heat events driven by climate change.

Another potential benefit of the tiles is reducing the impact of waves.

When waves hit a natural shoreline, their energy is gradually absorbed by irregular surfaces, tide pools and vegetation. In contrast, when waves strike vertical concrete seawalls, the energy is reflected back into the water rather than absorbed. This wave reflection – the bouncing back of wave energy – can amplify wave action, increase erosion at the base of the wall and create more hazardous conditions during storms.

The textured surfaces of the BIOCAP tiles are designed to help diffuse wave energy by mimicking the natural dissipation found on undisturbed shorelines.

The design of BIOCAP takes cues from nature. The tile shapes are based on how water interacts with different surfaces at high tide and low tide. Concave tiles, which curve inward, and convex tiles, which curve outward, are installed at different levels along the seawall. The goal is to deflect waves away from the seawall, reduce direct impact and help minimize erosion and turbulence around the wall’s foundation.A

How we will measure success

After the BIOCAP tiles are installed, we plan to assess how the seawall redesign enhances biodiversity, improves water quality and reduces wave energy. This two-year pilot phase will help assess the long-term value of ecologically designed infrastructure.

To evaluate biodiversity, we will use underwater cameras to capture time-lapse imagery of the marine life that colonizes the tile surfaces. These observations will aid in documenting species diversity and habitat use over time...

Was it when Mel got Jayce into the Council? Was it the bomb? Was it the Hexcore killing Sky? Mutating Viktor? It definitely turned to dog shit when your groups invention caught the eye and interest of Ambess Medarda.

You're smart. But you're better at working with your hands. You were constantly in the forge with Jayce, creating prototype after prototype. You even helped him with Viktor’s cane and brace.

You're quite efficient at creating something from nothing. If you have a detailed blueprint, you can make it.

And Ambessa Medarda knows this.

“You’re just as guilty as I, child. Your hands are covered in blood just as much as mine are. I may have been wielding the weapons. But you made them.”

She walks out of the lab, and you collapse onto the ground. Sobs wracking your body as you hyperventilate. She's right. Oh god she's right! How many people have been injured, maimed, killed by your inventions? Your genius? You gag a few times, almost throwing up at the nauseous feeling deep in your stomach.

You never wanted this. You wanted to help people. You wanted to save others. Instead, you're killing them.

God Viktor, Sky, and Jayce would be so disappointed. But what can you do? You have guards stationed at every door, people in the shadows constantly ministering your every move, and no freedom.

You're trapped.

Until… you aren't.

Viktor knows something is wrong. Jayce is missing, Sky is dead, and he has no news on you. You, his beloved friend and cherished partner. His followers have nothing to give. No sightings, no understanding of where you could be. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

It isn't until a follower of his enters his personal chambers does Viktor know where you are.

They're holding a beautifully crafted sword. The blade is sharp, polished, and deadly. The pommel is a beautiful design, and the hilt has a secure strip of leather to help grip.

The hexgem captures Viktor's attention immediately. As does the faintest swirl design on the pommel. It's your initials. They're faint, barely legible, but they're there.

You always sign your work. “Just in case someone decides to steal it!” you'd always say. But your signature would be bold, fancy, and sometimes over the top. Always incorporated delicately and tastefully in your work. But this… this is subdued. Hidden. Almost shameful. You don't want your name attached to these weapons, but they are yours.

And Viktor knows only a few people in this world knows of your signature style.

One of them is dead and the other is missing.

Viktor knows where to get you. Where to save you. And he's gonna make sure he does just that.

He thanks the follower who brought the sword to his attention, and leaves his chambers. He leaves the commune.

He hopes you are okay. He prays for it actually.

He doesn't know what he’ll do if you aren't.

It starts out like any other day. Working in the lab, ignoring the painful nostalgia that hits you, working in the forge, hating your life, eat, sleep, repeat.

But something felt different. You felt it in your gut.

When you hear shouting and banging outside the labs doors you inhale sharply and pick up a letter opener. At least you have something to defend yourself with, even if it’s a bit pathetic.

The letter opener clangs back onto the desk when you see a very familiar figure open the lab doors.

It’s Viktor.

You tear up a bit at the sight, a few tears streaking down your face against your will as you gaze at the man you thought you'd never see again.

His face is as handsome as ever. His skin is mottled in various shades of purple, some golden bits of metal scatter throughout his body. His hair is longer with some blond pieces framing his face in a gorgeous way.

He's wearing what seems to be the blanket Jayce gave him all those months ago. But its styled in a way you never thought you'd see Viktor in. His waist and ribs exposed on one side, multiple leather belts hold the piece together. Sky’s pin is on the blanket as well.

God he looks amazing.

He's your saviour. You could kiss him.

And that's what you do.

Without thinking of the consequences this action may cause, you bolt towards Viktor and leap into his arms, crushing your lips against his. Your arms wrap around his neck and your hands grasp desperately into his long luscious hair.

Viktor gasps a bit and you take the initiative into caressing your tongue into his mouth. That causes Viktor to wrap his arms around your waist and kiss you back firmer. Hungrier.

God you could do this for hours, unfortunately, you need to breath.

You pull back slowly and touch your forehead to Viktor's. A nonverbal way of communication.

I love you. I missed you. I’ll always be with you.

Viktor huffs out a laugh, “I wasn't expecting that.”

“You should've. I dropped hints the size of boulders that I liked you before…”

“Before everything went to shit.”

“Yeah…”

Viktor nidges his nose against yours and lightly tilts your face to press a kiss to your cheek. A smile graces your face in what feels like years.

Viktor's grip tightens on your waist and you gasp in shock. You've always appreciated his hands. How strong yet delicate they were. Agile in ways you couldn't comprehend. Now they're squeezing bruises into your skin, your surprised you haven't collapsed yet.

“May I… make up for the lost time I unintentionally lost? Many nights I could've had you instead of my hand. What a shame.”

You inhale sharply when a kiss and sharp nip is placed on your neck. Your dreaming. You have to be dreaming. Viktor hasn't saved you. You're stuck as Ambessa’s weaponsmith, you're sleeping in the lab, you haven't eaten yet today. This is a delusion.

But the stinging in your neck proves it to be reality.

You bit your lower lip nervously and nod your head yes rapidly, “Take me. Please. Take me away from here and make me yours.”

Viktor chuckles a bit. Its dark and smooth, “Darling, you're already mine. But let’s go back to my commune hmm? Seeing you debauched is for my eyes only.”

And with that, Viktor leads you out of the lab you all once shared. Away from Piltover. From Ambessa and her demands. To a place of safety with the man you've always had a small crush on.

You can tell. His demeanour, his attitude. The way he looks at you. The way he's walking without a cane. His back straight and proud.

You know you won't be walking for a while after Viktor has had his way with you.

comparing asa from early part 2 and now, she feels more like a protagonist created for a oneshot than a longrun series. the quality time to her expositions and critical demeanor to her surroundings has dissapeared completely when the plot moved outside of high school. her character was sustained by this enviorment, to criticize social problems around teenagers, bullying, abusive power dynamics between teachers and students, for yuko and asa finding each other and running away from this source of anxiety: they lived for a story about friendship. the same way, first arc it's very conclusive on it's own, even if denji, yoshida and yoru were around to ground the plot to part 1, yuko and asa took opposite ways to proclaim the power they lost due their aggressors, at the end making a childish promise that calls back to the moment they became friends, it's very oneshot'ish imo, and it was perfect! even until falling devil arc, aquarium arc keep that teen funny-clumsy-first-love vibe. Asa reads very foreign to the actual tone, a tone more inclined to denji's hedonism and frenetic rhythm. hell, she even had to get involved in disgusting jokes and molesting situations to fit in, she barely has anything to say about the current events. it's very sad to see asa only lived through her protagonist glory the first couple of arcs, to end flanderized to just perform as denji's gf and yell around tsundere prototype eye twitch, kind of reminds me of the asuka langley soryu treatment in rebuilds. Soryu was terrified of intimacy and hyper-aware of the sexualization gaze upon her body, but shikinami walked around almost naked half of the movie... you can get the idea??

HG 1/144 Prototype Earth Federation Forces Mobile Suit RX-78-3 "G3 Gundam (Trans Pride Livery)" [Beyond Global] (Bling Knockoff)

Happy Pride everyone!!! This year's pride month build is pretty similar to last year's, adding a trans pride colour scheme and gradient shield onto an otherwise pretty standard kit.

This kit is a Bling knockoff of the Beyond Global version of the RX-78-2, with a custom cyan/magenta colour scheme that I felt would fit perfectly with a trans pride build. Bling's knockoff is pretty much identical to the base RX-78-2 Beyond Global, however unfortunately instead of recoloring the plastic for this scheme, they've simply painted over the sprue, which meant I needed to manually paint over all the nub marks. It's otherwise a very impressive knockoff, with smooth painting, perfect detail, and even a set of knockoff G3 decals with plenty of spares for customisation. The G3 is essentially another RX-78 that made it off Side 7 in pieces, and in the novels replaced Amuro's main Gundam later in the series.

The Beyond Global kit is nominally a High Grade, but it's designed to have as much articulation as possible, and be as colour separated and detailed as a Real Grade kit. There's a ton of articulation, including pivots at both the wrists and upper arm, a cleverly designed shoulder and torso for shoulder articulation, and even a torso flexion and ab-crunch! It can easily get a to lot of the human-like poses you see in the anime.

Apart from fixing up the visible nub marks with an extra layer of paint, and a basic silver and gunmetal weathering for all the grey parts, I added a trans flag and a trans rondel to emphasize the trans-flag adjacent colour scheme. I'm really proud of how the flag turned out, as I feel it's representative of my improved masking skills. The rondel is a little messy, unfortunately, but I still think it adds to the kit. I also ended up painting the eyes and head sensors with my gold marker, which helps them stand out, especially since there weren't any foil stickers included.

Apart from this, the kit was so well colour separated that there was no need for any further touch ups, apart from applying decals. I'm not sure what decal sheet was included, but it's one of the highest quality decal sets I've ever used. The decals are fairly durable and extremely thin, with minimal borders, and they lay super flat against the model. After topcoating, they look as though they've been tampo printed onto the kit, unlike Bandai's, which often notably stick up a little from the surface. I was even able to mask and paint on top of one on the thigh with no issues.

There's a nice little instruction sheet induced for decal placement, but I also improvised a little and included a few of my own spare decals to help bring everything together, especially on the shield and the beam rifle.

As above, the kit is super poseable, and can easily hit and maintain a lot of anime accurate poses, especially given the lack of polycap usage (although a lot of the plastic parts still resemble the polycaps they were derived from). I had a lot of fun trying out poses I couldn't quite hit with my older Origin version of the RX-78-2.

This kit comes with a few hand options for posing, including an open left hand, two open fists for the beam sabers and shield, and a right hand pistol grip. There's also the standard gundam Beam Rifle, with a little peg for attaching to the rear skirt, and both a curved and straight beam saber effect for different poses.

Overall, this is one of my favorite builds so far. I really enjoyed the decal process, and I love how the unique colour scheme helps it stand out on my shelf.

Have you ever been in love?

If he was being honest, life was fuzzy, even more so temperamental that he was from human to dusk and dawn. But he wouldn’t have traded it for anything if it meant he would see you in his non-life or life over and over again.

That is one thing so entirely unique to the quality of dogs, they are loyal and strong with you to the end.

In the sense of irony, he never would’ve expected to be DogDay. But he had long since lived with the idea that he lived this way, to be a leader and a friend to all those he held dear. He never would’ve become anything else, not if he had anything to do with it.

DogDay doesn’t mind sacrificing his own life and body to protect others, to mean if they live. Sure, he may not live to see that aspect he was wholeheartedly himself, that was how he knew he wasn’t completely off the dark end as DogDay.

It was his name and his alone, to be frank; madness, torment and the ripping away of the happiness once had was abnormally flippant to the reality he once knew and loved. DogDay had lived with it, it became the norm for him to live so strongly, trying to be a light those can vy for and not lose themselves in the process.

Love was one remaining factor to his stillborn life, DogDay wasn’t anchoring toward anything. Always having to down his head in order for those alive and their with him meant he could live with that, strong willed humans and toys alike holding their heads up high, that meant he had to stand still and straight so they could see how far they had come.

Hush little baby don’t you cry.

That tune was familiar, was he here? Beyond the specific residence of his permeance, no, he was alive and here. Everyone was okay, camp to be sure, but you too were there. DogDay was content, he didn’t even need words, actions were more than enough.

Everything’s gonna be alright.

You were singing such a wonderful tune, yet a wrenching pit in the gut of his fabricated stomach caused him to think otherwise from the place of his peace. A human male was getting a little too close to you for his liking, trying to stray away from employee regulations no doubt. DogDay wasn’t gonna let that slide, he wasn’t going to allow him to tarnish your personal boundaries and sure as hell was gonna make sure that he knew that.

Stiffen that upper lip, little lady..

DogDay stood up from where he had sat, back being rubbed against the rubble stone wall, for a moment it almost hurt. Yet the pain faded away just as quickly as it came, he began walking, calming himself as your melodic tunes remained ever as wavering to his ears.

All was okay and well between the people in the encampment, strained suffice to say with the amount of space people were left with – but they all had each other to lean and rely on. Not akin to the likes of the Prototype and the rest of his brainwashed lackeys. 

‘Oh CatNap, I wish you could’ve come with us. Why turn to his side?’

DogDay perked up at the whisper shouting his down-trodded ears were picking up, seeing the easel of jealousy churning in his gut. You were trying to turn away the exact guy still with you from which he saw earlier, he turned around from where his body had been hidden from view.

You and the man were greeted by the sight of a very large DogDay.

You set down your guitar, smiling at seeing him. “Hi DogDay! What’s up?” He waved for a moment, then turned to sit down with you and the man. Who seemed to be clearly quivering in half-sighted fear, sensing the intentions of DogDay.

“Nothing to be worried about Angel,” He began, voice still roughed up from previous events. “But is this gentleman bothering you?” DogDay asked, motioning to the man who began inching away from the both of you, seeing as he made (a very clear) mistake.

You waved DogDay off, “Oh this guy? He ain’t bothering me.” Head turning before you had spoke with a hint of finality.

“You were leaving, right?” The man nodded, the look of fear very evident on his poor face. Then he finally walked off with a stride that clearly spoke, ‘Don’t kill me please.’ 

In hindsight, DogDay was going to shield you from him. It seemed that was all it took to get you away from his very slimy presence, he sighed internally, as he wasn’t one to want to cause altercations.

He was a more methodical man – toy? Person? – then that anyway, DogDay then looked up, gaining eye contact with you. With a small wave of his paw in return, “Weren’t you singing? I’d love to hear more of it, Angel.” You smile at him with a scoff escaping you, picking up the guitar to re-adjust your position that you had set your fingers upon the lines originally.

DogDay was glad to be up close to hear your beautiful singing.

Compared to that icky emotion he felt earlier, that was rather confusing as he thought about it.

This was much better.
